Likes of Rogers, Bell etc (barring Wind) will not just give you Blackberry SIM with a BlackBerry plan, for that you have to buy a phone set along and sign a term.

I don't know about Blackberry's but I have always bought my own phones and never had any issues enrolling in a plan with either of those providers.

If that is the case with Blackberry than I wouldn't waste my money buying it in Pakistan.

Purchased a brand new BB Curve 9360. Cost me 26k in cash. Sold the BB Bold 9000 for 6k without the box. Paid via funds transfer, declined to pay via debit card after being told that the bank would charge me Rs 600 extra. Since the BB Bold i got was given to me for free by my dad (second hand), i think it was a pretty decent deal.
 
Ok guys just received an email from Wilfrid Laurier University. They have offered me admission and have sent a formal offer letter of admission is on the way via mail. I tried to register for the courses i wanted to take specifically but the online registration system is not letting me do that and says i am not meeting the prerequisites. This is really frustrating but apart from sending them emails with queries regarding how to resolve this i cant do much from Pakistan.

Am still waiting to hear from York University, they have received my documents, acknowledged it but taking there time to process things and deliberate whether to offer me admission or not. My first choice would be York as it is in Toronto and allows me to be with family over there.

Now i heard applying for a student visa takes a good 3 months, plus i have to give a fresh medical exam again. If i fail to reach these universities by Jan 2012 then it means i wont be elligible to join them till September 2012 which means a waste of 8 months. Our immigration process is in the final stages and they could ask for our passports anytime, they could ask for it tommorow and return it within with a week or 2 with the visas or they could take another 3-4 months before they ask us for our passports.

All in all a pretty uncertain confusing situation where nothing is really in my hands at the moment.
 
Got admitted into York, just logged into their website today and saw my profile. Awaiting an official offer letter of admission from them now.
 
When was the last time you heard from Canadian Immigration people on your immigration? It takes up to six months after they last contact you.

What about University of Toronto?

Our medicals took place at the end of July so we are expecting that too come through by the end of Jan, another month will go in the visa acceptance time so il prob be in Canada in March or April 2012.

I am exploring at the prospect of asking the Universities to defer me to the May 2012 Semmester. I couldnt apply to Waterloo as an international student, i was only interested in their continuing education program but they werent offering the courses i wanted and they themselves advised me to try for York/Ryerson/WLU etc.

Even the ICAO recommened York would be a better option for me.

International for now. I applied as an international student, i felt doing that would increase my chances of getting admission as international students pay more compared to locals and these universities are business minded

Alright guys, i have never faced a situation where i had to decide between 2 equally good universities, its a much easier decision when deciding bw one top university and the remaining lowly ranked ones. I have deffered my admissions to both Wilfird Laurier and York.

Now i have to decide which University to go to. One of my preferences will obviously be which university creates less headaches for me when it comes to taking the courses i want to take and creating no unnecessary hassles as far as prerequisites are concerned. The thing which pulls me to York apart from its good reputation is the fact it is in Toronto where my family is based and i am closer to family.

WLU is also a good school too but if i go there i will have to stay in a dorm which could be costly. My dad has been interacting with plenty of Canadian residents and he's getting feedback that WLU is a better choice than York. Based on the reviews i have read in a magazine both universities are evenly matched.

Maybe PP'rs who are studying in Canada, or working, or even those who have studied in both the places can give me a better insight on this. I have practically a few months before i finally make this decision.
 
York is actually quite good. I know a few people who went there. :)

I applied to York for September 2012. They are awfully slow at this thing which is not so good. :/ But that probably means they have a lot of applicants :)
 
I go to Wilfrid Laurier (Brantford campus) and I like it.

Less crowd.

Very easy to talk with professors. Class size is small compared to other universities. Nice environment.

York and WLU are both good schools. As you said, York is located in Toronto so easy access to university. WLU will be far from Toronto so it will be more expensive than York.
 
We have received Immigration Visa Approval. Huge source of tension and uncertainty which was with us and me especially has been removed now. Everything else is now just a mere formality. Should receive our landing papers in a months time. Will resign from work on Monday.
 
Ok guys, i have a few butterflies in the tummy and yes am feeling pretty anxious. I was pretty excited about leaving Pakistan to study, work in the West and to live there for a good 5-6 years. That moment has finally come after a lot of hard work, endurance, frustration and patience.

But having said that, i do indeed feel nervous given that i have lived all my life in Pakistan where we are lucky to have servants for cooking, driving, mowing the lawn, ironing, washing, arranging the clothes, beds etc. Now for the first time in my life after being so dependent, protected by my parents, am going to be living alone in a new country with different people.

Actually need some tips from Desi students who have lived in dorms in US/Canadian colleges. What do you guys do for food? I actually need to learn cooking in the month and a half i have left at home. Any tips/suggestions for college life? What items should i bring for home? What cooking stuff should i buy for my dorm room?

It's not hard to cook with these masalas. Also when you have no choice but to cook for yourself then you just do it, and you seem to enjoy it too.

If not then there are always restaurants or some aunties that you can buy food from, stock up for week or two week.

And congrats on getting the immigration. You're lucky, it's very hard to get it these days.

Good so far, the weather will take adjusting to coming from the heat of Karachi to the chilly weather of Canada. My college starts on May 7th so i am busy studying for my CFA exam in June. Got my SIN no, applied for my health card and passed my written G1 licence test.

Now just have to go to York in 1-2 days to get my university card. Am actually looking to apply for a part time job in the financial sector companies be it banks, asset management firms, capital market firms etc as i will only be going to uni for 2 days a week so feel uncomfortable doing nothing during the free time i have. Does any one have any suggestions? Which firms should i apply too in particular? Any website which will give me a comprehensive idea? Otherwise i will also look into trying out for the teaching assistant positions at York.

But no doubt, coming to Canada feels really good, i really needed some new exposure, a change plus it feels good to be away from people, things or an environment which just gives you bad memories and nothing else.

Plus they are also trying to convince me that if i am going to be here in the long run, then i have to plan for things for e.g. if i marry a girl in Pakistan but am living and working in Canada, it now takes 2-3 years minimum for her to land here as compared to years ago when it took a few months. They gave me an example in one case where a Canadian national left his job at TD, left Canada to go back to Pakistan because his in laws put pressure on him to be with his wife. Hence their logic is if i get the Nikkah document in asap then the whole thing can be planned properly and a lot of problems can be avoided in the future.

welcome to toronto. weather is very pleasant. this winter was really mild. and now its getting even better. summer and falls are really beautiful in canada. which area you are located in toronto
 
Don't make just for the sake of nationality. All you are going to attract is families interested in wanting to move abroad and not really care anything about you. I have heard of stories of how Canadians are engaged to a native back home Pakistani (because parents told them too), only for that native to have a bf/gf and are just looking for immigration (and then look to divorce once landed).
 
By the way guys is it easy or possible to purchase Ritalin or Modafinil at any local pharmacy without prescription over here? Il be temporarily staying in Toronto Downtown for now.
 
Ok guys i have heard about 2 places from downtown closeby where one can easily get halal meat and desi groceries, items. One is at Gerrard Street a place which is called Indian Bazaar and the other is Iqbal Foods (more famous one) which is at Thorncliffe Park.

Does anyone know the closest subway to that place. Which TTC bus does one have to take? Any famous shisha spots? Closest subways.

I have learnt how to use the subway and the go transit but still clueless about street cars, buses. Have gotten my student card from York and from TTC and have attended my orientation. Classes will start from May 8th onwards and if everything goes to plan il be spending atleast 4 semmesters at York in which i should inshallah complete the 11 courses i need with good marks, may even consider taking french classes and in the end receive a certificate.

Would like to focus strongly on extra ciricular activites, being involved a lot at university. Thats the feedback i received from local CA's that is the criteria that big 4 major accounting firms focus on. Good grades, strong extra ciricular activities, demonstration of leadership skills. Given that i am from outside Canada, i need to prove that i have acclimatized, adjusted and need Canadian Work Experience for that.

Would like feedback from people living in Canada especially Toronto. Should i focus on trying to get an off campus part time job or something on campus like becoming a teaching assistant or working for a university department?

I feel the advantages of getting something at university would be that it would perhaps be easier for me to take part in extra curricular activities. I have to take at least 3-4 courses every semester so i would prefer not to travel outside the university that much given that i am going to be staying in downtown.
 
You take bus # 22 from Coxwell for Gerrard (if you live along College Street you can also just take the eastbound Main Street streetcar).

For Thorncliffe, take bus # 81 from Pape station.

I would say Thornhill is better for desi groceries whereas Gerrard is more for hanging out and eating desi food during weekends (it is quite lively during weekends and during Eid it goes crazy!).

Google maps is my best friend for commuting in Toronto. Just put your starting and ending direction and choose the 'bus' option and it'll show you the whole path with all the buses, etc (and alternative routes).

Unless you have a lot of financial security from family back home I would first just get any sort of part time job I can. After you start to get some sort of income focus on jobs like TA.

Just a tip for ttc in Toronto - you don't have to pay when switching buses that are perpendicular in paths (ex. if you pay for a bus going north and you need to go east you don't have to pay again). Just get a transfer from the bus driver when you're paying your ticket (if you're new to commuting on ttc get a transfer even if you don't need it just in case). Getting into the subway from ttc bus is also always free. You can also get a transfer from the subway (it's a red machine, pretty noticeable) for switching buses later on (ex. if you take a ttc bus east from the subway and need to transfer south at some point you can use the subway transfer).

A good resource is http://www.zabihah.com/c/Downtown-Toronto+285/?t=g. It has the addresses of places and you can check them out. Some iranian places are a bit dodgy, but most are okay.

An on campus jobs is almost always better than an off campus job(unless the off campus job is well paying), but any job is better than no job :)

One thing I would recommend is to look for a job either close to York, or close to where you live. If your place of work is far from both York and your home, you will end up losing a lot of time due to commuting. People say that they can study on subways/buses, but its no replacement for studying in a quiet, still environment.
 
So far so good, still too early to tell how this Canadian experience is but one thing i do not like is this ultra cold chilly weather. No way in hell can i wear a T shirt out in public if its going to be this cold 24/7.

I was there last November, had jetlag and was on the streets the next day with no idea about the Go transit, the subway, the buses, the streets. Made so many blunders that day, still succeeded in doing what i needed to do.
 
^ Good for you. You know I think not having someone hold your hand and having to figure out things yourself is better in the long run.

Alright guys any good, famous shisha spots in Downtown. I heard of one Al-Bashi but i thought i would ask people around here.
 
I have actually been shocked and bewildered. Turns out that York didn't even give me credit for the courses that the ICAO gave me credit for. I mean i have done like 6 economic courses at IBA during my 6 years there, i have covered the same topics York is offering, even compared the course outlines and still the university told me "You haven't met our requirements". Funny enough the uni gave me credit for one course the ICAO didn't give me credit for. So i contacted the ICAO and they were like "Well if we have given you credit for courses but the uni hasn't then you have no choice but to do it to satisfy their requirements". Similarly "If they have given you credit for a course we didn't give you credit for, well it doesn't matter, you still have to do it to meet our requirements".

So bottom line this means an extra 5-6 courses than i originally planned in the certificate of accountancy program. Lets see worse come to worse an extra semester then. This has disrupted my planned schedule of courses significantly and its even more tricky because most of my courses are prerequisites of one another so i have to take them strategically. Anyways now it turns out that i will have to on average take 4 courses per semester and in one semmester even 5. It took me atleast 2 days to get over this dissapointment, was fuming with rage inside at what i felt was a clear money grab episode and nothing else.

On the bright side maybe going to Uni for more classes will give me more interaction opportunities and will allow me to make more friends. I have actually taken some feedback from some senior CA's over here in firms and they have advised me that i need to work hard, play hard and party hard at the same time. I.e. "Don't just go to uni and study only, you need to do extra curricular activities, demonstrate leadership skills". "But make sure the extra curricular activities don't disrupt your grades"

Also they mentioned since i was new to Canada it was imperative that i prove by the time i give an article ship interview that i have acclimatized to Canada and it was important for me to get Canadian Work experience. It takes me 60-90 minutes from my place to Uni. That just means leaving 2 hours earlier, it can be tiring commuting on the TTC, sitting on buses especially if its overcrowded but its better than wasting $700-$1000 a month on campus accommodation.

I think my best option is to get a part time job on campus eventually. I am going to be taking 4 tough courses per semester and of course i need to do extra curricular activities too. So if i can be on campus 24/7 then great.

Does someone know of good extra curricular options one can be involved in? Is an on campus job compared to an off campus job a good idea?

actually this year was not that bad. you may see what is really canadian cold next year. just wait for nov. keep this simple rule. wear layers. that way you keep your body heat trap inside.
 
Alright guys i wanted to ask a few people is it feasible to do an off campus part time job when you are taking 3-4 post graduate courses in a semmester? How about an on campus job like working in the library? Which types of jobs best allows you to study at the same time as well?

The second thing i wanted to ask is anyone aware of a good driving school/teacher in Toronto? I have my G1 licence, i now need to give the tests for G2 and get the whole process over with because i wont have time later. How long does it take in terms of practice, classes to clear the G2 test?

Will be most greatful for advice.

I repeat my question, need help from PPers who have given the G2 driving test before. Are there any driving schools/instructors you would recommend for preparing for the G2 driving test? Is 3 weeks enough time to prepare and give the road test? How much should it cost overall from lessons, classes to the actual test date?
 
3 weeks should be enough if you know how to drive previously. Im this case, you are just learning the intricacies of driving on Canadian roads and the small lil things you should take do go pass the test. You should be be able to get a 'package' which includes 10 hours of training, plus they let you take their car for test day for about $250-300.

They ask about 2-3 kinds of Parking. And drive you around for 10-15 minutes. If test is taken in proper Toronto, it's a bit harder. But since you have driven for 8 years, you shouldn't be worried about the confidence and command on car.

I do recommend you to search for driving school close to your living place. With your driving experience you will require less number of lessons, I hope. But I strongly recommend to have at least 3-4 lessons minimum, so you get an idea of how test is usually taken.

Last time I gave a test for G was 2 years ago I think, they charged me around $ 25 per lesson. It might be different at the moment. As RWAC mentioned, look for the package, because I think it also includes G2's fee, which I think is around $ 100+.

Canadian Tire just opened their driving school. Give them a try.

If you have been driving for 8 years, you don't need a lot of lessons. My dad took 4 lessons and
got his G2. All you need is a few lessons for specific things they look for that we might not use all the time in everyday driving - checking over your shoulder, the exact procedure for making a turn. That's the small lil things that make or break the test for G2 drivers.

I first got my G1 back in March 2008. Went to Pakistan in summer of 2008 and learned to drive in Pakistan. Passed my G2 in March 2009 without a single driving lesson. Passed my G in August 2010 without a single lesson again. If I can pass without any training - sure you can too with 8 years of experience.

Don't worry, do the basics and you will be fine.

But you must have practiced with someone in Toronto I guess.

That's great.

I have G licence with the least amount of driving experience in my house. If I have to drive a car at the moment, I might have to practice on normal streets before I will be able to drive on the high ways. :))

Feel kind of guilty.
 
Btw. as an international student means it must be very expensive!! They literally loot international students. Every single universities. Just an advice from a stranger, don't drift away. Get your degree and make it worth.

I never once encountered it in Pakistan but over here in Canada there are so many of them out there, i got approached by one guy on Linkedln a Pakistani and i actually bought into his pitch of "you can make a part time income of $2000 plus a month and later more than that for 10-15 hours a week max", thank goodness my involvement with this thing lasted only 2 months with no financial losses and that my grades didnt suffer in college and that i still have a part time job which pays decently.

Its really scary the level of mind control, cult like techniques these organizations and their recruiters use to take advantage of gullible people. I am still shaken as to how could i let my guard down so badly and got so close to someone when in the end i was just a source of money, exploitation for him. Its gonna take me a while to trust people again.
 
Was good to come back home for my winter break for 2 weeks. Another week and il be back in Toronto. Have to carry 360 anti depressant pills for a family member of mine in Toronto because they are much cheaper in Pakistan compared to buying them in Canada. I wanted to ask Canadian PPrs whether this could be a problem when landing and getting through customs at Pearsons?

What company was he referring to?
 
^ It's a pretty well known scam. Always do your research before becoming involved in things like that. And, a general rule of thumb: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I think, surviving in Pakistan's 50 C (122 F) heat is much tougher than surviving in -12 C (10 F) .... in Toronto....specially for the people who do not have ACs!

One of my friend lives in Huntsville, Canada which is 2 hour drive from Toronto...... and he told me this morning that temps there right now is;

Completely agree with you.
I would rather live in such frigid temperatures than those 50C of UAE/Pakistan.

Btw, we had -29 last week in Calgary, followed by +15 on Thursday.:-)
 
I went back to Pak for 2 weeks in my winter break. Was in Lahore for a day and i can tell it was extremely tough, the cold weather there couple with the hourly gas/electricity loadshedding. God bless the internal central heating systems of Canadian buildings.

I have stocked up on a lot of warm clothes, have gloves and snow shoes. Its a real pain dressing up going outside because it takes me 20 minutes to wear clothes. Second it takes a lot longer to walk, you have to walk carefully and slowly in snow because its easy to slip. I am thinking of buying some additional snow shoes, something which will prevent me from slipping. I have purchased a pair of gloves which will help me use my smart phone while outside without having to take my gloves off.

Btw do Toronto/Canadian based PPer's meet up with each others on and off, frequently?

We can surely start something soon. I travel to Toronto every month to see my family anyways.
 
Giving my G test in a weeks time. Struggled really hard to get used to driving in Canada and cleared my G2 test on my 4th attempt. Failed all my previous attempts due to careless nervous mistakes. Driving on the highway needs improving.

If you can pass G2, then G test is piece of cake. G2 is hardest test in Canada. G highway is all about highway with some exceptions. Have fun with speed.You will be fine, Insha Allah. If i can pass G highway with easily, so can you. Just relax and enjoy because you have to enjoy driving when you are in highway. ;)

Word of advice on the highway when the instructor asks you change lane absolutely make sure you don't impede another vehicles speed when changing lanes. Either slow down to a reasonable speed and let car beside you pass or speed up to a reasonable distance and than change lanes. The number one thing they look for is defensive driving, so be as vigilant as possible and drive like your father in law is sitting beside you for the first time, be on your best behavior. BTW which location is your test from, Downsview?
