How come majority of terror suspects in the West seem to be North African?

I have noticed a trend. There are many Muslim countries in the world. But it seems majority of men commiting these acts particularly recently appear to be of North African orgin or immigrants from the North African countries particularly Morocco or Tunisia. In fact for such a small country, Tunisia has the highest number of men joining ISIS, than any other country.

The strange thing is that Tunisia and Morocco are perhaps the most western and liberal Muslim countries, and may not be rich but economically still much better off compared to other Muslim countries. So what causes men from North African background to commit these acts?

Not to generalise, but having met many North African Muslims in the West. Many of them openly drink, love hip hop and break dancing, sleep around with no care, date non Arab girls and happily marry them - unlike south Asians. And the terrorists usually come from the same backgrounds, previously having lived the rock and roll lifestyles.

Is it due to the fact what's happened closer to home in Libya and Egypt?

I suppose it's also important to mention that many of them live in ghettos and poor areas e.g. In France.

It's a good point because countries like Morocco and Tunisia are fairly open tolerant Arab countries so you wonder why there has been a vacuum for these radical jihadist groups to breed.

Algeria there was a brutal civil war along with the past French involvement regarding colonisation and influence so you can understand why that country became a hotbed for extremist groups to infiltrate their propaganda.

Libya has become a total disaster since the foreign intervention that happened in 2011. I did not like Gaddafi at all but now I wish he was still there.
It's become A failed state where militias operate freely and a government that can only control the capital.

It's very easy to get in to Europe from the N African countries. First goal s to get to Morocco and then in to Spain...this is the same route used by cocaine smugglers in Peru and Colombia to bring their drugs to Europe.

In my own personal experience, North Africans in the West that I have met are probably the most westernised Muslims. Many have even said to me that they don't practice don't fast, and are only Muslims by name. Of course I'm generalising but this is just based on my experience. For example, many Pakistanis or Somalis do drink but not as openly and proudly as I've seen with Moroccans or Tunisians. A lot of them marry non religious white girls but unlike Pakistanis, they families don't seem to mind.

So then why are somany young men turning to extremism!

Maybe cause they are religious? The ones here are just a false representation of their communities. Also a lot of the maghrebis here are Berber nationalists so they don't like to be called Arab or anything related to Arabs (such as religion).

ISIS are not the only terrorist group on the planet. Your article also talks about those who go and fight in Syria yet your title is regarding the west.

No one ethnicity or race has a monoloy in producing terrorists, they can be any colour or creed. The sooner you understand this the more sense it will make to you.

I know someone who grew up in Marseille, a city where a lot of Maghrebins move to.

From what I am told, a significant number of them have very extreme Wahhabi views of Islam and refuse to assimilate into society in any way. My friend went to school there and was regularly threatened, bullied, and told that she would 'go to hell' for being Christian because the majority of kids in schools there are North African Muslims.

It is not that they are religious, they will even dress liberally. The issue with these people is that they are total fanatics and do not even want to assimilate into society or even meet people who are non-Muslim. They are basically very self-righteous and believe that it is their duty to convert everyone around them. My friend tells me that many kids in schools there convert to Islam just to stop being bullied.

Just a case of victim mentality and sour grapes. They need someone to blame for their terrible state, the west is an easy target. At least in Pak we are trying to liberate the country from corrupt politicians. The Africans and Arabs are doing doing at all.

The stabbing in Finland was another Moroccan. A teenage asylum seeker. Asylum seekers from Morocco seriously? Morocco isn't a war torn place such as Libya or Syria. Exactly what danger was he in fleeing Morocco?

This thread has parallels with another thread from a few weeks ago which was asking why countries like Tunisia and Morocco are hotter tourist destinations than Pakistan. Geographical proximity to Europe was the consensus there, and I'd argue that that is a major factor here as well.

On another note, it's pretty disappointing that Pakistanis in the West allow themselves to be discriminated on the back of actions from these African groups. It's not something that should happen, as bar the religious similarity there is nothing correlating the two at all.

I'd be pretty knackered if I was living in France and got hauled up because some duffer from Vietnam decided to get rowdy. Absurd? Well that's exactly what is happening above.

Surely it's just a numbers thing. In France, Spain etc the majority of their Muslim population are of North African origin. Therefore the majority of their Islamist terrorists are also North African.

In Britain the biggest Muslim group are those from the subcontinent hence most people in jail for terrorism in this country are from the same group.
