IPL 2017: I was too star struck by Wasim Akram, says Jaydev Unadkat

Jaydev Unadkat has been exceptional in this season with 22 wickets for Rising Pune Supergiant. In 2015 he was bought for Rs 1.60 crore by Delhi Daredevils, but after playing just one match for Delhi no one would have expected a comeback with this much consistency as he has shown in this season.

Ashok Dinda failed to impress in this IPL and as a result, Pune decided to go with the 25-year-old who never disappointed his team management and came up with some match winning bowling performances. As of now he remains the second highest wicket taker in the IPL after Bhuvneshwar Kumar and can try his luck for clinching the Purple cap.

Unadkat has become Steve Smith’s first choice when it comes to bowling in a pressure situation with his ability to bowl slower deliveries and off-cutters at the death. He can also swing new ball both ways, which increases the chance to take quick wickets in powerplay overs. For his success in this season, Unadkat gives his entire credit to Pakistan bowling legend, Wasim Akram, with whom he worked two years back while playing for KKR.

“I was too star struck by Akram. But I did manage to learn the art of swing bowling from him. I also learnt different ways of gripping the ball which I was not aware of. I have come a long way but the lessons with Akram taught me the basics of bowling,” Unadkat told TOI.
Unadkat has been successful in terms of bowling economically well at 7.24 this season. But he gave a lot of credit to his captain Steve Smith and Mahendra Singh Dhoni for setting up accurate field placements which have helped him a lot.

“Both Smith and (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni bhai know my strengths so well that they set the fields most of the time. These two guys work in tandem. If one is handling the bowlers, other instructs the fielders. In the end, I am only focused on my bowling,” said Unadkat.

Unadkat had to work really hard on his bowling and action as well when he was making a comeback in 2014. He took 40 wickets in his comeback to Ranji Trophy but in other shorter format, he was still struggling to make a mark.

“The change of action was more to do with my non-bowling arm. Earlier, the momentum was going backwards and I had to exert more force. But now, my body is in sync with my action at the point of delivery. With this reworked action, I am able to impart more pace,” said Unadkat.

In this IPL season, Unadkat has made a massive comeback and one of the reason has been his controlled aggression and change of attitude. He expressed his thoughts on playing for the Indian team.

“I don’t want to think about national call-ups and lose my focus. My immediate target is to develop my yorkers during the off-season after the IPL. Since I was getting success with my cutters and slower ones this season, I didn’t want to try anything new,” Unadkat said.

Left-arm quick Jaydev Unadkat featured in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Dhaka, 12 years after he last played for India in 2010.

Unadkat played his second Test match and took his first ever wicket for India in the format 12 years after his debut Test match in South Africa in 2010.

The long gap of 12 years and 2 days makes this the longest interval between Test appearances for any player in the 21st century. The left-arm quick missed 118 Test matches in this time frame.

Only England's off-spinner Gareth Batty, who made a comeback in 2016 in Bangladesh after previously appearing in a Test match in 2005, has missed more Test matches (142 matches).

The closest any Indian has gotten to this is when Dinesh Karthik made a Test comeback in 2018, eight years after he played a Test, missing 87 Test matches in between.

Speaking of his comeback, Unadkat said on BCCI.tv, "I have visualised this moment maybe 1000 times in between the first Test I played and now."

"I didn't get a wicket back then and that was the talk everytime people talk about me getting an opportunity again for the Indian team."

"I actually missed playing with the red ball. Honestly, it wasn't just about getting that Test recall, but it was also about getting to play the Ranji Trophy season."

Jaydev Unadkat rewrote history books by becoming the first cricketer to pick up a hat-trick in the first over of a Ranji Trophy game. The Saurashtra captain, whose international career has got a new lease of life with a stunning comeback against Bangladesh, started 2023 with a bang in a Ranji Trophy Group C match in Rajkot on Tuesday. Unadkat missed Saurashtra's first two matches this season due to India commitments but the left-arm fast bowler made an impact like never before in his first red-ball cricket appearance this season.

Delhi, who are missing a number of their first-XI cricketers due to injuries, were rendered clueless in front of Unadkat's mastery. The left-arm pacer dismissed in-form Delhi batter and current highest scorer of this season, Dhruv Shorey, in the third ball of the match after the visitors opted to bat. Vaibhav Rawal and Delhi captain Yash Dhull were sent packing for golden ducks as Unadkat completed his hat-trick. Rawa edged one to keeper Harvik Desai while Dhull was trapped right in front of the wickets. The previous quickest Ranji Trophy hat-trick belonged to Karnataka's Vinay Kumar who had completed the same in the span of first and third over.

Unadkat wasn't done. After a dream first over that shell-shocked Delhi, the veteran of 97 first-class matches, struck twice in his next over to complete a five-wicket haul - 21st of his glittering first-class career - in his second over. Jonty Sidhu (4) and debutant Lakshay Thareja (1) were his victims in this over.

In between Unadkat's mayhem, there was no respite for Delhi from the other end as Chirag Jani dismissed debuant Ayush Badoni for a three-ball duck. Delhi were reduced to 5/6 at the end of 3 overs.

Jani's second over was the only wicketless over in the match over and it would remain so at least till the fifth over as Unadkat removed Lalit Yadav in his third. Delhi lost 7 wickets for only 10 runs on the board. As many as five of their top six batters were out for a duck - four of them fell to Unadkat.

Thankfully, Pranshu Vijayran and Hrithik Shokeen addressed the slump and somehow saved Delhi from the embarrasement of registering the lowest total in Ranji Trophy - 21 by Hyderabad against Rajasthan in 2010-11.

Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat has been ruled out of the IPL 2023 due to a left shoulder injury that he sustained on Sunday while practising in the nets. Since he is a part of India squad for World Test Championship final against Australia, which will begin on June 7 at The Oval, it is very crucial for him to recover for the tournament.

On Sunday Unadkat was bowling his first ball in the Lucknow nets when his left foot got stuck in the rope that keeps the net up. He had an awkward fall in which his hurt his shoulder. The video of Unadkat's getting injured was shared by Indian Premier League's official Twitter handle.

Sussex Cricket is delighted to announce that India Test bowler Jaydev Unadkat will return to the Club in 2024 for the final five games of the County Championship campaign

Unadkat joined up with Sussex for three of the final four County Championship games last season, having an immediate impact by taking 11 wickets at 24.18, helping Sussex to a third-place finish in Division 2.

His best performance came against Leicestershire on his home debut at The 1st Central County Ground, when he took 6 second-innings wickets whilst nursing an ankle injury to give Sussex a third win of the County Championship campaign.

The left-armer tore through the Leicestershire batting line up in the final session of the final day as Sussex won by just 15 runs.

Speaking on bringing Unadkat back for the end of the 2024 campaign, Sussex Head Coach, Paul Farbrace said: “We are all delighted that Jaydev is returning to The 1st Central County Ground for the final five championship matches of the coming season.

“Jaydev lived up to the expectation that not only would he show his class on the field, but he would also be a fantastic person and be part of what we are all trying to achieve.

“Jaydev is a lovely guy who did everything he could to help our players and share his fantastic knowledge.

And Unadkat himself cannot wait to get back to Hove: “It was at Hove last season when we won a last-day thriller against Leicestershire, that gave me a sense of belongingness to county cricket, and to Sussex as my home.

“When Farby offered me a contract this season for the last leg of the championship, I was sure I wanted to come back and hopefully win games with the guys.

“While my first county season was good, I can’t wait to be back and push for that promotion this summer which everyone at Hove is rooting for!”

Unadkat signs new two-year deal with Sussex

India seamer Jaydev Unadkat has signed a new two-year deal with Sussex for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

The 32-year-old played the final five County Championship matches this year and helped Sussex win the Division Two title.

Unadkat took 22 wickets at an average of just 14.4 in 202, and 15 in three games the previous season.

"I can’t wait to be back for the next season and further," he told the club's website, external.

"I would like to thank Farby [Paul Farbrace] and everyone in the team for making me feel like I belong here.

"I had a fabulous time with the boys on our way to winning the Division Two title and I would like to congratulate everyone at Sussex, including our passionate fans."

Head coach Farbrace said everyone at the club is "pleased and excited" Unadkat has extended his stay.

"Jaydev’s quality on the pitch has been so evident for everyone to see, but just as importantly his qualities as a person make him one of the most popular and nicest guys any team could wish for," Farbrace said.

Unadkat has made 22 appearances for India including eight one-day internationals and four Tests, most recently against West Indies in July 2023.

He also plays domestic cricket in India for Saurashtra and Indian Premier League (IPL) side Sunrisers Hyderabad.

This guy is amongst the luckiest cricketers I've ever seen. He literally was the worst bowler for Rajasthan in Ipl yet he was bought for Million dollars by Rajasthan several times in IPL auction. That was weird.

One of the worst piece of crap utter trash bowlers to come out of india.

He takes wickets in bundles vs some of the lesser ranked ranji state teams to pad up his stats. Against quality bats even in ranji he struggles mostly

He is a trundler. A complete dud cannon fodder of the highest order. He makes dinda look express.

I have never seen a more hapless clueless gutless spineless bowler than this guy.
