In 1946, the British Cabinet Mission Plan offered a last attempt to keep India united by dividing it into three zones: A, B, and C. Muhammad Ali Jinnah accepted this proposal, stepping back from the demand for an immediate creation of Pakistan, as the Plan guaranteed Muslim-majority provinces strong autonomy within a united India.

The Congress Party publicly accepted the Plan but secretly intended to undo its safeguards. Their goal was to eventually dissolve the provincial groupings and centralize power, stripping Muslims of the protections they were promised.
This became clear on July 10, 1946, when Jawaharlal Nehru, in a 75-minute press conference, declared:

This became clear on July 10, 1946, when Jawaharlal Nehru, in a 75-minute press conference, declared:
“We are not bound by a single thing except that we have decided to go into the Constituent Assembly. … What we do there, we are entirely and absolutely free to determine. We have committed ourselves to nothing else.”
“The Constituent Assembly is sovereign. It can do what it likes. The grouping clauses are not binding on us.”

Even Indian sources acknowledge this betrayal.
- The TV series Freedom at Midnight (critical of Jinnah) highlights Nehru’s press conference as the turning point.
- Dhruv Rathee admits (from minute 10:50 onward) that Nehru entered the Constituent Assembly only to later “tweak” the zones.
Today Indians do not admit the dishonesty, treachery and deceit (behind the scenes) but focus on the error of Nehru's press conference.
The deceitful behavior of Hindus continues to this day in most facets of their lives where they do not acknowledge the obvious but continue to argue on the periphery of the issue. In a press statement shortly after, Jinnah said which remains true to this day:

“The Hindus are incorrigible. … Congress has made it clear that they mean to smash the whole Scheme. Now we have to fight for our own salvation.”
