Mickey Arthur on Day 1 of the Adelaide Test:
"I thought Pakistan were ragged in the field, your 3rd and 4th bowler have gone for 170 in 27 overs when you've picked only 4 bowlers. They didn't exert any control and never built any pressure, it was a poor day all around for Pakistan"
"Shaheen Shah Afridi looked good. Abbas has gone at under 3 giving an element of control, but he didn't look like getting a wicket and didn't attack the stumps, but he controlled the game to a point. Musa, disappointing. He's 19 so it's a learning curve but it's tough to learn in Test cricket, there nowhere to hide. Yasir was disappointing, his plans were wrong, bowling at Warner's pads with men back. He never applied any pressure and took LBW and bowled out of the equation. It was just so disjointed"
"I was bemused that Pakistan would have even thought of bowling first, luckily they didn't win the toss. You can not think about bowling first at Adelaide, I can't believe that crossed their minds"
"They were bowling with 2.5 seamers to be honest and their gun bowler in Yasir Shah didn't get it right. That meant that they had to bowl part timers, and they aren't going to get you wickets. This is Test cricket, this is why I keep harping on that they have to play 5 bowlers. Otherwise you're going to get exposed in these conditions. To win Tests, you need to take 20 wickets otherwise you won't win. I can't see Pakistan getting 20 wickets in these conditions"
"Shaheen is a whole hearted guy, he's not the best fielder but he gives it his all, he had a poor day in the field today. The soccer skills are horrendous, but I think we should get him partnering Lacazetter up front for Arsenal! He's a whole hearted trier, I like the fact that he could laugh at himself. It wasn't good enough, he knows that and it'll hurt him, he'll train hard"
"Shaheen was the best bowler without a doubt, he hit the areas well and troubled the batsmen, he bowled some good short balls and his pace was up there"
"The bowlers' pitch map, despite the left hand and right hand combo at that time, looks like some spray paint up against the wall. Those balls should be in a far more concise area, it's all over the place. Normally you get a fairly good grouping and bouncers. That's just way too many in poor areas and hence the score"
"It's hard to criticise Musa, it's his first Test and he's a young boy making his debut and I think he's going to be very good but that's not good enough for international bowling. As an international bowler, the expectation is you can build some pressure, you find your length, you find the length where the ball will hit the top of off, you pepper that length and use your bouncer and build some pressure. That is far too scattered, he can't build pressure, he's giving width, his lengths are indifferent and he's going at 6/over. A nightmare for the captain since he's got to get his overs from somebody else"
"Pakistan are going to have a serious discussion about their tactics and plans, the only way back is to get wickets otherwise it will drift away. We saw it drifting away in the 2nd session where they were defensive, they started it with a part-time bowler when it was their best opportunity to take wickets"
"They have to give Yasir the license to take wickets, he's going for runs anyway. Give him an attacking field and let him bowl the attacking, today he bowled a very defensive line. Let him attack and let's have Shaheen Shah Afridi come in and attack. Then you have Abbas, Iftikhar or whoever, bowl tightly and stop the game from one end. Otherwise they will sit back tomorrow and wait for a declaration, which will come when it's dark. Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc will come running at them with a brand new pink ball under the lights and that won't be good"
