As long as the phone is compatible with their network than all you have to do is buy the SIM, choose your plan and away you go. The providers don't force you to buy phones from them as mentioned by the above poster, they would like you to sign a 2/3 year term but since you are buying the phone there is no need for you to sign a contract.
Likes of Rogers, Bell etc (barring Wind) will not just give you Blackberry SIM with a BlackBerry plan, for that you have to buy a phone set along and sign a term.

now my relatives are after me to get nikaofied to a girl asap and they are bombarding me with stories of so many relatives they know who out of the blue unexpectedly married foreigners and have been disowned by parents. Plus they are also trying to convince me that if i am going to be here in the long run, then i have to plan for things for e.g. if i marry a girl in Pakistan but am living and working in Canada, it now takes 2-3 years minimum for her to land here as compared to years ago when it took a few months. They gave me an example in one case where a Canadian national left his job at TD, left Canada to go back to Pakistan because his in laws put pressure on him to be with his wife. Hence their logic is if i get the Nikkah document in asap then the whole thing can be planned properly and a lot of problems can be avoided in the future.
