Azhar Ali speaking to the media:

"Its good that South Africa have come to Pakistan after such a long time; Every team likes to perform in their homeground and most importantly, its good for the newer cricketers also as they will have better chances to perform at home as they have already been playing in the domestic season"

"Players always play with confidence at home as we have shown in the previous home series; But even if you look at the series against England and New Zealand, someone has always made a century; So if we look at the 1st Test in NZ, Fawad made a hundred, whilst I came close to one in the 2nd Test; And in the series against England, we had centuries scored in it as well from our players; I do not think we are far behind as conditions in England and New Zealand have always been tough for Asian batsmen but our players have fought their way in those circumstances; I am sure we could have done better in NZ but we didnt but I have faith in our batting line up (for this series)"

"Mohammad Yousuf is working with us and sharing his experience also, so its upto us to make use of that; I am hoping that with Babar Azam back in the line-up we will perform well in this series"

"South Africa is a strong team - they have a good mix of fast-bowlers and also have a good spin attack in the shape of Keshav Maharaj who has been with the side for a long time, and is a consistent performer; If a spinning track is made then we will have to bring our A game against him as a he is a seasoned performer; So I feel it will be a big challenge batting against a top quality bowling side."

"There is always a challenge for a new player to handle the pressure of international cricket; There are insecurities also at play which is part of our culture, as the player feels that he will not be able to comeback to the side if he doesnt perform well; Also there is a big difference between domestic and international cricket which can cause some issues"

"The tours of England and New Zealand were tough for us, especially when you take into account the COVID-19 situation; Now the PCB have allowed us to have our families together but even they are finding out how difficult it is to live in one room, to not being allowed to come out of a bubble - all these are challenges for everyone"

"But it wont be right to make these into excuses, and we have to look at the positive side of this situation and be satisfied with the fact that we are at least playing international cricket"

"The real challenge during these situations is to keep oneself motivated; In New Zealand, the time spent in quarantine was very tough where we couldnt practice, run or do other gym work; So it was very tough to keep ourselves motivated"

"Any player who performs in your domestic structure should be valued and that is the case in the team selection for this series"

"We have a habit of praising and raising players on a pedestal if they do well, but also dont take too long in bringing them down (if they falter) which is part of our culture which should change although I have no idea when that will happen"

Expect Azhar and Babar to carry the load in home conditions.

What Azhar really meant was: "I have faith in Babar Azam to carry our batting lineup through the series" :facepalm

Recycled statements, series after series

Misbah said pretty much the exact same thing before the NZ series

Fawad can be valuable too especially at national stadium Karachi.

After all he's been playing there for years and has scored most of his run at this stadium.

Azhar needs a high scoring series at home. And I believe he can do it. He has proved so many doubters (including me) wrong before. He also needs to guide Babar on the ground.

Pakistani batting is dangerous in home conditions. Let's see how SA counters it.

His average at NSK over the last 6 innings is 100 at SR of 46

What else is he going to say? I don't have any faith in my batsmen?

This time it's at home, the faith might be a bit more well placed.

Hopefully we see an improvement in the batting.

I've always believed that if our openers can provide a solid foundation, our middle order is good enough to pile on the runs.

Against New Zealand, if Shan Masood and Abid Ali actually scored some runs, we'd have been able to post 350-400 consistently, but they didn't.

That's our problem, we have some pretty capable batsmen in our middle order, but when the top order doesn't fire, you can't expect the middle order to score 300+ runs in SENA.

If we can find one good opener, we will be on the right track towards becoming a competitive batting side in SENA conditions. From a bowling standpoint, we need to improve and the only way to do that is by playing games. I want the PCB to make sure all of our players play the next FC tournament, no excuses. They need game time and some need to prove their worth and develop the much needed skills.

Bowling should be the main concern right now. you can’t expect a SA batting to capitulate to current bowling lineup. batting should be alright on these pitches , unless Pakistan has raging turners or seaming pitches which we don’t know

I think pakistan bowling will do well in these conditions.our openers need to give a good start so that our middle order dont come under preesure

Azhar now needs to step up and save us from embarrassment.

As much as I'd like to move on from Azhar, we cannot do so while he is the only one in the top order holding it together almost every game.

Hes the only one that has faith This lineup is terrible we desperately need him to open so we can get an additional mid order batter in shakeel or ghulam in

Hes well served doing his blockathan from opening than one down

I think he needs to step up and take one of the opening slots. That's how he started his career as an international iirc, and we really need someone to give us a decent start. The openers have been failing regularly for the last couple of years now, it is beyond a joke. In effect Azhar and Babar are being forced to open anyway because the two specialist clowns can never get into double figures.

SA were 28/0 after 4 overs and I wrote in a chat at the time that we would achieve the same score in about 15 overs. Lo and behold we were 26/3 after 15.3 overs.

Anyway our batting basically starts now so I expect a lead of about 70-100 if things don't totally fall apart.

Azhar is prone to getting out early in the day so he should look to dig in, Fawad is very familiar with the conditions so he should do well, Rizwan and Faheem are in fine form and Hassan just scored a century on this ground in the QeA final.

Time for Azhar to stop talking and start performing. One of him, fawad or rizwan will need to get a 100 to bail the team out of a hole here.

Duck against a spinner - in Pakistan! What more can one say?

More like a shot in hope than conviction!

Worryingly it's the same issue that was happening in England, front leg planted and playing around his front pad.
