Hashim Amla retires from all forms of cricket

Kallis has 11K odi runs, at an average of 45 in his era. Lol, it is not about one inning at all. In Amla's era, he most definitely would have 52-53 average at Strike Rate about 85.

Kallis had bigger longevity than Amla in ODIs which means he survived longer, better performances in World Cup and ICC tournaments and just like Amla, a prolific run-scorer.

Both Kallis and Amla struggled in terms of inability to change gears. But as a batsmen, Kallis takes the cake without any doubt.

AB
Klusenar
Kallis

That's top 3 IMO. Top 5 will have Gibbs and Amla closing up.

Saying Kallis would have averaged 50+ at a SR of 90 is simply a fantasy. We will never know for certain and therefore such comparisons are meaningless. It is better to see what each batsman did in his own era and how they fared in comparison with their contemporaries. Not sure about Kallis but Amla enjoyed a long reign as the number #1 ODI batsman in the world before a combination of his main rivals finding some insane form and his own decline made him drop out of the race. Not sure that Kallis was ever considered one of the best ODI batsmen in the world, let alone the best. Nor did he ever average 60 in ODIs or break any records in the format. Additionally, he has far fewer centuries in the format.

It's strange that you're talking about longevity and number of runs and then placing Klusenar above every other South African batsman not named de Villiers.

Problem is that amla not only choked in semis and finals but also in league matches of world cup. He doesn't even have a single good innings in world cup. Now this is really embarrassing for a great batsmen like him.
He was a clutch test player and it is really odd that he wasn't able to survive in odis(in wc). Even in bilaterals he scored a lot of soft runs.

I"ll put him above kallis but he isn't better than klusener, not at all.

150+ against Ireland in 2015 and a 60-70 odd against the eventual world champions in 2011 were most definitely good innings. Everyone knows that he underperformed in WCs but so did many other great players. Klusenar simply cannot be compared to specialist batsmen with the amount of runs he had, regardless of his world cup heroics. In around the same number of matches, Amla scored around 5000 more runs. If we start using world cups as the sole criteria in ODIs, Smith would be rated as a better ODI player than Kohli.

Surrey have signed former South Africa batsman Hashim Amla on a two-year Kolpak contract.

The 36-year-old retired from international cricket in August as the Proteas' second-highest Test run scorer with 9,282 runs in 124 matches.

Amla is the only South Africa batsman to score a Test triple hundred - 311 not out against England in 2012.

He was Test captain between 2014 and 2016, scoring 28 centuries and averaging 46.64.

"Surrey are one of the most established and accomplished cricket clubs in the world and I am very excited to be joining them again," he told the Surrey website.

"I was part of the Surrey team in 2013 and 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed myself during those stints, so to rekindle that relationship for a longer period is something that excites me. I'm really looking forward to working with Alec Stewart and the rest of his team."

Amla joins former South Africa team-mate Morne Morkel at 2018 County Championship winners Surrey, who had been looking for an experienced batsman with Ollie Pope and Rory Burns likely to be away on England duty for extended periods of next season.

As well as his two previous spells with Surrey, he has also played for Essex, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Hampshire.

In total, Amla scored more than 18,000 runs across all formats for South Africa with 55 centuries in 349 matches and has been ranked as the number one batsman in both Test and one-day international cricket.

He scored 27 one-day international centuries, the most by a South Africa batsman, and scored 8,113 runs at an average of 49.46 in the format.

"With several of our players now in or around the international setup, the opportunity to bring Hashim back to Surrey was too good to ignore," said Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart.

"His record speaks for itself and we know from his previous spells here that he will be an excellent resource for all of our players to learn from both on and off the field."

Amla's career in numbers
Tests: 124, 9282 runs, average 46.64, 28 hundreds, highest score 311*
ODIs: 181, 8113 runs, average 49.46, strike-rate 88.39, 27 hundreds, highest score 181
T20Is: 44, 1277 runs, average 33.60, striker-rate 132.05, highest score 97*

Bess is club level.

Amla still going strong, could walk back into the SA side

Legendary South African batter Hashim Amla has declared he is to retire from all forms of cricket.

Amla, 39, signed for Surrey in 2019 and was an integral part of the side that won the LV= Insurance County Championship in 2022.

Amla, who also represented Surrey as an overseas player in 2013 and 2014, retired from international cricket in August 2019 having amassed 18,672 runs across all three formats for the Proteas after his debut in 2004.

The 39-year-old hit 9,282 runs and 28 hundreds in 124 Test matches, as well as 8,113 runs and 27 hundreds in 181 One-Day Internationals and 1,277 runs in 44 T20Is.

Amla became South Africa’s first triple-centurion during Day 4 of the Test Match between England and South Africa at The Kia Oval on July 22, 2012.

Since signing for Surrey in 2019, Amla has brought his invaluable experience to the Club and helped support Captain Rory Burns as part of the leadership group within the dressing room.

His skill, resilience and dogged determination with the bat was typified by an innings of 37 runs from 278 balls at the Ageas Bowl against Hampshire in 2021.

That defiant rearguard earnt Surrey an unlikely draw in the County Championship and was indicative of Amla’s commitment to doing what was necessary for the team at any given moment.

Hashim Amla said: “I have great memories of the Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been.

“A sincere thank you to Alec Stewart and the entire Surrey staff, players and Members for their support. The Surrey ship runs so professionally that it would make any international player feel a sense of honour just to be involved with.

“I wish them all the best and many more trophies.”

Alec Stewart, who has worked with Amla throughout his various spells in the Surrey side, described the South African as a “true professional and a great of the game”.

Stewart said: “Everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club will be sad to see Hashim retire, but we all applaud what has been a phenomenal career. He will quite rightly go down as a great of the game.

“Hashim is a fantastic cricketer and a wonderful person. He has been an incredible resource for the team to learn from on and off the field.

“As well as posting big scores at vital moments, he has also shown his willingness to dig in and do what is needed to get his team a result in tough games. I can’t thank him enough for what he has done for Surrey and hold him up as an example to all young players of what a true professional looks like.

“Everyone at Surrey wishes him the best in the future, and I am sure all our Members and supporters would like to thank him for his time here and congratulate him on such a decorated career.”

He is coaching in the SA league?

Why don’t Pakistan contact him?

Good idea but how successful will he be as a coach? There will too much Bhai Bhai and he will become another Saqlain - the best we can do is to have him as a batting coach

Saqlain never played cricket past 2004 so he was out of touch with the modern game. The most he could have offered was a decent spin bowling consultant

Amla knows the game so well. He played in the legendary SA side with AB, Smith, Kallis, Steyn, Morkel, Duminy, Gibbs as well. He knows modern cricket and he knows proper Test cricket too.

Might just be the perfect guy for this lot, they will respond well to him.

I think we need a hard task master and Amla is too soft in that sense!

Shiv Chanderpaul was a WI young prodigy when i started watching cricket. Now his son is entering his peak years. I am OLD, damn

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has paid tribute to one of the greatest batters to grace the country, Hashim Amla, following his retirement from the sport on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old played the last of his 349 matches across all three formats for the Proteas in 2019 when he stepped away from the international game. However, he continued to play domestically and most recently turned out for Surrey, who he helped win the English County Championship.

Amla made more than 18 000 runs for South Africa, including 55 centuries during an international career that spanned 15 years. At the time of retirement, he was the only Protea to have scored a triple century in Test cricket – an innings of 311 not out against England at The Oval in mid-2012 and a record that he still holds.

The Durban-born player, who also captained the South Africa team briefly, is second behind Jacques Kallis in terms of Test runs for the country (9,282) and 15th on the overall list.

“Hashim Amla will go down as one of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game,” CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki said. “His numbers are amongst the best and he was a class apart, entertaining people all over the world with that exquisite cover drive.

“Hashim was an absolute legend. His story is one that inspires and will continue to inspire many. Not only was he an outstanding cricketer, but he is also an incredible and humble human being, who touched the heart of everyone he met. We at CSA would like to wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Tests. Great player.

ODIS. Only good in bilaterals. Went missing whenever there was an ICC event.

Very humble guy. That is what i remember most about him. One of the few players who still managed to retain his subcontinent flavor. ABDV's best partner in crime.

A great player who improved himself massively a lesson for Pakistan players, but a certified choker went missing in all crucial games for Proteas

Will South Africa ever produce a Test batsman as good as peak Amla? Let alone Kallis, Smith, AB etc. That was some era for RSA cricket. Their Test batting lineup is near minnow level now.

Amla will feature in SA all time test XI for me.

Or purely based on international cricket,

Amla has an average of 62 odd and 4 hundreds in India, absolutely brutalised the tiny folk

Nothing but respect for this man. He did not take the world by storm when he debuted. Looked extremely mediocre but just in a couple of years I simply could not believe my eyes what he had turned into as a batter. All class and technique. You don’t pull off such a surreal transformation if you don’t put in countless hours.

A great role model as well for his humble demeanour. Had a very respectable SR even when he was not hitting the ball in the air.

Amla was a gentleman who playing cricket in the right spirit. He never had to sledge or get involved in any drama (be it on-field or off-field). He was also a very good performer.

A fine ambassador for cricket and also Islam.

Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Amla.

Happy 41st birthday to the South African run-machine.

He still holds the records for the fastest 3000, 4000, 6000, and 7000 runs in ODI history!

Very good player in the same category as Moyo, Inzamam, Mahela, Laxman, Hussey, Martyn, Chanderpaul, Younis, Clarke etc. etc.

A great for his country but not any ATG by any measure.
He is in different category than Laxman and Hussey

Problem is that amla not only choked in semis and finals but also in league matches of world cup. He doesn't even have a single good innings in world cup. Now this is really embarrassing for a great batsmen like him.
He was a clutch test player and it is really odd that he wasn't able to survive in odis(in wc). Even in bilaterals he scored a lot of soft runs.

I"ll put him above kallis but he isn't better than klusener, not at all.
World cup is overrated.Ronaldo has better performance than Messi in Champions League knock out.And Pele didn't even played any

Tell that your Pakistani countrymen who can’t think beyond ICC tournaments.

Unless its a rebirth with a different logic now.
