How should India punish countries that have spoken against them at the UN (Kashmir issue)

Napa

India plans to downsize Palm oil import from Malaysia.

Like I predicted, these comments were not going to go unnoticed and without a strong counter reaction from GOI.

Another insignificant market being put in its place.

Mahathir refuses to retract Kashmir statement despite Indian pressure

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has refused to succumb to Indian pressure for changing his stance on the Kashmir issue.

“We don’t give criticism to side with anyone, but we call for both parties to discuss, use arbitration or go to the court of law, not to resort to violence,” he said while speaking to the media at parliamentary lobby in Kaula Lumpur on Tuesday.

He also urged finding ways and means to sort out Kashmir dispute, saying that he had raised the issue with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi during their meeting in the Russian city of Vladivostok.

The Malaysian PM reiterated the Kashmir dispute must be resolved in accordance with the UN resolutions. “It is Malaysia’s policy not to resort to violence but to resolve issues through negotiations, arbitration and the court of law,” he added.

“Despite UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied. India should work with Pakistan to resolve this problem as ignoring the UN will lead to other forms of disregard for the UN and the rule of Law,” he said, Radio Pakistan report.

Mahathir had previously hit out at the Indian government over atrocities its committing in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir during his address at the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he called for settling the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan through peaceful means.

Following his address at UNGA, #BoycottMalaysia was launched by the supporters of nationalist Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, Mahathir said that the government had not received any response from the Indian government with regards to his UNGA address, Strait Times reported.

“So far I’ve not received any feedback. I had told Narendra Modi to contact me if he is unhappy or dissatisfied,” he said, adding that Malaysia has called both parties to discuss, use arbitration or go to the court of law, not to resort to violence.

Earlier, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah had said Malaysia would continue to play a proactive role in objecting any form of oppression regardless of religion or skin colour.

“Malaysia practises a non-aligned foreign policy, and wishes to befriend and do trade with all countries except Israel, but we have to make a stand on certain matters. For example, we spoke against the genocides in Cambodia, Rohingya as well as Jammu and Kashmir.

“Pakistani Prime Minister [Imran Khan] had contacted Dr Mahathir to ask for his views. In an international event in Russia, Dr Mahathir had met the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, and gave his views on the matter.”

When asked what the government is doing to resolve the Kashmir conflict, the minister said, “There were chapters in the recently-launched Foreign Policy Framework which refers to the fight to represent the oppressed, including in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir”.

Commenting on the UN Security Council’s closed-door consultation to discuss the Kashmir issue on August 16, he said since Malaysia was not a UNSC member, it had sought the cooperation of Indonesia to state Kuala Lumpur’s stance on the matter.

“We would communicate directly with Indonesia on matters pertaining to the Kashmir conflict discussed in the council,” said the minister, adding that OIC Contact Group meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 25 also took a strong stance on the issue.

“It has called for India to firstly, retract the revocation of Article 370 which has caused problems today. Secondly, repeal its emergency law, and thirdly, recall its soldiers from Occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

All this needs to be handled carefully. India too has IT professionals working in Malaysia who have been targeted before by the Malaysian government.

I am pretty sure the average Malaysian couldn't care less about Kashmir. Taking anti-India positions something Mahathir has been doing for a long time. Maybe it is personal, he is of partly Indian ancestry.

As for OIC supporting Malaysia's Kashmir stance, obviously that is wishful thinking. Wasn't Modi recently given an award by a Mideast country?

Mahathir is of course trying to get Indonesia to take the same position on Kashmir as the Indian threat is to divert its palm oil purchases to Indonesia. I don't think Indonesia will hurt itself economically just to bail Mahathir out, unless Mahathir is able to offer some economic compensation.

No doubt Malaysia has done very well economically under Mahathir, but it is still small enough for India to largely ignore. "However, Mahathir said that the government had not received any response from the Indian government with regards to his UNGA address, Strait Times reported." Seem like Modi doesn't have time for Mahathir.

Malaysia is relatively rich, but its industry is basically low-tech. Their most visible hi-tech firm is Proton, and it had to sell 49.9% to Chinese Geely a couple of years ago.

The thing about Malaysian hostility to India is that it is simply a product of Mahathir's personal desires. India can wait him out, he is 94 years old and will be gone in a few years.

they should invade malaysia. Small country, weak airforce, hardly any friends..India could conquer it in a day..then impose a curfew on KL..

It’s one thing to attack a neighbouring country that you border and another thing to attack a country across a body of water. Logistically a nightmare and India does not have the capability to do so. They will need transport amphibious vessels amongst other equipment. The US is a true super power capable of such an attack.

Mahathir targets Indian IT professionals, Air Asia gets thrown out of India. Malaysian airlines loses its overfly rules, no more visa free regime and i can go on and on.

Malaysia is a small country, with little influence. I have no issues with them siding with Pakistan at FATF. They can vote any side.

But if their interference in J and K goes unanswered, then tommorow every tom dick abd harry will start to believe that they can interfere in India's affair. Malaysia needs to be given a bloody nose.

Agree with you that there should be retaliation in some form, right now palm oil is enough. Certainly we want to not hurt people like Air Asia founder Tony Fernandes who are of Indian origin and haven't done anything against India.

It shouldnot be restricted to palm oil. Next should be electronics and then the visa free regime.

Apparently palm oil imports by India total over $3 billion a year, that is huge. The cancelled contract for naval ships has already cost Turkey about $2.5 billion.

If Turkey provided arms to Pakistan, we should look at various ways we could support the Kurds.

Good idea! As a patriotic Indian, I assume you are volunteering. I will ask my GOI contacts to buy you a one-way ticket to Kuala Lumpur. Need your full name and DOB for purchasing the ticket.

Please enlighten us how is Malaysia interfering in J and K? They have only condemned the human rights violations that are taking place on a massive scale in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir against civilians - there’s been numerous reports and articles in the international media from reputable broadcasters such as BBC, newspapers including New York Times, Independent, Guardian and others detailing the horrendous crimes being committed by the Indian armed forces against unarmed civilians including reports of torture, unlawful arrests, rape — and not to forget the same also being highlighted by human rights NGOs including Amnesty and U.N. itself , so are they all interfering or possibly doing propaganda on behalf of Pakistan on the orders of the ISI?

Like my fellow Hindu has just clarified, Guardian is not the voice of England.

England along with Donald Trump respect Indian nationalism.

Rather then pick up on one sarcastic comment (in this case by MP2011), why not actually comment on the article itself?

Perhaps you and your "fellow hindu" can share your thoughts on the actual shutdown, do you condemn it?

Thanks for setting me straight though.

Won’t retract Kashmir remarks; will study palm oil boycott by Indian traders: Malaysia PM

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Tuesday he would not retract his criticism of New Delhi’s actions in disputed Kashmir despite Indian traders calling for an unprecedented boycott of Malaysian palm oil.

The impasse could exacerbate what Mahathir described as a trade war between the world’s second-biggest producer and exporter of the commodity and its biggest buyer so far this year.

India’s top vegetable oil trade body on Monday asked its members to stop buying Malaysian palm oil after Mahathir said at the U.N. General Assembly last month that India had “invaded and occupied” Kashmir, a region also claimed by Pakistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government removed the long-standing autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir on Aug. 5, calling it an internal matter and criticising countries that have spoken out against the move.

“We speak our minds, and we don’t retract or change,” Mahathir told reporters outside parliament. “What we are saying is we should all abide by resolutions of the (United Nations). Otherwise, what is the use of the U.N.?”

The U.N. Security Council adopted several resolutions in 1948 and in the 1950s on the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, including one which says a plebiscite should be held to determine the future of the region.

Mahathir said Malaysia would study the impact of the boycott called by the Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors’ Association of India and look at ways to address the issue.

New Delhi has so far refused to comment on the trade spat.

“This is not the Indian government, so we have to find out how we can communicate with these people, because trade is a two way thing and it is bad to have what amounts to a trade war,” Mahathir said.

Malaysia’s exports to India were worth $10.8 billion in the fiscal year that ended on March 31, while imports totalled $6.4 billion, according to Indian government data.

Malaysian palm oil futures slipped on Tuesday over concerns demand would fall from India.

India was Malaysia’s third-largest export destination in 2018 for palm oil and palm-based products worth 6.84 billion ringgit ($1.63 billion).

Malaysia said last week it was considering raising imports of raw sugar and buffalo meat from India, in a bid to ease the trade tensions.

India, the world’s biggest importer of edible oils, also buys palm oil from Indonesia as well as soyoil from Argentina and Brazil, and sunflower oil from Ukraine.
