Not a case of sour grapes. But ever since I started watching cricket, the umpires have always been considered untouchable and some holy entity in cricket.
Whether it was the biased umpiring back by home umpires in 80s and 90s or their errors in high profile matches where they gained notoriety [from fans], (Murali getting called for no ball by Hair, Dharmasena in 2019 wc, Bucknor in various matches involving India, Hair and Doctrove in the Oval test 2006 etc etc), umpires have historically been given leeway by ICC.
Cricket is a player's game and umpires really have no right to be the center of attention of it or being the ones to decide the outcome of the match.
DRS was introduced as an umpire protective ploy (something Dhoni said as well) rather than player protective.
Every now and then with every glitch or questionable decision, they are given an excuse as being human and prone to error but they don't get any admonishment from the governing organizations. They are always let off free without any sanctions or fines and are essentially untouchable.
With all the technology they have, and considering there are 3 umpires in a game, there should be no room for any mishap. The same way players get fined for causing any disruption, umpires should be sanctioned as well.
Apart from Hair getting banned from officiating internationals for a year, umpires have never been questioned by ICC for a possible bias or inability.
I'm all for umpire getting their due in challenging situations but they shouldn't be considered infallible and their reports (if any) regarding questionable decisions should be made public and they be penalized if found to be falling short of their duties.
Discuss please!
