Houston - Your thoughts on the city?

It is the kinda city that sucks life out of you. Unless you are into only Desi socializing with families and eating Pakistani food.

Otherwise, make a run for NYC (greatest city in the world, but not much else around it). Or better yet, move west to California. It’s expensive, but you can live life to the fullest.

Is it cuz most of the circle around you was desi. Honestly I don’t have a desi circle in Houston so don’t recognise many of the complaints on the thread. But holiday season in NYC was something else and houston is kinda dead.

I mean when you're working full time in a corporate job you don't have much time to socialize and put down roots. Most of your friends are just gonna be people you work with unless you drink and go to clubs.

Coming out of Europe and visiting American cities - they look lame and dead boring. Texas has to be the most boring place I have visited both Houston and Dallas in particular. I liked San Francisco in particular gives me the feeling of being in an European city. But yeah European cities are really awesome in terms of scenery, architecture, and even men/women.

One more thing, I forgot to mention damn they even had an Agha Fruit juice shop in Dallas. ***. You even have Karachi located in Dallas. ***:sarf2

Why do Europeans move to America then and not much the other way around?

Came to NY after 2 years for christmas vacations and man looked like a ghetto after being in Texas so long.

NYC might be a great city but with age(mine) it has lost its charm and covid hasn’t helped it.

Just cause it's livable doesn't mean it's not lame and dead, most cities in the flyover states are boring.

Outside of Northeast and parts of California US loses all it's charm (unless you're into nature Europe can't compete there)

European cities imo are next level anywhere in the continent

Coming from a big Europe hater...

I'm not a fan of Europe, the flyover states got great nature but not much else. It's the coastal cities where it's at.

IMO it’s harder to move to Europe from America than it is from Europe to the US. Longer processes and whatnot. I was thinking about moving to Sweden for work but people living there say you’ll be at a disadvantage because even though they speak English there, It’s very important to know how to speak Swedish in a business setting. I imagine a similar language barrier issue in the other Western European countries especially France.

They have agha juice in Houston too. With pictures of everything Karachi on the wall lol. To their credit, the falooda is actually amazing and the exact same to what you can find in Karachi.

But I gotta say if you’re foreign visiting Texas, then you have to stop over at Austin. It has the Texan charm but is also full of life and a cultural melting pot of sorts. Kind of like a less expensive and cleaner NYC.

Why do Europeans move to America then and not much the other way around?

A lot of people from other developed countries move to the US because of the higher income. They just want to save up a lot of money and then move back to their country.

I thought you’re Chicago?

I was in Chicago like 1 and half years ago.. been in Texas since then.

Not sure about you but Chicago also looks like a ghetto compared to Bay area to me. Downtown is nice, but outside of that it's mostly run down and the suburbs will make you slit your throat.

I had a nostalgic view before i visited Chicago(after being away for an year) and have to say I agree with you, and uptown Chicago was actually good in my mind not anymore.

Also Chicago and area near by is very similar GTA..

GTA doesn't give that run down feeling that Chicago area does. The buildings, the infrastructure is just rotting in most of Chicago. I guess its similar in terms of poulation and a downtown core with a lot of tall buildings, but for me the non-downtown areas of Toronto as well as suburbs like Mississauga were enjoyable. Can't say that for Chicago and its suburbs.

I haven't spent any huge time in New York so can't speak for certain but based on what I hear from people and what I see in videos it looks worse than Chicago. Don't have any huge expectations for when I go there.

The west coast of the US seems to be most interesting in my opinion. California and Seattle to be precise. There are tech companies opening offices in Austin and a lot of people have moved there, but beyond the lower taxes and cheaper housing, I think bay area is far ahead in every way.

You 100% don't know cause you're saying about Chicago

"run down feeling that Chicago area does. The buildings, the infrastructure is just rotting in most of Chicago"

And than You are saying that NYC or trie state area is worse than Chicago in that aspect

Than you clearly haven't seen NY

Most wow!! If something exaplifies talking out of your a** than is it

Just wow

Lived in NY and it's suburbs for so many years and in so many areas

I wish I could see the "rotting away" or the feeling you get in rust belt areas

The homeless problem in bay area is insane tho. Doesn’t feel safe.

That's why I said I can't speak for certain. If you feel differently then so be it.

It's mostly confined to a few areas, i.e. parts of SF and parts of Oakland. Unless someone was living or working in those areas, they'd rarely go to those areas.

The problem is that a lot of states literally send their homeless people to California, they pay for their one way bus/plane ticket to California since those other states see the poor as a blemish on their states

Chicago is a phenomenal city, it's top 5 in North America. Of course Toronto looks like nicer, it's Canada's most important city while Chicago is like 3rd or 4th for America. Also Toronto has more of an artificial vibe, it's skyline is full of white condo buildings and a tall radio tower, it doesn't have the depth, the warmth and the history that Chicago has. Chiraq is just a whole another level to Toronto.

Er no.. Chicago has better transit in the city than Toronto, also other than sauga other areas don’t even compare.

I’m certain you didn’t check out areas like St.Charles around Chicago..

Another aspect where Chicago really beats Toronto is Lake shore drive , esp during christmas...

And downtown wise Chicago is again better than Toronto so only aspect where GTA seems better is Missisauga.. nothing else honestly..

Great place to raise a family, great food, cricket, weather is bad from May through September. But it’s got a strong desi community and a vibrant desi scene.

Many of you may not believe it but Karachi influence in the desi community is so much that some desi businesses are forced to pay “Bhatta” by the goons of MQM. Yes, I am talking Houston USA.

First hand experience.
A very close friend moved to Houston and opened a desi restaurant. He hails from Karachi.
Within a week, mqm goons stopped by his restaurant and placed a catering order for 70 people to be delivered at a certain address as some local mqm politician (forgot his name) was visiting Houston from Karachi.

This poor fellow took the order and asked for payment, to which, they said that this is your monthly cost to do business if you want to stay in Houston.

Anyway, long story short, he refused the order and started getting threats to his family n kids. May be it was a bluff but he gave in, and wrapped up his business and moved out of TX.
As he hails from Karachi, he was sure that the threats were potentially true as his family in Karachi also started receiving threat calls.

For me personally, it’s a no no.
Traffic and transit is horrible. Long drives and long lines. Summer weather is somewhat similar to Pakistan.

Desi community is there but everyone has their own group. I am not a fan of such environment.

MQM can’t take bhatta in Karachi these days so I doubt they’re doing it somehwre else

Chicago arguably has better transit, I'll give that. But as for areas other than Mississauga not comparing, I'll disagree with that quite strongly. Outside the downtown you really can't tell it apart from most rustbelt cities, it's that bad. I know you've spent significant amount of time in Chicago, I myself have spent around 6 months in the city in total so I am not exactly someone that just came to visit on a weekend. I've been to the Northwestern Suburbs in Kane County, the suburbs of DuPage county and honestly it was all too sleep-inducing.

I'll give you that the downtown is better but only marginally, but honestly outside that I have no idea why a lot of people in living in metro Chicago jerk themselves off to it.

Lmaooo bruh this sounds like fiction, my grandpa also ran businesses in the Houston area and so have many my relatives and family friends and they have never experienced this. Perhaps your friend has some connections to that organization but other than that there's no other way they could harass him all the way in Texas. They're not like the Italian mob in New York lol.

Ok I have to say Austin has to be hands down among top 3 cities in the US.

what are the other 2?

That’s a tricky question because tbh I hadn’t thought of it.

Almost every city has its own charm but For me personally. NYC and Denver. Maybe Boston over Denver but I don’t know Boston that well. Would pick Denver due to the closeness to the mountains.

Also like Charlotte, New Orleans. Didn’t really like LA or SF. Haven’t been to Seattle or Chicago yet from the major cities.

If you ever go to Chicago, try to visit Sabri Nihari. Best Nihari that i have had in US.

Yup heard of that and tried the Karachi one. That’s great.

Visit in summer not winter, not even spring.. Devon is the place where all desi restaurants are incl Sabri Nihari.

I love Dallas area now after i took a trip to Nyc, Chicago during christmas coz i don’t like cramped cities anymore..not sure how NYC is still your fav.. probably memories?

Yea memories. And I guess also cuz thats I have most of my friends from undergrad. I don’t know if I would wanna live there long term again tho. I like it for stretches of 4/5 days.

If Pakpassion is your only social activity then Dallas of course but if you like cultural stuff and that kind of stuff then maybe New York City. To be honest, I really enjoyed watching Broadway shows when I was there as an exchange student. Able to witness the real local talent on display. But yeah Manhatten is probably a unique place as it gets - walking there was a sheer joy. And some skyscrapers were built up in the 1930s like the empire state building goes to show that how far it was ahead of the game than the rest of the world. To be honest, visiting the USA during Summer was nothing short of craziness--too much humidity - not able to walk outside.

Ok I have to say Austin has to be hands down among top 3 cities in the US.

I love Austin but it needs a lot of work to get to top 3, heck or even the top 15. Infrastucture isn't keeping up with the population boom, being a landlocked city doesn't help in that regard on in international appeal and the city doesn't have any major league sports teams so it will be perennially a second or third tier city, aesthetically it is top 10 without a doubt.

Houston is an eye sore. Sucks. Dallas is better . Austin is even better. NYC is where it’s at

They are getting an MLS team. MLS is not really a major league, but its still something.

They have lakes. So lot of water based activities.

Also college football is huge. UT’s stadium is bigger and grander than most nfl stadiums 🏟

No value for money in the long term. And esp due to covid city’s been miserable. Hopefully recovers

Not surprised, it's one of the more sophisticated cities in Texas lol they got the stereotype of being the artsy fartsy liberal types so futbol is more their vibe.

Yeah the longhorns are phenomenal at football and basketball but still college sports is not enough to be a world class city, they need major league teams but I don't think it's viable yet.

It is definitely an eyesore (apart from pockets of pretty areas here and there), it's got to be one of the ugliest cities in the U.S.

However, I lived there for about 7 or 8 years, and once I discovered the local scene, it became a lot of fun, I still miss it sometimes.

Furthermore, the desi scene there is pretty intense too with numerous desi hangouts all over the city, so if you are into that kind of stuff you will never miss the homeland.

Man I miss houston.. lammey khaabey, cricket.

When I was younger, there was a time I was playing 4 days a week. Friday night tapeball, Saturday hardball league, Sunday hardball league and then Monday night tapeball. Houston cricket scene is very very vibrant. Good desi community and plenty of decent employers around. Good for business as well.
I-12 schools are a bit of a problem though and you have to carefully plan if you have school going kids.

Oh I thought you’re houston. Where are you now?

Oh I thought you’re houston. Where are you now?
Not anymore. I’m in Buffalo, NY area now.
The damn snow here is depressing and I miss the houston heat, never thought I would say it but there it is!

Yeah try to get out of here man

But the city is cheap ah...

Oh man that is some change... nyc to Houston has been a big adjustment weather wise (mostly good but sometimes miss cool breezes) but the other way around to Buffalo doesn’t sound fun. Upstate nyc is freezing

You there too?!? Lol what are the odds of that.

Benefits of NY state like healthcare/suny
Dirt cheap living expenses like deep south

While not being as racist as deep south well segerated like NYC but still not a lot of racism that's a decent deal

But I'll be going somewhere warm after uni for sure!

Suburbs. The plan is to move back to TX in a few. I am hoping for austin or San Antonio area.

Slog, are you in Houston now? I thought you were in Chicago or thereabouts

Suburbs. The plan is to move back to TX in a few. I am hoping for austin or San Antonio area.

Yeah it's a PERFECT plan and you can save a LOT of money here for sure!
It's really cheap- how many years you have living in Buffalo and what's your field (you can refuse to answer this part that's ok, but job market here is kinda bad I am asking it from that presepective)

Have you guys had food at clay handi the Pakistani restaurant in Buffalo?

Their vegetarian food was amazing in 2018.. not sure how it is now.

Pakistani uncles were coming at night 11 having food and then ordering tea man.. so weird is that a Pakistani thing?

A few years. I am a private consultant and do contract work remotely for different companies and some small businesses on the side.

Honestly I didn’t expect Buffalo to be such a dull place. It’s amazing NY stste has so much beauty and so many things going for it but really economically it’s so stagnant. I guess the republicans are right about how their states are better off. The gulf coast area is ugly as hell but at least it’s financially and economically thriving.

Stewie but whatever the case it's good to see Lahori.bois in the city :ds

It’s still here but the food is a bit hit and miss.. there are days it’s good and days it’s pretty bad.

Buffalo is great to visit .. the downtown looked good.. but I guess its not great to live..I remember Hamilton was moving there from
Chicago.. excellent musical if you guys are ok to spend that much..

Went there ordered nihari guy was really rude
Came back with nihari -one of the worst things one can eat
BAD experience!

Go to desi dhabha real good food especially nihari (we don't eat a lot of veg things so go at your own precaution)
Plus he was a Lahori from my hometown gulshan ravi (like he had a restruant there so he really KNOWS his thing) so there's a bias there :sk

Second part yeah that's my dad you are talking about isn't it? :ashwin

Cheers, yaara. Lahore, Lahore ai! I haven’t been back in ages though. I am planning a trip soon as this pandemic crap is over.

Speaking of... that dhaba at the Niagara Falls next to the Indian Punjabi restaurant... man their food was good last time we ate there. I don’t k or if you ever been..

If you mean eating food late, then yes. However harder to do in the states since restaurants normally close earlier. And yes after dinner people like drinking chai.

Wow we are getting sooo off topic now, I’m sure these posts will be deleted soon. Any fellow UH alumni here? Class of 2003 here..

Yeah he told me. We happened to be there the last day he was open. He said he is moving back to NYC or something. Kind of sucks though. This was in October I believe.

Lol no never in Chicago. Was in nyc

Interesting.. we really swapped states, didn’t we? Hope you are enjoying it in Houston. That’s where I went to school and spent the best years of my life, tons of memories there.

Yeah meant drinking tea after dinner at mid night.

Depends what u value. I have been here over 25 years. I don’t mind a small apartment . I lived in the. Midwest suburban life before. Never going back to that. Schools are amazing in my district. No car or driving. Only drawback in small apartments.

Less to do with politics and more to do with warmer weather and Texas' Oil based economy plus you moved from coastal city to an inland one, a better comparison would be with NYC

Houston is an okay city but nothing special. The downtown looks very dodgy on weekends and public holidays. They have good network of underground shopping malls though. Also its an hour drive from Sea town of Gaveston if you are a beach person.

Dallas is also overhyped but better than Houston. Fort Worth is actually the best city in Texas and if you want to see real Texan cowboys, you should visit here. They have a free 'Molly the Trolley' shuttle which will take you from train station via all sight seeing routes to the Stockyards. You can hop on/hop off as many times you want.

Texas as a whole is not that great compared to other great US cities like NYC, Chicago, Miami or LA but you would get the best food there in the country (both quantity and quality wise). For us Indians, Dallas feels like closest to Hyderabad you can get outside India as 90% of Indian food is Andhra/Hyderabadi cusine.
