"I'm sure that people who haven't won anything give these kinds of statements. I don't know what Shastri has achieved in his career apart from winning the World Championship in Australia. I don't think he was a part of an overseas series win. If you haven't won anything yourself, you end up giving this kind of statement. It was very childish. Even if you had won 4-1, you won't say this is the best Indian team touring abroad. I'm sure people wouldn't have taken this seriously. I don't know about other people but I didn't take it seriously because it was a very immature statement," he told CricketNext.

Always up for a fight is Gautam eh? Must be a Delhi thing.

In this case it's Shastri, so grab the popcorn and watch the fun.

Can't disagree with Gambhir here. He lost 4-1 in England, Lost in SA, not because his team wasn't good enough but because he lacks the brains or the balls to pick a good team and question kohli when he is being stupid (which is most of the times).

All I can remember of Shastri is him coming down the track and blocking the ball. He was pretty selfish player.

Not that he did anything of note, but Shastri was part of the 1983 World Cup team and also played all three tests on the 1986 tour of England, which India won 2-0. To misappropriate Matthew Hayden, Gambhir is a bigger obnoxious weed than Shastri ever was.

Well GG will say it like it is.

For a young man, he has all the traits of an older person!

Gambhir is right. Shastri goes tom Tom how this team is best touring team.
Even CoA asked Shastri to shut up and let others be judge of the team.
Shastri needs such kind of reactions otherwise he will go out of control.

I think he isn't cricket smart but is not stupid either he sees the writing on the wall, the best bowling unit a decent set of batsmen and achievement outside Asia is win in a dead rubber and a thumping in England, he hopes that everyone else believes the ** so as to keep his job because a loss here and people upstairs in bcci are going to cut kohli's wings a bit which means shastri will be the first casualty, sacking kumble the way it happened left a bad taste in many people's mouths.

I've always felt that GG, for a middle aged man, has all the traits of a teenager. The guy is always looking for a "phadda"!

Gambhir is such a crybaby, always cries over one thing or the other.

Hehe am a Gauti fan. But unfair to question credentials of someone who played for 10+ years for India. Shadtri was talking about this being the best traveling team, not calling himself the bestever coach.

Also by Gautam's logic, what did he achieve compared to Dhoni to be publicly critical of him. Not the right line of argument IMO

BTW Saj MIG will be a great scoop if PP can get GG to do an interview, will surely be a blockbuster.

Gambhir need to stop these daily public rants. He is no longer in the team and should not speak like this against our head coach in media irrespective of what is his views are. This is very unlike Indian ex players.

There are always two sides of the coin. I am pretty sure that Shastri must have said something about Gambhir. But the headline as always tells you only his response.

Shastri has achieved a beer gut during his tenure as coach. That is no mean achievement! As a Cricketer he once won a major one day tournament where I believe India defeated Pak in the final. I think it was in 1985 Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket in Melbourne or something when he was player of the series. He was also in the team when India won the 1983 World Cup although I am not sure how well he performed. Gambhir just picking a fight with anyone as always, no class.

He is jealous of Shastri as Virat got his back. Virat will Achieve milestones that no Indian Captain can break, this guy has hunger written all over it even though he is the real person who has achieved everything and is blessed in all facet of the game. :kohli

Shastri has set a secret goal for himself on this Australian tour. The goal is to finally break David Boon's beer record. BTW, he is looking horrible nowadays and also speaking a lot of rubbish!

There was a great thread on twitter by someone which had Shastri thumping GG by all means. If its okay would love to reproduce it here.

Shastri was a genuine all-rounder who took more than 150 test wickets for India, still he has 11 test match hundreds to his name as opposed to Gambhir who scored 9 test hundreds. Shastri scored 2 test hundreds in England and one hundred in Australia which was a double hundred.Shastrii averages 55.86 with the bat in Australia and 33.53 in England. Gambhir averages 22.63 and 12.70 in the two countries respectively.

Out of the 18 innings that Gambhir played in England and Australia, he scored just one fifty.
Shastri won a test series in England in 1986 by a margin of 2-0 which remains India's biggest test series win in England. Gambhir never won a single test match in England. He played 5 test matches in England and India lost all 5.
Shastri was the man of the tournament in the World Championship of cricket in 1986 in Australia which was a major multi-team ICC tournament. He scored three fifties on the trot in the last three matches of that tournament including the final.
Numbers clearly and absolutely rubbish Gambhir's claims that Shastri never won anything. Numbers also clearly suggest that Shastri was overall a better test cricketer than Gambhir. Gambhir has been ruthlessly disrespecting anyone and everyone he wishes to since his retirement. He needs to be reminded that although he played two ridiculously good knocks for India in two world cup finals, there were a lot of things which he couldn't achieve in his career. For example - Success in England and Australia which Shastri achieved. He also needs to be reminded that everyone is not like MS Dhoni who wouldn't hit back at him and would never speak a word.

This is Shastri we are talking about.

The real coach is Kohli.

Anyone who upsets Kohli usually gets the chop and Shastri will just be a Yes-man for Kohli.

Yes, that's been the trend in India and also in Pakistan. "PLAYER POWER". That's why a great like Greg Chappell was hated by seniors and especially by ex-captain Ganguly.

Yep! But I presume it's very difficult to grab an interview with Indian players - which is why we see so few of them.

"Azharuddin has no place in my life": Gautam Gambhir

“Only his ban was removed, he was never given a clean chit. I've read the report as well. I don't do tweets just for the heck of doing it or just to take publicity out of it. Obviously, that is not something which was there. Had it been that he was given a clean chit from CBI - it wasn't the case. Only his ban was removed and still if you go through the report, it says that yes, there's been something wrong that has happened, which he has done wrong,”

“Okay, you've allowed him to contest elections, that's fine, that's up to the country to elect him, whether they want him as a Member of Parliament or not. But I've absolutely and thoroughly believed in it, and that is the kind of policy that I've had. If someone has done something wrong, especially of this sort, he's got no place in my life and I'm going to stand by what I believe, by what I said”

Wow - looks like GG is in a bad mood!

Gambhir has always been a classless mannerless individual. Lol, aggressively speaking your mind all the time regardless of the situation or context is not alphamale behaviour

Truer words haven't been spoken. Shastri as a coach is disgrace

Personally feel Gambhir is getting too much attention than he deserves, for me he wasn't really a great cricketer as such, in his golden era from 2007-2011 he mostly performed on flat wickets. Yes he turned up for India in the 2007 T20 WC final and 2011 ODI WC final but apart from that he hasn't done much else.

He got dropped at a very early and he was unable to win back his place in the side for 4-5 years at a time when India's batting especially in test matches was suspect.

Everyone knows Shastri is a yes-man at this point. Let the man enjoy his job and stop criticizing him for doing nothing.

All he wants to do is get a drink and watch the game on a comfy sofa in the dressing room. Is that too much to ask?

Is Shastri really talking up a team which nearly lost to a team missing the best Test batsmen in the world and David Warner.

I dont think many teams would have defeated Australia in Australia even with no Smith and no Warner.

So, it will still be a great achievement if India wins this series. If those two were there, it would have been a competitive series which not many teams can boost of vs Aus in Australia.

To me it seems he tries to give such 'aggressive' statements to convince himself that he's a hardo and an alpha male when he is anything but...

All I want to know is what did Afridi say to him during that confrontation?? Goes on an annual whinge about it every year lol !!

Pakistan nearly beat them at full strength... We've beaten them at full strength and were in good positions to beat them in other matches. SA have beaten them many times. That's 3 teams right there, I'd back England to beat this pathetic Aus batting line up which has zero batting leaders who can convert starts with their deep batting line up.

Australia's bowling is still strong, but their batting is one of the weakest in world cricket among top sides.

I can't see their bowlers bailing out their batsmen too many times without a few world class batsmen or players capable of converting starts into tons without the pressure of doing it on their own (no Smith or Warner to save them or take the pressure).

Lol what a comedy. Gambhir had a complete go at Shastri and ends up saying he didn’t take his statement seriously.
People who don’t take things seriously don’t spend so much time on commenting it even if they are asked this question. They simply ignore these kind of questions.

Well Gambhir can talk all the sheets he wants, after all he was one of the main reason India lifted the cup in 2011. Sashtri on the other hand, more wiskey in daylight?

Shastri contributed more to Indian cricket than Gambhir. Anyone who followed Indian cricket in the 80s remembers a guy who would always be willing to do the difficult roles, whether that be opening the batting on spicy pitches or willing to hold an end up with the ball when the team were under the cosh. Gambhir was a non-entity on wickets that helped fast bowlers with his pitiful technique against the moving ball. He's also a populist loon who mouths off for the sake of controversy than anything else. Someone on this thread justly compared him with Sarfraz Nawaz.

Ravishankar Jayadritha Shastri has hit 6 sixes in an over and he also had the fastest double ton in FC back then.

NZ beat Aus in Aus?

No one takes Gambhir seriously, he hasn’t done anything after retiring. Sour old man

at the end of the day, one has a worldcup in his resume, another - a bottle of wiskey

Shows how little you know

Shastri was part of 1983 World Cup winning squad  seriously do some research man

Also he was crucial in 1985 World championship win which IMO is bigger achievement than a T20 WC

Lol so true. In his angry dwarf habits he totally misses the irony. And this isn’t the first time either. Says he doesn’t care about afridi but has an annual whinge session about afridi

I know that, what I am saying is one has a contrbution to show for the world cup on his resume. Other one did not even play the final did he? And what are you on. 2011 WC is a 50 over wc. Ghambir scored that crutial 90 odd. Perhaps you need to do your own research? :smith

no i meant both Shastri and Gambhir have one ODI WC.

So obv your next clutching at straws would be the T20 WC so the response to that is the 1985 series

TBH i was not even born then so i have no clue on what that is to begin with lmaooo ... that should tell alot where it went in the history book. Also any WC (50/T20) > any series. Ain't no one gonna remember some champion trophy winner in the long run, neither this world wtv series.
