Let’s put everything into consideration, in last couple of decades world cups have been batting shoutouts or dominant by couple of teams.

After a long time we are seeing a bowlers World Cup.
Close matches and in both groups 7 out of 8 teams had chance to go through semis till the last match.
Major upsets
New teams performing admirably.
Too quality fast bowling.
Top quality spin.

If the knockouts are as good as super 8, this will go down as the best World Cup in modern times.

Thoughts?

Are you out of your mind? Best world cup? This one?
Don't you know that any tournament in which Pakistan does badly and India does well has been fixed by the BCCI? Should you still be told this?

World's best team not even reaching the super 8 and you call it the best world cup in recent years?
What sacrilege, man!

Yes.

In West Indies there is a perfect balance between bat and ball.

There were many upsets and we also got to know that some associate teams can definitely compete with big dogs if we give them enough experience.

Afghanistan’s victory against Aus was iconic, so was USA vs Pak.
Ind vs Pak was entertaining, so was Eng vs Sa and Sa vs Ban

So many iconic matches too

Yes. I enjoyed it.

Boring crowds but games have been superb.

Ya crowds left a bit to be desired but the atmosphere has been festive amongst the little crowd we had in stadiums.

Especially in Windies it feels like a carnival

I don't like crowds in Windies. A bit boring.

Atmosphere is much better in England, India, or South Africa.

Absolutely.

Last super over game was best game and result had it semis spot for 3 different teams.

Cracker of WC so far.

This world cup did not follow the script, and for the first time, associate nations proved that they weren't here just to make up numbers.

I have had an anti-associate stance for years, they brought nothing to the table in the past except for getting smashed and giving away world records for fun.

This seemed very different. Atleast for T20s, the gulf isn't as wide as I imagined and it's been a pleasure to see this.

Apart from crowd for some matches ,actual matches are memorable. This match is one of the best match world T20 history given the fact 3 teams had a chance for half the game.

It’s been fun to watch the low scoring thrillers where toss doesn’t matter much. Was kinda bored watching the snoozy run-fests T20 has become off late.

Absolutely yes.

What a WorldT20 we are witnessing .

Every game were important so far .

This is best World T20 for me .

A boring World Cup.

3 of big nations out at expense of USA, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Poor USA and Bangaldesh Super 8 matches.

Afganistan at least somewhat competed but Australia will defeat Afghanistan 9 times out of 10 and they fluked a win to reach semis.

Will be a one sided semi vs South Africa.

Dont say I told you so.

Only Indian fans can enjoy this World Cup, cause their team seems to be unstoppable.

To be honest even though pakistan is out, overall it's been a great world cup for many reasons:
1. Many good close games
2. Good competition between bat and ball, and not total Patta wickets
3. Not knowing who will qualify till last day of games
4. Several upsets
5. Opportunity for many associate teams and them mostly putting a decent show with 3 test playing nations not making it in Second round
6. Conducive timing for US viewers (more of a personal thing)
7. Intro to cricket for US going well better than expected
8. Festive atmosphere at grounds
9. Many hat tricks
10. Good commentary
11. Variety of pitches and conditions
12. Top quality leg spin on display

Negatives:
1. Pakistan early exit (obviously doesn't apply to all)
2. Full washout on some early round games (little bit of rain handled well especially in West indies but the Fort Lauderdale washout situation was quite bad with ground staying unfit for play even when no rain came)
3. USA in second round making one group totally one sided, other group was much more interesting. Talking about super 8.
4. West indies not making semis disappointing for host
5. Bangladesh messing up , I would have preferred Australia to qualify as they are more genuine title contenders.

India would beat the Australian ODI 7 out of 10 times. They lost anyway in the final despite being superior. That is how the World Cup happens. Weren't they praised for their "ruthlessness" and "professionalism" in ICC events? Losing to both teams and expecting to sneak through because of reputation is not World Cup. Lot of big teams have been knocked out in World Cup soccer.

It's different in soccer because if an outlier plays well in soccer they don't get humiliated in next stage.

In Cricket, associates have one glory match, qualify and then get thrashed right, left and centre in the next stage by nearly every team.

India vs Australia final in ODI ?

You are mistaken.

Australia in finals would give India a run for their money every time and probably would be 50-50 every time.

All the matches USA PLAYED in Super 8 opponent, was expected to win 99 percent of time.

That's just poor showing for a team who has qualified for next round.

Pakistan despite crashing out would have had better odds in Super 8 even without starting.

You guys all don't get it.

This is not promoting the game.

It is making games boring instead of thrilling when one side is expected to win even before toss of a coin 99 percent of time.

What sacrilege, man!

Literally no one has that on here tbf. 99% of Pakistan fans know we are terrible.

But for associate upset Pakistan would not have reached the final in 2022. South Africa would beat Netherlands 9 out of 10 times in T20. They lost and missed the boat. Pakistan sneaks through miraculously. This is no different from that. This time also Pakistan had destiny in their own hands. Just that they were not good enough.

As a Pakistani fan, this tournament has been nothing but painful to watch. Something I would want to delete from my memory completely. However, some of the games have been incredible and quite entertaining to watch as a neutral.

Yes most definitely. Very competitive and matches have been great .

Yes, it has been.

Emerging/Associate teams habe done well. That's good for the sport. The format made every match count.

Definitely seems like it.

Pak have only themselves to blame for losing to a trashy side like usa.

Which World Cup was the last one where 0 results were influenced by rain? That is the best World Cup.

The best and fairest World Cup where all teams were fully responsible for their success & failure.

It's been an absolute non event for me personally.

Firstly, there is an overkill of 20/20's, what with various leagues, bi laterals and then a whole World Cup in the same format is just painful.

Then you have games in places like Florida during the rainy season followed by the Caribbean, also in the rainy season.

To top it all, some of the best games ( in terms of match ups) have been scheduled for 1:30am UK time which again makes it impossible to follow..

This is just my own personal view.

You are talking about teams perspective, from viewers perspective the excitement of World Cup is when there’s equal contest between bat and ball + close matches + upsets.

There might be a case for this being a great WC but for me, the fact that 2/3 games every day take place in the middle of the night where I live or before I wake up means i've been able to watch very little of it.

The crowds are actually good for evening games. The morning games start at like 10 AM just to utilise subcontinent prime time slots. Nobody wakes up at that time in Carrebian.

The two things I look for in a World Cup is a fair balance between bat and ball that allows the widest range of skills to be showcased, and close games. This tournament has delivered both in spades.

Some may argue close games are a byproduct of T20 cricket, but the variety of conditions in WI/USA and particularly the bowler friendly pitches reduces the gulf between teams.

The expansion to 20 teams has been welcome too after years of ICC's closed shop policy. Yes PNG, Uganda, Oman etc looked out of their depth but we've had the rise of USA, Scotland putting in a creditable showing, Nepal and Netherlands running teams close.

The New York/Florida leg was a fiasco though but you're hard pressed to find any major tournament without some logistical issues. Overall I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

That is still possible without rain playing spoilsport. This would have been a fantastic World Cup in my opinion if rain didn’t play a part.

Taking it as a cue ,icc here after in tournaments should arrange qualifier matches in bowling pitches only.so that it will reduce the gap and entertainment won't be spoiled.

Any cup which has dodgy pitches where 110/115 is a winning score no drainage systems. Leading wicket taker run maker from a minnow nation & SA not choking should not be taken seriously!!

modern batters are used to playing on flat surfaces. bowling friendly surfaces have narrowed the gap between strong and weak teams.

Cons:
1. Poor crowds
2. Cringey pandering to Americans
3. Rains
4. New Yok pitch, was it even in New York ???
5. What time does the match start bhai??
6. Uganda batting, games looked like club matches (Didnt even cross 80 in any of the 4 games)

Pros:
1. Several close games
2. Perceptions of associates rising, ( Associates cant bat, poor pitches make associates make them look better than they actually are)
3. AUSTRALIA out before Semis

Overall, meh World Cup honestly. I have enjoyed it but still ...

It's been a very good t20 world cup.

The format of net run rate is a bit cruel in such a small group. Net run rate is very good for larger groups but in a 4-5 team group where conditions across games can vary it's a bit harsh to be the only mechanism for elimination.

However I can't really think of a better option at the moment either and tbf despite the many permutations only second have been affected.

South Africa won CT 1998. Also, I think they are bound to win a few World Cups at some point.

No one really counts that trophy seriously. It was just winning 3 games.
The common perception was that it was an exhibition tournament to promote cricket in Bangladesh.

That was a CT. An ICC trophy.

Whether you want to count or not, that's your matter. It is recognized by ICC.

Same with CT 2000 (the one won by New Zealand).

By the way, I saw CT 1998 live. It was a lively knockout tournament.

I know , not disputing that. Not denying their win by any means.
But Somehow SA still had the choker Tag, failing in ICC tag hung around their neck because people tend to forget it.
Same case for NZ, we literally end up thinking NZ has also not won an ICC trophy.
These early 2 ICC knock outs were held in associate locations as kind of exhibition to promote cricket in Bangladesh and Kenya. Teams didnt consider them seriously enough.
Only later, ICC changed it to Champions trophy format and shifted back to main countries as hosts.

It was called "Mini World Cup" back then. It was a bit like 1930 FIFA World Cup (kind of lackluster but gets counted officially).

Definitely the best. The contest between bat and ball has been riveting to say the least. Hope ICC learns from this and more so BCCI which rolled out absolute roads for IPL where bowlers were reduced to mere spectators and less said about the foolish impact player rule the better.

Not denying the official tag, but in our conversations we forget that. India SL joint win of 2002 also has a meh memory.
CT was about to be cancelled after 2013 edition but India won it and suddenly BCCI revived it and unknowingly helped Pakistan with the memorable 2017. :P

This World Cup has been a very good one. All T20 World Cups should adopt this format. Both associate and full Test nations had an equal opportunity to proceed to the next rounds. I know many people believe it’s unfair that one upset can eliminate a team, but World Cups are supposed to be like that. One poor match or upset in the FIFA World Cup can also put a stronger team on the brink of elimination. Every match should be significant in World Cups.

Apart from associate or lower-ranked teams making it to the next round, the other best aspect which is crucial for a successful competition is having close matches. We had plenty of close matches throughout the tournament. In so many games, we didn’t know who would come out on top.

The USA leg promised much but delivered less. The ICC didn’t plan it well, and the execution was even worse. Otherwise, we could have seen some great matches in New York. I hope future events are better planned.

The crowd turnout has been disappointing. New York had better crowds than the Caribbean. In the Caribbean, people were only interested in watching West Indies matches against stronger teams. The stands were empty even when the West Indies played against weaker teams.

Lastly, as a Pakistan cricket fan I am of course gutted that our team didn’t make it to the next round. However, there were so many issues with the team and team selection that even if they had made it through, I don’t believe they would have proceeded to the semifinals.

Wonky pitches that don't change nature during the game, bad schedules, unpredictable weather all make for a better contest. The best 8 teams made it to the quarters and the best 4 make it to the semis. This is a good world cup but may not be the best. The best part about this world cup is Afghanistan and the spirit they have shown throughout the tournament. I hope they win. If they do this it will be a water shed moment for Afghani cricket and the nation as a whole. Being an Indian our win can wait for another time.

For me this one is best worldcup. No boring run fest...low scoring affairs...all games nail biting finish...thriller......and Afghanistan made this wc more sweet

The number of teams and tournament format definitely made this World Cup very entertaining indeed

So far? Maybe, it'll ultimately depend on the KO games.

Having upsets/close encounters in group fixtures matter little if the big games are awful. Remember a thread for the ODI WC recently but then the final was awfully one sided and doubt anyone would call it great anymore.

This has been a superb worldcup. Even most minnow games bar 1 or 2 have been competitive and nail biting.

Ya it gave a peculiar situation to australian fans , they were worried whenever bangladeshi batsman hit boundaries and again horrified whenever they lost wickets..

That is still possible without rain playing spoilsport. This would have been a fantastic World Cup in my opinion if rain didn’t play a part.
Fair enough!
However rain is not in anyone’s control. Would you prefer this World Cup over flat roads and batting shoot outs in other countries?

Obviously if semis get wages out and india south Africa reach finals then it will be shame and make World Cup questionable

Very good World Cup in terms of the competition but poor in terms of timing for people in Australia. The games either start at 12 AM in the night or when people are at work. Don't think the viewership would have been much here but again subcontinent is the TV audience ICC cares about, so it has been good in that sense.

Only care about Pakistan and didn't bother with it once they got papped out. From that perspective, its been an absolute stinker.

No Pakistan, No Party!

Apart from Rain spoiling the party for teams, this tournament is not that bad. There were low-scoring matches in the USA but they were thrillers.

Some teams also got reality checks that you cannot take any opposing team for granted.

Not the best tournament but certainly not the worst one.

Definitely Yes 👍🏻..
Slow pitches and surprising results made this world cup very interesting.

USA's dream run, inspiring performance by Afghanistan, South Africa's thriller campaign, elimination of big teams, dominance of bowlers, some huge upsets, low scores, tricky pitches, this world cup is already very memorable.

New Champions (Afghanistan or South Africa) will guaranteed make this world cup the best of all time.

Timing is a major issue, it’s catered to sun continent audience. Main matches are morning time for US/West indies so crowd is little and for Aussies it starts at 12:30 at night.

I see no one complaint about the pitches here. Suddenly people found out that the pitches are terrible. How shocking!

Afghanistan had a dream run until the semi final. They will learn from this.

USA has proved they are more than an associate team. Problem is, it is still only expats playing the game. Not sure how long this can sustain.

Pitch today was disgraceful. A World Cup semi-final should have a better pitch.

Enjoyed group stage and Super 8. Semi has been a letdown so far.

Logistical nightmare for fans from what i read. Many landed but still could not watch the match. Crowd was poor. No real atmosphere. It looked like sunday tennis ball leagues today. Ground is poor, pitch is poor. There is no roar from the crowd which i still remember from 2007 world cup in SA. They need to upgrade their infrastructure massively. Hope they use the money the get out of this to good use. These stadiums are outdated. West Indians are cricket lovers. But i suspect it has gone down significantly.

Afghanistan played poor shots. Nothing to do with pitch but yeah, nobody wants to see 1 sided games in kncokouts.

The big games have to deliver to make it a memorable WC.

Couple of terribly one sided knockout fixtures, along with rain boring the hell out of everyone in this one. Need something special in the final

One of the worst World Cup’s ever, I hope the ICC official who took a bung to hold part of it in America is enjoying his money! The Americans didn’t care about the World Cup before and they won’t after!
