The TV channel had been censured by the Supreme Court two years ago for its Islamophobic content, with one judge calling its programming "rabid".

New Delhi: An incensed TV reporter's invective over "Urdu" writing on a Haldiram's snack packet directed at a store manager has set off a fierce debate on social media, adding to the siege of the national discourse hijacked by objections to halal meat, the hijab and the Azaan.

"You can do whatever ma'am, Haldiram's will not entertain such tantrums," the store manager tells the reporter thrusting a mic and ranting about "Urdu writing" and "betraying Hindus who fast during Navratri".

The episode drew widespread condemnation on social media with some suggesting the writing on the packet is Arabic and is there because it is exported to the Middle East while others supplied examples of everything from Indian Railways signages to currency notes using Urdu text.

The TV channel Sudarshan TV, a far-right broadcaster, has been censured by the Supreme Court in the past for its Islamophobic content but the government has allowed it to air programmes on subjects like a "conspiracy to infiltrate Muslims in government service".

The show was eventually stopped by the court which ruled, "An insidious attempt has been made to insinuate that the community is involved in a conspiracy to infiltrate the civil services. Several statements in the episodes, which have been drawn to the attention of the Court, are not just palpably erroneous but have been made in wanton disregard of the truth."

"The Sudarshan TV show on the infiltration of Muslims in Civil Services is insidious and rabid since it tends to target one particular community," Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud had said during the legal face-off over the channel's hatemongering two years ago.

"I saw one of the episodes and it was hurtful to watch. Many pictorials are offensive and need to be taken off," Justice Indu Malhotra had said.

This is quite hilarious to be honest. Good on the store manager to stand her ground.

The indian judiciary generally manages to cool the fires fanned by far right politicians and media. Once they are compromised then its game over.

Imagine studying journalism just to end up going to stores and picking fights with store managers lol.

Besides, how does the reporter know it’s written in Urdu, it could’ve been Arabic. I’m sure a lot of imported products coming from Arab countries will have the ingredients written in Arabic, so why is it an issue now?

Haldirams, i miss their chole bhaturay...

Anyways, haldiram products are exported all over the world, even to pakistan aswell.

Also, dont know why these hindutva racists have issue with this as urdu text is used there somewhat. They have movies whose name would also appear in urdu at the start.

What's interestingy in the op is that while supreme court banned this channel, the govt on purpose is allowing content against muslim be broadcasted.

Haldiram barely has Hindi written on it , its always seems to be labeled in English. Might be export product. Its a case of a poor third rate news channel cashing on non issue.

So English is fine, Urdu isn't!

Sanghis and their diehard devotees are cancer for our society.

OTOH, what an unbearable woman that 'reporter' is!

Haldirams itself is a cancer to the society. Selling junk with loaded preservatives is their specialty. Most Indians cannot tell the difference between Urdu to Farsi to Arabic when it comes to script. They just see Arabic like script and rightwing supporters will be up in arms.

Lol , India needs to bring some harassment laws, right to admission should be fundamental what the hell was she doing.

Agree with this.

Haldiram sells only unhealthy stuff and needless to say, people love it.

Haldirams products are sold in European countries and the US/Canada/UK, all of which have extremely strict laws and hygiene standards when it comes to food items. They can't be selling harmful stuff loaded with preservatives.

And most Indians, including many right wing supporters, don't seem to have an issue with arabic writing or whatever. They are still buying and consuming Haldirams products like there's no tomorrow.

Don't paint the views of a half-witted reporter from an unknown TV channel from the cow belt as the national opinion.

They are already hanging by the thread....going by recent rulings
