Awais Zia is a hard-hitting left-hander who was selected in the Pakistan T20 squad to face England in 2012 after some strong performances for domestic side Rawalpindi Rams in the Faysal Bank T20 Cup, where he helped his side reach the final.

Zia played in all three matches in the T20 series against England but despite some lusty blows, he was unable to replicate the form he had shown in domestic cricket. However, he retains an aggressive streak in domestic T20s, with a strike rate of 131.

The 27-year-old's last outing for Pakistan was two years ago but he has continued to play first-class cricket on a regular basis, scoring over 3,000 runs in 53 matches at an average of just under 40.

He recently top-scored in the first innings of the four-day match, to help Rawalpindi win the final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy just one week ago. Zia came to the crease with his side struggling on 60/6 and accumulated a patient 70 before being the next man out, leaving his side on 199/7 having added 139 runs in for the seventh wicket partnership. The respectable first-innings score ensured the Rawalpindi bowlers were given a reasonable target to defend, before the batsmen capitalised in the second innings.

PakPassion.net caught up with Awais Zia to discuss the matches he played against England, his performance in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and his hopes of playing international cricket again.

PakPassion.net: You played three T20Is against England two years ago. Do you think you did yourself justice in those matches?

Awais Zia: I thought I played a bit hastily in the three T20Is I played against England and unfortunately, I couldn't perform the way I would have liked to. I couldn't adjust myself well there and played shots in a hurry as I didn't have the experience of playing international cricket.

Inshallah, if I get a chance now, I will perform much better. My form at that time when I was selected was very good and I am performing very well these days also. I am trying very hard, and am working on my technique. In first-class cricket, I have scored a lot of runs and my coaches, Sabih bhai and Wasim bhai, have guided me a lot. Inshallah, I will make a comeback soon.

PakPassion.net: It seemed like Steven Finn had a few things to say to you in those matches?

Awais Zia: When you step into the ground, you don't see who is bowling to you. You just have to play the ball on its merit. He (Finn) was representing his country and so was I. It is not difficult to play any bowler. It just depends on how confident you are when you are playing out there. I don't hesitate at all while facing any bowler in the world.

PakPassion.net: Do you think domestic cricket prepares Pakistani cricketers well for international cricket? How can it be improved?

Awais Zia: Yes, the players are working hard and the coaches are doing their best to prepare them for the harder format of cricket. There is a lot of talent there in Pakistan. It just needs to be exposed and Inshallah all the talented lads will get their chance. The players who have been getting selected in the international side have performed in the past to justify their selection.

Unfortunately, there is no international cricket here in Pakistan as the situation here is not good. Mr. Zaka Ashraf has done a lot for Pakistan cricket and since he has now returned, we can expect some changes in domestic cricket. It's not that our domestic cricket is not good, but there is always room for improvement. In the near future, the T20 tournament in Rawalpindi will commence and there is also the President's Cup final to come, so the players have a very good chance to impress the selectors by performing in these matches as these will be televised.

PakPassion.net: You are playing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy this season rather than the President's Trophy, why is that? What is the standard like?

Awais Zia: Yes, that's the case because a lot of our regional players opted to play for departments rather than for their region, so Sabih bhai asked me to play for Rawalpindi region season and due to him, I decided not to represent any department. I have performed well here and there is not a lot of difference. Those who perform in regional cricket get selected to play for departments. We are doing well these days and have defeated almost all departments - we overcame ZTBL and WAPDA and also led against NBP.

To be honest the standard of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is not the same as the President's Trophy, but there are a lot of good players who are playing regional cricket and as I said before, those players who do well in regional cricket get a call-up to play departmental cricket in the next season. It's a motivating factor for the players to perform and get a call-up to play for departments.

PakPassion.net: Who do you model your batting on?

Awais Zia: I haven't modeled by batting style on anyone else. In fact, I have modified it a lot and I am not the same hitter as I was some time ago. I have worked hard on my batting technique - My batting style is natural and now I am a much calmer player than before and don't try to slog every ball out of the park.

PakPassion.net: You've moved into the middle order for Rawalpindi this season, is that where you see your future?

Awais Zia: No, I will open the innings in the upcoming T20 tournament in Rawalpindi. I am batting in the middle-order in four-day cricket these days as the team requires me to do so. There are only 3-4 senior players in our team, including me, so we have to play according to the situation and have to carry the team.

PakPassion.net: Are there any bowlers in domestic cricket that have impressed you?

Awais Zia: In our region have two very fine bowlers. Nasir Malik is express and is the leading wicket-taker in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy currently. He is a very good seamer. Akhtar Ayub is another one to watch out for - He has done very well and is bowling in the range of 140kph. So, I believe these two bowlers have outstanding potential.

Raza Hasan of Sialkot also bowled very well to me so he, along with the bowlers in my team, have impressed me this season.

PakPassion.net: How important is it for the PCB to start up the PSL?

Awais Zia: Yes, that was very important, but unfortunately it never took place. If it happens in future, the players who are playing T20 cricket will get more opportunities to prove themselves. As more matches will be televised on TV, the players will be more encouraged to do well and perform. Also, it will be a big boost for cricket in Pakistan. We can prove to the world, by arranging the PSL here, that Pakistan is a safe country to play cricket.

The main priority should be to hold the PSL in Pakistan, but it depends on the PCB as to where they want to hold it. The PSL should be held wherever the players feel comfortable playing. If there is no possibility of it being played here in Pakistan, then it should be arranged elsewhere.

PakPassion.net: You're 27 now, do you think you can make an international comeback?

Awais Zia: Inshallah, why not? Age is a mere number for me. As long as you are fit and are performing, you can earn a recall to the national team. I am working very hard and have worked a lot on my fitness. My technique is much better now - My coaches and seniors have worked with me and I feel I am a better player now.

PakPassion.net: What do you make of Rawalpindi's chances at the next domestic T20 tournament, you seem to have a good team?

Awais Zia: Yes, we have a very balanced squad. Sohail Tanvir and Yasir Arafat will be back for us, which will give us a much-needed boost. We have Karachi, Multan, and the newly-entered FATA in our pool. We have a lot of players who have potential and who work very hard. Inshallah, we will win the T20 tournament for Rawalpindi.

I don't recall whether he was the same Zia who I caught in a T20 vs England a year or two ago but if yes, he better be calmer! Broad/Finn did him in nicely in that particular game.

was a little too over-ambitious in his debut series but there is no doubt he is a devastating T20 player, can play all the shots.

let's hope he has a good FBT20, am a big fan.

I don't care if he's calm or hyperactive. I just want to know whether he can now play on the Offside like a proper batsman. Last time I saw him, My GOD that was some hacky performance , could not even lay bat on ball whenever the ball was pitching outside off

Im suprised he was not named in the 30 man squad for the t20 world cup

The extra opener slot is pretty open right now

You sure? :yk

Very limited player and was found out pretty quickly in T20 international games, needs to seriously improve his game all around the wicket to earn a recall to the side.

He is a perfect example of our awful selections, really looked like He was swinging the bat on the leg side, and struggled to play a half decent stroke on the off side, this is where domestic coaching is so important recognising these hacks and then working to improve them, God knows maybe that short stint might have waken him up

The destroyer of Finn. Bring him in for world t20.

He was all boom boom in terms of the hype, even the Sky Sports team jumped on the Zia bandwagon of being Afridi mkII!

At least he admits there is a gulf in quality between Quaid-e-Azam and department cricket, but why wouldn't you play in the better division if offered a place?

I get that there's more playing time perhaps, but he's 27, not 23 and just starting. If he harbours any desire to play international cricket again, he needs to step it up. Not that he'd be anywhere near my radar though.

He is very ordinary player , not International material.

Imran Nazir is far better.

I think people are being too hard over him over those 3 matches. The pressure of playing at the highest level for the first time got to him. If he can improve his offside play and overall batting then maybe he can be considered for the T20 squad again.

I still remember his so called boom boom innings, full of inane and inappropriate shots but it was fun to watch.Despite his very poor start in international cricket,I would still encourage and give him another opportunity to prove himself.

Definitely deserves another go. After Shehzad, Sharjeel, and Shahzaib, this man is our best T20 opener.

Or is it just so that we could get ourselves entertained to the fullest if he comes off good. Mate we have to admit it players like Afridi, Awais etc even though technically extremely mediocre do bring a brand of cricket that, Pakistan as a nation, seeks day in day out. :D

Totally agree with you.The quality of players that Pakistan provides not only to Pakistan but to the whole world indicates how much abundant talent we have hidden in our country. The entertainment that our players provide us whether in the form of sixes or tuk tuk in spite of no international cricket at home is the best indication of the love of cricket in our country.

Definitely deserves another go. After Shehzad, Sharjeel, and Shahzaib, this man is our best T20 opener.

Frankly, if that is the case then it is a damning indictment of our dearth of quality openers rather than a reason for him to be praised. Certainly was an extremely mediocre batsman.

For his own betterment, He should start opening in FC and List A matches as well. Should also play departmental cricket from next year if he really wants to play for Pakistan again.

Best of luck to Awais for the future.

Awais Zia scored 108 of 164 balls, it's strange to see him not getting much traction in PSL.

62* at the moment in a massive run chase for Balochistan in game against KPK

Singlehandedly ended Finns career. Should have had more opportunities in t20s.

I watched him playing club cricket in the UK a couple of years ago - he was struggling against local club bowlers.

Although Awais smoked 7 Sixes today but that is also a fact that he cant buy 7 Runs at International level.

Nothing new for him in domestic, but too many technical deficiencies that we all have witnessed first hand.

Hes been tried and tested we should look towards new players

Another half century for Zia, Central Punjab bowling is pathetic or wicket is flat. Sums up our domestic system when leg side hacks like Awais piling up free runs.

Man of the Match for 56(43) for Balochistan today

Best batsman at the National T20 Cup – Awais Zia, 276 runs

Hopefully gets picked for PSL, he is a better t20 opener than the likes of Shan Masood - Salman Butt - Imam ul Haq.

Well done to him.

Maybe he has improved from heavily favoring the leg side.

Those three boundries to Wahab Riaz on extra point tells us that bloke has improved his offside game.
He is the Khurram Manzoor of Pakistan, beast in domestic, lame at International level. International level cricket requires a lot more that he has to offer.

He is the same trash. Don't guys remember the last PSL? Couldn't buy a run.

Very ordinary batsman.

Struggled against the likes of Steve Finn when he came up against England.

I saw him playing club cricket in the UK not so long ago and he still looked terrible.

God help us if guys like him are topping domestic tournament run charts. Where is our young batting talents ? Other than Haider Ali, I'm not really encouraged.

isn't Khurram Manzoor the Khurram Manzoor of Pakistan?

So he was best batsman in National T20 Cup, somehow manages to find a place in PSL 5 but at this stage it is difficult for him to score more than 15 runs just like Khurram Manzoor failed badly at international level. Non consistent player

If he opened in Tests, he’d score more runs than Azhar Ali right now.

68* in 39 balls - Awais doing his talent some justice today at the National T20 Cup

Batted better than he has recently. That was an excellent innings under pressure and when it looked like his team were gone.

Some fantastic shots on both sides of the pitch there

Quite a few big hitters coming out aren’t they on these roads but still feel it’s good to see Asif Ali, Haider and Kushdil perform need them to carry it to international too.

SIX against M hafeez and SIX against Junaid khan are proper cricketing shots on both sides :root

Asif ali is a domestic sensation but amatuer international player but the other 2 I agree

Awais Zia 118 for Balochistan vs Central Punjab in 2nd XI QeA, Round 3, Day 1

Welldone to him but he is a lost case now, no matter he tops the chart. We have younger and better player to be groomed.

Ofcourse, his chanes of making comeback in national team are finished as he is 34 years old officially.

Awais Zia 63* For Balochistan in 4th round of QeA20

Another ton by Awais 108 runs,Awais Zia’s century and Jalat Khan’s five-wicket haul put Balochistan in a commanding position against Northern on the second day of the non-first class match:zia

So Awais David Zia Warner released by Karachi Kings and placed in Gold category.
Interesting if Multan Sultan or Quetta Gladiators pick him as they have released Ahmad Shahzad and Multan needs a batsman...:zia

Once known as the Domestic Shahid Afridi, Awais Zia had faded away from the limelight. However, in the Ramzan Ghani Tournament 2024, he roared back to prominence by smashing an unbeaten 48 off just 18 balls, steering his team to victory over the opposition.

Now what happened to Awais Zia over the years?

Seems like he was too attacking for PCB hierarchy at the time?

Now what happened to Awais Zia over the years?

To bring Sharjeel Khan up PCB has ditched him. If he had been given as many chances as Sharjeel did so we would have had an established attacking batter to open for us now.

Saw him play in a few tournaments here and there in the USA these past few years

He was a tuller nothing more than that. Not a guy who can perform with consistency. Local Shahid Afridi means he was once in a blue-moon type player.
