"I am expecting more from Yasir Shah in this Test series against New Zealand" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed is confident that leg-spinner Yasir Shah and medium pacer Mohammad Abbas can combine to tame “tough” New Zealand in the first Test starting in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

The fast-rising Abbas took 17 wickets in a two-match Test series, including a ten-wicket haul at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, as Pakistan beat Australia 1-0 last month.

Abbas, who made his debut last year, has 59 wickets from his first 10 Tests and will be backed by the spin duo of Yasir and Bilal Asif.

Sarfraz said he expects more from Yasir, who managed just eight wickets against Australia.

“Yes, our bowling attack is good,” said Sarfraz on Thursday. “Abbas has been bowling superbly while Yasir didn't look as great as we had expected, but in this series I expect more from Yasir.”

Yasir has been a match winner on the neutral venues of United Arab Emirates (UAE) where Pakistan have been forced to play since a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team suspended international cricket back home.

He took 15 wickets in the 1-1 series draw against New Zealand in the UAE in 2014.

But Pakistan have not beaten New Zealand in a Test series since 2011, and Sarfraz is not taking them lightly.

“New Zealand are a good side and gave us tough times both in the Twenty20s and one-day internationals,” said Sarfraz of the preceding series.

Pakistan crushed New Zealand 3-0 in Twenty20s while their one-day series was shared 1-1 after the third match ended in a no result due to rain in Dubai.

Pakistan will resist the temptation of playing the newest pace sensation, Shaheen Shah Afridi, whose nine wickets earned him man-of-the-series in ODIs. Abbas is likely to share the new ball with Hasan Ali with Yasir and Asif assisted by Mohammad Hafeez in spin.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who returns to the squad after missing the third one-day with a groin strain, hopes his team adapt fast.

“Obviously, coming into Pakistan's home series there is a lot of work to do in terms of the overseas sides adapting to the conditions as best as they can,” said Williamson.

“I think it's important that we adapt with this inexperienced side that we have come here with and look to learn as we can and do that quickly because we want to be playing our best cricket under these conditions.” Williamson admitted the threats from Abbas and Yasir.

“They both are outstanding bowlers and bowling well for a long time. Abbas, ever since he entered international cricket, is bowling superbly around the world,” said Williamson.

New Zealand are likely to hand a debut to left-armer Ajaz Patel, who is set to partner either off-spinner Will Somerville or leg-spinner Ish Sodhi. New Zealand also have a strong pace attack with Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Matt Henry to chose from.

The second Test is in Dubai (November 24-28) and the third is in Abu Dhabi (December 3-7).

Sarfaraz may be saying that about Yasir but he will be quietly hoping that Abbas delivers another block-buster which could really be great for the SA series.

Yasir had a very ordinary series against a weak bowling line up so we are all expecting better from him. Pakistan will need it!

I hope both Yasir and Abbas do well.

I don't see Yasir getting a place in the Playing XI during the SA tour, if he doesn't do well here.

NZ play spin better and more patiently compared to the aussies so Yasir is going to have his work cut out even more this time around

Yasir looked short of match practice agsinst Australia.

I expect NZ batsmen to be better prepared than the Aussies though.

Naturally they have had the T-20 and ODI series to acclimitize. I believe all touring teams should play these meaningless T-20 and ODI series before the test matches to give themselves a better chance of acclimitizing better in addition to arriving in the country in advance and playing a few practice games.

I wanna see yasir the way he bowled in the last 20 mandatory overs of the first test as if his life was on the line. That bowling had some serious bite in it. I guess he thought AU would be serving their wickets in a plate in the series.

Latham and Willimason would be big obstacles for Yasir. As far as I remember they also did last series at UAE as well.

Sarfraz should learn to hold a bat before he guns for Pakistan’s best player in tests for the past 5 years.

Guys useless in every format. Just look at his average from the last few years.

He’s a tail ender.

Very unlikely Yasir 'll do well.

It 'll be depending on Abbas and Bilal(because of Bounce) Yasir 'll be played with ease. NZ batsmen 'll do well.

We need to look for replacement asap regardless how he does in this series. Mickey don't seem too keen to look for spinners. He is obsessed with pace attack:sanga

Yasir's effectiveness has diminshed recently and I don't know what. There was a time he could bowl out an opposition for fun. Now he is easily read by even the most ordinary batsmen. He still bowls the odd jaffer but its nowhere near his peak powers.

I hope everyone in our team does well so we can win the series. NZ have a pretty strong lineup with only Raval, Grandhomme and Nicolls being a bit inexperienced.

I feel like the Kiwis will play him a lot more better. Would have also liked to see Zafar Gohar given a chance in this test series.

We need Yasir to fire , if he doesn't we are in trouble. Don't see Asif running through NZ line up featuring Kane ,Taylor ,and Latham.

Should have picked another spinner.

He did well against Aus, had an average of 17. So deserves another series. No point dropping him.

Here is a breakdown of his career. Outside of 2014 and 2015 he’s a tail ender. His test career has been In a decline for years and years . Only in 2014 he did well and that’s not taken into account the opposition. It’s gonna fall into the 20’s average next.

After the World Cup. He’s gonna he dropped in every format mark my words.

This is more like a wishful thinking. I understand that age is also not on his side and he is not a natural athlete. He might not be playing tests in 2-4 years and most keepers retire in late 30s however, he might be still captaining our T20 side and/or ODI side.

As far as his average in tests is concerned, as long as he maintains it near 35-40, PCB would be happy to continue with him since there is NOT ONE proper replacement for him in the domestic cricket. IN LOIs as of now, his only competitor is Rizwan who has not set the cricket world on fire yet. He is a natural keeper but I have seen him dropping catches as well which is the reason why PCB is not fully sold on him. You are making prediction based on what?

My prediction? Uh I’d say his last 20 odi innings. His poor keeping. His odi record against top sides.

What more do you need

Fakhar Zaman and the bowling unit won it.

Hold long are Pakistan gonna milk this cow?

One win and that nullify a all our loses to the top teams. This is the mentality that stops us progressing

Has Sarfraz seen at mirror himself? Pak fans have been expecting more from Sarfraz for quite some time but he has failed to deliver

Looking at progress so far seems spinners have work to do

Good to see Sarfaraz's expectations being met

My prediction? Uh I’d say his last 20 odi innings. His poor keeping. His odi record against top sides.

Do you have any good replacement in mind before getting him kicked out? Do NOT tell me that it is Rizwan because he ain't or else PCB would have done it.

Sarfaraz was excellent against Australia in test series, but he alone can't be expected to bail out your batting all the time. You people are lucky to have such a strong keeper and a batsman!

Yasir doing his bit, but he is no more a full ledge match winner, like before. He needs more guidance and help from the captain, coach. Also pak should appoint a spin bowling coach,
