RIP Australia: After Gabba fortress is breached, Australian cricket breathes its last on January 19, 2021

The Australia cricket team suffered their first loss in Brisbane after 32 years as an inexperienced Indian cricket team breached their fortress.

April 13, 1994. England defeated the West Indies by 208 runs at Bridgetown, Barbados. It was the first loss that West Indies had suffered in 59 years in their fortress of the Kensington Oval. The after-effects would be dramatic. West Indies would go on to lose a series against Australia for the first time in 21 years and since then, they have never been the same again. If there was one starting point of the decline of West Indies cricket, it started on April 13, 1994 in Barbados. 27 years later, on January 19, 2021, in the fast-fading light of the Gabba, the Indian cricket team finally ended the last big fortress in world cricket as they defeated Australia by three wickets to end Australia's 32-year run at the Gabba.

When Rishabh Pant hit Josh Hazlewood for a boundary to long-off, the Gabbatoir had been breached. It was no longer Australia's fortress. In one stroke, the Australian fortress had crumbled. Pound to dust by an Indian cricket team. The result will hurt Tim Paine's Australia even more. There was no Virat Kohli, no Mohammed Shami, no Jasprit Bumrah and no Ravichandran Ashwin. India did not have experience in bowling. Australia's bowling had over 250 Tests of experience and over 1000 wickets. Yet, in the Gabba, in their own fortress, India outbowled and finally when it mattered, India out batted Australia. In 1977 and 2014, India fell short by 16 and 48 runs in Brisbane and Adelaide when they had to chase 350. But, in 2021, India finally chased down 328 and won a series for the second consecutive time in Australia.

In 2018/19, Australia did not have the services of David Warner and Steve Smith. It was their weak batting that saw them losing the series 1-2. In 2020/21, they had Steve Smith, they had Marnus Labuschagne. David Warner was injured and did not look his best. Their bowling unit was the best as compared to India. Australia had them on the mat mentally after blasting them out for 36 in Adelaide on December 19, 2020. Yet, Australia lost. Yet, Australia lost in their fortress. This is the class of the Indian cricket team of 2020/21, a brash new India as compared to the weak 80s and 90s.

In the aftermath of Sydney, with Australia's 18-month 'nice guy' image taking a battering after the draw in Sydney and with this loss in Brisbane, Australia's fortunes will now take a big hit. Just like the Barbados loss started the decline for West Indies cricket, the Brisbane loss could signal the true end of Australia's dominance at home. When Australia lost for the first time in 15 years against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2008, a mock obituary was written in many Australian media outlets. When India beat them for the first time in 2018/19, the name was engraved on the tombstone. Now, in 2020/21, Australian cricket can finally RIP in their once-called fortress of The Gabba. When Australia lost for the first time at home after 16 years, the Proteas sang 'You ain't singing anymore'. Now, in 2021, after breaching Gabba, the Indian cricket team could very well be singing, "You ain't sledging anymore'.

They're doing it worse than us - they have sacrificed a huge chunk of their summer to the BBL.

The only worthy test batsmen they've produced are the half-mad, mentally off balance ones like Smith or Labuschagne. Everybody else is an LoI centric Finch/Maxwell type hitter.

Meh.

No such thing as permanence in life. And cricket is just a small part of life.

In terms of this particular series, the blueprint for beating AUS was already present. However, still do not expect countries like PAK, SRL, WIN to be able to emulate this attritional level or discipline i.e. execution.

AUS has not been the sweeping dominant force it once was and may not become that again for years to come. But will still challenge and be challenged by only the strong teams.

Hyperbolic article.

Australian cricket is resilient. Their system keeps throwing up a Thomson, Warne, Smith etc.

The currently pace attack is very good indeed with Cummins in the Lillee class. But they have a problem with the batting. Labuschange and Smith cannot score all the runs all the time. Paine should be replaced as skipper too.

Not really, the Australians lost to SA at home in 2008, the ashes in 2010-11, to SA again in 2016, Ind in 2018-19 & 2020-21.

It just highlights the decline in quality in Australian Cricket when you compare it to the side from 1999 to 2007

A fantastic performance by the tourists, well played to India and commiserations to the Aussies!

I think India have found a few players this tour. Gill looks to be a star, alongside Pant and potentially Siraj.

It's too early to be writing Australia off I reckon. Things always look worse than they are in moments like this, but they'll be back!

In the meantime, the Blackcaps are #1 for sometime!

Stupid article. Australia will continue to produce high quality cricketers who are test class. The likes of Labu, Green, a healthy Pucovski all look like high quality players. And then you have the likes of Travis Head etc. who are a rung below.

Nah. One thing I have learnt living in Australia for past 5-6 years is, the word "Accountability".

They will hold a complete and honest post mortem of this loss, pretty objectively and then take action accordingly. And then they will come back.

Too strong of a sporting culture, with robust systems in place.
If you come to Australia in Summer, which is in Nov and December, you will see Club matches going on and you can watch any game. From the lowest grade in Grade 4 cricket, to top level Domestic match.
The level of intensity, preparation of the teams, even for kids playing is the same here.

They are playing with hard ball, in full kit, at every level of cricket, with top intensity.

They blasted every team in between 2018 loss to India and between this one. They still are a very good team.
They will make a comeback. And English team beware for next Ashes, wounded Aussies are doubly dangerous.

Typical B-grade hyperbole that some thrashy outlets like DNAIndia indulge in!

It's only a game at the end of the day. India played very well, and the Aussies didn't have an answer. Period. It does not have to be extrapolated to imply anyone's demise.

LOL. Australia has strong sporting culture. It doesn't not depend only on Talunt. There is some decline in their quality. They still won 2015 WC very comfortably. They will bounce back. A change of leadership should do the trick.

What a truck load of trash!

The author doesn't even have the cricketing knowledge of normal fans.

Caribbean cricket and Australian cricket are chalk and cheese. The former heavily depended on natural talent and had no knowledge or inclination to put systems in place. They assumed that the factory line of talent that they used to produce - the likes of Sobers, Lloyd, Kanhai, Richards, Marshall and others would be endless. That was the cardinal mistake they committed. Unfortunately it did not turn out that way. Young caribbean boys wanted to become basket ball players because of economic reasons and cricket could not compete with it. That led to stagnation of good incoming talent . Even the ones that came in were more inclined towards white ball rather than red ball cricket. It is a matter of choice and so that is why Windies are a sorry red ball team. They are world class in shortest format as everyone here knows.

Australia on the other hand have a long sheffield history and the amount of respect is given to the baggy green is just another level. Although BBL is taking the sheen of the baggy green offlate from a viewership standpoint, I doubt whether it would cannibalize their love for test matches. Australians hate to lose and always act once their team has faced some serious reversals. Pretty sure they are going to bounce back after introspection and corrective measures.

i think alot of teams are having to field new players and we may see more results like this. India had new players, so did aus, england will do the same, Pakistan is going through a major rebuilding phase(some would argue its always rebuilding), lanka have new players, south africa also has introduced new ones. The list goes on. I expect more crazy results in the next year or two.

The team that dominates may well be the one that can bed in a core quickly. Aussies will be everyones bet to do so and then India. The rest including England will be fighting for third fourth and fifth for now.

The article looks like it was written by an edgy 19 year old freelancer...

DNAIndia lmao. :yk

No wonder OP picked it up though. :inti

After 36, all thought India's tour was over.

India bounced back.

After the series, many claiming aus breathed it's last breath.

Aus will bounce back.

That's what a stable system does. You may have some down phases but you'll again rise.

Let any other team come to Aus and opposite script will repeat.

South Africa have beaten Australia in Australia on their last 3 visits I think

Lol Cricket Australia will be desperate to have India tour Australia more frequently for ODI's, T20's, Test series but lol not sure about the Australian team, they will be mentally scarrd for a long time and will want some easy opposition to feel good about themselves again

On the other hand, the Pakistani team can cry all they want about not being invited to Australia enough, not getting enough A team exposure there but you have to make the most of your chances there. If all you have to show for yourself is being white washed in your last five series even if they occur after every 5 years, you will not be in high demand. When you arrive in Australia you make the most of the limited chances you get there

Asutralia will destroy the next team they are going to play. Pathetic headline from a c-grade news outlet.

This is some nasty clickbait by a trashy Indian media house, hoping to trigger Aussies. Indian media can be as sickening as that in England or Australia.

Pound to Pound, Australia is one of the most sporting, incl cricketing, nations in the world. Australia is not going away. It will remain in top 3 for the next decade at least.
