Has the Champions Trophy proven that Misbah-ul-Haq was holding us back?

I say yes. I defended Misbah for what he did and his service. But there was always an excuse ready for him that he's doing as much as he can with the limited resources. He didn't achieve anything in ODIs though he did draw test series against England.

Sir viv richards just mentioned the same thing on PTV post match show

Now in Hindsight it looks like that way. But you can never tell. Maybe there was genuine limited talent in that period.

Misbah, Afridi, Azhar, abc, xyz cant do much because Sarfraz is simply superior to all.

He will be the best captain of world soon with results if he is provided with some decent modern odi batsmen.

Yes, he had two chuckers chucking away at his disposal yet could achieve nothing.

Misbah won an asia cup and a series in SA. But tbh he held the team back primarily because he trusted experience over youth.

Its more of Sarfraz leading us to heights rather than Misbah holding us.

Replace Sarfraz with some other fan favorite captain Imad Wasim etc and we will continue hovering over no 8.

He is out of ODI Cricket for 28 months.

Had Rahat Ali not dropped Watson story could have been different.

If Perera did not drop Sarfraz's sitter story would have been different.

You have to wait and see how Pak team performs under Sarfraz for at least an year in LOI's.

A string of 3 good games does not prove that Misbah was holding the team back.

Yep, i cant see misbah debuting a batsmen like Fahkar in a tournament. He would continue to play shezhad, saying his expereince matters

lol!!!!!

pakistan is ranked 8th today thanks to misbah and his legacy azhari ali

and winning those 3 good games was never even dreamt by misbah

String of 3 good games?
More like streak of 3 knockout games against world class teams.
The problem area has always been chasing the runs down but he won the toss and elected to field every time and we chased the total down.
All this after a huge loss to India. Thank god we've moved away from Misbah.

It evens out. 2 crucial catches were dropped today as well.
Misbah was just a captain good at making the upper management happy. He was just a disciplined man, nothing else.

With end of Misbah era, a dark cloud is lifted from Pakistan team, breath of fresh air now.

Exactly, it's not like he left us on top of icc rankings. He left us in this hole. Azhar was always his choice. Kudos to Sheheryar Khan who opposed him for once and fought for Saifi to become the captain.

It's a shame that it took the 2017 CT for people to wake up and smell the coffee

There was no PSL when Misbah was captain. Meaning No hasan Ali, no amir, no shadab, no faheem, ajmal bas banned, hafeez was banned. Can not really blame Misbah. we had limited talent.

I don't know whether it was Misbah or the selectors but Misbah was always hesitant to try out new players and he always tried to play it safe. Misbah's time as captain was the worst in our history of ODIs. No development, no new cricketers. Misbah was a one trick pony in what he had with Ajmal Hafeez and Afridi trio. He won the series in SA because of 2 new all rounders - Bilawal Bhatti and Anwar Ali Khan. The strange thing is whenever Pakistan has brought in new guys they have performed to a certain extent. As soon as there is a dip in there performance the older guys were back. One major example is how late Sarfraz came into the team and how the management was so adamant to keep with Kamran first and then with Umar Akmal for the longest time.

No he had but was reluctant to give them long run, defensive enough to bring them in or move them up the order best examples were maqsood and Shafiq after having a few successes not backed to come at 3 instead the chance went to failing hafeez, MISBAH has to make juniors scapegoat for losses and has to meddle with seniors to save his captaincy was a more bitter reason for him to hold back...

he showed that MYK and Hafeez without his bowling doesnt belong to the ODIs in the CWC'15...

afridi was too big for him to boot out and called his retirement too same as MISBAH..

CWC'15 was the only tournament MISBAH played with authority, shrewdness and attacking with a young team...

What trees did we pull off when Misbah had Ajmal and Hafeez in their prime. He also had most of the current crop that underperformed. If anything, it's a testiment to the point that I'm making that Sarfraz is doing what Misbah couldn't dream of doing even with the players that played one or two ODis on their career. He doesn't have the luxury of knowing his bowlers that Misbah had.
Regarding your point of PSL, Fakhar is not the find of PSL, neither is Hassan, Amir nor Faheem.

Exactly misbah waqar younis and shehryar did greater damage by making azhar the odi captain for 2 years otherwise we would have already progressed a lot in this format

Yep, i cant see misbah debuting a batsmen like Fahkar in a tournament. He would continue to play shezhad, saying his expereince matters

He played Haris Sohail... an unknown back in the day,

He played Yasir Shah, he was an unknown quantity in ODIs back in the day..

in the WC

Agreed... But faheem wasnt an IPL product... MISBAH had pre-injury junaid, irfan and a young wahab...

But MISBAH had hammad azam, umar amin, haris sohail, nasir jamshed, fawad alam, performing UA and shehzad, maqsood and asad shafiq too... but MISBAH after few failures booted them outta the team and inconsistent selection and chances did it for hammad, amin and sohail during his early days...MISBAH wanted to play safe and save his captaincy went with hafeez, myk and Afridi who are too big for any captain to drop ,,, though he kicked them out , came back so quickly and doing their same one off performances in a 5 match series..

Are we chasing 350s now? We have done nothing different to what we did in the Misbah era

The only difference is our bowling is clicking..

Also sharjeel was discovered in the Misbah era but he flopped badly in the start

he wasn't half the captain Sarfaraz is, and his preference for oldies over youth was infuriating... So yes!

He played Haris Sohail... an unknown back in the day,

He played Yasir Shah, he was an unknown quantity in ODIs back in the day..

in the WC

haris played at 5 in his debut game against WI and then made a comeback after hafeez was banned...

Once hafeez got banned for bowling Haris was the like a like replacement of hafeez for misbah....

yasir shah was a settled leggie in tests before that WC...Only maqsood was the newbie from the start who got selected on the back of domestic performances and given a go at no. 3 straight up just for 2 games then booted down the order till 7...

Without question even a brand new cricket fan could of seen how detrimental Misbah was to our ODI side.

He played Haris Sohail... an unknown back in the day,

All had played some Odis prior to that, Yasir had already destroyed Australia in the UAE

100% yes ... his tenure as ODI captain was definitely holding back pak... I have no doubt....

he made this same resurgence in CWC'15 after losing to india in the 1st game... if u all can remember he dropped his senior buddies and started to attack with four pacers and bring a young batting line up...

CWC'15 was the only tournament where i feel MISBAH played shrewd role as captain and an attacking line up....he couldnt get afridi outta the team as he is too big a figure and also called his retirement after the CWC same like MISBAH...

All had played some Odis prior to that, Yasir had already destroyed Australia in the UAE

Yasir was your trump card against Aussie in the test matches, from where he played in the ODIs after that...

Haris didn't feature until late 2014, before that 1 or 2 games in 2013 where he failed to deliver

This is the problem with our cricket.

Win a game, and you think everything is alright.

Problem is you guys have no idea what is wrong or right.

Remember 1 thing, had Pakistan lost the last game, we would had been no where near the finals.

Pakistan only made the finals due to good fielding. Had the same fielding level been shown in the 2015 world cup, we would had made the next round atleast.
And we all know who performed and who didn't in the last ct.

Its good we made the finals today, but no need to discredit Misbah for what he has done

Maqsood was his own worst enemy, he was the next Inzamam according to some when he first came, was tried every where from 3-7 because we needed a long batting order, didn't perform anywehre... you can look at his average if you want

Yasir was not settled he was only recently introduced against Aus in November after being Man of the series against them after ajmal was banned...

Shehzad came back under Misbah but sadly couldn't continue his good form post 2013-14...

Junaid Khan got injured... Irfan was fit unfit for most of his tenure,

Nasir Jamshed came and went under Misbah...

So its not like Misbah had alot of luck playing all these youngsters.. most of them went rogue, some of them were never consistent..

Only Ajmal was the mainstay, everything besides that was temporary and had no substance

He played Haris Sohail... an unknown back in the day,

Haris sohail literally earned his place by performing in almost every game he played. Problem was that whenever the team as a whole failed, the first to be axed were the youngsters. Had haris not performed consistently, he would have been dropped after a few bad performancea.

Ask yourselves, would Misbah have put these many youngsters IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT let alone in a series against a minnow like Zimbabwe.

Once you get the answer to that question you will realize why Misbah's captaincy was cancerous for Pakistan.

Haris wasn't axed after the World cup he was injured, he started performing in the Newzealand series befroe the world cup, and was never axed after that, infact he was the premier no.3 batsman before he got injured for almost 1.5 years

Was Misbah responsible for persisting with Wahab and Rahat and keeping guys like Junaid and Hasan Ali out?
Was he responsible for persisting with Azhar Ali as the captain?
What about playing Hafeez, Shoib, Yonus and Afridi no matter what...

I think selection committee and management must have had a big role in it.

?? So U agreeing with what i said.

I said that when Misbah was our ODI captain. I said that he was holding the team back with his defensive approach. Misbah was a good Test captain though and he did lead us to the #1 ranking. But ODI is a totally different ballgame. That attacking mindset was missing, which we now finally have seen in Sarfraz (thankfully). I hope over the years we do find some modern day batsmen, so the team could be led to great heights.

Give credit to sethi who has transformed our cricket since taking over.

As much as its Misbahs fault he was baggage from previous administration. Misbah standard is picking buddies over ability and losing with grace.

Yasir was your trump card against Aussie in the test matches, from where he played in the ODIs after that...

Again difference between that and Debuting

Misbah did pull off trees which your short memory completely forget. he did achieve something that other could not do, mostly series win in SA. then he won in India (in ODI).

Why ball starts reversing when Pakistan bowls so early is it due to Imad wasim using on one side to land ????

Misbah is not good captain.

it's not a question of format.

We are at #6 in tests.
almost the same (or worse) place where he become the captain.

It was embarrassing listening to Australian commentators. After MoYo, Misbah is the worst captain in the world ever.

Then he recommended Azhar just to ensure that Pakistan keep this losing tuk tuk mentality. Misbah knows how to get the worst out of everyone.

Was Misbah responsible for persisting with Wahab and Rahat and keeping guys like Junaid and Hasan Ali out?

agree. I do not know why people blame misbah for everything.

Again difference between that and Debuting

Here debuts of Raees happened, however he didn't debut here he was part of the t20 circuit, Shadab wasn't a debut either he has played ODIs and played under the recommendation of Misbah actually...

Which leaves out Fahim ashraf and Fakhar Zaman, lets be honest Fahim would never have played had he not played like he did in the warm up game...

While fakhar would never have been tried if Shehzad wasn't such a big flop, or has been for a while

One request: Misbah has retired now, so please move on from him and stop criticizing him because Pakistan made it to a final.

Now in Hindsight it looks like that way. But you can never tell. Maybe there was genuine limited talent in that period.

He was a bit like Azharuddin. He held back India from progressing and lacked leadership potential to select and groom players like Ganguly did later on
Misbah did the same for Pakistan. We were a good team after the 2011 WC

There was no PSL when Misbah was captain. Meaning No hasan Ali, no amir, no shadab, no faheem, ajmal bas banned, hafeez was banned. Can not really blame Misbah. we had limited talent.

Even if we had PSL its the mentality that lead to the dark era we had from 2011 to 2017
His approach was ultra negative completely opposite to Imran

Most of the 90's legends have retired and moved on, that hasn't stopped you from criticizing them. Hypocrisy much?

Most of the 90's legends have retired and moved on, that hasn't stopped you from criticizing them. Hypocrisy much?

I don't go out of my way to bring them up, I only correct people when they overrate their achievements. Misbah can be criticized but to create threads just to criticize him because we made a final is quite desperate.

Yes! And thank you for speaking the truth brother. It takes a lot of courage :)

To ease some people's agony:

Yes Misbah was holding us back and stopped us from winning the 2015 World Cup.

You have to wait and see how Pak team performs under Sarfraz for at least an year in LOI's.

A string of 3 good games does not prove that Misbah was holding the team back.
Honestly, Sarfraz performance is irrelevant. I think the bottom line is that Misbah was holding us back. This would be true even if lose the next 10 matches

lol!!!!!

pakistan is ranked 8th today thanks to misbah and his legacy azhari ali

and winning those 3 good games was never even dreamt by misbah

I am loving the way people are finally being open and honest, and finally speaking out! Thank you for your courage and honesty brother! We have held back for too long. Finaly let there be some kind of accountability for those who held our cricket back

I had been a Misbah fan. But slowly started feeling distasteful of him for selfishly lingering on, wanting to end his career on high. Now seeing Sarfaraz' approach to game, my eyes have suddenly wide opened. Misbah had been holding us back for friggin half a decade, pretended he had a bad team and what-not, that he was the lone man fighting, and yet we believed him!

This.

But yes, he was holding you guys back with his defensive captaincy, slow batting and awful selections, sidelining youth, which was such a shame, because Pakistan could have actually won an ICC event as it was boosted by 2 unstoppable chuckers as well.

Its more of Sarfraz leading us to heights rather than Misbah holding us.

Replace Sarfraz with some other fan favorite captain Imad Wasim etc and we will continue hovering over no 8.

No matter how much you parrot the same lines, it's not going to be true.

Take Sarfraz out of this team and it will probably improve it.

Team was almost same and we were no 8 in rankings. Restricting oppositions to 220s in conditions where 300+ is par is no joke.

Ok replace Sarfraz the captain with any of your favorite and we will come back to this thread ;)

btw remember 444 and 2 300+ scores last year against same England? ;)

There was no PSL when Misbah was captain. Meaning No hasan Ali, no amir, no shadab, no faheem, ajmal bas banned, hafeez was banned. Can not really blame Misbah. we had limited talent.

Excuses and Excuses. He never wanted new talent. Always kept selecting the same bunch of experienced players. Did not really trust youth and had a high preference and deference to experience and seniority. He was apparently a very nice guy. As well as being kind and approachable to journalists which meant that many people and some journalists overlocked his flaws.

Admittedly there were also some in the media that treated him unfairly but I digress

One major example is how late Sarfraz came into the team and how the management was so adamant to keep with Kamran first and then with Umar Akmal for the longest time.

If anyone is in doubt this is a really good explanation

He played Haris Sohail... an unknown back in the day,

He played Yasir Shah, he was an unknown quantity in ODIs back in the day..

in the WC

He reluctantly played him after having him the squad for almost a year. As a fan of Harris I can tell you that it was extremely frustrating. Even then he was not keen on giving him a chance and mad him bat in the lower order instead of at the top. People are very very kind to Misbah. If only we had been kinder to some other former players who knows what Pak cricket might have achieved.

Are we chasing 350s now? We have done nothing different to what we did in the Misbah era

The only difference is our bowling is clicking..

Also sharjeel was discovered in the Misbah era but he flopped badly in the start

Misbah should have fought to keep Sharjeel in the team. Just "discovering" him and discarding him after a few failures means that Misbah gets no credit only blame

This is the problem with our cricket.

You are right about the bold part. Todays victory is no reason to discredit Misbah. However there are many other very legitimate reasons to criticize him. And it seems that people are finally waking up and doing so. They are displaying courage and speaking the truth. They have been silent for too long.

I would say that Misbah did not take us forward.

He actually moved us backwards by about ten years. Once all the other khalifas like Hafeez and Malik are gone as well, we would finally be able to move forward and compete with the rest of the world.

One request: Misbah has retired now, so please move on from him and stop criticizing him because Pakistan made it to a final.

I think it is actually very important to criticize him because:
1) There must be some accountability even if it is just in terms of his reputation amongst the fans
2) It will (hopefully) help us to learn from his mistakes in terms of his approach to ODI's and team selection in general
3) It will shatter the myth that has been built up by his fans, supporters and certain sections of the media that he was some kind of legendary savior

I am very happy that you realize this brother. You have highlighted some very important points

I don't go out of my way to bring them up, I only correct people when they overrate their achievements. Misbah can be criticized but to create threads just to criticize him because we made a final is quite desperate.

This is a forum for discussion, cheer up.

Maybe, maybe not.

Misbah is a host on some TV channel and he genuinely seems happy for the teams performances and praises the youngster because of his this modest attitude I think it is alright to forgive him.
