News just in-He has been suspended temporarily from IPL based on the video evidence from Sony and TWI. He can appeal against suspension on Monday

haha

this is getting better day by day.

just happy to see other teams in the news for the wrong reasons apart from pakistan

I want to see the video evidence. I read a post today which said Harbhajan denied the slapage

video probably won't be released.

hopefully someone will leak it though on the net.

But there was demand of video footage in monkey gate otherwise nothing was proven

Well GEO news said that he's been banned for 10 IPL matches...

Surely the BCCI will step in? He must be innocent, surely? This must be an offence to the honour of every Indian? Or does that only apply when he's accused of misconduct in a Test match?

IPL matches??? ban him for tests and ODI's too. :po:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY!!:D

That'll be too harsh a punishment, i say let him be:19:

:P:P

He has been suspended and can be banned for 10 matches, or even a life ban if match referee and board decide to take the tough road. Sreeshant's behavior will also be reviewed.

i cant believe how much indian fans really hate bhaju.

thought he was loved as much as tendulker lol

lol u really think that bhajji is loved by indian fans???

the only reasons his a** was saved during aus tour was cuz of sachin!!

not anymore

I blame Sreesanth, poor Bhajji is the victim here.

Sreesanth has a medically certified 'slappable personality' and 'smackable face' which is a combination that even an angel would find hard to ignore. Bhajji was a victim of circumstance, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person at the end of his outstretched arm!

Slapping Sreesanth is a normal reflex caused by his close proximity, you can no more blame Bhaji for slapping Sreesanth as you can blame a patient for kicking a doctor who's tapping his knee to test his reflexes!

Just heard on Dawn News/TV that it is 10 IPL matches ban.

edit: now they are saying only suspended. this might be recorded news and the other blip about ban that came in some break might be more real time news

You guys are too harsh on Bhajji. Sreesanth must have irritated Bhajji and his team members. Both should be punished equally

is this the joke of the year or what?
unbelievable!!!
can not believe how they made such a big issue out of this whole incident

yup..noone even knows what he told bhajji that sparked the slap...
knowing him..pbly tried to crack a smart-ass comment on harbhajan's losing streak..thought it'd go down well..unfortunately bhajan has a poor sens eof humor after such a humiliating loss..

I think he should be banned for at least 6 months to a year.

Sree has said that Bhajji repeatedly slapped him. There are also reports from cricketers and coaches that this is NOT the first time he has physically assaulted a player.

Harbhajan singh banned

Just heard on GEO that Harbhajan Singh is banned for 10 IPL matches.

And this from Cricinfo.
Indian Premier League

Harbhajan suspended temporarily

Cricinfo staff

April 26, 2008

Harbhajan Singh has been temporarily suspended from the Indian Premier League following his spat with Sreesanth at the end of the Mumbai-Punjab game in Mohali on Friday.

His suspension is pending the inquiry into the incident on Monday, which means he would not be able to play Mumbai's home match against Deccan Chargers on Sunday.

"Based on prima facie video evidence as seen and reviewed by the match adjudicator and referee Farokh Engineer from the tapes provided by Sony & TWI a decision has been reached to suspend Harbhajan Singh pending the inquiry into the incident on Monday, April 28th 2008," a release from the Indian board said.

Engineer will conduct a hearing on April 28 inquiring into the Harbhajan-Sreesanth row in Delhi. Both Harbhajan and Sreesanth will be present and video evidence, if any, will be used during the hearing which will be conducted as per the ICC Code of Conduct.

Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer of the board, said Harbhajan was answerable to both the IPL and the BCCI. "There will be separate inquiries from the IPL and BCCI," he said.

Engineer was the match referee of the game between the Kings XI Punjab and the Mumbai Indians, after the completion of which Harbhajan allegedly slapped Sreesanth, reducing him to tears on the field. Although both players sought to play down the incident, the Punjab team lodged a formal complaint against Harbhajan Singh to the BCCI. The Indian board took a serious view of the incident and asked him submit his explanation before April 28.

"The inquiry date has been fixed for Monday in New Delhi. We are not going to sweep things under the carpet. The complaint has to be carefully examined before any decision is made," Engineer said. "Everything possible will be done to adjudicate it immediately.

"The complaint made by the management of the Punjab team has been referred to me by Lalit Modi, chief commissioner of the IPL, for immediate adjudication under the ICC Code of Conduct. I have already started the process and will be summoning all concerned and will also seek any video evidence recorded by the host broadcaster.

"Since the process has started I will request the media not to seek any further clarification or information. I will furnish my report to chief commissioner of IPL, keeping in view the ICC code of Conduct and interest of cricket."

The Mumbai Indians are hopeful the issue will be resolved amicably. Reacting to the news that Harbhajan has been temporarily suspended till the hearing on Monday, a top team official of the Mumbai Indians said, "The incident involving Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth of the Kings XI Punjab was most unfortunate.

"The [IPL] governing council has set up an adjudication panel to inquire into the incident. The Mumbai Indians are confident that the decision taken by the panel will be in the best interests of cricket and the Indian Premier League."

IS Bindra, the Punjab Cricket Association president, said they would provide logistical support to Engineer to conduct the inquiry. The hearing will take place at the Maurya Sheraton, New Delhi on April 28th, after which Engineer will announce his verdict.

I guess that's the end of the "elder brother" relationship between him and Sreesanth?

10 IPL matches and....? you did not mention how many ODI and test matches he is banned for.:|

Why would be be banned for international matches? Its a domestic matter and that is where it should stay.

Well atleast the BCCI can ban him:)

for the same reason akhtar was banned.

well done to the bcci for handling this in a swift and fair manner without the usual theatrics that come from our board.

a 10 match ban seems right on the spot.

perhaps the pcb could learn a bit from this ... if u give a fair punishment in the first place there will no need for stupid appeals and tribunals and all that other garbage.

Difference though is that Akthar was using those domestic matches in order to prove his match fitness and form for the international level. This is nothing but masala matches which do not matter in international team selection.

Good Defence point Merc...You can become an attorney for that idiot Bhajji...

But you will lose because he should be getting a life ban. I hope he gets it..

I hate Bhajji...only reason I supported this idiot during monkey-gate was that I hate that symonds 0.00001% more than I hate the moron sardarji.

If Sardarji gets a life ban, then I will distribute sweets.

Piyush will get a chance to play in such a scenario

Why do you hate Symonds?

he deserves it ...he should not only get banned for ipl but more matches also along with a fine

Because of the issues that he made about our 20-20 win celebration. He did that and moronic indian fans responded with start of the sordid monkey-gate affair. That incident kind of brought the racial twist to the way our idiot crowd behaves and has shamed our nation.

Anyways it is my opinion...I wish the sardarji is made to pay for his inumerable sins since his debut. Ban him for life.

Do You Think Bhajji Should Have A Life Time Ban

After hearing what bhajji did ..do you think that he should get a life time ban as reported in the news??

I want to see the slapage video evidence first. From different angles will be good as it might not have been a good enough slap or may have just grazed or maybe doing a high five but Sreesanth was not ready

According to latest Sreesanth statement, it was not just ONE slap. Harbhjan started punching me like crazy. It was "raining" punches.

Yep, it's Symmo's fault. I'm sure that when Sreesanth was making those monkey faces at Harby Harby had a brain snap and thought it was Symmo (since he calls him maaki and all that) and decided to give him a good slapping after the game. It Symmo's fault! :))

I like Harby. Well done mate. Can imagine Sree trying to be a smart ass as usual and Harby just belting him. I am sure Sree was totally innocent and just being nice. :9:

Was only a matter of time before Sree got himself in trouble. Luckily it was an Indian who did it (from the point of view of every other countries players who would have been burned in effigy all over India had they touched the little crybaby).

I like how Sree managed to make sure every TV camera caught him crying. Now he is releasing statements? This bloke is an embarassment to the game. He might be worse than Shoaib. :21:

It's always been obvious the he doesn't exactly behave within the spirit of the team towards his teammates. Small little examples are evident everywhere like when a player dropped a catch off him in the SA tests and he showed him up the next over by fielding the ball, getting up aggressively and furiously pointing towards that player. Not a big deal, but little things like that detract from what the team is trying to achieve.

Slapgate - the IPL's first controversy

Slapgate's stars: Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth (File photo) © AFP

It’s the kind of moment sports writers like to refer to as ironic, when of course it is nothing of the sort. Harbhajan Singh’s alleged slapping of Sreesanth – or push, or comment, or tickle, or whatever it was that reduced Sreesanth to tears in Mohali last night – is all the more bizarre for occurring between players who, despite recent on-field tensions, would usually egg each other on while playing together for India. That’s the so-called irony part, even if irony in its simplest form is saying the opposite of what you really mean.

Ironically perhaps (just checking you’re still paying attention), Harbhajan detected genuine irony in Sreesanth’s supposed comment after the end of a match which extended Mumbai Indians’ losing streak to three. The details of Slapgate, as it will probably be dubbed, remain sketchy, but Sreesanth is reported to have approached Harbhajan with a smile and a “hard luck” – hardly grounds for a flailing hand, you might think, even if Bhajji sensed something other than sincerity in the remark.

Still, there is something of a delicious irony – you see, we just can’t help ourselves – in the fact that the Indian Premier League has been held up as a bastion of cross-cultural bridge-building (read: better relations between India and Australia), but has now sparked an incident between two players of the same nationality.

What must the Australians think of it all? They were fuming earlier in the year when Harbhajan’s three-match ban for allegedly calling Andrew Symonds a monkey was overturned, and were not exactly on Christmas-card-exchanging terms with Sreesanth either. I wonder if a small, unworthy, part of them actually chuckled at last night's farce.

But, really, could you have selected two players more likely to have engaged in handbags at the end of a must-win match for both sides? I remember a one-day county game when Mark Ilott of Essex and Robert Croft of Glamorgan – two of the circuit’s more talkative members, but hardly angry young men by nature – squared up as the game grew tense. There was a lot of talk back then about the sullying of cricket’s fabled spirit, but this time the IPL will probably take the extra attention it receives and move on.

Heck, at least Sreesanth and Harbhajan both play for India. Now, if it had been Symonds doing the slapping/pushing/swearing/tickling, we really would have a full-scale emergency on our hands. And how, er, ironic would that have been after what happened over the winter?

Had to post it

Being a copper he must have picked up interogation techniques!

A deserved punishment :19: !

"The referee studied video tapes of the incident and found the assault by Harbhajan was totally unprovoked. The footage exactly showed that Harbhajan went down the line, wishing all the players, shaking hands with a few players," said Lalit Modi, the commissioner of the IPL who is also a vice-president of the BCCI. "Sreesanth was the third player that he met. Instead of shaking his hand he actually slapped him and continued down the line, shaking hands with the other players."

This is Ugly ! Feed Bhajji to the tigers !

Its not been released yet by BCCI. Not been aired

Seriously, Sreesanth should shut up about how many times he was hit. Stiff upper lip is what is needed here.

LOL! he slapped Sreesanth and continued to shake hands with others (like nothing happened)

So they have got the footage of it .It should be publicised then .

With a money-spinner brain that he has, may be Modi is planning to auction that as well.

"The match referee's report says that one of the umpires, Amiesh Saheba, had warned Sreesanth for his behaviour after the dismissal of a rival player in that match," Nanavati said. "So I will view the events leading up to the incident too, to verify whether there has been any instigation of any sort. In such situations, the background is very important."

cricinfos recent publication!

On another note, Harby's not coming across as a good sport either eh. So Harby = bad sport, Sree = crybaby. Priceless!! :))) :))) :)))

oh so this is where that "hard handshake" story came from!

Is it just me, or is this the funniest incident ever. I don't think I've laughed as hard in a long time lol. Slapstick! (excuse the pun)

Harbhajan deserves any ban he gets, what was he thinking? And apparently he has done this sort of thing before? Imagine he did that to Afridi! I dunno, I think he'd have killed him there and then in the dressing room. Or if not there and then, then he'd have at least plotted his homicide. At least unless time quelled the rage.

LOL at this article from the Mumbai Mirror.

Sreesanth was expected to start shooting off his mouth at the first opportunity and that’s what happened when the paceman got Musavir Khote out. The Mumbai team had passed on message to Sreesanth, saying that he should not target newcomers.

One Mumbai Indian team source told Mumbai Mirror that as Mumbai had just lost their third match in a row, Harbhajan was not in the right frame of mind. While shaking hands after the match, Sreesanth said, “Hard luck... better luck next time.”

As he was saying those words, Bhajji thought he detected the hint of a smile on Sreesanth’s face. That was all it took for the off-spinner to lose his cool and slap him. A little later, Harbhajan realized his mistake and alongwith IS Bindra, he went to Punjab King’s room and apologized to Sree. But the damage was done.

Sleepless night

After the match, Harbhajan spent a sleepless night thinking about his act. Sources say, he called up anyone and everyone in the know but most of them were not ready to extend a helping hand to him. Meanwhile, BCCI took this matter very seriously and suspended the off spinner for the next match.

Today former cricketer Farokh Engineer will conduct a detail enquiry about this sad saga. According to sources, Harbhajan wants to atone for his behaviour and will not argue his case. He will accept his mistake at the hearing and will say sorry. In all probability, he will not be spared this time and may get even a 10-IPL-match ban. He may count himself lucky if the ban is restricted to IPL alone, because the BCCI is seriously thinking about imposing a separate ban for his indiscretion. Furthermore, his greatest supporter Sachin Tendulkar won’t be taking his side this time.

Many cricket pundits say that Harbhajan needs this shock and this may to be blessing in disguise for him. Some of them have advised Harbhajan to seek psychologist help to control his unnecessary aggression. At the same time Sreeshant will have to answer few tricky questions about his behaviour too.
