Bumrah nominated for ICC Men’s Player of the Month for second month running, joined by fellow World Test Championship wicket-takers, Cummins and Paterson

Mandhana, Mlaba and Sutherland among the nominees for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for eye-catching performances across all formats

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today unveiled the shortlists in contention for the ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month awards for December 2024, celebrating the outstanding individual performances on the international stage during the calendar month.

Following a gripping month of action in the race to the ICC World Test Championship Final, the nominees for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month comprise standout wicket-takers from India, Australia and South Africa.

India’s Jasprit Bumrah is nominated for the second month in succession after continued spells of destructive bowling in India’s efforts in the enthralling Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. Victorious Australia skipper Pat Cummins also earns his way onto the shortlist following decisive bowling spells, as Australia edged ahead with wins in Adelaide and Melbourne in December. Completing the lineup is South Africa’s Dane Paterson, whose 13 wickets across two Tests helped South Africa become the first team to qualify for the WTC Final at Lord’s in June.

Australia, South Africa and India are also represented among the contenders for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award.

Talismanic Indian batter Smriti Mandhana scored heavily during December, notching notable scores in Australia and against the West Indies on home soil. Nonkululeko Mlaba is nominated for the first time after historic wicket-taking feats in South Africa’s Test against England at Bloemfontein. Australia’s all-round sensation Annabel Sutherland is the final name on the shortlist after shining with the bat and ball during the month, hitting back-to-back centuries against India and New Zealand alongside valuable wickets.

An independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world will now be invited to cast their votes to decide the winners, which will be announced next week. Fans are now able to vote for their favourite performers at icc-cricket.com/awards.

ICC Men’s Player of the Month Nominees for December:

Jasprit Bumrah (IND)

The world’s number one ranked Test bowler ended the year as strongly as he performed through it, with 22 wickets during his three Test outings in December. With Australia growing in confidence during the series, Bumrah was the primary resisting force, starring in spells of four for 61 in Adelaide, six for 76 in Brisbane, and in the nine-wicket performance in Melbourne which saw him reach the highest rating points tally by any Indian bowler in history. Bumrah will be hoping to win his second Player of the Month crown, and elsewhere, claim the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in the ICC Awards 2024 following a dazzling year.

Pat Cummins (Aus)

Australia’s captain inspired a memorable fightback from the 1-0 series deficit with stirring performances in December’s Tests that featured 144 runs and 17 wickets at 17.64. After the disappointment of Perth, last year’s ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year ripped through the Indian batting lineup in the second innings in Adelaide, taking five for 57 to secure a ten-wicket victory from which they prospered. Arguably his highlight came in Melbourne, where, after his first innings 49, he helped his side recover from 91 for six with valuable lower order runs (41) before removing India’s top three batters as Australia won by 184 runs and took the upper hand in the thrilling series.

Dane Paterson (SA)

The South African seamer is nominated for the first time for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award, and does so after 13 wickets on a successful return to the Proteas Test side. Recalled for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha, Paterson immediately repaid the faith with a Player of the Match performance, claiming his first Test five-for with the wickets of Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Mendis and Lahiru Kumara in one over in his first innings return of five for 71. The spell proved crucial in the 109-run win and Paterson backed it up with more heroics with a probing five for 61 in the nail-biting victory over Pakistan that saw South Africa seal their place at Lord’s in what will be their first ICC World Test Championship Final.

ICC Women’s Player of the Month Nominees for December:

Smriti Mandhana (IND)

The Indian opener is hoping to win her second ICC Women’s Player of the Month crown after 463 runs during a calendar month packed with ODI and T20I action. The 28-year-old hit 270 runs in her six 50-over contests, headlined by a sublime 105 against Australia at Perth. On the back of that performance, Mandhana then took apart the travelling West Indies bowling unit, hitting half-centuries in three successive T20Is and two further ODIs, taking home the Player of the Series prize in the former.

Nonkululeko Mlaba (SA)

The South African strike bowler wrote her name into the history books in December thanks to a memorable display against England in their solitary Test at Bloemofontein. Following a modest showing in the ODIs that preceded the contest, Mlaba came to life in the longest format, extracting turn from the surface to take four wickets and a run out in the first innings, before six more in the second saw her become the first South African female to take ten wickets in a Test match.

Annabel Sutherland (AUS)

The 23-year-old all-rounder enjoyed a fruitful end to 2024, helping her earn nominations for both the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year and the Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year. December began with wickets in Brisbane and the seamer took four for 39 in a comfortable victory in the second ODI against India. The third ODI saw Sutherland hit three figures, smashing 110 in 98 balls to claim the Player of the Series, and she followed that performance with another century across the Tasman Sea, striking a brisk, unbeaten 105 in 81 balls in their opening victory over New Zealand. The second ODI saw her hit another 42 runs and take three wickets, as she won another Player of the Series prize.

The ICC Player of the Month Voting Process:

The three nominees for either category are shortlisted based on performances from the first to the last day of each calendar month. The shortlist is then voted on by the independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world. December began with four for 39 with the ball in a commanding victory over India in the second ODI in Brisbane, before she followed up in explosive fashion with the bat – striking 110 in 98 balls in the final match to claim the Player of the Series prize.

The subsequent series against New Zealand across the Tasman Sea saw another display of batting prowess, and the 23-year-old hit a statement 105 runs in just 81 balls en route to opening victory by 65 runs (DLS).

The second matchup saw her hit another 42 runs and take three wickets, as Australia claimed back-to-back ODI series sweeps and Sutherland a second successive Player of the Series accolade.

The all-rounder is another in contention for ICC Awards 2024 success, and is nominated in both ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year category and the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

ICC Women’s Player of the Month, Annabel Sutherland: “December was a great month for us and it was nice to be able to contribute to the team's success.

"We've got great depth within the squad so to be able make the most of the opportunities to spend some time out in the middle was really pleasing.

"Those ODIs were really important for us ahead of the upcoming Women’s Cricket World Cup, and it was great to be able to win both series against India and New Zealand."

On the opposing side in a memorable final was New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, also nominated after another stellar ICC event where he was crowned the Player of the Tournament. He helped India progress through the middle overs with his masterful stroke-play and his knack for anchoring the innings and forging crucial partnerships played a vital role in steering his side through a victorious campaign.

On winning the accolade, Iyer said: "I’m truly honored to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for March. This recognition is incredibly special, especially in a month where we lifted the ICC Champions Trophy — a moment I will cherish forever.

"Being able to contribute to India’s success on such a big stage is something every cricketer dreams of. I’m grateful to my teammates, coaches, and support staff for their unwavering support and belief.

"A heartfelt thank you to the fans as well — your energy and encouragement keep us going every step of the way."

The 30-year-old scored 172 runs across three matches in March, averaging 57.33, with a modest strike rate of 77.47, which included some spectacular knocks.

Iyer scored 79 off 98 balls which included 4 fours and 2 sixes in a win against New Zealand in a Group A fixture of the Champions Trophy, an innings that gave India a competitive total of 250 in the first innings on a tricky pitch.

He scored 45 off 62 balls to assist in India’s victorious chase over Australia in the semi-finals and finished his tournament with a clinical 48 off 62 balls as India sealed victory over New Zealand in the summit clash.

Well deserved. Shreyas was key in us winning CT.

An award for softies. What is this garbage?

How about award for player of the week and player of the weekend as well?

I support this initiative as it will help associate players get some recognition at times. Doesn't mean much for Full member players.

It is the most pointless cricket award of all time.

A yearly award is enough; no need for a monthly award. :inti

A fiery speedster from Zimbabwe, an established all-rounder from Bangladesh and a key Kiwi pacer make up the nominees for ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2025.

Blessing Muzarabani (Zimbabwe)

A towering pacer with a whip-like action, Muzarabani has been phenomenal for Zimbabwe in April 2025, most notably in the Test series against Bangladesh.

The 28-year-old was at his best in the first Test in Sylhet as he dominated the Bangladesh batting unit. He picked up figures of 3/50 in the first innings, which included the wicket of Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Muzarabani went three better in the second innings as he ran through the Bangladesh batting lineup with figures of 6/72, as his performance guided Zimbabwe to a three-wicket win and helped him secure the Player of the Match award.

Muzarabani also finished as Zimbabwe’s top wicket-taker in the series with 10 wickets across two Tests at an average of 20.50.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Bangladesh)

A versatile all-rounder, Mehidy Hasan Miraz shone for Bangladesh in the Test series against Zimbabwe.

The 27-year-old was in form in both the Tests played. In the first Test at Sylhet, he was in good touch with the ball as he took back-to-back five-wicket hauls.

He picked up 5/52 in the first innings and 5/50 in the second innings to keep the hosts in the contest, even though Zimbabwe eventually overcame the onslaught to secure a three-wicket victory.

Player of the match Mehidy Hasan Miraz starred with bat and ball as Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan in their opening clash of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023

The second Test was one to remember for Miraz as he found his rhythm with both bat and ball.

After Zimbabwe had been bowled out for a modest total in the first innings, Miraz scored 104 off 162 balls in the first innings to anchor the Bangladesh batting effort and further it advantage. He followed it up with another five-wicket haul in Zimbabwe's second innings and recorded figures of 5/32 as Bangladesh tied the series with a win by an innings and 106 runs in Chattogram.

Mehidy finished April with 116 runs in two Tests at an average of 38.66 and 15 wickets at an average of 11.86 in a spectacular month for the all-rounder.

Ben Sears (New Zealand)

Ben Sears was in fine form in New Zealand’s ODI series against Pakistan.

The 27-year-old was on a rampage as he picked up back-to-back five-wicket hauls in the final two ODIs of the series.

In the second ODI of the series in Hamilton, Sears ran through the Pakistan middle order as he claimed the wickets of Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha in a fine bowling performance and finished with figures of 5/59, guiding the Kiwis to an 84-run victory and sealing the series.

In the final ODI in Mount Maunganui, he once again produced a sensational bowling performance as he picked another five-for with figures of 5/34 off his nine overs. New Zealand secured a 43-run victory and a clean sweep in the ODI series 3-0.

Sears was named Player of the Series as he collected 10 wickets at an average of 9.30 at an economy rate of 5.07 to cap off a fantastic April.
