What's new

How great was Viv Richards in Test cricket and where would he rank?

Had he played in the 1992 WC, I doubt Pakistan would have lost a match.

It was interesting that Stewart played him best of the England players in 1992 - having seen a lot of him at Surrey, no doubt.

Exactly what I mean. He got figures out rather easily. He never developed. It wasn't the freak injury in his case. He was fine in that regard. He got figures out hence the poor record later vs India and Australia.

Without Shami and bumrah and Ishant. Sure.

With them you guys will get pasted too. We had a crap team in 90s because of our weak *** Medicare bowing. With those they can very well beat Pakistan in the 90s.

You never won a bilateral series in India in the 90s. You won some Asia cup test series involving Lanka etc.

lol, sure Shami and Bumrah are better than Wasim and Waqar, lol. India didn't even qualify for the final of the Asian test championship in 1999. Got knocked out by Pak and Lanka, lol . Pak won the one off Kolkata test, Sachin got a golden duck, then India got knocked out by Sri Lanka, great days.

Bumrah and Shami already better than the fraud that is waqar easily.
Wasim is a legend. I respect him. Waqar lived off Wasim. Not to mention the fighters he had with Wasim. I know about the personal issues between them two.

If bumrah is injury free he can overtake Wasim. Besides Wasim played in a more bowling friendly era in 90s. No reason why Shami and bumrah can average the same as him.
Besides I check his bowling average vs top teams of his era. It's actually 28.

Bumrah>>>>> Waqar, happy now ?

Bumrah is a certified ATG, its an insult to Bumrah to be compared to Wasim.

No? I never said bumrah greater than wasim?
Wasim is the best ever from Asia. Bumrah has potential to get there but he isn't close yet. I just don't understand why you guys overrate waqar. He cost Pakistan many games. He also lived off Wasim.

Exactly, some here are even comparing Bumrah with Wasim Akram :)) like man I’m a huge fan of Bumrah but :apology

Based on skill and ability Bhai. No one is saying bumrah is better than wasim lol. He needs to play at least 70 tests first and then we can compare him with Wasim.

And God I love that emoji. 🤣

I understand where you’re coming from and I appreciate Bumrah’s skills and abilities but isn’t it a very premature comparison? It’s like when Indians make fun of Pakistanis for overhyping Babar and making comparisons early in his career.

With Bumrah, he is definitely very skilled but you’re comparing him with someone who makes most all time XIs in ODI and Test cricket (not mine or yours or any other fan’s, but the all time XIs of most ex-cricketers). And as good as Bumrah is, he is not a “magician” the way Wasim was, perhaps a better comparison is Allan Donald.

The comparison between Jasprit Bumrah and Wasim Akram is equivalent to a comparison between Babar Azam and Sachin Tendulkar. It’s completely unfounded at this stage of their careers, and even at this stage of their careers Akram and Tendulkar were far, far more skilled.

I am all for appreciating an amazing modern cricketer but let’s not pretend Bumrah is an automatic selection in even an Asian Test XI, you’d first need to compare him to the likes of Mohammad Asif (Asif pips it), Shoaib Akhtar (Bumrah pips it in SENA but Akhtar overall), and most importantly Imran Khan. Then you get to Wasim Akram, and then you discuss the all-time XI.

Let’s not drag down past greats to glorify the modern greats. Maybe one day Bumrah will get there, and for the sake of cricket I hope he does, the same way I hope Babar will one day overtake Tendulkar (let alone Kohli).

He helped to beat Ind in Ind in 98-98, you know the one that had the likes of Tendulkar and Dravid playing. He is rated by every player and pundit, who are you? A nobody, so your opinion on fast as Indian is worth as about as Ben Johnsons on drug cheats in Sport- Zilch

:))) He averaged 76.50 at an SR of 147 in the 2 Test matches of that series. And regarding the last Test that was played as a separate Test, he didn't take a single wicket so his average can't be calculated in that match. Helped his team beat India in India in that series, really?

He took both the openers in Chennai, and we won. That's good enough for me.

Sir Vivian Richards is in reflective mood.

"As the days go by you may not look your age but certainly you do feel it," he says.

He is 70, but certainly doesn't look it. The death of legendary Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne, a man he describes as 'joyous', has moved him deeply.

But Richards has other reasons to reflect.

The impact of his batting went far beyond the runs he scored - 15,261, including 35 centuries, across 308 Tests and one-day internationals for West Indies. That's only a statistical estimation of greatness.

Richards knows the way he played cricket, his poise and courage, was hugely influential, especially for black people.

"As a young man growing up, I was always reading about the struggles in America, the Black Panthers," he says.

"I was conscious in that way, it was a message being sent. These were defenders of your race because of some of the stuff which was going on.

"I was pretty strong about that. Maybe that's why some folks would look at me sometimes and say, 'Wow, what an arrogant guy' in the way he walked out and stuff like that.

"It isn't arrogance. I just believe in human beings and that's the most important thing."

We meet in the north of Antigua, not far from where Richards grew up and only 15 minutes from the stadium which carries his name.

During the three-Test series between West Indies and England, that starts at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, the two sides will play for the new Richards-Botham Trophy.

His friendship with former England all-rounder and captain Lord Botham began in 1974 when they were team-mates at Somerset.

"He's a guy who I've spent a great amount of time with in my life, sharing dressing rooms and being in opposition also," says Richards of Lord Botham.

"Having the trophy with someone who you hold dear to your heart and you consider a friend - that is pretty good news in my opinion."

Sir Viv Richards and Lord Botham unveiled the new trophy named after them, which replaces the Wisden Trophy, in Antigua
Later, when they meet at the stadium, Richards and Botham embrace, banter and giggle together as if they were back in the flat they shared as young cricketers in Taunton.

Both men produced heroic displays for their countries over the years although, as Botham readily admits, West Indies utterly dominated England during his Test career.

Test cricket back then was, without doubt, the format that mattered. Yet some of Richards' Test innings, like the 110 from 56 balls in Antigua in 1986, which featured one-handed sixes, practically invented T20 batting.

He smiles and explains: "Sometimes you become a little bit bored with just the general stuff and you try to be creative.

"This is what my game was always about, being as creative as possible, giving the best I can, believing in the talent you have.

"That is of paramount importance, for any young individual. If you have it, flaunt it."

There's an easy laughter which follows this answer as Richards fondly enjoys the memories.

But his understanding and passion for history is far deeper. Antigua was a British colony which used African slave labour on its plantations.

When we discuss the legacy of the British Empire it is not enough to simply stop at cricket.

"We, as a people, have given this world a lot," adds Richards.

"And the generations who come through whatever period of colonialism, and who were responsible for that, should tell their generations and kids. Let them know exactly how some obviously gained their wealth.

"We played a huge part without being paid. So, we hear nowadays about reparations for slavery and that to me is a good call."

At 70, Richards has a perspective far beyond cricket but then, he always did.

I wish him happy birthday and he accepts by extending his appreciation.

"Let me take this opportunity to thank all the individuals around the world who would have admired the way I've done things," says Richards. "Even the haters, I do appreciate you all.

"Thank you so much, for my 70th."

The youth of the sites membership is showing. Viv is so far and away the best batsman post 1970 (modern era) as to make any comparison pointless. No one dominated attacks with such grace and power. Folks ranking him 4th or 5th in tests is a joke. I am mid 50s. I have seen all the modern giants - only Lara comes close in game changing class and quality.

Indian fans are overhyping SG. He was great but not a patch on IVA Richards.
