Australian captain Tim Paine has delivered Pakistan a reality check, saying their Perth rout is irrelevant to the upcoming Test series.

The tourists skittled an Australia A batting line-up for just 122 all out in a tune-up to the first Test starting next Thursday in Brisbane.

But Paine dismisses any bearing of that warm-up game to the series-opener at the Gabba.

"I saw that Pakistan are smelling blood in the water or whatever they said," Paine told reporters in Adelaide.

"What happened in Perth has got nothing to do with what is going to happen at the Gabba."

Paine drew similarities with the Ashes after England's miracle Test win in Headingly.

"The same thing happened in England with the Headingly Test - 'Oh, momentum' and all these words that don't matter," he said.

"Ball one at the Gabba next week is all square and we start again."

Australia named a 14-strong squad for the first Test with opener Joe Burns recalled after being axed for the Ashes.

"That was a tough call to make, for Joe to miss out on that (series)," Paine said.

"He has come back to Queensland and hasn't put huge runs on the board but I think has been pretty consistent.

"He has shown over the years that he is a class player and his best cricket will score Test runs."

Travis Head is also set to return to the middle order after being dropped for the final Ashes Test.

Head, who scored a Sheffield Shield century for South Australia against NSW last week, has been named joint vice-captain with Pat Cummins for the Pakistan series.

"He (Head) he obviously scored an excellent hundred last week against a world-class attack so I'm sure he has taken a lot of confidence from that," Paine said.

"Trav's Test match record is outstanding for such a young cricketer. We have got full confidence in him."

Reading the first half of the interview it seems like Paine was cutting a promo in the WWE:yk3

Surprised he isn't trying to use this opportunity to talk Pakistan up as a "tough competitor"

Everyone knows this series will be a cakewalk for the real Australia team and it really didn't need to be said.

Dont worry guys and get ready for a phainta of a lifetime, this Aus squad is very tough for Pakistani team.

"I saw that Pakistan are smelling blood in the water or whatever they said," Paine told reporters in Adelaide.

What is the context here? and who is this in response too?

Tim Paine is a walking wicket for Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi.

If Smith made this statement it would make more sense.

Pakistan have to come hard at the Aussies. Who is Tim Paine to say this, he is basically another Sarfaraz, a non performing, wicketkeeper captain.

I know it's very unlikely, but if Pakistan wins a test, Tim Paine will be horribly embarassed and should resign.

Only Warner, Smith and Labuschagne are in our way, we should be able to deal with the rest pretty easily.

Geez unless this was in response to a specific question, it's pretty defensive. Paine sounds ruffled. Usually teams talk Pakistan up before a drubbing.

Though atleast he isnt saying they are unpredictable and other such monotnous terms. Pak better wake up before the wrestling match. :smith

Came here to say exactly this. The performance against the A team has caught everyone by surprise, and Paine doesn't sound as confident anymore

We need to score score 400+ to make a match off it. I don't see it happening I am afraid.

I think someone's got under the Aussie captain's skin, the media or Pakistan. Good going.

I think, TP is tiered of constantly justifying his spot in Australia team, more so now that they are playing a WK as specialist bat.

Australia is ruthless about their Captain and in almost 150 years I don’t think anyone ever struggled to justify own spot as Aussie Test Captain. Last one was Kim Hughes - had to leave it with tears.

This series is being hyped up more than usual. Perhaps cricket Australia just want to get some viewership and stands full. Also this team looks way better than the dreadful one that toured in 2016/17.

Wow he's going for it. None of this usual, cliched "We have to respect our opposition" etc etc

His trash-talking seems to be at the same level as his batting: dreadful. Having said that, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Pakistan gift him some cheap runs.

Thank god you didn’t take his side and say something bad about Pakistan this time I’m surprised

Not happening. This Aussie team is too good for India C team lookalike pak line up.
Dreaming is good but not to this extent where you expect to beat them in a test match. A draw seems more reasonable :uakmal

All I want is Chappelli, to come out before the games start and say Panicstan is an overrated team and their results in Australia are a disgrace to their proud cricketing culture. Will make me supremely happy, and maybe - just maybe - gee up the Pakistan players.

Sure, Starc and Cummins will be in the stands selling samosas only.

Lol. Funny.
But I am hopeful of a good Pak fightback after their performance against Aus A. It should be a real confidence booster for Pakistan.

Why Australia isn't trying Alex Carey in tests? He seems to me an exciting and impressive WK batsman to me.

I think that test which England won by a wicket still haunts him, the Ashes might have been retained but that was a golden chance to win an away Ashes series.

Tim paine likes trash talking. But he is somewhat gentle though with his comments like he did with Pant.

Joe Burns experienced first hand in Australia A’s disastrous tour game just how dangerous Pakistan’s speedsters will be this series, warning his Australian teammates “they will bring the fire”.

It was in reaction to Joe Burns, his own teammate lols

Painy was quick to respond. He knows its the bowling where they have big advantage and if Aus loses another home series then his captaincy will be on the line. Have a feeling Marcus. L will be skipper soon!

Paine smelling something else...

Much of the talk before the first Test has been around Tim Paine’s captaincy but the Aussie skipper has shown he’s still got it — at least in the banter stakes.

Paine has been the king of the sledge since last season when he and Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant had a back and forth.

The delightful banter ended with the a viral Instagram picture between Pant and Paine’s wife Bonnie after Tim invited the Indian star to come to Hobart and babysit his kids.

Paine was back at it in the heat of battle today as the star tried to get in the ear of another wicketkeeper in Mohammad Rizwan.

Clearly feeling good after Australia took 5/19 to have Pakistan reeling at 5/94, Paine dropped another cute sledge to start the summer.

“Sarfaraz would have already hit him four, Gazza,” Paine was caught on stump mic saying to short leg Marnus Labuschagne after Rizwan blocked a shot off Nathan Lyon. “Sweep shot, bang, four.

“Smells good though, smell’s very nice.”

Alright Tim.

Paine was much happier by the end of the day as Australia bowled out Pakistan for 240.

Rizwan’s dismissal was almost as comical as well as Pat Cummins appeared to deliver a no ball that the technology didn’t even pick up on.

Fox Cricket commentator and Aussie cricket legend Mike Hussey told news.com.au the banter is part of the fun of being in the middle.

“A bit of banter, as long as it doesn’t cross the line and the boys don’t get carried away and it gets nasty or abusive, it’s all good fun,” he said.

During his career, the man affectionately known as Mr Cricket said sledging was something he tried to steer clear of.

“Everyone’s different really,” he said. “I don’t agree with nasty sledging, I just think it shouldn’t be part of the game but a bit of banter is always good fun. You’re just trying to get the batsman to lose a bit of concentration. For me personally, I didn’t try to engage in any because I knew the fielding team were just trying to make you lose your concentration and make a mistake. It’s just trying to get the batsman to think about something else. I think you can do it in a bit of a humorous way if you’re quick witted enough — I was never quick witted enough but as long as it doesn’t get abusive then I don’t have an issue with it.”

Hussey was speaking with news.com.au as the cricket legend is offering the opportunity of a lifetime.

The charity is close to Hussey with two of his four children being born three months premature.

“It’s a really good initiative I’m with my wife an ambassador for WIRF,” he said. “We had two premature births with our children, both were very premature at 28 weeks and it was a really tough time for our family and WIRF do a lot of research on women’s health but also in trying to reduce the number of preterm births.

“Hang With A Star works hand-in-hand with providing someone two flights and accommodation to the Adelaide Test match, it’s a day nighter. I’ll meet them there and bring them up to the commentary box where they can meet everyone and see how it runs behind the scenes. It’s a bit of a money can’t buy experience.”
