What's new

How many of you have pets?

One of my cats, Sugar, passed away today. Had her for about 18 years. Almost my whole life

I am a big cat lover but I have never owned a cat. My mom doesn't want any pet in the house.

I wanted to bump this thread and just make everyone aware....

My beloved 2 and half year old German Shepherd passed away on Friday.
He had no health issues and choked on a rubber ball.

Despite everyone's best efforts he couldn't be saved and it's been utterly traumatic.

I'm mentioning it here, as well as on other platform, so that another poor dog and their family doesn't have to suffer like ours have.

Rubber balls, ones you can buy from most pet shops and designed for dogs, are actually extremely dangerous.

This is so sad. I can understand what you are going through right now. Our labrador retriever passed away in 2016, and it was so traumatic for us. My advise - wait for a few months, and then decide whether you want a new pet or not.

That is absolutely shocking

Never again my friend.
We lost the dog in my profile pick exactly a year ago.
But he was old and we had time to say goodbye.

The one that recently passed was so young and it came as such a shock.
My wife injured herself trying to save him.
This will haunt us for a long time.

As a family, I don't think we can put ourselves through it again.
But like they say.. "never say never"

Horrific.
We're in bits.

Rubber balls are so dangerous for dogs.
They become slippery with the saliva and can slide down the throat.

Everyone who has a dog should be so wary of this.

I have at times wanted to bring another puppy after the death of our Lab. My parents haven't allowed me. Specially my now deceased father was completely against it.

i'm sure your later father was a great man with a wise head.

Owning a dog is like adding another member to your family.
Only you get 8-15 years with them (depending on the breed and their health). Meanwhile the insurance, cost of food and the fact that you can't just go away for a few days on a whim has to be accounted for...
then you have the walks, come rain or shine and if they eat something that disagrees, you have to wake up in the middle of the night, put your clothes on and take them out, whatever the weather is.

So it's a huge responsibility.

Dogs entering US must be 6 months old and microchipped to prevent spread of rabies, new rules say

All dogs coming into the U.S. from other countries must be at least 6 months old and microchipped to help prevent the spread of rabies, according to new government rules published Wednesday.

The new rules require vaccination for dogs that have been in countries where rabies is common. The update applies to dogs brought in by breeders or rescue groups as well as pets traveling with their U.S. owners.

“This new regulation is going to address the current challenges that we’re facing,” said Emily Pieracci, a rabies expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who was involved in drafting the updated regulations.

The CDC posted the new rules in the federal register on Wednesday. They take effect Aug. 1 when a temporary 2021 order expires. That order suspended bringing in dogs from more than 100 countries where rabies is still a problem.

The new rules require all dogs entering the U.S. to be at least 6 months, old enough to be vaccinated if required and for the shots to take effect; have a microchip placed under their skin with a code that can be used to verify rabies vaccination; and have completed a new CDC import form.

We bit the bullet

I adopted a puppy from an animal rescue shelter, it’s missing an eye, looks disfigured facially and walks a bit funny, he’s a part of the fam now.

He is well loved by us.

He’s not so popular everywhere else though.

I take him to dog footy once a week, he scores all the goals, hanging in the box, but his team keep losing.

Rumour has it, his selfishness may have been responsible for some of his injuries.

But no matter what, we will blindly love my dog, he is our El Campeon and Numero Uno. He has some fans other then us, the other disabled kutheh from the shelter take a liking to him as well so at least he has some friends besides us.
