Has Hashim Amla surpassed Rahul Dravid as a Test batsman?

Having got impressed by Amla's performance in the final test vs India, I would argue that we have the guy who is an ATG and has already surpassed some of the legends in test cricket .

If we look beyond stats, he has already proved his worth as a batsmen in all major countries and has already proved his worth in conditions really conducive to bowling.

Unlike a Dravid who failed in Aus and SA, Amla has been successful in every country and has been successful across various conditions conducive for bowling.

While Dravid was more known for his defense and grinding out the bowlers by nullifying any chance to them, Amla can not only be the wall and grind out but also counter-attack his way and grab the game on his day. I haven't seen a test player as tough as him.

Amla for me is better as he can adapt to different conditions and raise his tempo if needed. I believe Amla has T20 tons? Dravid would never be able to score a 100 in a T20 match. Dravid's defence was better imo but it's better than almost all batsmen who have played the game.

Actually both replies ended up proving my point. Dravid, Sachin and Punter lost lot of average because of their desire to play more, but they were intiallyso good that their Atg level was never questioned.
Now take Amla for example , he was Averaging 52.8 and now 49 and unless some extraordinary thing didn't happened he will end up around 47 or may be even lower.
Now unless you are biased nobody will going to count under 48 or 47 average player as a clear cut atg.
He need in retire in one year time to end up as atg.

He is far from it.

At same point of career both had played 193 innings in 113 tests. Amla has scored 8786 runs at avg of 49, Dravid had 9564 runs at avg of 56. This is while Amla played most of his games at home.

That's first indication of how big difference is between them.

50 is set as bar because great batsmen tend to average ~55 at their peak and end with 50 average.

For me he is already an atg, I really like his cool and calm approach. He is right now my favorite SA batsman. But it is not about me, for being a clear cut atg he needs to end his career over 49 if not 50 average. Anything around 48 and it will depends upon personal choice.
If ended up on 47 or lower then very few expert will call him clear cut atg.
He need to find form very fast and before it is too late

You must have mixed up test and ODIs. Amla has always been a clutch test player. It's ABD who's a soft test batsman, not Amla. Amla has plenty of match winning performance in test

If Dravid is, then these two definitely are as well.

Amla is a top player no doubt about that, but Dravid was a legend and probably had the best defensive technique of any batsman in history, even better than Boycott or Gavaskar. It is difficult for any batsman to reach the class of Dravid. Beyond Bradman and Tendulkar there would not be many players who would clearly rate above Dravid.

With all due respect, both to you and Dravid, his average of 29 and 40 in South Africa and Australia makes your claim seem a bit hollow. Especially when we consider that Dravid's average in Australia is actually inflated. He had the luxury of facing a very weak Australian attack in one of the series he played. Amla, meanwhile, averages 45 in Australia and 53 in South Africa. That average of 53 is against Australia, England, Pakistan and New Zealand, teams that have had good pace attacks throughout Amla's career and have taken advantage of the South African conditions.

However, in recent times we've seen Sanga and Younis taking their average higher right up until their last series. Amla is nowhere as fit as Khan or Sanga so he might not replicate that twilight peak, however there is a chance he might.

I believe #3 is the toughest spot in a Test batting line up. Dravid has faced something like 31000 deliveries (from memory) in his Test career. This is about 6000 more than Tendulkar and at around 50 Test matches less. Amla has faced about 18000 Test deliveries. With this in statistic in mind, I will choose Dravid as my number 3.

Best thing about Amla is that he brings his 'A' game against the best teams and in the toughest conditions. Averages 50 at home, the hardest place to bat, by far, where visiting top-order batsmen average around 25 and the likes of G. Smith average below 40; 60+ in India which is considered the biggest test of your spin-playing ability and where several ATGs have gone to fail, 60+ in England which is likewise considered the biggest test of your swing-playing ability and where some other ATGs have failed; and an average of 45 in Australia which sounds so much better for a Pakistan fan given the averages of some of our greats down under.

A 250 against India's greatest team ever in their backyard, a 300 against England's best modern-day side in their backyard, a series-winning 196 in Australia with South Africa defending the #1 ranking, centuries against Saeed Ajmal in the UAE, ditto for Herath and let's not forget his hundred against the incredible Shane Bond.

Comparatively, he has been much quieter against the West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe unlike some other greats who fill their boots against the weaker teams. However, if Shane Warne can be an ATG with an average of 25+, an exception can also be made for Amla. Besides, it's not like he's retired already, he can still retire with an average of 50+.



If Dravid is, then these two definitely are as well.



With all due respect, both to you and Dravid, his average of 29 and 40 in South Africa and Australia makes your claim seem a bit hollow. Especially when we consider that Dravid's average in Australia is actually inflated. He had the luxury of facing a very weak Australian attack in one of the series he played. Amla, meanwhile, averages 45 in Australia and 53 in South Africa. That average of 53 is against Australia, England, Pakistan and New Zealand, teams that have had good pace attacks throughout Amla's career and have taken advantage of the South African conditions.

Why does SA produce that many 50+ average batsmen , if Amla is an ATG cos he scores runs here , what does that make the likes of Kallis , AB or Smith who did much better than him ?

Every time we toured our bowlers have owned him , especially on pitches with assistance and there is a similar pattern all through his career .offcourse if you search you will find a few decent innings in his career , but you dont become an ATG by playing few decent innings . Hes simply does not have enough impact or quality knocks . So I have no reason to rate him that high .

Let us not forget Dravid played best part of his career with Sachin and he outshined him in many matches.
Even in twilight of his career Nasser Hussain wanted English batsmen to learn from Dravd about how to counter lateral movement. He is that good. There is one and only Dravid the wall. Also he is king of partnerships. He has the knack of bringing the best out of his partner.

It may be his home conditions but only an ill-informed person will say that scoring runs in the subcontinent is tougher for a #3 batsman than scoring runs in South Africa. There is a reason visiting top order batsmen average in the 20s in South Africa and someone lile Graeme Smith averages below 40 there. You still get the odd flat pitch in South Africa as well but the overhead conditions and altitude of some of the grounds ensures that the pace bowlers are always in the game. ABD and Smith did much better than him? At what exactly? The only great South African batsman who has a mighty average at home is Kallis and Kallis is Kallis. And he also batted at #4 in a lot of matches, behind Smith and Amla.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about if you think that India getting lucky with dismissing him means there is a similar pattern in his career. Anyone who has seen enough of Amla's career knows that he was invincible against the moving ball during his peak and even at 34, he just averaged 40+ in a series in England, in conditions that Cook has claimed were the toughest he has batted in. Did better than anyone else other than Joe Root, who is in his prime. His twin half-centuries in the last test he played have earned him plaudits from everyone who knows a thing or two about cricket. But of course, you know better.

Whether you like it or not, Amla has simply been one of the most impactful players of modern times. Those innings I mentioned before, the 300 in England, the 250+ in India and the 190 in Australia were all high-impact, high pressure innings. The #1 ranking was on the line in all three series, I believe and they were all match-winning and even series-winning innings. He also scored a few other tons in those series for good measure and did all that a batsman can do to ensure that South Africa win those series. They won two of them but despite Amla's best efforts, the other South African batsmen could not hang with him in India. These are just three examples. Amla has played countless more innings under pressure in tests.

Dravid, as mentioned before, has failed in South Africa and Australia, barring the one series against a second string Aussie attack. However, he was incredible in England and almost everywhere else and is definitely a superb batsman himself. However, the hypocrisy of a minority of Indian fans really shows when they try to make it seem like Dravid was that much better than Amla, Sanga and Younis, when in reality, they are all on the same level. Champions of the game, masterful batsmen.
