Younis Khan has set himself the goal of becoming the first Pakistan batsman to score 10,000 Test runs but is unsure whether he has enough games in him to get there.

Pakistan's most prolific runscorer moved to within striking distance of becoming the 13th batsman to achieve the feat after his unbeaten 175 in the third Test against Australia on Friday.

He ran out of partners as Pakistan failed to fight back from a heavy first innings deficit but will get another opportunity when he pads up to help avoid a 3-0 series whitewash on day five.

Younis needs just 36 runs to join the likes of batting greats Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and the most recent inclusion, Alistair Cook.

At 39 years of age, Younis is unsure how much longer he has to achieve his dream.

"I'm very near 10,000 runs. This would be a big achievement for me as a Pakistani because if you see that list, there is no Pakistani who achieved 10,000 runs," he said.

"But it all depends on the team and the (Pakistan Cricket Board), how they want me. I will be keep in touch with them, as they tell me what they need from me.

"Then I will decide how long I will play. My body is responding well at the moment."

Achieving the feat would go a long way to stamping Younis' standing as arguably the greatest player from Pakistan - a status he shied away from on Friday.

"I can't feel that I will be the greatest ever Pakistani player of all time. That list, you will see that Javed Miandad is there, Zaheer Abbas is there. There's a lot of great players," he said.

"But I want from people, my critics and my followers, (that) whenever I play, I play for my country and team. That is more important for me.

"When I retire, this is my vision - they all remember me as a fighter who played for his country."

Yes. Yes, we will, Younis bhai. Pakistan ki shan; Younis Khan, Younis Khan!

ATG batsman and despite his humility, he's arguably better than Javed and Pakistan's GOAT.

Younis wants to bat on for Pakistan

Pakistan great Younis Khan says he wants to carry on playing Test cricket for his country as he nears the summit of 10,000 Test runs.

Younis, at 39, in the autumn of a trail-blazing 17-year playing career, reached another milestone with his first century in Australia in the current third Sydney match, makingh a Test hundred in 11 countries.

But Younis, who is just 36 runs away from becoming the first Pakistani batsman to score 10,000 Test runs, said he wants to bat on for Pakistan if "they want me."

"It all depends on my team and what they want. That's the main thing for me," Younis told reporters after scoring an unbeaten 175 for his 34th Test century at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"It's not about that I’m near 10,000 runs which will be a big achievement as a Pakistani.

"If you see that list there is no Pakistani who has achieved 10,000 runs so it all depends on my team and depend on PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and how they want me.

Younis refused to be called Pakistan's greatest batsman, despite the weight of statistical evidence of his run scoring.

"I can't feel that I’ll be the greatest Pakistani (player)," he said.

"On that list you see Javed Miandad is there, Zaheer Abbas is there. There are a lot of great players there. Inzamam (ul-Haq) is also there.

"I don't feel I will be the greatest batsman ever for Pakistan.

"But I want people and my critics and followers to know that whenever I play, I play for my country and play for my team. That is more important for me."

Younis said he was a "happy man" that he was able to break through for his first century in Australia with his 334-ball batting epic with 17 fours and three sixes.

"At least I have made a hundred in Australia because the previous time I was out for 87 in the the 2004 Boxing Day Test (Melbourne).

Younis began the Australia series sluggishly with just a half-century in his first four innings before he carried Pakistan's first innings in Sydney.

He said he had not done anything special to fight his way back into form.

"If anyone criticises me, I take that very positively and I respond through my performances," he said.

"At the same time I feel under a little bit of pressure as well but I make myself calm and cool and this has worked for me.

Younis will be a key batsman as Pakistan attempt to salvage the final Test, trailing by 409 runs with nine second innings remaining on Saturday's final day.

Moment of silence as his haters pull their hair out.

He always comes across as a troll after every performance. Rarely thanks the support staff, always talking about how he takes everything constructively but always with potshot at well deserved criticism

Lol best was in England where he effectively said that coaching staffs are duds and know nothing and all it took to fix his glitch was a call from Azharuddin

Was expecting him to thank manoj prabjarkar or robin singh after his knock today

I am not a hater but I would have been more happy if his 175 came in the 1st or 2nd Test. Anyways good performance here in third test.

To many it appears that scoring runs in Australia is some walk in the park.

It isn't. Still thats no excuse of failing again and again in such conditions. This one hundred shouldn't change the fact that younis failed to deliver again and again when the series was alive and his team needed him to step up as their best batsman.

This is only younis' second hundred in a dead rubber btw

Love how Younis stumps people when they least expect him to. :yk

Well fighter he is, even the ones with most antagonistic feelings about him would agree.

Thanks. Didnt know that. But this doesnt prove that he has scored in many meaningful games outside UAE.

Also i was talking about his current lack of form. He failed in england (apart from one innings) , NZ and now in australia apart from this useless hundered.

I will give him some credit if he turns up in fourth innings and saves the match.

He is one of the top test batsman of Pakistan clearly in top 3 if not the best. People who say Anwar or Inzi was better than him have not seen them playing I guess. Younis is in competition with moyo for class and javed miandad for ability and courage as a figher and I think Younis is fine blend of both.

He got numbers and stats to back him he got 100 in every test nation and soon he will get his 10000 runs so Kudos and a lot of respect.

Surely if this match gets saved his first innings hundred will have contributed to it no?

Or is it only 4th innings hundreds that saves games?

True. His first innings hundred will become important only if this match is saved somehow regardless of whether he contributes in the 4th innings or not. But surely a good performance in the fourth innings will enhance his overall contribution should Pakistan draw this.

All the respect to pakistani legend , guys like zaheer abbas , inzamam ,moyo ,anwar were more talented but younis has made it possible through sheer grit , determination and stubborness. Misbah and younis are probably last of the breed of pakistanis who played spin very well (sarfraz is there as well). Get your 10000 in this match and retire with honor.

Dead rubber or not ,it was a great knock. Pakistan were down and out and under pressure and save for his innings probably would have got out under 150. If people are not interested in dead rubber performances , they should not be watching dead rubbers at all.

He ll certainly be remembered as one of the very best from pakistan

What youve got to remember is hes never been the prettiest batsman not the most talented His success is all down to his hard work and his mental strength, drive and determination

Hes conquered every hurdle life as thrown at him (it doesnt get tougher than losing 5/6 close family members within a few years) and hes racked up great numbers consistently in spite of this which no pakistani has ever done

Hes not at his best like he was 3/4 years back and at age 40 plus thats not a surprise but hes still probably the 2nd best batsman in the team and still has the ability to hit big tonz

I doubt there ll ever be another younis khan Someone whos punched well above his weight and given respectability to a team in turmoil post 2010

Our one last world class batsman Enjoy him whilst you can

Great player with great stats. Like someone already mentioned, people think its a walk in the park to score in Australia. The fact that he did, no matter what the situation, is what counts. So what if he didn't get 100's in previous games? Why is he to be blamed for the losses earlier? Is he the only bat in the team?

Completely backing him to go to WI, score big hundreds, improve his record there, get his average up to 55 and and call it a day as an ATG.

You just play to prolong your career, not good. You did not score when Pakistan was losing series in New Zealand and Australia and now scoring a century in dead rubber and on flat wicket you're making it a big deal. Please retire now.

Younis has nothing to prove to anyone. Pak fans who dislike him either know nothing about Cricket or have a personal grudge against him. He has been one of the very few good to great batsmen Pakistan has produced over the past 20 years. Haters will only realise his value once he has retired and we have replaced him with more mediocrity.

Will remember him as a FTB who blackmailed his way into the team by throwing tantrums on television.

We are already losing 100% of test matches in aus and NZL, how can we go lower without YK?

Can't believe someone with a 50+ average is being seen as an average cricketer here.

If that's not enough he won you guys a world cup too in 2009

Great Servant of Pakistan Cricket.

That century against Steyn, Philander etc in S.A was a great memory for me...People calling him FTB dont realize how he had played some gem innings in hardest of conditions..

The point is that Younis has scored plenty of runs for Pak over the years. He can't defeat Aus and NZ on his own.
