What's new

How is Coronovirus pandemic affecting your day to day life?

You can try this!

===

Time spent self-isolating can be quite repetitive, but Sam Hustler has taken this monotony to new heights.

The 27-year-old is running a half marathon for charity on his four-metre-long east London balcony.

That's roughly 5,500 lengths each way.

Mr Hustler had planned to join 14,000 other runners for the London Landmarks Half Marathon on 29 March before the coronavirus pandemic forced it to be postponed.

But he was glad he would still be able to compete in his first half marathon when the event organisers got creative and replaced the race with a "virtual" local landmarks run instead, where participants run around their local area and snap photos of their local sights.

Less than a week before the race, his girlfriend started showing symptoms of COVID-19 which meant he would have to self-isolate for two weeks.

Refusing to accept defeat, he devised a plan C.

"I saw a video of an Italian man doing a full marathon on his balcony and I thought, 'that's something I can do'," Mr Hustler told Sky News while running on his balcony.

"I went outside on to my balcony and did a couple of kilometres and thought I could do it. It's just over four metres in length."

The Woodford man had run just under four miles in an hour when he spoke to Sky News, and had quite quickly realised the challenges of running in a confined and uncomfortable space.

"I'm feeling incredibly bored," he said.

"My ankles are in quite a bit of pain already. But I'll keep going - it's just a little niggle. I'm changing directions and the way I'm running back and forth."

He credited his podcast list, music collection and encouragement from his girlfriend Chloe, who cheered him on from inside his flat, for keeping him going.

And there was a special cause that motivated him to reach his goal of running the 13 miles in three hours.

"I'm running for the Haven House Children's Hospice, which is a local charity that I've known for a long time and is opposite my cricket club," he said.

"What they do is quite outstanding. I've raised about £500 for them; more than half in the past few days."

Although Mr Hustler missed out on running past some of London's famous landmarks, he said the sights from his third-floor balcony could be worse, adding he could "just about see Canary Wharf".

He's not the only long-distance runner improvising during lockdown.

Southampton man Gareth Allen reportedly ran 1,066 laps in his garden on Saturday to make up the distance of a marathon.

A video of the achievement posted online attracted 300,000 views and many comments praising his creativity and perseverance

True champion. Stay safe and stay strong Sir. May ALLAH protect us all.

Thanks for your lovely prayers, I pray the same for you and your family and for everyone. Out of all the health care providers, if I have to single out one to be the true champions/heroes, its the nurses, no question about that. They're the one who spend most time with the patients and are most at risk.

I managed to learn quite a bit about currency trading (forex) during this Coronavirus outbreak. That's one of the positives for me.

I think this break can be used to do many productive things.

Lockdown is getting on my nerves. Its getting depressing.

Tell yourself its a temporary situation and it will improve.

From my side, I tell myself that I have been lucky to have not lived through a war, as my parents generation did, multiple wars actually. This is closest I have lived in a war situation, except that there is no terror of being attacked...

Another way to look at it is that many of our grandparents or great grandparents lived through the Spanish flu time, it is now our turn to live through a pandemic, which so far has been much more benign compared to the Spanish flu for 95% of us.

What is getting to my nerve is all those people glorifying lockdowns and calling for it to be made a regular feature of our lives, the ones who do it tend to be video gamers or climate lovers or extreme introverts

Thanks bro. Good advice.

Many key workers in my family. We get on with it.

Annoys me when people think they are the only ones with key workers in their family and are affected by this virus and make a huge drama over everything.

What's annoying me the most about the current situation is those snobs and 'silver-spoon' brigade who think governments and health services owe them just because they've been spolit all their lives.

And how they feel that they and their kids should get preferential treatment from everyone.

Some people without major bills and who are living with their parents and are eligible to receive unemployment insurance are actually breathing a sigh of relief that they don't have to go to work and can afford to sit at home for the next 2-3 months.

Really man? Selfishness has no limits.

After working daily without any break for weeks, got a lighter day today. Two of my ICU doctor colleagues came back , out of quarantine. But being at the epicenter of corona virus infection in USA, there is no break in numbers of deaths and load of patients in ICU we are dealing with.

Now we're at the critical stage of out fight against the covid 19 pandemic. More patients are dying on daily basis than ever before but now we're starting to see more patients coming out of ventilators, although numbers are still far less than dying and the new patients admitted. Some treatment is actually working, we hope so.

We are not seeing any signs of slowing down of the admissions in ICU , yet but it was good to hear some hopeful news from NYC, across the Hudson river from us. We're seeing light at the end of the tunnel, but tunnel is still very long.

Not just for me but for everyone in my team these have been the toughest days of our lives. Never saw so many deaths in such a short period of time and some of them I knew personally . Some health care personnel could not take the stress and just quite it but almost all other showed great resilience and toughness. Nurses and young physicians, residents and fellows have been working under great risk of catching the infection and couple of them became positive.

After living in USA for many years, I had a chance to see, up close and personal, the true character of a common American, at the time of extreme stress. They are really nice people, generous , patriotic, tough, hardworking and great team player . With such a great team, we going to win this war, no question about it.

My prediction is that western governments are going to impose medical drafts on the common person where young people will be ordered by law to start helping out in hospitals and failure to answer that call means a jail sentence

Never going to happen.

Never going to happen.

Why not? Madness brings out the worst in people and govt's. I have seen many videos on social media's about doctors, nurses and volunteers complaining about being overworked, insufficient sleep, gigantic stress, not enough people on the ground, insufficient protective masks, gloves and that they are literally being forced to the death chambers in the Covid 19 zones. Some doctors and nurses have even quit their jobs in these circumstances given that they have kids to go to, people who depend on them at home.

What is there to stop desperate govt's from demanding people to help out in hospitals in the Covid zones in these circumstances? Heck given the desperation for masks, ventilators and supplies, I fear nations might threaten each other with sanctions and military action if things continue to spiral out of control.

Vast majority of businesses are in the same boat. Imran Khan is absolutely correct that lockdowns are just not sustainable in the long run and most governments cannot afford to support their people indefinitely and this even includes countries like the US, UK, Canada, you can forget about third world countries.

I am a front line soldier in this pandemic, i have my small role to play, which i am gladly doing without going into details, and not much has changed for me, but for my family it has caged them in, i was in the midst of selling/buying but due to corona it fell through.... o well thats life, full of stern tests...

please take necessary precautions but do not limit/confine urself indoors, try to switch things up, get some fresh air, some sunlight (obv staying in a safe spot or from your backyard. Do not let negativity and the news hype get to you. Stay safe, stay healthy, and look towards a better tomorrow.

I wish my house had a full fledged gym and swimming pool so that I could exercise full fledged. Early on in the first few days I caught up on the movies, tv serials I missed out on and a few video games I hadn't played for a while. But in the last 2 weeks I have been taking as many online courses as I can to try and develop some new skills, certifications and have even ordered reading materials for a few exams I plan on taking down the line. Apart from that I help my dad out around the house and go outside grocery shopping for the family. Story of my life for now.

Not sure what life is life for others.

This is the 4th week of parital-lockdown

I am slowly starting to lose my sanity, even though I go out from time to time and am in contact with other people. The biggest mental toll of this war is not knowing when this will be over, while the enemy may be lurking in the shadows.

Young people are already being encouraged to sign up for volunteer work at the hospitals. However, if the situation ever gets so bad that the government has to force this by law, then it's too late to save anybody.

They are letting out prisoners right now, since it's supposedly overcrowded. They can't threaten me with jail! #notaftraid

People are not going to risk their lives with this virus especially knowing their is a shortage of marks, gloves and protective material. Even if these things were available, I know of some doctors who are refusing to go because of the fear of dying and because they have people who depend on them. The govts may be forced to enforce people's participation by law just like what happened in the US during the Vietnam War

oi mate, yes, gym, i was 4 months into a solid life style/health/body transformation and gym was a big part of it, i had never been that addicted to gym, and then corona happened... although i m keeping good on all else, but lack of gym is hurting...

Our org will decide after 15th whether to pay 100% to employees or not only 35% staff rest all on rest which will be decided after 15th that will they be furloughed

Sincere advice, stop thinking about it all the time.

I dont care at all, Ive figured out what I need to do and am continue living my life best I can. I get up, clean, go for a long session of exercise, cook some nice food and chill out.

You could be living with famine in Africa or Yemen. You could be in Iraq with children who were born with defects due to chemical weapons. You could be in Mumbai in one of the slums where 80 people share one bathroom.

Are you a man of faith? If not , you will struggle unless you wake up and go to sleep believing you are still much better off than billions, which you are.

I’m actually enjoying the lockdown. The earth & environment were in need of a much needed break from pollution. Life was a constant go-go all the time, it has scaled back, which is good.

Feel greatly sorry for the people and small businesses who got caught up in this disease.

Just received the mail from HR and CFO of my company. They have decided to cut the salaries of all the employees by 33% till the situation improves. Thats huge deduction :(

Given the current situation its getting worse day by day. Nobody has a clue what’s going to happen next. Depressing times ahead.

The scary thing right now is that the epidemic hasn't even peaked yet. This could be the biggest economic catastrophe seen in a very long time

If it was just about me than it wouldn't be a too big of an issue. It is about the wellbeing of my family and relatives and how to best protect them, since quite a few belong to risk group. That's the biggest cause of concern.

Thanks for the advice. It makes sense and I have started to cut down on news and let go. Somethings are under our control, while others aren't. I need to focus on those that are under my control and work on them to the best of my ability.

I hope you and your family stay healthy and well.

You are blessed living in a fantastic country with beatiful views and a very civilised society. You have all what you need to stay safe. I think its important to stay happy all the time, accept we are now living in a different world(hopefully temporary) and this is part of life. We have to adapt to our surroundings and recognise we have more than most. May God give you peace and remove any stress and anxiety.

Posters might think im just saying this but I wake up happy and go to sleep happy. Along with natural foods , excercise its the best way foward under these circumstances. Man made or naturual, lockdown or slaverly, they cannot break your soul, only you can.

:14::14: great advice.

i would also add, this time truly gives us a chance to reflect on our life, relationships, and areas we may need to mend. Allows us to develop an appreciation for everyone that plays a role in our life, from elderly parents who may be at risk and we may not have taken as great care of as we can or called as often if living away as we need to, to neighbors we may have ignored, to community members and everyone who works to keep communities going (garbage man to nurses, to ER person, small businesses, grocery staff, delivery man, etc.), and to be thankful for all the blessings we have had all along that we may have taken for granted, including our health and every breath along the way in our life.

Additionally, if you have strong faith and believe in the Mercy of Allah that he can forgive even the most gravest of sins, then even the thought of worst case scenario of transitioning from this world to the next should no be something to "worry" about if we hope for the best outcomes for us and any of our relatives/friends. Still its easier to say it than to be truly believing it and living it, which is something I can't say I am able to do fully either.

Thanks for adding, spot on.

To add further.

You will come across many people who are scared, confused and therefore touchy, meaning they can easily get angry or upset. People who have been friends or close to you will become further and further as this unprecidented event continues. They might reach out to you in many different ways, from sending videos on wattasp or asking for help of some sort, perhaps financial.

How you deal with them will effect your life esp your emotions. I deal with it in simple terms, if a stranger becomes rude or touchy for no reason, speak to them in a calm manner to relax, it's tough times. If a friend needs help, help them unless you are putting yourself in danger or if helping them will stress you out, ie giving money you dont have. If someone is putting you at risk in terms of the law or health, just stay way from them, regardless of who they are. Many will be fake and wont help you in return. I dont care about them at all and igonre them. You dont not help those who will not help you even if they have the ability or means . I would rather help those who are in need and are strangers.

My dad is badly shaken to the core. He just discovered that one of his childhood best friends passed away from the epidemic

Annoys me when I see some idiots who live comfortably and are quite well-off around the world obsessed with their job when they aren't even key workers. These idiots are risking their own life and the lives of others, just for a pat on the back from their bosses.

A new poll suggests that most people in the UK will want to alter their lives in some way after the coronavirus pandemic.

In fact, only 9% of people say they want life to return to how it was before. Some 54% agreed with this statement: "I hope to change some things about my life and I hope we will have learned from this as a country."

Some respondents (51%) said they had noticed the air was cleaner and others (27%) said they had seen more wildlife. Four in 10 said there had been a stronger sense of community and the feeling of neighbours looking out for each other.

And 39% are more in touch with friends and family, aided by the boom in video-chats.

More than 4,000 people were questioned across the UK for the YouGov poll commissioned by the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in partnership with a charity, Food Foundation.

On attitudes to food, around four out of 10 people are valuing it more – and cooking more from raw ingredients.

But the survey suggests those feeling fitter (9%) - and exercising more (27%) - are cancelled out by people exercising less (36%).
