"I think Saeed Anwar is the best ODI player that Pakistan has ever produced" : Inzamam-ul-Haq

Inzamam-ul-Haq speaking about Saeed Anwar on his YouTube channel:

"Saeed Anwar's batting was such that we wished to play like him.

"The shots that we'd dream of at night, he would play them in the morning.

"Out of all the Pakistani batsmen, people say I had a lot of talent and I didn't perform according to my talent, but I believe that the talent that Saeed Anwar had, no one else had.

"When he was batting, it looked like cricket was very easy. The ball didn't seem to be seaming or swinging. When I batted alongside him, I enjoyed it a lot. He would put the bowler under pressure, making it easier for the others.

"I don't think there has ever been a similar wristy player in Pakistan.

"I think Saeed Anwar is the best ODI player that Pakistan has ever produced.

"When you create an ODI XI, he will easily fit it. He started hard hitting in Pakistan.

"Saeed bhai was the most nervous person in the dressing room but when he went into the ground, it was the bowlers who became nervous. He completely changed when he went out onto the pitch.

"I don't think Pakistan has produced as good a player as him since for ODI cricket.

"I played with many greats like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Javed bhai. All these players are witty and under pressure, they joke around and release pressure from others. Saeed bhai was ahead of all the rest. Now he has a beard and he's a pious man, may Allah bless him but he was the most witty. He would call the players' room, changing his voice, calling players somewhere. That happened with me many times.

"In Faisalabad, we lost a Test to SA and he was captain. Haroon Rasheed was the manager. In those days, mobiles had just come out so Haroon bhai and Saeed bhai had new phones. In that time, it wouldn't show caller IDs. Our chairman was Zulfiqar Bukhari. I was sitting with Saeed bhai, he called Haroon Rasheed and (pretended he was the Chairman and) told him "What are these senior players doing, kick them all out, they don't score." Haroon bhai said he was thinking the same. Saeed bhai put the phone off and asked Haroon bhai, what are you saying to the chairman? Haroon bhai was ashamed and said it was Chairman so I humoured him.

"Once, Mushtaq and I had to get passports made. A guy had to come and take us for that. He (Saeed bhai) called us at 5 AM and told us to come down immediately, telling us we have to come down to get our passports done. We looked for him in the whole lobby and couldn't find him. Then we got another call saying that he was near the coffee shop. We looked for him everywhere but couldn't find him. Then we came back and saw Saeed bhai.

"He was a great friend too. If anyone needed help, he would help others.

"Saeed bhai didn't believe in coaching. I won't take names but whenever coaches tried to change anything in Saeed bhai, he would reject it. He had such self-confidence and belief, I'm not saying the coaches were wrong, but he focused on his natural game.

"These coaching aspects, like your head is here, your shoulder is there, I don't believe in these things that much either.

"When he went towards deen, he had gotten a huge setback when his daughter Bismah passed away. We were playing in Multan. He got married in a place close to us. We had a lot of attachments. When we played Bangladesh in Multan and went to Lahore, then we got the news. It was Allah's will.

"This changed Saeed bhai's life. He had just one daughter and she didn't remain. It changed his life. When Allah takes something, he gives a lot. He gave such deen to him and changed his life.

"The life that Saeed bhai spends now, he used to be a totally different man. He used to have music systems worth lacs of rupees. Allah changed him completely. He gave him children and also changed his life. He is very satisfied with life. You see us still speaking and doing stuff related to cricket. He is totally dedicated to what he's doing and he's become the source of guidance for so many people. I pray that Allah also helps others to become like him.

"One of his qualities was that taking a single was effortless for him. Many people struggle with this nowadays, but had no difficulty. Sometimes I feel that he should come into the grounds and transfer his art to other people, the way he plays, rotates strike. But then I look at the work he is doing and how he is teaching people something even more beneficial, and I think that's even more important. If he wasn't doing this, I'd say he was being unfair with others but I think that what he is doing right now is much more important than cricket."

Spot on, the greatest Pakistani batsman. He was on par with Tendulkar in the late 90's and he was a tragic loss to Pakistan cricket. Wish he had carried on but you could tell he wasn't himself after he lost his daughter.

Inzamam is trolling. Saeed Anwar was definitely not a better ODI cricketer than Wasim, Waqar or Miandad

Really was a sublime batsman. Words can’t do justice to the talent and style he brought to Pakistan cricket. If there is a negative it’s only that we can all wish he dominated the premier bowlers of his time like steve Waugh’s Australian team. But then nobody could do that. (Except Dravid and laxman).

I believe he was brilliant against Australia in tests but couldn’t perform in ODIs against them.
Actually, he couldn’t perform against South Africa. I remember he used to struggle against Alan Donald but even against them he scored a wonderful century in that famous Durban test in 1998.

He was not even the best ODI batsman, let alone cricketer. Anwar is one of my favourites, but no way he was a better ODI batsman than Zaheer & Javed; let alone as a player over Imran, Wasim, WY & arguably Saqline.

Last week, Anwar came to Toronto and I attended couple of his sessions - not from the devotion, rather just wanted to see the changed man that he is now from his past. His speech was full of stories about his past team mates, past incidents around PCT .... and every such story was with reference to one of five players - Inzi, Mushi, Saqline, MoYo & Afridi and no one else.

Anwar is massively overrated by PPers. He was an average ODI cricketer. His record against top teams is extremely poor, he loved bashing Indian trundlers so Pakistanis have fond memories of him.

People confuse Anwar of tests with Anwar of ODI's. Anwar of ODI's will be like Ganguly of test matches.

Yeah, Inzi is a PP’er.

According to ICC ratings, Javed Miandad and Zaheer abbas were much better than Saeed Anwar.

Also, Wasim Akram is the best ODI cricketer.

Guy was brilliant, oh the good ole days of the 90s. A diamond among great Pakistan players of that era.

To put this into perspective, nowadays on PP, we squabble over whether to bring back 40 year old Kami to T20 team.

Goes to show your hidden hate for Saeed the legend ODI opener.

In the 90s, he had more odi centuries than Sachin Tendulkar.

But then Tendulkar started overtaking him by the late 90s and start of 2000s.

Saeed Anwar wasn't interested in cricket anymore by that time.

In batting elegance and beauty, Saeed had no match at the time. Timing was superb and definitely the most beautiful to watch.

Don't be too hard on him, pummeling Indian bowlers for fun would have hurt.

He may be one of the best but he isnt one of the brightest. In the WC final in 99, he started to change his grip when he was in, he couldnt change it and was visibly getting frustrated, the longer it took, the more the crowd got on his back. In the end, he did change it but the damage was done and he lost concentration and got out straight away. A brighter player would swapped bats, got someone to change the grip in the dressing room and PK may have been World Champs.

No hate, I like Anwar he was a classy batsmen and a quality test opener. However, in ODI's he was average. You probably didn't watch Anwar or followed his career as you might be too young, so you are reading into stats and mixing different formats.

In ODI's He was phenomenal against mediocre bowling but average overall considering how he dared against the best teams.

He did get his average to decent level against WI by having a good home series on phattas. Otherwise he sucked against them too (not huge sample size though).

I agree with elegance and beauty, Anwar was superb in those.

Don't be too hard on him, pummeling Indian bowlers for fun would have hurt.

Couldn’t get the job done in 3 WC encounters with a superior team.

Sachin on the other hand 3 man of the match awards in WC games against Pak with a relatively weaker team.

Make what you want of that little trivia.

Ps: despite guys like Anwar,Jayasuriya and even mediocre bats like Ijaz bashing Indian trundlers as a norm during the 90s, I used to love watching Anwar bat, especially his flick to square leg that I tried to imitate many times in Gully cricket :)

Anwar was a quality ODI batsmen. Arguably the best from Pakistan.

But the greatest ODI player and bowler across formats is Wasim Akram.

Cricket might be the only thing you have in your life but for others it's just a game :).

Ooo touched a nerve have we? I see Anwar still a thorn in the flesh for some Indian fans after all these years. :yk

I remember the Saeed Anwar 194 when he had a “17” year old Afridi running for him.

There is no way he would have survived the demands of modern day cricket. Would have been a good franchise free lance player though.

Best ODI 'player' has to be Akram

Best Pak ODI batsman is Yousuf from what I've seen

Anwar would have been an unstoppable beast in modern white ball cricket with these bats and all .

Best ever timer of the cricket ball from Pakistan.

Was a fantastic player. What wrong did Inzamam say? He said that Anwar was the best ODI batsman produced by Pakistan. And I'll definitely say that he is the best Pakistani batsman in the ODI format that I've seen till date.

It's not like Inzamam said Anwar was the best ODI batsman in the world during his time. People love to overreact.

The unfortunate demise of his daughter happened in 2001. By then Tendulkar was miles ahead of Anwar in terms of ODI centuries. SRT scored 9 ODI centuries in 1998 itself.

I've said it multiple times in the past, no Pakistani player scared me more than Saeed Anwar. He was absolutely marvelous against us. Was a pleasure to watch him play. Plus was an absolute gentleman on the field. A credit to the game.

Was a very watchable player but didn't play long enough to be remembered. I first noticed him was in 1996 world cup match against India but by around 2000 he was almost done. For those 3-4 years, I remember he was exceptionally good esp on subcontinent pitches.

A player who was massively pleasing to the eyes. Sadly under achieved.

As I said above his hitting skills might be more than useful for T20 or franchise cricket but those days of guys with questionable fitness standards like Anwar are long over.

As people have said he did bash Indian trundlers a lot in the 90s but I don’t recollect him turning up to field in any of those games.

He was a naturally gifted bat but his work ethic which is fielding and fitness wouldn’t fly in 2020

I think miandad and zaheer and even inzi were better bats. However he was my fav by a long shot. most stylist and pleasing to the eye. However as a person i find him disputable ( i assume he changed end of career till now). He came to one of our functions a few years back in NYC, set up by the consulate. I work for the UN so i was invited. Found his to be closed minded, misogynistic to the extreme and self righteous. Very unpleasant to be around unless you went along. Very similar to JUnaid Jamshedpur who was also there and had the same set of beliefs and ideas.

lol. Some duds are comparing him to tendulkar. it's like saying zaheer khan is as good as wasim akram.

he was only good against 80s 90s mediocre indian trundlers. Struggled vs any quality fast medium bowlers.

best Pakistani batsman would be younis khan in tests and babar in odi.

Anwar did pretty well in Australia in 1999-2000. That was a great attack. He also has a century against South Africa in South Africa and in England as well

Inzamam is probably the best ODI batsman Pakistan has produced. Saeed Anwar was good but he was probably not top 3.

In no particular order,

Anwar
Inzamam
Zaheer Abbas
Miandad

Four great ODI batsmen to come from Pakistan. Yousuf is next on line, similar to Amla in very good tier.

Inzamam ul Haq as captain and coach is the worst thing to happen to Pakistan cricket since the lost decade of the 60s. His blockage of domestic performers for his few favorites has devastated interest in cricket in Pakistan. He has done some long term damage.

Saeed Anwar is part of my childhood and an icon for me. He was/is/will be my favorite player as I took up cricket by watching him.Yes he is the best odi player of the world in the 90s and 2000s.I doubt I've made effort to watch a player like him and there are many in Pakistan who just watched Pakistan match live to see him play BUT Pakistan has had ODI cricketers better than him.

Waqar Younis, Javed Miandad, Imran Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Salim Malik and Salim Yousuf.

Most technically correct Salim Malik could play on any pitch on earth and take Pakistan away from problematic situation. Fighter Salim Yousuf was the chase master who once chased a 271 target with over 8-9 runs per over inthe 1980s when 220 in 50 overs was winning target and players could'nt make 4 runs per over. Never seen anyone fight for Pakistan team like him in the lower order. Have'nt seen the class like Zaheer Abbas ever. Javed Miandad is probably the greatest Pakistani batsman of all time. Imran Khan is one of the greatest all rounders that walked this planet earth. Waqar Younis literally bowled out opposition XIs in early 90s like no one did.

Anwars batting was as classy as you could get Superbly elegant and a beautiful timer

Id pay top dollar to watch him if he was around today

People criticise Inzamam for his record against Australia and South Africa, but Saeed Anwar averages 23 and 17 against them in ODIs !

Granted he had a much better record in Tests though.

Anwar was on a different planet to Yousuf, if you consider ODIs. Yousuf, for the majority of his career, was not a match-winner. Anwar has been one of the biggest match-winners in Pakistan history, and did it as an opener.

Never have seen a better player in cricket in terms of class and elegance. He under-achieved immensely.

Maindad, Inzy, Zaheer Abbas.

Anwar was good, but not the best Pakistani odi batsman.

Anwer had a SR of 80 as an opener in that era which is exceptional. His natural flare, range of strokes and ability to generate momentum at will were some extraordinary traits.

Bowed out in 2003 with a century which India chased with ease

There have been many pretenders after him including farhat, taufiq and Jamshed but there just show how good saeed really was

Probably one of the only Pakistanis of the 90s never to captain the team

I would put inzamam just above him though due to his match winning runs and his Incognisant approach to batting and field sledging

Just wonder how well we would have done if he had been around. Of course the reason he left is tragic and totally understandable.

I grew up watching and Inzi is absolutely right that there was no bigger star in batting than Saeed Anwer. I really hate this stat comparison as it is completely out of context. Saeed’s 30 had much much much greater impact than any middle order’s 70 as he faced the new ball from the beat in trade. Anyone who watched ODIs in 90s know that first 15 overs were the the most difficult part of the game as the most skilled bowlers used to bowl them. Middle overs were always deemed easy. And it was there that Saeed dominated with utter class. Stats cannot capture that. I am sure and I believe everybody knew that even Inzi and yousuf cannot negotiate the venom and quality that Saeed used to do regularly. And all this considering that he was also an exceptional player of spin as well!! We never expected see Saeed batting beyond first half(25 overs) and this was quite reasonable. Facing and dominating new ball first spell of McGrath, Vaas, Donald etc was never going to have same value as scoring against middle order overs by lesser bowlers. And he is literally the pioneer and trend setter of fast scoring opener genre. I remember cricinfo also publishing an article a while ago that explained how Saeed was the first one there....

Saeed was excellent although his best performances are in Asia.

I wish he performed better abroad but he was Pakistan's finest ODI opener, no questions asked.

As an overall ODI batsman he faces tough competition from Zaheer Abbas, Miandad and Inzi. Miandad had a good record in big tournaments and played tough bowling the longest out of any Pakistani batsmen.

I don't need to take a look at stats to state Anwar was top tier batsman in ODI cricket.

Babar? Anyone?

I don't think we even have to wait for his career to end to know that he is the greatest Pakistani batsman ever....

Anwar still tops the Century chart. Surprisingly he has more centuries than combined Miandad and Inzamam. But i still rate both of them above Anwar. But the way Babar is going in 7-8 years he would be the undisputed best Pak ODI batsman.

Anyone know by Zaheer Abbas didn't play more matches? He didn't have the longevity but that average, SR and the amount of hundreds in only 62 games when the scoring was is very impressive. Stats wise, he kinda looks like the best when adjusting for the era.
