"I don’t understand why you have to eat things like bats" : Shoaib Akhtar angry at the Chinese

This is so untrue lol...

The SARS outbreak was also the result of bats at a wet market...

Live animals are literally stacked in cages on top of each other...and end up sharing blood, excrement annd pus...which helps viruses jumping from one animals to another...

These markets like Wuhan stock wildlife like bats...

Poor peasant households chose to farm wildlife to make a living and the Chinese government encouraged them to do so...encouraged them to breed wildlife for human consumption...it also encourages trafficking of endangered animals...

SARS was caused by one of these wet markets...and the Chinese government banned these wet markets...but then decided a few months later to remove the ban...

And they have marketed these animals as having properties such as tonics, sex enhancement, disease fighting etc...ie absolute ** to increase sales...

Shoaib is wrong when he laments the Chinese for eating bats...it's actually just peasants who farm this wildlife and rich chinese people who purchase this wildlife...it's an industry for the elite just like ivory is...so even the eating of bats is a minority pursuit...

They have as it stands banned the wet markets again...but when this outbreak is over we will see if they actually do the right thing and put the needs of their majority population over the needs of their elite...

If they don't ban these markets permanently then we will another flu again...

But when the government would prefer to blame the USA and arrest whistleblowers then frankly I have little faith in them not shafting us again....

What benefit would they get from allowing such conditions to arise again? Isn't it going to play havoc with their economy to have to shut everything down?

Typical that all the snowflakes liberals and SJWs will be triggered by Shoaib's comments. These liberals and SJWs are some of the biggest problems in the world today. For these people, everything is racist, everything is sexist, everything is homophobic. I can't stand these over sensitive snowflakes.

China and the Chinese people deserves all the criticism and abuse for Covid 19. Their disgusting eating habits is the reason why this virus exists and caused deaths of so many people. They deserve all the hate. I couldn't care less if someone listens to Akhtar's video and decides to abuse a Chinese walking down the street. I couldn't care less.

I don't normally agree with Akhtar, but I definitely agree with him on this.

But then who knows?
May be the Chinese people look at us as stupid people who eat disgusting foods like beef, mutton and chicken?

They will be like, "Eewww who eats this disgusting proteins like beef and mutton chicken? Talk about the tasty live baby mice, bat soup, uncooked monkey brain, live centipedes, yum yum".

Sometimes you gotta play the role of devil's advocate.

But lol at Akhtar - he spoke his heart out and perhaps presented the general notion of many around the world.

That's my question too...but it certainly didn't stop them after SARS...they simply unbanned the wet markets and it was business as usual...and here we are again...hopefully since this has been more serious they might actually take some responsibility...

It's the fact that they are trying to say the US military caused Corona which doesn't reflect well...its not the fault of their ridiculous wet markets and farming of wildlife but it's the US...

or he just doesn't want to lose on millions in endorsement deals with chinese phone companies? Shoaib Actor is all about the money.

More like what i said.

Believe me the Chinese embassies are very active. Anyone making negative comments or criticizing China/Chinese regime is quickly made to delete the stuff.

I dont know why many here blame akhtar for pleasing indians lol.why would indians be happy for what he says about china?

I think most citizens form virus affected countries at some degree blame china.
As many in pakistan right now blames iran for underreporting it.

Ofc we sympathize to chinese for thier loss but they do practices that need to be stopped.
As of now its not about feeding hungry people anymore, nor there should be cultural issues in banning wet markets.

China has already banned many cultural practices since its communal regime.and this one needs to be done for the sole purpose of thier own citizens first.

As for blaming the chinese,
If you were to defend them sayingonly some eat it ,so should there be no protest against those who do when the world suffers?those who eat are ofc chienese, and the chinese governmemt is a bigger culprit here.

If this were the first time then its ok but it isnt, the world must protest once this is done and dusted.

Lol at the brainwashed liberals getting mad here. These dirty food eaters need to change their eating habits. Disgusting most of the crap they eat.

As always, Shoaib making some controversial statements for some easy clout.

Is he wrong?

These liberals even get offended when a person says fat people should lose weight

Do you support this type of censorship?

More like what i said.

It's not really "censorship", more like the chinese embassy contacted the Pakistani govt and they told them how they didn't appreciate Shoaib's sinophobic and racist rant against them and he realized this wasn't good for Sino-Pak relations.

"These liberals" are your allies, you're a minority in the UK. How would you like it if a famous white person insulted your race and dietary habits? Shoaib's video violates youtube guideline and this would usually result in videos getting demonetized.

Liberals get offended by everything. Blaming China for the Covid 19 isn't racist, when they are responsible for it.

well my dietary habits are not causing worldwide lockdowns.

China's caused at least 2 major plagues in the last century.

That was Shoaib's opinion and they don't violate youtube's guidelines. as long as he's not threatening physical violence, his right to free speech has to be upheld

People are linking it to bats but there is no proof.Chinese have to stop eating bats and other revolting food.I have asked Chinese people why they eat wild animals, insects etc.Their answer is that in the past there were many famines in China and people started eating whatever they could find. They got used to it.China is not as poor as it used to be so they should stick to proper food .There is a reason why Islam and Judaism have strict dietary laws.

But there must be a reason for why China has been the country of origin for 2 major outbreaks in the last century (The Spanish Flu and now this)

I don't support the liberals. I just despise them less than the conservatives but that doesn't mean i like them

Same here. Both Conservatives and Liberals are undesirable. It is just that Liberals are lesser of the two evils and it is why some of us vote for them. It is more of a strategic reason rather than actual loyalty.

From my experience, Liberals are worse than Conservative. They are easily offended by everything, that's why I slightly prefer Conservatives over Liberals.

Subtlety and nuance is important.

Criticism of shoaib ranting this way is not the same as giving Chinese a free pass on everything.

Yet if we take a leaf out of Shoaib's book and attack Hindus-Muslims/Indians-Pakistanis using broad stereotypes, you will see a totally different reaction.

Then no one will say call a spade a spade. :))

It's not a Conservative vs Liberal thing.

It's about how we convey something that makes the point firmly without turning it into an environment where a community is bullied.

Interesting information. Never knew about these peasants breeding wildlife for money.

While Shoaib is being overtly racist and its not surprising from an uneducated olaf like him, but it is also a fact that Chinese diet is comprised of many animals/things that are not fit for human consumption.

To give you an example in the city of Toronto shark-fin soup is banned. There is a street called Steeles that forms the northern boundary of the city, on the North side of the street the suburb of Markham starts which is within the Greater-Toronto-Area but has it's own council/mayor. So right on the northern side of Steeles there is a large Chinese restaurant that proudly sells shark-fin soup, since Markham is predominantly Chinese and hence the soup is not banned there. Also at the same restaurant you can get other assortment of gross cuisine such as chicken feet or pigeon heads etc etc.

I rarely visit Markham (there is nothing exciting there anyway) and now I have one more reason not to visit it.

Canada should ban these foods. I hope Trudeau will do the right thing.

You mean enforce it, Shark fin is already banned. They even banned the import, export last year.

I think people are not realizing a key element here. It’s not what you are consuming or a debate on whether a particular animal is fit for consumption or not. You can eat bats, jellyfish.. whatever.

But a few things to keep in mind:

1) its cleaned properly and cooked properly and is not rotten.

2) you cannot keep certain livestock (or even dead animals) in close proximity to each other.

All living organisms carry certain bacteria or viruses which may not be harmful to them but of passed on to other species, can be devastating. They can kill that species or mutate into something totally different.

Point#2 is where Wuhan created this massive disaster. They had animals of all sorts piled on top of each other. Dead/alive whatever.. and that’s when some virus transferred between species (bat to snake or whatever) and eventually to human. Now it can mutate rapidly as well and it’s going to be difficult to model its behavior because it has been introduced to an alien environment and it is not in its native ecology anymore.

Wet markets are simply a bad idea. That’s why in the west, everything is so regulated and monitored. You can’t have certain animals in proximity to certain others. In mostly Muslim countries, this is not an issue because we don’t eat lots of different kinds of meat but it’s potentially a world ending risk threat in other states where people are flexible and there is a huge and varied demand and little regulation.

So with Trump now openly calling it the Chinese Virus, is Akhtar also justified in blaming Chinese?

100%

Just look at how this has ruined so many lives. The sad thing is that from now on, any virus will require complete lock down in the early stages to tackle it.

As I have said before, Akthar can be crude and doesnt think before he says but in this instance he is a 100% spot on

Videoing vlogs comes with a responsibility You are directly influencing your followers sometimes millions of people hence you have to be careful with the type of language and message you potray

Akhter shouldve put his message across a lot better Yes hes an uneducated loaf but surely hes been around long enough to know that an important topic such as this should be dealt with carefully rather than his usual "bull in a china shop" approach

Very true.

Sensitivity was never Akhtar's strength.

These videos by so many Pakistani cricketers lack insight and a sensible approach.

Well KP backs Dr Akhtar.

Is there any confirmed evidence of this?

It’s due to hygiene rather than diet. The wet markets need to be heavily regulated.

MERS is linked to camels and drinking camel urine. So, we can throw shade in every direction.

Reclusive, nocturnal, numerous -- bats are a possible source of the coronavirus. Yet some scientists concur they are not to blame for the transfer of the disease that's changing daily life -- humans are.

Zoologists and disease experts have told CNN that changes to human behavior -- the destruction of natural habitats, coupled with the huge number of fast-moving people now on Earth -- has enabled diseases that were once locked away in nature to cross into people fast.

Scientists are still unsure where the virus originated, and will only be able to prove its source if they isolate a live virus in a suspected species -- a hard task.

But viruses that are extremely similar to the one that causes Covid-19 have been seen in Chinese horseshoe bats. That has led to urgent questions as to how the disease moved from bat communities -- often untouched by humans -- to spread across Earth. The answers suggest the need for a complete rethink of how we treat the planet.

Bats are the only mammal that can fly, allowing them to spread in large numbers from one community over a wide area, scientists say. This means they can harbor a large number of pathogens, or diseases. Flying also requires a tremendous amount of activity for bats, which has caused their immune systems to become very specialized.

"When they fly they have a peak body temperature that mimics a fever," said Andrew Cunningham, Professor of Wildlife Epidemiology at the Zoological Society of London. "It happens at least twice a day with bats -- when they fly out to feed and then they return to roost. And so the pathogens that have evolved in bats have evolved to withstand these peaks of body temperature."

Cunningham said this poses a potential problem when these diseases cross into another species. In humans, for example, a fever is a defense mechanism designed to raise the body temperature to kill a virus. A virus that has evolved in a bat will probably not be affected by a higher body temperature, he warned.

But why does the disease transfer in the first place? That answer seems simpler, says Cunningham, and it involves an alien phrase that we will have to get used to, as it is one that has changed our lives -- "zoonotic spillover" or transfer.

"The underlying causes of zoonotic spillover from bats or from other wild species have almost always -- always -- been shown to be human behavior," said Cunningham. "Human activities are causing this."

When a bat is stressed -- by being hunted, or having its habitat damaged by deforestation -- its immune system is challenged and finds it harder to cope with pathogens it otherwise took in its stride. "We believe that the impact of stress on bats would be very much as it would be on people," said Cunningham.

"It would allow infections to increase and to be excreted -- to be shed. You can think of it like if people are stressed and have the cold sore virus, they will get a cold sore. That is the virus being 'expressed.' This can happen in bats too."

In the likely epicenter of the virus -- the so-called wet-markets of Wuhan, China -- where wild animals are held captive together and sold as delicacies or pets, a terrifying mix of viruses and species can occur.

"If they are being shipped or held in markets, in close proximity to other animals or humans," said Cunningham, "then there is a chance those viruses are being shed in large numbers." He said the other animals in a market like that are also more vulnerable to infection as they too are stressed.

"We are increasing transport of animals -- for medicine, for pets, for food -- at a scale that we have never done before," said Kate Jones, Chair of Ecology and Biodiversity at University College London.

"We are also destroying their habitats into landscapes that are more human-dominated. Animals are mixing in weird ways that have never happened before. So in a wet market, you are going to have a load of animals in cages on top of each other."

Cunningham and Jones both pointed to one factor that means rare instances of zoonotic spillover can turn into global problems in weeks. "Spillovers from wild animals will have occurred historically, but the person who would have been infected would probably have died or recovered before coming into contact with a large number of other people in a town or in a city," said Cunningham.

"These days with motorized transport and planes you can be in a forest in central Africa one day, and in a city like central London the next."

Jones agreed. "Any spillover you might have had before is magnified by the fact there is so many of us, and we are so well connected."
There are two simple lessons, they say, that humanity can learn, and must learn fast.

First, bats are not to blame, and might actually help provide the solution. "It's easy to point the finger at the host species," said Cunningham.

"But actually it's the way we interact with them that has led to the pandemic spread of the pathogen." He added that their immune systems are poorly understood and may provide important clues. "Understanding how bats cope with these pathogens can teach us how to deal with them, if they spillover to people."

The cause of "zoonotic spillover," or transfer from bats or other wild species, is almost always human behavior, says Professor Andrew Cunningham from the Zoological Society of London.

Ultimately diseases like coronavirus could be here to stay, as humanity grows and spreads into places where it's previously had no business. Cunningham and Jones agree this will make changing human behavior an easier fix than developing a vastly expensive vaccine for each new virus.

The coronavirus is perhaps humanity's first clear, indisputable sign that environmental damage can kill humans fast too. And it can also happen again, for the same reasons.

"There are tens of thousands [of viruses] waiting to be discovered," Cunningham said. "What we really need to do is understand where the critical control points are for zoonotic spillover from wildlife are, and to stop it happening at those places. That will be the most cost-effective way to protect humans."

Jones said viruses "are on the rise more because there are so many of us and we are so connected. The chance of more [spillovers into humans] happening is higher because we are degrading these landscapes. Destroying habitats is the cause, so restoring habitats is a solution."

The ultimate lesson is that damage to the planet can also damage people more quickly and severely than the generational, gradual shifts of climate change.

"It's not OK to transform a forest into agriculture without understanding the impact that has on climate, carbon storage, disease emergence and flood risk," said Jones. "You can't do those things in isolation without thinking about what that does to humans."

Call a spade a spade.

There must be a reason why so many major outbreaks have started in China. It can't just be a coincidence.

Shoaib is not wrong here, all my family members are disgusted at what they eat. When I was a kid my dad used to take me to a restaurant called 'Big Splash' in East Coast in Singapore, Chinese were eating a live lobster. The poor Lobster was moving its legs around while Chinese were using their chopsticks and eating it, tears came flowing from my eyes as i kept eating my cooked lobster :inzi

Disgusting hate speech. But this thread is about recognizing the causes of the outbreak and whether that is racist or not (it is not). Calling for people to die based on these habits is another matter

When your country has elected a President who panders to racists, then comments like Trumps inevitably leads to this sort of response.
