"Huge responsibility on Azhar & I given that Pakistan has struggled to post big totals": Asad Shafiq

KARACHI: Senior batsman Asad Shafiq expressed the hope on Sunday that Pakistan would compete with Australia despite their wretched Test record Down Under.

Speaking to reporters during an open media session at the National Stadium, the 33-year-old right-hander said Pakistan may had not won any series in Australia but had opportunities from time to time to beat the Australians in their own backyard.

“The last time we were there Pakistan almost scored a famous victory in the day/night series opener in Brisbane,” Asad, who stood out in that game with a superlative career-best knock of 137, reminisced. “In the end we lost by just 39 runs, and if luck had sided with us, who knows the outcome of the last series would have been a different story.”

Pakistan, who were captained by current head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq, suffered a 3-0 whitewash during the previous tour in 2016-17 as Steve Smith-led side went on to win the remaining two Tests in Melbourne — where newly-appointed skipper Azhar Ali carried his bat in the first innings with 205 — and Sydney.

In fact, Australia had won each of the last four home series of three Tests against Pakistan beginning from 1999-2000 when Steve Waugh led them. In the subsequent rubbers in 2004-05 and 2009-10 Ricky Ponting captained the home team. Pakistan have only managed to defeat the Australians Down Under just four times, with their last success coming way back in 1995-96 when Wasim Akram skippered his side to 74-run victory.

“There is no doubt the conditions in Australia are generally foreign for any visiting team, more so for countries in our region. The pitches there are true and hard at most venues. The Gabba favours fast bowling and if our bowlers bowl in the right areas, then there is hope for us,” Asad said. “On the last trip, the bowling more than batting let Pakistan down because the wicket-taking option was almost negligible despite the fact we had several experienced bowlers.

“One can never foretell but I think the bowlers in the squad this time have potential to surprise the Australians. Nasim Shah, for instance, has the ability to rattle them and for someone just 16, it is amazing to see him generate fearsome speed as we found out during last week’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match in Faisalabad when the Sindh batsmen faced this youngster.

“Nasim troubled all of us with his speed and lateral movement throughout the game [during which he claimed nine wickets and almost sealed victory for Central Punjab]. I’ve no doubt in saying that he [Nasim] could be a X-factor for Pakistan in the upcoming Test series.”

Meanwhile, Asad — who has accumulated 4323 runs in 69 Tests at an average of 39.94 with 12 centuries and 23 half-centuries since his debut in 2010-11 — candidly admitted the batting responsibility on his shoulders have increased since the legendary Younis Khan and Misbah retired in 2017.

“Azhar and I are the most experienced batsmen in the Test side, and there are huge responsibilities on us to carry given that Pakistan have struggled to post big totals in recent times. Unfortunately, this is something we are still trying to rectify since Younis and Misbah retired,” Asad conceded. “One only can hope to succeed if everything goes well for you. The good thing is that we will go into the [Australian] series with fair amount of competitive matches since our domestic season is in full swing since the middle of September.”

Asad has to win a test for Pakistan at some point. That day night game was his moment and as usual he didn't take the team all the way.

I have no hopes of him in this series. Looking to more positive batsmen like Haris Sohail, Babar and even Imam to do well.

I don't have high hopes from Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq at all, both are gonna fail. Haris Sohail and Rizwan are gonna be our key batsmen.

Azhar might find his form back owing to his work ethic. But the sooner Asad Shafiq is dropped, the better. He is just way too inconsistent and fails just when you need him to stick around.

Guy averages 38 with the bat after playing for so long. People should lower their expectations of this guy.

Asad has been a passenger most of his career so can't see him doing much. Azhar is out of form so don't have high hopes there either. These guys are good at talking though.

Am sure Asad will score his usual nice 50 or 100 in a losing effort and fail in every other inns when runs are really needed.

I dont know why i feel this guy is under the pump alll the time in some way or another.

I expect atleast a ton from him considering his experience as a senior player.

Is he just realising that now?

How long have Pakistan been waiting for this guy to step up to the plate?

It's been 2.5 years since he keeps trotting out the same old cliche about 'Misbah and Younis have retired, we need to take over etc.'. It's about time he delivers or is given the boot, same for Azhar.

Lol Azhar and Asad will be saying the same stuff upon their retirement. Misbah did not need replacement as a batsman

These 2 Tests in Australia are huge for Asad.

If he fails, he needs dropping.

Same goes for Azhar...

He has done WORSE than Asad over the past two years yet no sign of ever dropping him...

Same goes for Azhar...

He has done WORSE than Asad over the past two years yet no sign of ever dropping him...

While Azhar has done worse but comparing both is like saying that Bevuma and Duplesis both had a poor last season but Duplesis had worse so he should be dropped. Both are not really comparable in terms of stature, Azhar has been the best Pakistani test batsman after Younus and Misbah in the last decade, so having worse average by 5-6 than Asad in last 11 matches shouldnt let people forget the fact that what he has achieved for Pak including a 300 in test cricket and 200 as an opener in Australia.

A guy averaging under 40 in test cricket is always gonna be more under scanner than a guy still averaging around 44 as the later one has had a much higher peak for his country.

Bro [MENTION=142432]Titan24[/MENTION] - check your PM please

I'm expecting performance from our batsman in this order.

Haris
Babar
Azhar
Rizwan
Asad
Shan

I don't know how this guy is still in the team!

Majority of games have been played in Asia and he has batted at no. 6 (reserved for inexperienced or A/R's), but still averages 38 - absolutely disgraceful.

Even Fawad Alam at the twilight of his career can do several times better.

Openers Abid Ali & Imam Ul Haq with Haris , Babar, Azhar, Asad & Rizwan
Bowlers Yasir, Shaheen, Abbas & Naseem Shah
12 man & Drinks ( Shan Masood)

Abid ali must needs to play and open with imam

Abid Ali
Imam
Azhar Ali
Haris Sohail
Babar Azam
Asad Shafiq / Shan Masood
Mohammad Rizwan
Yasir Shah / Kashif Bhatti (only one will play obviously)
Shaheen
Naseem
Abbas

Seems like they will go with this eleven

I would say Asad needs to perform or else he should be dropped, but that's been the case for so many series and he is not dropped.

It's funny how he lumps himself in with Azhar, as if they are one and the same and part of a package. They are not. And he should know that.

haris will struggle big time...starc was dropped in ashes and i desperately want him not to play against us as he will eat us alive

Can Asad softie Shafiq finally perform in a series and win us something?

These 2 Tests in Australia are huge for Asad.

If he fails, he needs dropping.
In the two years since they had to take on leadership of the batting group:

Azhar Ali, who is about to have his 35th birthday, has averaged 28 in Tests compared with 46 previously.

Asad Shafiq, who is about to have his 33rd birthday, has averaged 37 in Tests compared with 38 previously.

In what universe do you make Azhar Ali the captain when he is a failing has-been, but dump Asad Shafiq who is two years younger and whose output has barely changed?

Maybe because Asad's output wasnt good enough for a specialist batsman in tests to start with. An avg of 37-38 for a test batsman after almost 70 matches isnt good enough. Before people talk about his position they should know he was tried at no 4 too and he failed badly. He averages 38 and 28 at no 4 and 5 respectively vs around 40 at no 6.

Also saying output has barely changed and thus he should be the captain is like saying the Bevuma who averages 31 should have been the captain vs Duplesis in 2018 when Bevuma's output rather increased to avg of 42 while Duplesis was struggling with average in mid 20s.

Seeing as Pak have cocked this up with the team selection, we may as well set the lineup in the following order.

Shan
Imam
Haris
Azhar
Babar
Rizwan
Asad
4 quicks.

Asad should have been booted, I'm sure even with Pak's lack of batting prowess, there is someone out there who can do a better job or at least make some impact.

Kya bakwas hai. Austria pitches are F.L.A.T.
They have stop making these meek excuses and perform. This should be Asad and Azhar last tour if they can’t hack it. He is in poor form in domestic as well. Scoring the odd useless fifty

He is the captain - wont be dropped after just one series.

There is nothing worse than spending time and resources on something which should have never been done in the first place :)

His double and triple hundreds in the past don’t matter - you are only as good as your last few games.

Please, for god's sake. You are test match version of Umar Akmal at best. Good at making some 40-50s , 100s in almost losing cause, and when needed the most, you score 0. When I thought after WC , Mickey will clean the entire mess, we brought in Misbah who loves smelling garbage (harsh but this is what it is)

It seems as though every series is a big series for them and they produce the same average results.

Asad will do the usual 3 failures then a nice 50 or 100 in final inns to save his place. I doubt he will be dropped anytime soon.

I have full confidence on your ability Asad. You will not disappoint the fans and will do the usual nonsense batting which you been doing for few years now.:shezzy2

Shafiq's Test average in October 2016 was 43.84.

3 years later it's now 38.94.

That's a dramatic drop by any standards and shows his sharp decline as a Test batsman.

Not as big as Azhar Ali's. Atleast Shafiq passes the eye test and shows some potential, Azhar was a tail ender in South Africa

Both have been passengers and rode on the back of Misbah and Younis for too long.

Azhar Ali apparently is carrying a debilitating knee problem. It was the major factor behind his ODI retirement. You just have to observe his running in the field and between the wickets to notice that it is a problem. I wonder if that can also explain his decline in the last 2 years after the retirement of Younis Khan. If it is a problem and if he cant be the same player anymore, the PCB need to cut their losses

Asad doing well in the practice game - good for his confidence.

Good stuff today.

However, what really matters are the Tests. Turn it around there!

Agree, if Azhar can no longer perform due a to dodgy knee, then should get dropped immediately. Can't afford unfit players at the top level.

You have to wonder though what do the PCB medical staff get paid for?

Good to see he opened in the warm up game. Hopefully Azhar has seen sense and realizes he needs to open again.

Asad is a better test batsman than Azhar at this point and has done just enough to justify his place on the team.

I think PCB has made a blunder here. They should have gone with Asad as test captain.

Azhar should never play a test for Pakistan again after what he did in South Africa.

How clueless are you?

Remind me who is Pakistan's best batsman in AUS in recent times? Surprise! You had no idea about it.

Azhar had a marvelous tour last time but his batting has gone downhill in the last 2 years. It is only natural considering he's approaching 35 and way past his prime.

His problems are in the mind. He will never be able to stem a collapse, but with Shan, Azhar, and Haris coming before him - if they can collectively play out 20 or so overs, he will be able to do something.
Really should be dropped after this tour if he cant make a winning contribution.

Nonetheless, a welcome return to form - he didnt do much in the QA trophy.

Pakistan have struggled to put big scores only because you two have consistently failed to score any runs.

Shhh....don’t be so direct,.’

Azhar is the super star....he checks all the boxes....reason why he was made
Captain in 2016 despite Sarfraz being VC the entire time. Yes man, for Misbah and Waqar at the helm...he’s gonna be around for a while:. Only batsman to score a double at the MCG and lose
the game...

Good innings but a disappointing end. Hope he scores a ton again in Australia.
