"I could have taken some incorrect steps but my wife & friends stopped me" : Mohammad Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez speaking at end of Day 1:

"I am so happy, I tried my level best in the last couple of years to get back in this format"

"So happy that I got a chance to play in this team after waiting a long long time for that"

"I am really happy to something good for the team"

"We've been playing in the UAE for the last 10 years so we know the conditions well but at the same time, you need to do the basics right"

"I am very happy to get my first hundred in Dubai"

"No, there was no fear at all because whatever it is, it is; I always back myself and when the time is right, I will perform to get back into the Pakistan team"

"There was no fear because I prepared myself very well"

"The whole team has given me a lot of confidence during the practice sessions we had together"

"As a senior player, I wanted to do well in this series and it started well and I am very happy about it"

"I was looking forward to the challenge; as you know, I was the 18th member of the squad who was added later after initial squad announcement"

"I had done well in domestic and I was expecting myself to be included in the team; I was prepared for that and very much in a positive frame of mind that I am going back into the team and would do my level best to perform"

"Mitchell Starc really challenges you a lot during your innings and he did that today even when conditions were very tough for a fast-bowler to bowl well"

"Pitch was getting a little bit slower [towards end of the day]; there was a little bit of moisture in the morning but we managed it well"

"Imam played exceptionally well and gave me a lot of confidence from the other end"

"We are still happy as a team as we have 250 on the board and if we can get another 200 runs in the first innings then we will have a better chance to bowl with our spinners"

"We have Yasir Shah and a debutant, Bilal Asif, who is a wonderful bowler so we are backing ourselves to get 450 in first innings and putting more pressure on Australian batsmen"

"I have always believed that there will be a time when things will improve for you and you just need to wait for that time in a positive manner"

"In the recent past, I had some problems with my career and I was thinking about taking some incorrect steps which I was stopped from taking"

"When I was not selected for the Asia Cup, I wasn't mentally ready for that. It was at this point that I could have taken some incorrect steps but my wife and some of my friends stopped me"

"I was very disturbed at that time but I still believe that Allah SWT is the best planner"

"This was the place I was meant to make my return, else I would have been doing something else"

"Bowling has always helped me in my career and I am very confident when I am able to rely on my bowling"

"The pitch is slowing down and the nature of the pitch in Dubai is such that its very difficult to play spin on 3rd and 4th day"

"Younis Khan to his last innings had to prove that he was a good player so this is how it works in our culture as you have always have to prove yourself"

"Your critics challenge you to do good performances, as do people who are just waiting for your bad performances"

"Allah SWT has been so kind that whenever I need it most, I get special help from HIM"

"Australians bowled with a good plan all day, sometimes they attacked and sometimes we counter-attacked"

"I feel that we won the day as we played good cricket"

"Although we lost 3 wickets in the last session, I do believe that we achieved our target for the day"

"Any player wishes that when he ends his career, he ends it with dignity"

"My first priority is to play for Pakistan and apart from that there are many other options in today's cricket"

"I will continue to play for Pakistan until there is a competitive spirit in me and I want to leave with dignity from cricket"

"Like Mitchell Starc showed, you need to have pace behind the use of reverse swing"

"We have Wahab Riaz in our side and Mohammad Abbas who is the best bowler in Test format, so we have what we need"

His opportunity to hit back at his critics today.

Hafeez is really blessed with all facets of the game and life.

Its sad we can't produce any decent batters we have to rely on this 36 year old substandard player.

soo fed up with Akhtar's ego

It was a pleasant come-back innings. However like typical Pakistani fans we shouldn't alow one good innings out of 20 to be enough. I am the biggest doubter of Hafeez. Especially in LOIs. And I still believe Hafeez can't just walk back into the ODI side. Unless he can bowl on consistent basis without being reported for his action, in addition to a solid batting performance. We are not spoilt for choices and have little time to experiment till wc19. If he can find his mojo that would be quite good for us.

Meanwhile let's see how he goes from here still plenty of innings to come in this series alone.

In the UAE many PAK batsmen will pile on the runs as misbah and yk did. Asad and azhar are also masters in it from the current team. Imam will score big in the UAE as well. Its away from UAE where we need the batsmen to stand up. In that facet Hafeez is the worst ever from PAK.

Hafeez should be a guarantee for odi cricket whether it be 20/20 or 50 overs. On flat decks he is probably our most fluent batsman

Unless we find a reliable allrounder for the top 5, Hafeez will keep making a strong case of his inclusion in LOI team. What I don't like is his ego, he could have become a much better player but sometimes he bats way too selfishly in LOI's but he is not the only one in our LOI team who does that.
Although I would not be inclined on including him in SENA Tests. He is invaluable for Asia plus WI and Zimbabwe.

Another depressing thing is there is no talk if retirement with him once he is in the team. It's just go back to domestic and perform.

In other countries they would be considering retirement for such players.

Hafeez still remains the best all-rounder in Pakistan right now. And top 5 all-rounders in all of Pakistan cricketing history.

He was a good selection for this series as we simply need to win test matches in the UAE & not like Sri Lanka last year.

Say what you say, but with Hafeez on flat tracks, our chances of winning increase.
He has brilliant ODI record in the UAE.
Could have been the difference in Asia cup solely because he is a beast on flat tracks and also a very good player of spin.
I just wish the team and he himself realise how much value he can bring batting at 6 as an all rounder.

Kadar, Mushtaq (M), Imran, Wasim and then Hafeez at 5......

Razaak and Azhar ( M ) at 6 and 7

In true Pakistani style, all and sundry trying to claim the credit for Hafeez's 100.

What’s new , my grandma would have scored runs on this road. How Hafeez would do in SA and England we all know . Styne must be happy Hafeez is getting back to Pakistan team .

Except if your a senior. A comeback always round the corner.
Senior/ experience is the keyword in PAK.cricket.

He'll go back to considering those "incorrect steps" once he travels to South Africa and reverts to batting like a tail-ender.

Nothing new here, the world likes winners and not losers. We are all guilty of this

“I was mentally disturbed after being dropped from the Asia Cup team,” said Hafeez of last month's axing from the one-day side.

“I could have taken a drastic step but I was stopped by my wife and then Shoaib Akhtar phoned me as well.” Hafeez, who also did not play in any of the five one-day internationals in Zimbabwe in July despite being in the squad, hailed his teammates.

“I could have been doing something else (had I retired),” said Hafeez after putting on a solid 205-run opening stand with Imam-ul-Haq who made a career best 76.

“But probably this was the place where I had to stage a comeback. When I came back in the team all the players welcomed me and gave me confidence and that increased my inner energy.”

Hafeez was dropped from the Test side after faring poorly in the first three matches of Pakistan's series in England two years ago.

“I am very happy after this hundred. I tried my level best in the last couple of years to get back into this format and I am so happy to get a chance after a long time.

“I had no fear at all. I really backed myself and I knew that whenever it is the right time I will perform.”

Had he said it if Hafeez had gotten out on zero?

Well done to Hafeez for that comeback hundred. Just on a lighter note though, Dale Steyn will be jumping up with joy with the prospect of bowling to him in couple of months time :).

Its a tragedy with Pakistan cricket that we keep calling back this mediocre cricketer, after 16-17 of his failure.

Hafeez seems like a decent chap, whatever may be the opinions of his usefulness to the team. Also, his response to Steyn laughing at him was quite dignified. So from a human perspective, it is good to see him do well.

See you in South Africa

Here's hoping Steyn is ready to take the punishment.

My guess is Hafeez would remain classy and won't be pulling patronizing faces after creaming him again and again through the covers.

Ugh.

I don't like his EGO. Be humble. These were the easiest batting conditions!

Tweet has been deleted. Strange.

He’s only bowled in 43 Tests. And he bowls only 10 overs per innings on average

It just reflects lack of confidence of the skipper on bowler Hafeez and the reason for that is he hasn't got wicket taking capability in tests.

He better get ready for some harsh questions now....

Good decision as now names for T20I side!

Just shows how stupid the Pakistan selectors are. He has now been selected for the T20 side based on that century. Seems there is no way to get rid of Hafeez. He is Pakistan's own man of all seasons.
