"I was a bit disappointed with the overall performance in the second ODI against SL" : Mickey Arthur

Mickey Arthur, Pakistan's head coach, urged his players to keep their winning momentum intact as they prepare for the third One-Day International against Sri Lanka that will be played on Wednesday (October 18) in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan has a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, with a convincing 83-run win in the first ODI in Dubai followed by a scrappy, hard-fought 32-run triumph in the second ODI, a result that took the team's winning sequence to six games.

Arthur, however, felt Pakistan could still do better in its overall performance.

"I was a bit disappointed with the overall performance in the second game," he said. "I think the partnership between Babar (Azam) and Shadab (Khan) was good, but we lacked a little bit in the intensity in our overall performance. We were still good enough to win which was great."

Reeling at 101 for 6, Pakistan recovered through a seventh-wicket stand of 109 between Azam and Shadab. Azam hit his second successive hundred, while Shadab hit a career-best 52 not out to lift Pakistan to 219 for 9.

Sri Lankan too recovered from a struggling 93 for 7 with a stand of 76 between Upul Tharanga (112 not out) and Jeffrey Vandersay (22), but in the end it was not enough to avoid a ninth consecutive defeat - the team's worst losing streak since 1987.

"We bowled well to defend that low total," said Arthur of his team's bowling, led by Shadab's 3 for 47. "I think our bowling was great."

However, the coach called for no let-up in intensity on the field. "It seemed that we have just taken the foot off the pedal. But the real positive was that the guys fought really well and fought for each other,” held Arthur. “The attitudes have been good and I cannot find fault the commitment and the work ethic of the team.

"I am hoping that we turn it around and put in a really good performance. It’s six in a row for us, which is great and we want to keep building on that and keep this winning record going for as long as we possibly can because this provides stability and provides us the confidence we need going forward.”

Arthur said Pakistan's standards in the first game were excellent. "Our standards were good and we continued on the road that we wanted to continue on. We batted well, put runs on the board and then attacked with the ball and put them under pressure in the first game."

The home team is likely to persist with Ahmed Shehzad, the out-of-form opener, for one more game before giving the uncapped Imam-ul-Haq a go – perhaps after the lead gets unassailable.

On the other side, Sri Lanka needs to overturn the losing habit before the series goes out of its hands.

Tharanga lamented Monday's loss.

"We were disappointed to lose on Monday," said he captain, who became the first Sri Lankan and the 11th batsman in ODI history to carry his bat through an innings. "Vandersay batted well too, but when you're 90 for 7, it's a tough task. It was good to carry the bat, but I’m disappointed with the result. We need a quick turnaround."

Sri Lanka may replace Milinda Siriwardana with Chamara Kapugedara in an attempt to bolster the batting, which has not crossed 250 in the team's last seven games.

Really got to question Imad's role. He has done zilch in the series yet Arthur keeps persisting with him. What about tactics? Lankans have like 9 left handers in their team.

So what is it about him?

Well he shouldnt be disappointed What do u expect when u keep sending out shazad to open, Hafeez at 4, imad whos not batting or bowlin or sarfraz as a specialist captain only?

If ur playing with 7-8 players the team will struggle

If he's not getting the bowling how is that his fault ?? Sarfraz should utilise him better.

Also he got a decent ball in the last match when he was batting, can't be said for the rest.

Were you watching the same match?

His feet were glued to the crease and he was batting liking a tail-ender.

Looked clueless against the spinners.

Contrast it with Shadab's innings and you see how poorly Imad batted.

In last 2 years (1st Oct 15), Ahmed's stats are

11 - 11- 177 runs @ 16.09/59.79, 1 fifty (67) & another innings of 25+ (32) - and these are matches played against WI (3), NZ (2), SRL (2), ZIM (2), ENG (1), IND (1). PAK has lost 5 (NZ -2, ENG, WI, IND) and has won rest 6.

Remarkable....

His feet were not glued actually - he came forward but he didn't have a big enough stride hence the ball was just in line.

It was a good ball - you do know that the bowlers can give you good deliveries ??

What about the rest of the garbage dismissals ??

And if he's in the team why is he not getting just a few overs as a bowler ?? The captain should use him better.

If you want him out then have someone better otherwise players like Shehzad who have done nothing for 2 years should be out before him.

Some of you just have memories of a fish or personal grudges.

Yes, it was ball of the century. It was one of the worst innings I have seen in a long time. He was swinging from the hip and looked utterly clueless.

We are discussing Imad Wasim, stop shifting goalposts by trying to discuss everyone else's performance.

Captain does not have to use him better. Sarfaraz obviously thinks there are/were better options available, and given Pakistan won both matches I would say he made the right call. That makes Imad surplus to requirements, in which case he shouldn't play. As I said, he is a complete passenger in the ODI team.

That's before I mention the two reasons Imad didn't bowl:

(i) His bowling average this year is 61.42, which is pathetic. Pakistan were looking to take quick wickets in both games and therefore he wasn't the right man to go to.

(ii) SL have 6/7 left handers in their batting line up which makes Imad even less effective. That is why Sarfaraz bowled with two off-spinners.

To be honest, this is pretty basic stuff and you are demonstrating your lack of cricketing knowledge by making these silly arguments.

Why should we settle for mediocrity? Look at my post history and you will see I have repeatedly said Shehzad should be dropped. But keeping one bad player in the team is not a justification for keeping another bad player in the team. Imad's batting is not good enough neither is his bowling. He needs to go so Pakistan can strengthen their line up with Ashraf and/or Haris.

You can use as many insults as you want, but the fact of the matter is Imad is a complete passenger in the team. If his fan-boys can't accept that, then so be it.

Ahmed Shehzad will be lucky if he gets picked again. Pakistan might stick with the winning combination though.

What a load of nonsense and waffle.

Like I said you are a narrow minded personal grudges against certain players fan.

Yours is directed against Imad while ignoring everything else.

So you can't respond to logic and facts, so you decide to throw insults instead? How mature of you. Just remember for next time, it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

For the record I have criticised everyone who deserved it, which includes (i) Hafeez (ii) Shehzad (iii) Babar (poor fielding) (iv) Sarfaraz (poor recent form) etc. I am afraid it is you who is too busy fan-boying to recognising the harsh reality that Imad is a passenger in the ODI team.

One reason which makes Imad important for the team in the current series is his ability to hit the ball hard at the death overs which he doesn't do regularly but atleast show glimpses sometimes.

As Srilanka has batting line up full of lefties and only two right handers in the top order Sarfaraz relies more on hafeez as we all know pretty good against lefties.

Imad would be relied heavily against teams with a lot of right handers in the top order as we saw in CT 17 against SA or Eng.

Fahim is a good option as a lower order hitter as he can be groomed in this series but you cant risk dropping an experienced player with a younger one without any big reason and in middle of the series. Fahim's bowling will also be as less utilized as Imad's considering we are playing in UAE and already have three pacers in the squad.

Fingers crossed hopefully we can win this match and then can try some benched players.
