What's new

"I am Abid Ali, let me be Abid Ali and please don't compare me with legends"

Finally makes sense why his helmet was coming off at the back of scoring 50 vs zimbabwe. He knew it’s unlikely to happen against better teams

This guy was topping batting charts in domestic cricket and the media kept the narrative that grave injustice had been committed against him. It just shows the poor standard of our domestic cricket which will not be fixed in one day

Continues to "un" inspire with his failures.

Not fit for purpose.

Time for Pakistan to move on.

His dismissal in the 2nd Test (first innings)

Actually he hasnt even been in amongst the top 10 batsmen in last 4 domestic seasons. Didnt play in 2020 as he was with Pak team and last substantial score was 249 in the first edition of new formed structure with flattest of wickets. In the two seasons before that he wasnt even in the top 10 in terms of number of runs.

Yes still statistically one of the better openers if we look at the FC averages but, not sure what management and selectors were expecting debuting him so late in his career when he is possibly past whatever prime he had.

As an example SA debuted Stephen Cook who had 48 FC 100s at 35 years of age, he scored 3 100s and 2 50s at an average of 33 in 11 tests. If he would have been younger SA would have probably given him more opportunities but, as he didnt have much of a future he was sidelined pretty soon.

Thing to note for Pak is when select a guy around mid 30s then unless he is exceptional you have to move on after some failures and invest in someone younger.

What is wrong with his technique? Are his feet glued to the ground? Can't he move them?

These both guys scoring runs in domestic cricket tells you a lot about the quality of the cricket at domestic.

By short leg standards that was a regular catch.

Doesn't look the most confident chap does Abid.

When the likes of abid ali and imran butt are dominant in domestic cricket it only shows the pitches are flat very little pace and bounce and the domestic level bowling must be club level at best.

We have really deteriorated in producing genuine quality fast bowlers who are above 5.10ft / 5.11ft in height .

A lot of the bowlers in domestic are 5.5 5.6 ft midgets.

23rd first-class century for Abid Ali in the Quaid e Azam Trophy match against Balochistan at Lahore today.

At the Gaddafi Stadium, (Round 3, Day 3 of QeA 2021) Abid Ali struck his 23rd first-class century as Discover Pakistan Central Punjab’s match against Balochistan headed for a draw.

Abid resumed the day at 12 not out in Central Punjab’s 37 for one and was still at the crease on 139 not out with his side reaching 281 for two in reply for Balochistan’s 472 for eight declared. Abid Ali has faced 243 balls and struck 17 fours and six.

Together with Azhar Ali (73, 177b, 7x4), Abid Ali added 169 runs for the second wicket, while his unbroken third wicket partnership with Mohammad Saad (45 not out, 6x4, 73b) has already produced 83 runs as their side are still 191 runs behind Balochistan.

He is really poor

I have seen enough of him to suggest that he is not good enough for international cricket so these domestic scores don't matter.

Enjoying himself now against Bangladesh in the 1st Test but start was a little iffy I think.

Approaching 50, helmet being loosened.

Abid ali demands respect but unfortunately he does not get it as people have there own agendas .

He is making hay in favourable condition and against weaker opposition whilst struggling in subcontinent conditions.

I am pretty sure that’s been the case for 80% of our batsman.

Especially our openers .

Abid Ali has the ability to score big and whether people like it or not he’s here to stay for the time being .

Abid Ali is not someone i would trust to open the batting in England, South Africa or Australia. It's a bit of waste to have him playing in the subcontinent and piling up cheap runs to pad out his average. If he was 21 I would say he he could develop, but he too old to start learning how to play fast bowling now. There is no upside in persisting with him. How confident would you be if was opening in Australia against Cummings and Hazelwood?

He's a flat track bully on low bounce asian wickets

If fakhar and imam had enough chances on those pitches they would cash out on 100s and do it much quicker with more entertaining shots .

Since Abid’s debut

Is there a stat to compare him with Babar in all conditions?

Are people still complaining about the only guy that kept our batting afloat? Papers never fail to surprise me.

I’m not a big fan but you need to give credit where it’s due.

Credit where it's due, he scored 133, the other 10 batsmen scored 154 combined.

Let's take a look at Abid Ali's Test record:

AGE 34 YEARS

He has played 15 Tests, and seemingly averages 47.72. But those numbers don't stand up to the slightest scrutiny:

275 runs in 2 Tests v Zimbabwe, average 275.00.
321 runs in 2 Tests v Sri Lanka, average 160.50.
133 runs in 2 Tests v Bangladesh, average 66.50.

So he is terrific against rubbish bowling attacks on dead wickets.

139 runs in 3 Tests v England, average 27.80.
76 runs in 2 Tests v New Zealand, average 19.00.
73 runs in 2 Tests v West Indies, average 18.25
33 runs in 2 Tests v South Africa, average 8.25

So in 9 Tests against decent teams, he has scored a pathetic 321 runs in 17 innings, and his real average against proper teams is actually a pathetic 18.88

He is basically the new Yasir Hameed.

Minnow basher playing well. Bad for Pak in the long run.

There is nothing stopping King Babar the ace of premier batsman to score a reasonable 100-200 runs against weak bowling. You struggle when the bowling is good, You cash in when the bowling is bad. Abid does this, maybe the others should too?

This is the problem with Abid Ali. He scores against the weaker teams creating expectations. He then has failed against all the better teams.

At 34/35 he has already passed his peak.

He is a very ordinary opener, but the truth is that he does smash minnows. Minnow bashing should not be discredited. What you don't want is to replace a minnow-basher ordinary opener with a completely ordinary opener that cannot even bash minnows.

So for what it's worth, have to stick it out with Abid Ali. However the other opener should be Imam-ul-Haq. Abdullah Shafique should be a number 3 batsman. There should not be any place for Azhar Ali at all.

He’s played all decent opposition once

People can improve given a second chance and with confidence to back it up.

You cannot judge a batsman on one series against better opponets and that too away from home. He has ability, strokes and temparement, his technique maybe a little suspect against very good bowlers but its not something he cannot improve the more he plays at highest sta dard.

I reckon that's a compromise for all the other times we got him out of a jam. He needed to step up and should be stepping up against better bowling attacks when they come over to us next year.

Get off your high horse and remember what Babar did last game against the WI, when Pak were left 2-3 in the 1st innings.

Abid owes the team this and should be coming up against better bowling attacks as well.

For once i am impressed with your numbers.

I will give credit where it is due but i feel we need to turn to someone else come next year's series against Australia/NZ/Eng.

Hope Abid recovers well. He has been shown to be an FTB and minnow bully. with next 4 test series in Asia he needs to score big, no excuses now or he should be dropped.
