Hindu pilgrims killed in militant attack in Kashmir

I remember someone comparing these cowards with Bhagat Singh and co.
True freedom fighters indeed.

Out of 7 five were women, extremely disturbing a lot of injured guys are critical.

RIP. Civilians should never be targeted no matter what. Who ever did it is a terrorist.

Not surprising considering their is systematic genocide being attempted in the valley. Justice will prevail.

RIP.

The only one who can solve this mess is India, and they will make it worse.

RIP

It's a real shame civlians get caught up and suffer.

I read the attack was against the police initially and then civillians were caught in the crossfire?

Not surprising considering there is systematic genocide being attempted in the valley. Justice will prevail.

This. Very misleading headline, but then again it doesn't take much for Indians to add fuel to an already raging fire.

Sad.

RIP!

If Terrorists choose to attack pilgrims, then they found real easy targets. Thousands of people visit it every year. May be even Lakhs.

Six Hindu pilgrims, five of them women, have been killed in a militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir after their bus apparently got caught in crossfire.

The bus is understood to have been returning from the Amarnath Cave pilgrimage site when militants launched an attack in Anantnag district.

It is thought the target was vehicles at a counterinsurgency base.

The attack, which also left at least 12 wounded, could raise tensions.

Hardline Hindu groups linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party have long wanted to see tough action against the armed revolt against Indian rule in the Muslim-majority region.

Mr Modi tweeted: "Pained beyond words on the dastardly attack on the peaceful Amarnath Yatris (pilgrims) in Jammu and Kashmir.

"India will never get bogged down by such cowardly attacks and the evil designs of hate."

However, a police source told the BBC the attack did not appear to be aimed at the bus.

A coalition of Kashmiri separatists has condemned the attack, and no militant group has claimed it.

The attack comes after some hardline separatist leaders said they welcomed the pilgrims - about 100,000 of whom have already completed the journey - as their fight is not with ordinary Indians.

Another police source told the BBC the bus was not properly registered, and should have been off the road by the time of the attack, at 20:20 local time (14:50 GMT) on Monday.

Thank you. Crossfire. No targeting of Yatra Pilgrims. After 7pm there's a curfew in that region which would have further confused the issue.

RIP to the innocent people losing lives but frankly speaking, the Indian government should have seen this coming. I don't blame the "militants" (if you can call them that), I blame the Indian army and the Govt. You mistreat a certain group of the society, you ban basic necessities in the valley, you kill their people, you rape their women, you constantly annoy them, spread fear, close all businesses, universities and colleges, a rebellion is bound to rise. And believe you me, this is only the beginning and quite frankly, despite it being utterly sad, I don't blame the people doing this.

Thank you for justifying murder

How is that justifying murder? I've been highlighting the political opportunism by some here to suggest these innocent people were the target of terrorists. The Kashmiri insurgents are neither terrorists nor were they targeting these pilgrims. Only some Indians seem to know who they were murdered by before an investigation has even taken place. The rest of us acknowledge innocent loss of life without point-scoring.

According to the BBC, a police source said that the bus was not the target, it was simply caught in the cross-fire.

I am supporter of the Kashmiri right to self determination and the Ind armies brutality shows how little support they have but this murder of the innocent can never be justified.

Of course it can't. It's sickening they were killed like this and sicker yet to lay the blame at a voiceless entity for a bit of political point-scoring.

It's sad that 3rd world countries never let people to have self determination.
i.e. Bangadesh; Kashmir; Xingyang;Kurdistan; Balouchistan etc.

Canada allowed Quebec to have a referendum, and SC of Canada ensured that even if Quebec decides to be separated, Canada would not be able to take any actions that could adversely effect Quebec.

But these third world would happily kill thousand of their citizens, just to have little more land.

So many separatist movements going in India, what options do these freedom fighters got?

Wait for WW3, when new maps would be withdrawn??

Shame on India for enslaving their own people.

Apples and Oranges!

A lot of these so called freedom movements you hear in (non western countries) in your media are organized - either via internal politics or external interests (under the veil of spreading democracy, support for legitimate freedom struggle, support for minorities etc.) or a combination of both.

Shots were fired from the front.
Cross fire definitely .Some of you here make me sick.

You need to start reading the articles in full with a clear mind.

"The police claimed the bus driver had violated rules for the pilgrimage, which state that no yatra vehicle should be on a highway after 7 pm.'

This for me looks ominous. As if the police are trying to say "Sorry, we thought we were shooting Kashmiris".

If we make you sick over this, spare a moment to empathise with posters here who feel the same against Indian posters who support the killing of Kashmiris. Unlike you we value ALL life.

I've just told you this guy was not Kashmiri or Pakistani and the fact that LeT have distanced themselves from the attack. Do any of you guys read the articles? The presence of "LeT terrorists" is a smokescreen. There's just as much chance these pilgrims were killed by police forces than the militants.

If LeT were involved and killed these guys, bring down the fury on them. They deserve to be brought to justice and punished accordingly. Except there is no justice in that region only scapegoating.

I am quoting the BBC who are you quoting sources from the Indian security services.

Two things are certain;

1. Attacks by Muslims in western cities will always be claimed by Isis
2. Attacks by Muslims in India will always be blamed on Pakistan or "Pakistani militant groups"

Indian media is a PR service for its security forces so no surprises there.

Pretty much and its easy to see why they do it. After 9/11 there has been a big push towards Islamists worldwide, with their enemy being a Muslim and being inundated with Islamist groups it was a dream for them. Any attack in India could then be claimed as an Islamist attack backed by Pakistan. Had Pakistan been, say Buddhist, then maybe there would have been more reflection on themselves instead of blaming us 24/7.

Powerful groups prefer this narrative of "violent islamist ideology", India, Israel, UK and the US, to name the main culprits. It is in the interest of these nations to dehumanise Muslims in certain regions because their assets or goals happen to be in Muslim countries/territory. They formed a narrative and adhere to it as can be demonstrated by Keane's terrorism thread. I don't know how much part India played in forming this narrative but they are guilty of perpetuating it to suit their Kashmir agenda and to hide Modi's Hindutva ambitions.

It means they only have to use a few trigger words to divert the attention of their respective audiences

Nearly all the survivors praised the driver Salim Sheikh[ who did not stop the vehicle and got them to safety, only stopping near an army convoy 2km (1.24 miles) away. Many say that without him, the death toll would have been much higher.

Such things happen in an area which is under dispute (as per UN) and in recent times has been an active warzone

RIP

Another impartial source mentioning crossfire and not clear about who killed the pilgrims.

Also for those of you who don't know, the yatras engage in a religious pilgrimage annually in a part of the Kashmir Valley. Kashmiris welcome them because the pilgrims provide a boost to the suffering local economy. It makes sense to consider who benefits in such attacks upon any investigation. Many outside of this Indian media bubble know who is truly responsible and what is to be gained from such attacks.

Hope the Pilgrims and Kashmiri's stay strong

At the scene, Zubair Ahmed, BBC Hindi

Amid emotional scenes at the police line in Anantnag, many pilgrims who survived the attack say they are lucky to be alive.

The district hospital was full of injured survivors.
The owner of the bus, Harsh Desai, was among the injured.

"I saw five to six gunmen right in front of our bus. They were firing indiscriminately and throwing stones at our bus. I told the driver not to stop and just keep driving," he told the BBC.

Nearly all the survivors praised the driver, who did not stop the vehicle and got them to safety, only stopping near an army convoy 2km (1.24 miles) away. Many say that without him, the death toll would have been much higher.

An elderly woman said her sister who was sitting next to her and a man behind her both died in the attack, though she did not suffer any injuries.

What does that explain?

RIP. What a depressing chain of events. India and Pakistan could save a lot of heartache by coming to some sort of agreement on Kashmir to return it to some state of normal life.

Latest reports say that the terrorists surrounded the bus from three sides before opening fire. Some posters trying to prove that these terrorists were innocent of killing the pilgrims and it happened by mistake.

What about status quo?

Let there be peace and non interference in each others territory for 25 years.Let a new generation of Indians and Pakistanis who have not known this bloodshed come with a clean slate and decide?

Some other posters still shamelessly trying to play political chess with the victims as the pawns.

Pilgrims were the targets of the terrorists according to eyewitnesses and victims. Why is it so hard to understand ? If you have any conflicting reports from their side post it.

Neither india's arrogance would accept renouncing its sovereignty over kashmir nor pakistan would relent helping kashmiris in whatever way they can.atm there seem to be more chances of whole subcontinent turning into some landmass of nuclear waste than a peaceful resolution that respects the aspirations of kashmiris.

You've got one eyewitness account saying he saw gunmen in the dark and vast majority of others saying it was too dark to see anything and had no idea what was happening. If you see guns going off you try to take cover, you don't shine a torch to check whether they were militants or security forces unless security forces carry water balloons.

He saw gunmen, simple. This account hasn't been mentioned in other articles and didn't cause even a number of Indian newspapers to change their crossfire stance. Go check the articles, there's no attempt for militants to target pilgrims. There was only one previous incident involving pilgrims in 2001 and that was in retaliation to the babri mosque massacre. Kashmiris welcome pilgrims as can be seen on various videos online.

Get over your morbid desires to use this attack to justify attacks on Kashmiris. By the way, do you condemn the murder of Kashmiris or is it during such incidents that your interest is piqued?

A terrorist attack is a terrorist attack be it in Amarnath or London or Paris or APS.It has to be condemned not defended.

Except it wasn't a terrorist attack, even if you consider the militants terrorists. It was an attack against security forces who are a valid target for insurgents. You want to conflate this incident with a terrorist narrative so you can brand these militants terrorists by saying they targeted civilians indiscriminately, when it was anything but.

Here we go.Finally the cat is out. They are not terrorists.

The 'cat was never in the bag' to begin with. Kashmiri insurgents are resisting occupation. There's a difference between an insurgent/militant and a terrorist, I'm not surprised you don't know the difference. Oh and go and check the non-Indian news sources, they all agree with me

Suddenly the reports from the ground is not convincing for you. Never thought you would trust so called biased indian media. Your IG claims LET is behind as per indian media.Do you agree ? Don't pick and choose from either side to support your arguements. Don't except others to post reports which suits your version of stories.

Exceptionally sad, the sooner both sides put away their weapons and we have a dialogue/referendum as to what the people in Kashmir want to do, the better.

It's funny I'm being accused of this. The only reason I'm even mentioning Indian news media is because the original article is from an Indian source.

I couldn't care less about the Indian version, it's only to emphasise to you what the worst case observation is. It's not me skipping opening paragraphs of an article, it's you who's chosen a paragraph about an eyewitness account and ignored the mention of a crossfire therefore negating a targeted attack. CNN, Reuters, The Guardian, BBC have all used the word militant and mentioned the incident in the light of a crossfire between militants and police.

As for the accounts I'm going by victim's twitter accounts who say they could see nothing in the darkness and it's not consistent with the BBC eyewitness account who isn't even "the owner" of the bus as stated in the article but the son of one. Even so gunmen doesn't instantly mean militants unless Indian security forces were carrying poppies.

The reason I'm trying to explain this to you is to show you how hard you're trying to brand it a terrorist attack against the pilgrims. The Indian propaganda might have worked on the masses in India, but it's not so easy on the neutral observers.

An intelligence report that was circulated to the Jammu and Kashmir police, military and paramilitary units two weeks ago indicates security officials were expecting an attack. The memo, marked“top secret,” warned that a “sensational attack by terrorist outfits cannot be ruled out” in the region. The intelligence report, dated June 25, and verified as authentic by The Associated Press, said, “terrorists havebeen directed to eliminate 100 to 150 pilgrims and about 100 police.”

Indian extremists are too blind to see it. A senior politcian called Rajnath Singh mentioned something about Kashmiri spirit in condemning the attack and he was bombarded with hate speech. When it comes to Kashmir, India is a mess!

Clutching at straws here expecting people to believe Indian intelligence regarding Kashmir. Full report would be handy too, but if you continue to read the article it also mentions various differing accounts from the victims. If you want everyone else to believe the articles you post to be true, it'd help by starting with yourself.

Associated Press an independent agency verified the authenticity of intelligence report which is enough to prove that pilgrims were the targets.

Picking and choosing what you reply to but okay, glad you acknowledged that:

https://www.apnews.com/71d68c3031994d82bd26e592026d4663

Police said the attack began with gunmen unleashing a hail of bullets on an armored police vehicle and, soon after, on a nearby police patrol. They said that a bus carrying 60 Hindu pilgrims had been passing through the area when the patrolling police and militants were exchanging fire, and that some bullets struck the bus and its passengers.

"Several bus passengers who were wounded gave a different version of events....."

Thanks. Case closed. Now go take your disingenuity elsewhere

The plan of terrorists to target the pilgrims exposed that's enough

I've given you independent sources saying the same thing. You gave a specific mention to the AP report then ignore the rest of the article. The AP report verified they saw an intelligence document (don't know how they determined when it was written). They didn't say it was true or false. Still they go on to report a similar account to every report I've posted, not a mention of the words 'terrorist', 'terrorist attack' but a consistent reference to 'exchange of gunfire' and 'crossfire. In fact the AP report you confided in the most gives a specific mention to 'some bullets' striking the bus and passengers making your case even weaker.

Now go and view the Indian media and the massive disparity between the respective reports. You'll believe what you want to believe and reply what you wish to reply to. You and your narrative have been exposed.

My assessments are based on news reports from trustworthy sources. More news will be reported in coming days, in fact Inspector General of kashmir already revealed the names, photos of suspected terrorists and terrorist organizations behind the attack

You can keep calling terrorists as freedom fighters.

Trustworthy news sources? You've been posting false information, have you? If more news were coming, you should have said so at the beginning before posting a thread calling it a terrorist attack. Seems to me you knew it was a terrorist attack all along and the security services need not investigate further. You've been shown up trying to point-score and deem this a terrorist attack against pilgrims, when all non-Indian(and some Indian sources have reported otherwise.

There's really nothing else to be said. I'll leave it to arbitrary observers of this thread to make up their own mind about it. I'm done.

I've actually called them insurgents/militants. Most foreign governments may well have called it a terror attack, the news reports are clear on this issue. Who knows who they were referring to as 'terrorists'? There's always two sides to a conflict.

The bus wasn't supposed to be travelling at this time, so it's foolish to suggest this was a pre planned attack on the pilgrims. The attack was against the police, most likely as an opportunist attack not pre planned and the civilians got caught up in the cross fire.

India must take the blame for their deaths, as they have created the conditions for people to resist against their security forces who are systematically terrorisng a whole population.

Amarnath Yatra terror attack: Bus driver Salim, who drove through firing, says Allah gave me strength

Realising that halting the bus will have dangerous consequences, Salim drove for nearly two kilometres on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway before he reached an army camp. “It was about 8 pm when the bus was surrounded by terrorists. They first fired from the front with the intention to eliminate the driver. I ducked sideways to escape the bullets and drove ahead. I do not know how I got the strength to go on at that time. Maybe Allah helped me and gave me strength,”,he escaped unharmed in the incident while another passenger seated beside him was injured.

That'd explain the terrorist angle. It's not the first time governments have used the terrorist narrative to increase surveillance and absolve themselves of blame. I'm surprised India's growing economy hasn't been able to buy any influence to have Western media label Kashmiris terrorists, even with the massive terrorism narrative we see around the world.. They're still referred to as 'gunmen', 'insurgents', etc.

It really doesn't matter how people interpret an event. What matters is that credible and accurate information reaches the masses. This whole thread is a good warning for anyone who wishes to open a thread based on their prejudices and not on actual events. People will always interpret information towards their own beliefs and politics but at least have the decency to post facts.

This a good case of why the label of terrorism when used by opportunists should be called out for what it is. Pretending you care for these people and using them as pawns for a dangerous game. Abhorrent.
