Handling pressure - Why Pakistan lags behind

If Babar had done a McCullum and left 5-6 of last 8 overs to spinners; then India would have chased even 110+ off last 8 ovs without worry. Shadab, Nawaz, Ifthikar would all have been smashed.

Babar played the odds correctly. He backed his 3 seamers to deliver goods to support the weak link. Shaheen bowled a terrible over, Naseem was brilliant and Rauf was good until the last 2 balls.

Not a captaincy error

Who said he should have left the last 8 overs to the spinners?!

Did you read my post at all? My problem was not that he bowled spin, but he bowled too many consecutive overs of spin.

Simple - there is no high performance culture across the entirety of the cricketing structure.

Just look at some of the reasons listed:

- the leader must absorb all the pressure
- there is no support from the board
- a lack of match awareness

They’re all wrong - the search for a golden bullet to save the day.

A high performance culture includes the right governance of the board/structure, a federated or democratised approach to team culture and management where responsibility and ownership is not in the hands of the few but where individuals are empowered etc.

That kind of approach will enable all team members to absorb pressure, demonstrate that fabled match awareness, ability to think and be proactive instead of waiting for xyz to give micro-managed instructions. And above all p a sense of individual ownership.

?? South Africa sure.
But England has won a t20 world cup and 50 over world cup since pakistan last won the t20 world cup.
NZ won the test championship in 2021.

Pakistan is only good for some bilateral pointless triseries , champs trophy etc. Since pakistan last won a world title in 2009 - England, India, west Indies, srilanka ,Australia and NZ have all won a world title each. Apart from sa -pakistan are the biggest chokers/unable to perform under pressure.

I don't know why I'm being quoted for that statement. I never said that.

Add this match to a long line of Pakistan choking under pressure.

4 runs off 4 balls with 4 wickets in hands against Zimbabwe. Couldn't do it.

SAB se pehlay:

Aap ne ghabrana nahi hai!!!

Its just one game. If you go by the last ten wicket defeat, then you can say Indians are totally clueless and cannot handle pressure. Thats the thing with cricket. On a given day, one team can play better and win and sometimes in really close encounter one individual briliance can make the differece like that innings from Fakhar did for us.

Early days in this world cup so chill, relax and enjoy the ride. For reference, just know that in spite of all the crazy following and such, both PAKISTAN AND iNDIA have a pretty poor record in world cups compared with Australia and West Indies and even Sri Lanka which has played more finals than us in world cups if I am not mistaken. So maybe both India and Pakistan are poor at handling pressure? Sri Lanka typically punches above their weight in ICC tournaments.

Yes we are not as bad as England or South Africa or NZ but our records are not as impressive as Australia and West Indies.

Looks like this is aging nicely. :D

Just for comparative purposes:

First game: 28 off 8 balls - Couldn't defend.
Second game: 4 off 4 balls with 4 wickets in hand - Couldn't chase.

Mentally shot team. The lack of talent, skills, game awareness on display is staggering.

Haider Ali is a much better batsman that he showed today. But for some reason he was petrified of Siqander Raza's bowling and was so nervous that he failed to deal with a straight delivery.

I firmly believe that you do not bring out of form players who have been failing non-stop for 2 months into the biggest stage and expect them to deliver magic all of a sudden. Cricket is a game of form, confidence and performance. Pakistan should have been bold enough to take misfiring players out of the firing line and replace them with fresh, unscarred but in form players even if the players are not good enough.

Sticking with Haider, Asif and Khushdil is a hopeless strategy.

There was a time in the 90s and 2000s where two failures from a new guy would mean you're out of the team for good. Now Pakistan has gone to the other extreme where in the name of "giving chances", they are giving talentless players 2-3 year run in the team. Once you dilute the worth of the Pakistani cap by giving random players international debuts, you would get such mediocrity. The worse part is the bench is even more pathetic than the guys in the team.

To be honest yesterday you cannot blame Babar Azam for his on game tacttics. Easy to say in hindsight

Actually Babar had the right idea. Get Haris Rauf, Naseem and Shaheen Shah to bowl out - hoping they get Kohli and Pandya out and get tailenders on when Nawaz bowls the final over. The problem was Shaheen , Rauf and Naseem could not get the wickets -and even conceded loads of runs -thus Nawaz had to bowl at Pandya and Kohli

The strategy was correct but the bowlers could not get the job done. That exposed Nawaz

Thats a poor strategy , Nawaz 11th over did turn the match.. Cant keep operating spin from both ends for long time.. Should hav mixed it up..

Nawaz bowled the 11th over with short leg side boundary.. If Shaheen or Naseem bowled that over , it wouldnt have gone for runs and the runrate would still climb and if Nawaz bowled the 12th over with long leg side boundary , atleast one of Pandya or Kohli would have been gone and again go 1 more over for Nawaz with long leg side boundary , match would have been killed there..

Babar is a poor captain, look he lost to Zimbabwe today (being a world class batsman this should never happen in a WC) if it happens then major overhaul needed..

He hasn't showed anything he's had enough chances and averages less than 20 and sr less than 130.
