This is a major point and I am surprised this does not often get discussed. How many chances should one get on a comeback? (perhaps the same point applies to new players but I am more keen to understand the benchmark for a comeback as some of these players work very hard)

Recently we saw that both Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal made comebacks in the Pakistan team but both of then were abruptly discarded after a handful of innings. Was that fair?

Now we are witnessing a Fawad Alam comeback. Potentially he will get 4 innings (or may be 2 if he is selected in only one test). Should he be dropped if he fails or persisted with?

It is about time that PCB sets a criteria so that all players are treated equally.

In my view a player should be given at least 6 innings to show what they are made of. But then what happens if that player does well in 2 innings and fails in 4 (reminds me of Asad Shafiq)...

What do you guys think?

There cant be a hard and fast rule as the player could hit that hundred or take a 5fer in the next game and kick off his career!

Definitely not as many chances as Umar Akmal or Shehzad

Give them 5-6 matches to prove themselves. If they don't, find better options

For Fawad Alam, 2 series are enough because the next two series are the easiest for him and in home conditions. If he doesn't perform consistently in these 2 series, then he should be dropped.

Giving players only one chance to make an impression before dropping them is terrible. Guys like Usman Salahuddin and Mir Hamza, one test match and they're gone. Agreed that they should at least be given a handful of matches to prove their worth, otherwise they're always gonna play in fear of losing their spot which isn't good for them or the team

A lot matters on team composition and a player's age. For Fawad, given the team's batting struggles and his age, two series should be enough to close the deal. If he cannot perform, it's case closed forever. It may sound harsh but he's officially 34 which means he can only play for Pakistan for another two seasons at most.

It depends upon their age.

Under 25 - two Test series
Aged 26-30 - one Test series.
Aged 31 or over - two Test matches.

Any Test cricketer aged over 32 should be retired permanently as soon as they fail in two consecutive Test matches.

Ha ha
By going this Rohit Sharma would have gone case.

There should be 10 innings for debut player,
And for comeback 4 innings best criteria

Ridiculous. Fawad deserves a full chance as much as Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali (team has been) who've hogged a test spot for years, what makes Asad and Azhar so special that they deserve persistent chances? Age is negligible if someone is still fit and making runs then you should be part of the playing XI.

I have to say i'll be gutted if Fawad doesn't get a chance in either this upcoming match or the series versus Bangladesh.
