"I was being threatened that I would be ripped to pieces" : Aaqib Javed on speaking against fixing

KARACHI: Former Test pacer Aaqib Javed says that the Pakistan cricket system punishes whistle-blowers, reiterating that the reason he was kicked out of the national set-up at the peak of his career and then was never appointed the head coach was due to his aversion and criticism of corruption in the team.

“My career ended prematurely because I spoke against fixing. I was being threatened that I would be ripped to pieces. If you are vocal against fixing then you can only go to a certain extent in your career. This is why I was not able to become the head coach [of Pakistan],” Aaqib told a private news channel.

Right-armer Aqib said that punishing cricketers was the low-hanging fruit as he questioned why the mafia and the masterminds were never reprimanded.

“This mafia runs very deep and once you enter it you can never come back. Many a cricketers were punished but the mafia was never identified. Both of them should be punished and this menace will only go away through severe punishments and lifetime bans.Aaqib, who is now the head coach of Lahore Qalandars, passed those remarks after his former team-mate Saleem Malik — banned for life in 2000 on the recommendation of Justice Qayyum Commission -- issued a plea for pardon.

The former fast bowler said that the commission was deliberately kept in the dark, once again pushing the long-held notion that many more were involved in fixing but only a few were punished.

“Facts were hidden even in Justice Qayyum Commission. I had told the court that fixing is not done by one but five to six players. I told Justice Qayyum that my testimony was based on what I had seen with my own eyes and heard with my ears,” he said as he admitted that “digging a 20-year-old issue will reap nothing.”

When so many former players are saying it, they probably aren't lying.

The day Aqib becomes our head coach is the day I stop watching Pakistan cricket. The biggest service anyone can do to Pakistan cricket is to keep him at minimum 3km away from Shaheen and Naseem. Agree with the headline though

Yeh kaun hai, jis ke pichey awaam pargi,

Looks like IK ka Naya Pakistan is not suiting some Pakistani’s.

Kia apne aap ka mu kala karey rai hai

:)))

"I wasn't treated well. I couldn't do much at the PCB" - so, yes, fixing fixing everywhere.

Fixing is the only explanation these screw loose jealous ex-cricketers know.

Do these ppl know the definition of fixing?

It’s not the same fixing you do on your car or bicycle.

I don't disbelieve what Aqib's saying but I'd take his anti-corruption stance more seriously if he hadn't welcomed Salman Butt to LQ with open arms.

Most Pakistani cricketers don’t have manner and worst is Amir Sohail he threw his wicket in 1996 QF against India reason for loss of match and thereafter shamelessly blaming Wasim Akram , Amir Sohail was after 3-4 years of his career was average player though he thinks he is bigger than Imran khan it’s kind of sickness .

He got Salman Butt the gig. He asked LQ management to sign Salman

Aquib Javed is just pathetic. This was the guy who agreed that Sharjeel deliberately played a dot ball during Sharjeel's trial, while actual batsman like Yousuf and Dean Jones denied it and said Sharjeel did play shots and one almost left the fielder's clutches. Till date we still don't have evidence agianst Sharjeel, and this guy just judged him right away.

Take his words with a pinch of salt. He's a bloody liar.

Exactly! And based on what he said about threats and that if he speaks against them, he was told he would be ripped to shreds...can he share some evidence of that?

Also, if that was the case and true, Latif, Basit, Aamir Sohail etc. would be dead a long time ago, cause of death: Shredded in to pieces by someone :-)

It is sort of like Shoaib (re: Kaneria mistreatment), you now decide to speak up after all the years and want everyone to accept your word as the gospel of truth...ain't gonna happen anytime soon!

Seems like “fixing” is the flavour of the month at the moment, I wonder who will come out next. The lockdown is definitely taking its toll.

I can't find the part where he said that he went to the ICC to report these issues.

Some of these cricketers forgetting that once the Coronavirus situation improves and cricket starts, they will have to face up to each other at grounds etc - awkward moments

I was also asked to fix matches: Aaqib Javed

Former pacer Aaqib Javed has once against jolted pillars of Pakistan cricket by opening another fixing scam.

According to local media, the 47-year-old has claimed that players were offered lavish cars and millions of rupees in return for fixing matches.

“Lavish cars and millions of rupees were handed over to a cricketer,” claimed Javed. “I was also asked to fix matches and was told that if I did not comply, my career would be finished.”

The pacer, who represented Pakistan in 22 Tests and 163 One-day-internationals, claimed that bookies approach players through former cricketer Saleem Pervez.

“Players were approached with match-fixing offers through a former cricketer named Saleem Pervez,” Javed said about Pervez, who played his only ODI against West Indies in 1980 and passed away in April 2013.

In an interview, Aaqib Javed recently said that Justice Qayyum censored most of his 1.5 hour statement and only 2-3 sentences made it to the final report.
