How will MS Dhoni be remembered as a cricketer?

MS Dhoni's No. 7 Jersey Retired, BCCI Informs Players Not To Pick Iconic Shirt: Sources

Paying a rich tribute to former India captain MS Dhoni, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the No. 7 jersey. The shirt became synonymous with Dhoni, who remains India's most successful captain when it comes to ICC events. While the great Sachin Tendulkar's No. 10 shirt was already retired by the Indian board, a decision has been made to add Dhoni's No. 7 shirt to the list as well, honouring the contributions the wicket-keeper batter made to the Indian team in the game, sources have told NDTV.

It is understood that the BCCI has told players in the Indian team that they can't wear No. 7 on their back while donning the Indian jersey, just like no one was allowed to pick the No. 10 shirt.

Even a report in the Indian Express confirmed that the No. 7 shirt is off the shelves for Indian players.

"The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni's Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni's T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can't get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers," said a senior Board official told Indian Express.

During his early days in the Indian team, however, pacer Shardul Thakur did wear the No. 10 shirt for a brief period. However, the shirt was retired after that much-talked-about episode. In the case of No. 7 shirt, the BCCI acted swiftly and took the number out of players' reach.

The BCCI official also confirmed that a total of 60 numbers have presently been allotted to the Indian team's players.

"At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don't give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from," said a BCCI official.

Not to take anything away from his stellar career and captaincy, but to me he's one of the most overrated players

I will not say that he is overrated. He is regarded as one of the best captains and wicket-keeper batters of all time.

One of the greats right. Won everything there is to win. Wc champions trophy and t20 wc.

Test number 1 as well for 1 or 2 years.

But those losses post 2011 hurt his test legacy a lot

2011 to 2013 was avdark period for him in tests. What is it? 10 losses and 1 win away from home?

This is a bad decision. No player is bigger than the game. Also many Sachin fans had no problems when Shardul wore no.10 jersey

He was good in limited-overs cricket, winning all three ICC events in that format.

He was shrewd too and ended many careers early. Khamoshi se kawaii dalne wala. :))

#OnThisDay in 2014, MS Dhoni pulled the curtains down on his Test career. The decision came out of the blue during India's Test series on Australian soil in 2014-15.

Cricket icon Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a criminal complaint against his former business partners in a sports firm for allegedly defrauding him of ₹ 15 crore. The complaint has been filed against Mihir Diwakar and Soumya Vishwas of Aarka Sports and Management Limited in Ranchi court regarding a 2017 business deal.

Mr Diwakar had reportedly signed a deal with Mr Dhoni in 2017 to open cricket academies in India and abroad in the cricketer's name. But, he allegedly did not stick to the conditions mentioned in the agreement, as per the complaint.

Aarka Sports was liable to pay the franchise fee and share profits in the ratio mentioned in the agreement, but all the terms and conditions were violated, it said. Mr Dhoni withdrew the authorisation letter from Arka Sports on August 15, 2021, and sent several legal notices but to no avail, it added.

The former skipper of the Indian cricket team, represented by his lawyer Dayanand Singh, has claimed that the firm has cheated him, due to which he has lost more than ₹ 15 crore.

The website of the sports firm, which has a huge photo of MS Dhoni as its cover image, claims it specialises in athlete and player management and also provides "top class consultancy".

Mr Diwakar is the managing editor of the company, as per the website which also says that Mr Dhoni is a mentor in the firm.

Navjot Singh Sidhu said during a program on a local sports channel:

"It really is a miracle what MS Dhoni has done. once you are not in the swing of things, you tend to lose out. you look at Dhoni, how many years he has not been in the swing of things, and he comes as if nothing has happened. therefore, this adds to his greatness and his mental fortitude."

MS Dhoni once again created history in the Indian Premier League 2025 clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday evening.

The 43-year-old now holds the record for being the first wicketkeeper to reach 200 fielding dismissals in the tournament’s history.
