Younis Khan speaking to journalists:

"I travelled a lot after my retirement for charity and learnt how I can become a more humble person and how I can work with people"

"Whatever fame and a good name that the Almighty gave me, I feel that I am in a position based upon my experience and age that I can help the youngsters and that I can payback Pakistan for all that has been given to me"

"I asked Wasim Khan to give me parameters of my assignment in black and white, which was done; Its my habit that when given my boundaries"

"The reasons for leaving captaincy was this - I had asked Ijaz Butt to make me captain for the 2011 World Cup team and if I am unable to deliver this and am unable to gel the side then I will leave myself and that's what I did"

"A person always learns from experiences and after my retirement I learnt how I can serve and be a humble person too, and how to fulfill my commitments - we all learn from our experiences and the best person is one who learns and moves forward"

"The challenge for us is that when we leave for England, we wont have that much time to prepare; However, I am not making excuses that there isnt enough time to help the players; The only issue is that due to current situation, as a coach there is a challenge to coach players and also maintain physical distance, and to follow SOPs"

"I will try to impart my experience not only about batting but also about the ups and downs that I have seen in my life as I have mentioned before; I will try to use my experience of life and hopefully will give all of you good news from England"

"I am very happy that Misbah Bhai and Younis Khan left cricket on a winning note after our series win vs West Indies; He was captaining really well and I was helping behind the scenes with my own captaincy by talking to the bowlers which was great"

"Wouldnt it be nice that we continue from where we left at the end of that series against West Indies"

"I have played under the captaincy of Waqar Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq and so it feels good"

"As far as the past is concerned, we should learn from it and move on; Its possible that I was more to blame for mistakes in the past than others and so we have to move forward"

"I have forgotten all that [revolt against him] - If I hadnt forgotten, I would not be standing with them; I am happy that when my name was mentioned for this role, Misbah didnt waste any time in approving it"

"I will try and not make the players double minded [confuse] as they have been under Misbah's guidance for a year or so; And whilst staying in my boundaries, I will share my experiences with them"

"We have a young batting line-up as if you remove Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali then you have a very young and inexperienced batting lineup"

"It will be too early for me to consider a full time head coach role because managing a FC or franchise team vs an international team is very different; I am focussing on this series and it would be great if my batsmen score runs in the same way we played the 2016/17 series where we finished it on a good note"

"In the same way that The Late Bob Woolmer used to treat us - and I learnt from him that how without changing/tinkering with the techniques of the likes MoYo, myself, Razzaq you can get them to perform better"

"I had many good plans for U19 coaching as well but unfortunately that did not happen as we could not come on the same page"

"Its too early to compare Babar Azam with Virat Kohli, you can compare today's Kohli with Babar Azam of 5 years later, thats the only comparison which is suitable"

"Sometimes we get too demanding on our players when we put too many expectations on them, what I would like to happen is that space be given to Babar Azam - We may think that he will go past Javed Miandad or Sachin Tendulkar but we must give him time"

"If God Forbid our batting collapses or doesnt do well, you will find me here (answering questions) I am not going anywhere"

"In the England series it is not only important to play well on the field but off the field we also have to do well as a lot of people follow us there"

"I have been motivating Fawad Alam for the past 3 years, whenever I speak to him or when he calls me"

"I always give the example of Misbah-ul-Haq who became captain at the age of around 36-37 years, and he retired at 42 years but that last period of his career as captain was fantastic"

"I tell Fawad based on this example to keep on performing and keeping your fitness level up at whatever level of cricket you play - so I am hopeful that Fawad will one day fulfil his destiny and reach his goals"

"I have said this before that its important for the batsman to keep an eye on the runrate as its much easier now as its shown on scoreboards etc"

"We have made this mistake before in tournaments that we dont keep an eye on runrate and hope that we will catch up in the remaining matches; But that doesnt work as sometimes you can have rained out matches and we have to bow out of the tournament"

"The World Cup (T20) is coming up so we should be careful about runrates as we saw in previous World Cup that teams that had lost to us went ahead"

"We all have to serve the Head Coach and make sure that its not the case that he gets too busy solving our problems and is not able to put his attention on players"

"Whenever Misbah asks for or needs my advice, as will help him like I have done before - he and I both and have this kind of trust on each other"

A few very awkward questions asked such as how can he work with Misbah who Mohammad Yousuf said was involved in a conspiracy to remove him as captain!

But Younis did well to his credit and his new found humility will be tested.

:)) We'll let your coaching tenure and subsequent media appearances be the judge of that.

I hope this goes well.

Something tells me given YK's history this could go horribly wrong.

YK has some very strange people around him!

“I will try and not make the players double minded [confuse] as they have been under Misbah's guidance for a year or so”

He couldn’t help himself, could he? He probably tried very hard to restrain himself in this interview.

It is also worth noting that he talked about himself in third person only once.

This is going to be fun. Good or bad, it will at least be enjoyable.

Looking forward to his press conferences when Pakistan are skittled by Archer and co. for 120.

I might be wrong, but I believe Younis would be the type of batting coach who would get frustrated and end up throwing his players under the bus instead of protecting them in the media.

Humility was never an issue for YK. Issue was his temper.

He needs to have a thicker skin.

I think this thread will be the most bump able thread ever. YK’s words will come to bite him.

Dont trust him for one second.

A person can change, better late than never. I hope his newly found humbleness stays. One thing to note is that he's grateful for Misbah's support. Hopefully he doesn't forget that and throws Misbah under the bus when times get tough

Islamabad: Pakistan batting coach Younis Khan believes it will be difficult for the players not to use saliva to shine the cricket ball after the ICC confirmed interim regulation changes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The ICC has said that if a player applies saliva to the ball, typically in an effort to make it swing more, umpires will initially be lenient toward teams during an initial period of adjustment.

Subsequent instances will lead to a team receiving a warning. Repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a five-run penalty to the batting side.

"It will be difficult for players who have got used to shining the ball using saliva," Younis said during a video conference organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday.

"Players at times act instinctively, but as supporting staff, we have an important role. It's a challenge for me too, because we don't have much time between now and England."

Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommences. Sweat can still be used to polish the ball, however.

The surge in coronavirus cases in Pakistan has forced the cricket board to shelve its plans of a training camp for players ahead of the England tour. Instead the PCB will ask the England Cricket Board to bring forward the scheduled travel of its team to London in early July so that players could get more time to practice before the first Test, likely to start from 5 August.

"I don't want to make excuses by saying I don't have enough time, but these are unusual times," Younis said. "Even if you are to engage with players, you need to keep your distance from them and continue to follow protocols.

"I want to try and get my experience across to the players and for them to be able to benefit from it in the short time we have between now and the England tour. Where there's a will, a lot can be achieved in a very short span of time."

The PCB has beefed up its support staff ahead of the England tour by including Younis as batting coach and Mushtaq Ahmed as spin coach. Misbah-ul-Haq, who is also the chairman of selectors, is the head coach while Waqar Younis will continue as fast bowling coach.

In the absence of regular batting coach, Misbah had been working with the batsmen too but Khan is confident his arrival won't confuse the players.

"What is important is I don't want the players to become double minded or end up giving them conflicting instructions," he said.

"In the Pakistan batting lineup, Azhar Ali or Asad Shafiq aside, you see a very young team. It wouldn't help if we confused or overcoached them, and I wouldn't want to contradict what Misbah has taught them. I'd rather work within what Misbah's style is and work accordingly."

KARACHI: Former captain Younis Khan on Wednesday described Pakistan's upcoming tour of England as significant for world cricket in view of the global health crisis but said it would be difficult for the players to adjust to the changed conditions.

Younis was on Tuesday appointed as Pakistan's batting coach for the three-Test and three-T20I tour of England starting July 30.
"The coming series is important in many ways but to me it is significant because of the existing situation. The world will be watching the series between two top sides. Tours to England have always been important for us," he said.

Younis said it will be difficult for the players to get back to playing cricket with the new set of Standard Operating Procedures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It is not easy for any player to let go of old habits. It will be difficult with the social distancing rules in place whether you are travelling, in the team bus or even in the dressing room.

"I think more than ever, the role of the support staff is going to be very important as to how they help the players. The support staff now has a big role to play," he added.

Younis, who scored 10099 runs from 118 Tests between 2000 and 2017, said he can bring improvement in batting of the players with his experience and skills.

Reminded that former captain Muhammad Yousuf had claimed recently that when a group of players revolted against his captaincy in 2009, current head coach Misbah-ul-Haq was apparently the mastermind, Younis said for him "past is past".

"I don't know the real picture to be honest, but I go by the time I spent with Misbah when we were playing together, he was captain and we got along very well. Both of us retired in the same series and on a winning note when Pakistan won a Test series in West Indies for the first time in 2017," Younis said.

"I want to share the dressing room with Misbah as a colleague and support staff and I have forgotten about what happened in the past. I have moved on. I am happy that Misbah pushed me for this position so soon after taking over as head coach,” he said.

He said he was happy to be on board the national team.

"This is a new role for me and I want to make my contribution to Pakistan cricket.”

Younis said Pakistan have a relatively young batting side except for Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq, so he will have a lot of work to do.
He said he had learnt a lot from playing under top coaches like Javed Miandad and Bob Woolmer.

“I would like to emulate Bob who was a great coach. He used to give us space and just worked on our mental side to make us more productive and he succeeded in that. I have learnt how to make a player more productive without tinkering with his technique or skills.”
Younis also said he would be equally comfortable in all three formats.

“Luckily I got a chance to play a lot of T20 cricket and we won the World Cup under my captaincy at a time when everyone doubted whether I was fit for the shorter format."

He is a bit like Pierce from Community.

In any case, drama queens in the set up had never been good for Pakistan cricket team, as players or personnel. It always ends in a huge dumpster fire. Pakistan has an abundance of these dramaybaaz when it comes to both players and coaches.

Playing achievements / “talent” directly correlates with bad decision makers, drama queens etc for Pakistan. A good psychologist or therapist is not a bad option to invest in.

Handled that interview surprisingly well, some awkward questions there. Let's see how he handles the interviews after an inevitable batting collapse

He has to have mellowed down a bit and he needs to tone down the pathan short temperment a bit. He has a lot of self-pride and his timing on decision making has never been good. i think he will genuinly help the players but i would like for him to put his emotions aside. And if he ever chooses to step down, i request that he finishes a tour and only then make a decison of stepping down.

I have no doubt that he is a great addition to the staff as long as he can control his emotions and timing or expressing himself when things are down.

Hmmm yeah not gonna comment untill i see some games.

We all know who and what younis is. Not going by his political comments.

Yup noticed that immediately and surprised people haven’t latched onto that. I’m sure he was trying hard to control his tendencies throughout the interview haha.

I don’t know how good of a batting coach he will be especially since he was a bit of an unorthodox batsman. Definitely he can work on the mental side of the game though as there’s little doubt about his ability to handle pressure and be mentally strong.

He will defo improve thier batting against spin seen a few vidoes on YouTube degarding overall technique

It will be all fine until he is removed and then it will be a conspiracy against him. For me these people offer nothing, and they are more trouble than they are worth.

"I have learnt to become a more humble person" : Younis Khan

What happened, got married ?

He'd be better off steering clear of some of the people who he associates with.

These people have done more harm than good for his career.

I'll tell you now i can see this turning sour. I think remember YK calling Misbah a "yes man"

KARACHI: Former cricketer Rashid Latif believes legendary batsman Younis Khan has been appointed the batting coach of the Pakistan team in order to protect head coach-cum-chief selector, Misbahul Haq, from any criticism if Men in Green’s batting performance is below-par on the England tour. Pakistan are scheduled to take on England in three Tests and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), which will be played in August-September.

“Let me tell you about the politics of cricket. Younis Khan has come as protection for Misbahul Haq. If batting fails and team loses, then blame will go on Younis and not Misbah,” said Latif on. Earlier in 2018, Younis left a level three coaching course abruptly after claiming that he was not provided proper accommodation by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore. However, Latif is adamant that the board was to blame for the unfortunate incident. “Younis doesn’t work with anyone unless he trusts them. PCB was responsible for the NCA incident. The board knows how to break someone. They didn’t wanted Younis, so they tried to corner him in order to make him angry,” he added. However, the newly-appointed batting coach is excited to start a new partnership with Misbah and is aiming to start from where he left off.

The duo brought the curtain down on their illustrious careers after Pakistan secured their first ever Test series win in the Caribbean, in 2017. Together the prolific pair scored 3,213 runs at an average of 68.36, the highest by any Pakistan pair in Test cricket. “We will start our partnership from where we left off. We retired from cricket at the same time and on a winning note and would like to do something similar in the coaching department as well,” said Younis. “I would like to carry on Misbah’s coaching philosophy, as he has been working with them for the past one year, so that players are not left double-minded.” Younis, 42, scored 10,099 runs at over 52 in 118 Tests from 2000 to 2017. This included a career-best 313 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009, which lifted him to number one position in the ICC rankings.

i dont expect to see people talking much sense on pakistani cable tv but i thought YK made some very good points in a tv program in the aftermath of CT victory. he told the viewers that Pakistan should be magnanimous in victory, that team should be level headed in defeat as well as victory and that Indian cricket team was very good and that Pakistan had much to learn from indian players. he certainly seemed to have played his cricket with the same spirit.

from afar, he seems to have made great strides from his early playing days. he has much to offer pakistan cricket if he works as diligently at coaching as he did on his batting. good luck to him.

As said in another thread. Misbah and Younis have shared a pretty good understanding and relationship. Current setup is the best Younis is ever gonna get to establish himself in the coaching setup. Misbah understands how Younis can sometimes say things which are too blunt and sometimes emotional so he will be mentally prepared unlike any other.

Younis should work hard and grasp this oppurtunity to control his emotions and be more calm. A level headed Younis Khan can help upcoming cricketers more than many others around not only due to his experience but him being a committed guy who gives his 100% without much politics and favoritism. Just needs to work on his emotions.

Misbah speaking about Younis Khan to the press:

"Younis Khan's presence is important for me especially when you have such a big squad where there are 17-18 batsmen; Younis Khan has experience of playing so much cricket and he knows how to prepare players mentally and also to look after their practice needs for Test matches; He knows when to speak to the players about technical and tactical issues; He is the best man to have in your staff who is tireless and his work ethic is excellent; He has played so much international cricket and was mentally strong, and now he is transferring and sharing all that experience with the players"
