"Haider Ali has that will and skill which turn a youngster into a good player" : Younis Khan

Promising Haider Ali set to realise his dream

Manchester, 27 August 2020:

There were no surprises when Misbah-ul-Haq, the head coach and chief selector of the Pakistan men’s national cricket team, shortlisted Haider Ali for the three T20Is against England, which begin later this week at Old Trafford, Manchester. The 19-year-old batsman made headlines over the course of the 2019-20 season on the back of his dazzling stroke play and impressive knocks across formats, including the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020

“This is a dream come true for me,” said Haider about joining the senior team. “Every young cricketer wishes to be here. This is my first tour and though I have shared dressing room with established cricketers in the HBL PSL 2020, being in the Pakistan dressing room is altogether a difference experience.”

Younis Khan, Pakistan’s most prolific Test batsman who is in England with the team as the batting coach, praised Haider’s work ethic. He said: “Haider has that will and skill which turn a youngster into a good player. He has that spark and he is always eager to learn.

“I believe he is an upcoming star of Pakistan and he will perform whenever he gets a chance. He is strong and his fitness is improving day-by-day. He has a bright future and the ability to play all formats for Pakistan.”

Haider comes into the side after a prolific 2019-20 season in which he made 645 first-class runs at 49.62 and amassed 239 runs at a staggering strike rate of 158.27 in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 to finish as the joint second-highest run-getter for his team (Peshawar Zalmi) along with veteran Shoaib Malik. His 14 sixes were the most by any Zalmi batsman in the fifth edition of the league, which was played in Pakistan.

Haider seems to have a natural ability to drive the ball. According to CricViz, it was his most-productive shot in the HBL PSL 2020 as it brought him 54 runs against pacers and 17 against spinners, without being dismissed once while playing it.

“I did not get to bat much in matches during my club cricket days. I used to spend a lot of time in nets and focused on cover drives as it is my favourite shot,” he said. “That practice helped me improve this shot.”

Younis is also fond of Haider’s cover drive and while speaking about it, he said: “He plays well-calculated cover drives, quite like Babar Azam’s which are world renowned. I like his initial movement and the way he approaches the ball. He plays solid cover drives. I have worked with him on making his base strong and have been working with him on cut and pull shots, which are high scoring shots in international cricket.”

Haider featured in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup under another promising youngster Rohail Nazir earlier this year in which he earned praises from the game’s greats for his scintillating strokes. He scored a fighting half-century in a semi-final against India. In 19 U19s 50-over matches, Haider has scored 655 runs, which included a century and six half-centuries at an average just below 39.

He graduated to Pakistan U19 in May 2019 and made his debut memorable with a 65-ball 51 against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Over the course of the past one year, Haider has established himself as one of the future stars.

On his first-class debut in September 2019, Haider, opening the batting, scored a defiant 99 for Northern against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Abbottabad. The significance of his score is underscored by the fact that the next best score (33) in his team’s innings was registered by captain Imad Wasim.

The right-handed top-order batsman scored his maiden first-class hundred against Balochistan in Rawalpindi in the fourth round and capped his first Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with a fighting second innings 203-ball 134 against a star-studded Central Punjab at Karachi’s National Stadium.

“I had no prior experience of four-day cricket but I got a lot of motivation from the coaches and senior players in the side,” he said. “I was disappointed at not scoring a century, but it is there that I decided that whenever an opportunity presents itself next time, I am going to make the most of it. I scored a century three, four innings later and then in the final, which covered it to some extent. But, not being able to score a century in my debut match was a disappointment.

“The experience of playing in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy helped me learn the importance of temperament in cricket as you can only score runs in the longer version of cricket if you show temperament in your batting.”

Haider is now eager to prove himself at the apex level, whenever the opportunity presents itself.

“This is my first tour of England. The conditions here are different than Pakistan and even a different kind of ball is used here. Arriving here two months early has been beneficial, as it has provided me the necessary time to practice – in nets and match scenarios – and be acclimatised. I am looking forward to make the most of what I have learned from my previous experiences.”

Some big hopes on young shoulders - but needs to be given chances.

Fantastic. It’s great knowing that he has spent a lot of time with Younis Khan honing the cut and pull shots, really excited for him.

This Kid has lots lots of potential..even in under 19 days opposing sides coaches said this guy is special..we saw some glimpses in PSL but lots of occasions he lost his head just hope he needs to calm down and knuckle down and i know we have a future opener here. Its been a long time we can say that about a batsman

He mentions the cover drive as his favourite shot. Any quick with a decent outswinger would love reading that as well. If he beats into himself *when* to play his shots, there's a top talent there inshAllah. Also, Younis should work on his body position regarding the pull.

Younis Khan easily has the best cricketing mind in the country and this was very much evident from when he was captain and how reliant Misbah was on him for on-field advice with tactics and field placings.

If Younis rates a player you listen.

If Misbah rates a player, be mindful that it isn't another Asad Shafiq.

Haider has good qualities. I was quite impressed with what I saw in the U19 World Cup and PSL because he has some traits that you normally wouldn’t associate with young Pakistani batsmen.

However, Pakistan has no batting culture and we don’t understand batting either.

Like Babar, Haider will have to find his own way and cannot rely on coaching staff. I am glad that his favorite batsman is Rohit because he needs to look up to and learn from Indian batsmen and how they approach the game, that their mindset is, how they construct their innings etc.

Dont know why but i always think of tea when the see the word fantastic.

Great praise indeed for Haider. It is such a shame that we didnt play him in England tests. I feel we would have us won us that 1st test match.

Need to look at the full picture. You put the current Indian team into Pakistan and ask them to not play at home for a decade and then you will see how they tarnish.

We have had the Saeed Anwars, Saleem Maliks, the Yousufs, the Miandads who were all great players.

We need to play at home.

If James Anderson had not played at home for a decade, his end numbers would have been 250 wickets, instead of 600 wickets.

HA has lots of potential but he will need lots of hard work, lots of opportunities, some grey matter, and lots of luck. What he does look, is a real player. This series should have included at least 2 other young batters. It makes no sense to include the 2 budday who have not offered anything decent for the last decade.

Good point you make here because I keep hearing from a biased bunch that he's an ATG. With his average of 32 away from home, he would never have come close to achieving 600 wickets if he had to play all his tests outside England.

Don't want to derail the thread, but would you like to enlighten us
What stopped Harmison Gough,Caddick,Finn,Hoggard and others to achieve those level of performance
Weren't they used to play at home?
Domestic performance do matter,Anderson and Broad had the skill, discipline and longevity to warrant ATG tag, simple
Don't downplay their achievement just because they cashed in on home conditions
Not every bowler is Warne or Marshall
They have been tagged as ATG noone says they are GOAT athletes

Whenever we lose against a good side (which is basically all the time), we always feel that the players who didn’t get picked would have won it for us.

And if they would have been picked and we would have lost, then the players who were actually picked in the first place would have been nominated as potential match-winners that we did not pick.

If Misbah would have picked Imran and Sohail, we would have been told that that Naseem and Shaheen would have won the first Test and even the series for us.

Had we picked Haris instead of Fawad, we would have been told that Fawad would have won the series for us.

Haider is not remotely ready for Test cricket that too in English conditions. England bowlers have far too much experience and guile to let a rookie, raw Pakistani batsman put them to the sword in Test cricket.

If Misbah continues as a head selector/coach/dictator with no accountability, expect to see Haider Ali finally getting a chance in 10 years time.

There is no full picture. It is just what we tell ourselves to make us feel better about ourselves.

Pakistan’s batting struggles didn’t start with the UAE era. We have been struggling in the batting department for decades and it was the prime reason why we had a poor record in Pakistan since the 90’s.

We are not a batting nation and have a weak batting culture. Our bowling has also gone down the drain which explains our standing in the game, but that is a story for another day.

Saeed Anwar, Yousuf, Inzamam, Malik and even Miandad were in the class of Tendulkar and Kohli.

This whole “UAE ruined our batting“ is just an excuse. Pakistan didn’t miss out on a generation of batting greats and the likes of Azhar and Shafiq wouldn’t be any different had we played in Pakistan all these years.

Babar is also a product of the UAE era but that didn’t stop him. When you have genuine quality it shines through whether you bat in Pakistan or UAE.

If India were to play their home matches in UAE, nothing would change. They would still pummel teams and rack up big scores by batting properly.

This is true for ODIs as well. For years, we excused our batting failures because UAE pitches aren’t conductive to stroke making, but then Rohit and Dhawan arrived in 2018 and smashed our bowlers all around the park, making batting look easy and fluent on the same pitches where our batsmen bat with no momentum.

It is sad that India didn’t tour the UAE for a Test series because they would have given our batsmen a masterclass on how to bat on those pitches.

The only thing playing in the UAE has done is to give our fans an excuse to justify our shoddy batting and our poor batting culture.

As said in the Haider Ali’s thread, I think he is probably the best young batting talent since Babar. He has the potential to be a successful all format batsman which has been a rarity in the last decade for Pakistan.

The stroke play technique and the natural flare is something unlike young Pakistani batsmen of last decade. He just needs to be fully backed in every format he debuts in and should remain in the team of the format he gets selected in going forward irrespective of returns in his earlier days. We have found a decent talent and rightly identified him as well, now he just needs to be given a long run. Now its the responsibility of Babar to mentor him on the ground and coaches with team, at NCA outside.

Agree with this. This guy is quite special. Needs to nurtured properly and YK is probably the best to work with in Pakistan

Even the ones you mention part from Miandad are level below indian greats

I really hope Haider Ali gets his chance tomorrow, would love to see him open with Babar and watch them dominate the powerplay. Hope the likes of Shadab are pushed up the order as well, need to promote our promising batting youth like Haider and Shadab.

Babar Azam: "Haider Ali is an outstanding player and good talent; We will try and make use of him as much as we can; He has been in this bubble with the side, he has practiced well and has been outstanding in practice games; We will take decisions[about playing Haider] based on what's best for the team"

I don’t expect this to happen under Misbah.

Most probably the following 11 will be played

Babar
Fakhar
Hafeez
Malik
Ifthikar
Rizwan
Imad
Shadab
Wahab
Amir

What happens to great Indian batsmen when they go to England?
Why cant they give a masterclass on how to play there?
Except kohli

Expect him to get a chance tomorrow.

Realistically who do you see him replacing in the likely batting lineup?

Fakhar or Shadab?

Babar is the captain and best player so quite rightly is first pick. Hafeez and Shoaib are guaranteed to play as "seniors" and Iftikhar will almost definitely play as Misbah rates him very highly for some reason, also he counts these guys as all-rounders.

Haider seems a good player in the making. He will realize senior international cricket in more competitive than the other formats he has played so far. Cover drive is an attractive, but it is also one of the riskiest shots except in good batting conditions. Playing alongside Babar will give him valuable lessons. Hope he learns every match and builds a very good career.

Extremely talented, but like many Pakistani youngsters plays a lot of loose shots. IF he improves his shot selection he will become a big player for Pakistan.

If he wants to become a successful ODI + Test player as well then he needs to improve his batting temperament and look to Babar Azam as his prime example.

Need to be patient with him.

Already we have seen how Shaheen and Naseem have struggled on this tour and we don't want another young cricketer leaving England as damaged goods.

Not sure what the word outstanding means these days but back when I was at school many years ago, outstanding meant you were exceptional in some way and being able to stand out by delivering things that others can’t.

It’s good to praise youngsters when they do well and encourage them - but would be better if such tall claims are left until they prove themselves to be outstanding with their performances. Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi were also labelled outstanding recently , didn’t see anything that made them stand out among all the bowlers on display in the recent tour, if you take aside Naseem’s century.

He has stats of 45 in first class that shows he has the temperament but I do agree to extend he does play loose shots but you expect that in t20s

Haider
Rizwan/sarfraz
Malik
Iftikhar

I am expecting this

Thiers no space for hafeez in the team if we have to play 2 allrounders and 3 pacers but I would nt be surprised if hafeez played instead of Haider or a bowler

There is always a space for Hafeez - it’s easy , you select him first and then you select 10 proper cricket players.

Thiers no space for hafeez in the team if we have to play 2 allrounders and 3 pacers but I would nt be surprised if hafeez played instead of Haider or a bowler

Tell that to Babar and Misbah.

Here’s the playing XI:
1. Haider
2. Babar (c)
3. Hafeez
4. Malik
5. Shadab
6. Sarfaraz
7. Iftikhar
8. Imad
9. Wahab
10. Amir
11. Shaheen

Haider Ali is special talent. We need to take care of him.

The shots he played in the PSL were just out of the world! Hopefully he gets selected tomorrow and entertains us.

The lad has a bright future if he works hard!

He has that flair which I never have seen in Pakistani batsmen. The killer instinct.

I sincerely hope he gets playtime!

Malik, Hafeez and Iftikhar all selected ahead of Haider.

We can thank Misbah for keeping youngsters out. The happiest cricket day for me was when Misbah retired from cricket. The next happiest cricket day would be when Misbah leaves the coaching position. Absolutely horrible player!

Can't wait till this absolute stain and virus Misbah leaves our cricket forever

As expected Maybe haider will get a chance in 15 yrs

100% agreed.
Haider should've played. Misbah as always starts with seniors, when they don't perform, put in a youngster which would put more pressure to him. Set him up for failure. Pathetic and loser mentality.

One of Hafeez/Malik should've only played, if not none. And Sarfaraz should've been in the side ahead of Rizwan who is definitely not a T20 player (not even played by Karachi Kings).

Very disappointed with Misbah once again.

I remember during his captaincy he did exactly the same, lost lost and lost and for one last game bring in the youngster, put more pressure on him and set him up for failure, and then drop from the side for good.

As expected Maybe haider will get a chance in 15 yrs

Then when he fails due to declining reflexes, Misbah who's managed to hang onto his posts after taking Pakistan to #9 in all three formats will say "I told you so".

Haider Ali should of played the Test series against England. His FC record is good.

Babar Azam: "Haider Ali is an outstanding player and good talent; We will try and make use of him as much as we can; He has been in this bubble with the side, he has practiced well and has been outstanding in practice games; We will take decisions[about playing Haider] based on what's best for the team"

Clearly Haider Ali was not exactly outstanding in comparison to Hafeez and Malik - we know that now, as otherwise Babar as captain would have clearly gone for the most outstanding batsman available to him.

Unbelievable that Haider isn't playing. Playing against an England B team in a meaningless T20 series with 2 WT20 tournaments in the upcoming 2 years, and they still feel the need to test out Malik Hafeez and Ifti instead of one of the most promising young batsmen in the country. They couldn't even have dropped one of those 50 year olds. Such pathetic team selection.

It’s one out of two things -
(1) Really poor team selection where selection of friends and seniors comes ahead of merit , or (2) Haider Ali is actually not as good as some people think, and is not even good enough to replace 39 year old never have beens who have never delivered playing in England.

HA not playing because we want to find out what Hafeez and Malik can do. Obviously, 2 decades isnt long enough.

Haider: “Time to make my debut!”

Hafeez/Malik: “Hippity hoppity, Haider’s place in the team is my property.”

Misbah: “Preach.”

He's shown his performances in the PSL that clearly merit a place. We know what the chachas can offer. How would we know Haider isn't good enough if they select the 50 year olds over him.

It’s really infuriating that Haider is not in this playing XI. This is LITERALLY the perfect scenario for him to make his debut: against England (albeit not full strength), in England, Pakistan are looking towards future batting as well as preparing their t20 batting for the 2 t20 world cups... and they start off with Shoaib Kallis AND Hafeez Jayasuriya?! I’m ok with having one of them for some semblance of experience in the batting, but both? Gimme a break.

Very annoying. Even if they wanted to keep the seniors, they could have played Haider as an opener instead of Fakhar.

There is perfect sync between YKs praise and their action - they are protecting Haider from T20s to turn him into a good player (which MoHa/Malik already are) - so he had to be sitting idle in first game

I fear for the future. There's no planning for inducting new blood into the batting line up. Haider was the only one and they're leaving him out. Even if they plan to keep MoHa and Malik till the WC they still need to have young players in and around the squad. It's the same issue in all formats.

We all know Misbah has a preference for older players and was probably behind this but let us not forget that Babar is also an advocate for Hafeez and Malik to be in his XI, let alone the squad.

If I was Younis Khan, I'd giving an earful to Misbah for leaving out Haider Ali in favour of his friends (Hafeez, Malik and Ifti)

Yes defo I belive babar wanted them even more than misbah

Haider Ali makes his T20I debut today in the final match of the series vs England:

Younis Khan must be feeling good about this - hope he can guide Haider in the future also.
