ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2018 - Discussion Thread

NOB is legit one of the best keepers in the world. Fantastic behind the stumps

An insane catch to finish the game!

If that edge had gone to the fence for 4, who knows what the result of the game may have been.

Andrew Balbirnie stroked a career-best century and also became the seventh Ireland batsman to complete 1,000 ODI runs as the 2009 champions defeated traditional rivals and reigning champions Scotland by 25 runs in a crucial Super Six fixture of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday.

In front of broadcast cameras and a crowd of around 1,500, Balbirnie scored 105, his second career century, and Niall O’Brien contributed 70 in his 99th ODI as the two batsmen put on 138 runs for the third wicket before Kevin O’Brien’s 27-ball 46 runs cameo lifted Ireland to 271 for nine after they were sent in to bat.

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer (61, 70b, 7x4, 1x6) played some delightful strokes to provide his side a flying start and his departure at the score of 112 seemed to be a setback, but fighting knocks from Richie Berrington (44), Safyaan Sharif (34), Mark Watt (31) and a 10-ball cameo of 14 by Brad Wheal allowed Scotland to reach 246 in 47.4 overs.

Ireland’s victory means they remain in the hunt for a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. They now have four points with one match against Afghanistan (on 23 March) remaining, while Scotland remain on five points with a match against the Windies (on 21 March) in hand.

Zimbabwe lead the points table with five points and meet the Windies on Monday in a match which will strengthen their chances of qualifying for the World Cup provided they beat the two-time former world champions. In the scenario of the Windies winning the match, the tournament will remain wide open and any two of the five leading sides can qualify for the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament which will be held in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July.

Balbirnie exuded satisfaction after collecting his Player of the Match award.

“I tried to be positive and busy at the start, quite compact, got off the mark as soon as possible and tried to rotate the strike, that’s what I tried to do throughout my innings. It certainly was not a highlights package, I had to get the nitty-gritty stuff and a lot of singles. But I come away with a hundred in a must-win game, that’s very satisfying,” he said.

“It was not that easy a pitch to get in on, so the longer I was there, the easier it was for guys like Niall and Kevin, and they got a run-a-ball or more, so I just thought I could bat as long and get a score and others can come and bat positively and that is what happened.

“As a batting unit we needed to perform after Friday and we did that. We know Afghanistan, they have had an up and down tournament but they are world class players and we will have to be at the top of our game,” he added.

Scotland captain Coetzer felt his side could have chased the target. “It was one of the best wickets in the tournament so far. It was a chase-able score on that surface, but we will take things out of this game and we have to move on,” he said.

Showing confidence ahead of the next game against the Windies, Coetzer said: “We believe we can win that game and we have to, we have to just make sure we turn up the game and play a good game and put the Windies under pressure.”

Sent in to bat, Ireland were in some bother when Paul Stirling departed on the final delivery of the opening over and then William Porterfield failed to capitalise on a dropped catch to drag Brad Wheal’s delivery onto his stumps to leave his side at 45 for two.

However, Balbirnie and Niall O’Brien repaired the damage when they put on 138 runs to equal Ireland’s third wicket record stand by Balbirnie and Ed Joyce against Zimbabwe in Hobart during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The partnership ended when O’Brien was run-out after a run-a-ball 70 with nine fours, while Balbirnie was the fourth batsman out after scoring 105 from 146 balls with 10 fours. Barbirnie’s first 50 runs came off 80 balls and included four fours, while his second 50 came from 60 balls with five fours.

Kevin O’Brien later belted five fours and two sixes in a 27-ball 46, but no other batsman could make any worthwhile contribution as Ireland added 145 runs in the last 20 overs, including 69 in the last 10 overs on a good batting track.

For Scotland, fast bowler Wheal and Safyaan Sharif took three and two wickets conceding 43 and 52 runs, respectively.

Scotland, in their run-chase, made a brisk start when they raced to 94 in the 19th over before losing their second wicket of Calum MacLeod (21) after Matthew Cross (18) had departed at the score of 26.

Boyd Rankin, who was earlier punished by Coetzer for three successive fours and then dropped him when the batsman was on 41, came back strongly for his second spell when he first disturbed the furniture behind Coetzer, then had Gregory Munsey caught smartly by Niall O’Brien and finally caught Craig Wallance off his own bowling as the Scots slumped to 122 for five, which soon became 132 for six.

Richie Berrington and Sharif put up some resistance with their 51-run seventh-wicket partnership and then a late charge by Watt gave Scotland a glimmer of hope before a superb catch by wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien saw the end of Wheal, leaving Watt unbeaten in a total of 246 all out in 47.4 overs.

Ranking finished with four for 63, Tim Murtagh bagged two for 51 and Simi Singh snapped up two for 33.

This was Ireland’s 15th win over Scotland in 21 matches with one no-result.

Scores in brief:

Ireland beat Scotland by 25 runs, Harare Sports Club

Ireland 271-9, 50 overs (Andrew Balbirnie 105, Niall O’Brien 70, Kevin O’Brien 46; Brad Wheal 3-43, Safyaan Sharif 2-52)

The format of this tournament is very confusing.

Zimbabwe v West Indies tomorrow is a massive game and hard to predict. Either team could win. I think after tomorrow it should be easy to predict who will make the WC.

A West Indies win will make it easy to predict since it will be very difficult/unlikely for anyone other than WI and Zim to go through.

A WI loss - however - would put Zim through and throw things wide over for WI, Ire, Scotland and possibly even Afghanistan.

There is a 30% chance or rain tomorrow in Harare.....

A wash out could make things quite tense for everyone (bar UAE).

29th Match, Super Sixes at Harare Sports Club

West Indies

Match scheduled to begin in 49 minutes(09:30 local | 07:30 GMT | 10:30 AST)

After watching the on-going Zim vs WI match - I'm really torn!!

Ofcourse, Scotland are my team in this competition and I would love for Scotland to win the competition all together - and in the process qualify for the 2019 WC.

However, the thought of having a World Cup without West Indies just seems insane. Forgetting all the politics and corruptions which has destroyed WI cricket in recent years - growing up having watched WI, to have a WC without them seems insane.

At the same time - looking at the Zim crowd and the courage with which the home team is playing - how can anyone not support them?!?!

I have to say - the raw passion and emotion which you see at the associate level/this level of cricket is extremely unique and very very appealing. The more I watch this CWCQ competition the angrier I get at the ICC for the ridiculous and stupid decision to have a 10 team World Cup.

Brendon Taylor is in the middle of an absolutely world class knock!!

Playing against top quality limited over bowling - Bishoo, Gayle, Ronchi, Holder - with ease!!

What an innings from Taylor; one of the best ever in ODI & probably among top 2/3 from ZIM. If WI isn’t careful, there is every chance that they’ll miss 2019 WC - unless they win this one or make it really close so that AFG & Irish don’t catch them in NRR after 6 points each. But, at this rate I am not sure if WI will beat SCT or not!!!

I believe, ZCB negotiated with Taylor & Jarvis to come back and indeed WC qualifier was in mind, which paid off big time. A WC participation is worth at least $10mn, and guy so far have played couple of clutch knocks - 2 points won against AFG and today. Even if they lose today, still can make it beating UAE.

Can you please explain the super six concept? What happens if Afg wins their next to matches? Is there no semi final and final?

No semi finals. Top 2 teams qualify for WC and then play the final to decide who gets the CWCQ trophy.

Super 6 format is simple. All matches and points teams earned vs other S6 teams who were in their original group carry over. WI carried over 4 points due to beating Ireland and UAE already and Scotland and Zimbabwe carried over 3 points due to beating Afghanistan and tieing vs each other. Afghanistan lost to Scotland and Zimbabwe hence they carried over zero points.

Afghanistan, like Ireland, are dependent on other results. We need to hope Zimbabwe win today and that the WI defeat Scotland. If that happens it leaves the situation like this (assuming Afghanistan beat the UAE)

Zimbabwe 7 (qualified)
West Indies 6 (no matches left)
Scotland 5 (knocked out)
Ireland 4
Afghanistan 4
UAE 0

The UAE vs Zimbabwe game would be a dead rubber, leaving one game left, Ireland vs Afghanistan. At this stage it comes down to NRR.

Whoever wins vs Ireland and Afghanistan, would need to boost their NRR so its above the WI. If they cant do that then WI remain second and qualify. If they can manage that, the winner of Ireland vs Afghanistan qualifies.

Of course if Wi lose today and again vs Scotland this is all irrelevant, Scotland and Zimbabwe qualify and Ireland vs Afghanistan becomes a dead rubber.

Should WI win today, the only hope left for Ireland and Afghanistan is for Zimbabwe to lose vs UAE or for that to be washed out.

I just hope Zimboks make it through and WI don't, they thrashed us in 2015 by 150 runs or so

This guy Chris Gayle is a burden to the West Indies team. He is there basically to enjoy his vacation before IPL and keep scouting WIN players for PLs & SLs. Absolutely no ownership, no passion and responsibility, just going through the motion. Spanked an useless hundred against UAE - after that a passenger.

Should be keep caked out for good and that will benifit WIN cricket.

Thank you very much for the explanation.

These permutations and combinations are more exciting that the world cup itself.

In latest format, WC will be even more exciting - you’ll see in time. 4 out of 10 is equal to 2 out of 6 and there is no stand alone team at present - it might happen that till last round, mathematically at least 8 teams can make SF or 2 even 3 of standing top 4 might miss the cut after last round.

Only had if they made it 12 teams tournament.....,

125 needed in 97 balls here.

WI will be feeling confident with Hopes and Samuels at the crease - however a wicket or 2 here would really get the Zimbabwe team and crowd back in the game!

Zimbabwe do realise that if WI score a run-a-ball from here, Zim will lose the game right? :afaq

Why are they defending the boundaries with number 7 and 8 at the wicket?

No one is Sure yet (apart from UAE), but WI and ZIM has best chance. WIN need to tie against SCT, even losing by very small margin to SCT can do. ZIM are probably at same level; but they'll need to beat UAE.

SCT has a small task of beating WIN, but they will be deserving qualifier if they can do it. Plot is not at AFG/IRL’s hand but they can expect to with their remaining game before facing each other and expect UAE & SCT wins their last game - then, NRR comes & IRL has an advantage their.

WI still not sure?

Current table:

WI - 6 Points
Zim - 5 Points
Scot - 5 Points
Ire - 4 Points
Afg - 2 Points
UAE - 0 Points

Games left:

Afg vs UAE
Scot vs WI
Zim vs UAE
Ire vs Afg

Here's what the teams need to do to go through:

West Indies

A win against Scotland will seal a top 2 finish and a spot in the 2019 WC for WI.

A loss against Scot will mean that WI will need:

> UAE to beat Zim and/or
> Afg to beat Ire and/or
> Ire to beat Afg by a very small margin

If any of the above 3 happen, WI will qualify for the WC even if they lose to Scotland.

Zimbabwe

A win against UAE will seal a top 2 finish and a spot in the 2019 WC for Zim.

A loss against UAE will mean that Zim will need WI to beat Scot and Afg to beat Ireland to qualify

Scotland

Scotland will need to win against WI and for UAE to beat Zim to qualify (since Zim already have a higher NRR than Scotland).

Ireland

Ireland will need to beat Afg and they will also need WI to beat Scot and they will need UAE to beat Zim to qualify for the 2019 WC

Afghanistan

Afg will need to beat Ireland and UAE, and they will also need WI to beat Scot and they will need UAE to beat Zim to qualify for the 2019 WC

Summary

WI & Zim are firm favourites to qualify for the 2019 World Cup

West Indies 290/6 (49/50 ov)
West Indies won by 4 wickets (with 6 balls remaining)

The fifth highest successful run-chase by the Windies against Zimbabwe in a Super Six match of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 set-up their mouth-watering winner-takes-all match against defending champions Scotland as the battle for the two remaining places in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 hots up.

At the Harare Sports Club on Monday, the Windies chased down a 290-run target for the loss of six wickets with six balls to spare. The result means the winner of the Windies versus Scotland match on Wednesday will become the first side to qualify for the World Cup, while Zimbabwe can become the second side to progress to the event proper if they defeat the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

On the other hand, if Afghanistan defeat the UAE on Tuesday, Scotland defeat the Windies on Wednesday and the UAE upset Zimbabwe on Thursday, then the Windies and either Afghanistan or Ireland will finish on equal points and net run-rate will decide which side joins Scotland for the World Cup, which will be played from 30 May to 14 July.

In another scenario, if the Windies finish on eight points following a victory over Scotland, Afghanistan defeat the UAE and the UAE upsets Zimbabwe, then the Ireland versus Afghanistan match will be a shoot-out for the second qualifier behind the Windies.

Evin Lewis laid the foundation of a successful run-chase with a brisk 75-ball 67 with seven fours and a six, before Shai Hope and Marlon Samuels came to the party by cracking attractive half-centuries. Samuels was caught at the wicket after scoring 86 off 80 balls with six fours and four sixes, while Hope was brilliantly caught by Sikandar Raza after scoring a 97-ball 76 with five fours and a six.

When Samuels and Hope departed in a space of four balls after adding 135 runs for the third wicket, the Windies still required 41 off 32 balls and despite losing Jason Holder and Shimron Hetmyer, the Windies coasted home after Rovman Powell chipped in with 15 and Ashley Nurse scored eight.

Earlier, Brendan Taylor scored a magnificent 138, the first time he reached the magical three-figure mark against the Windies and 10th overall, which boosted the home side to 289 in 50 overs.

Taylor, who had joined Nottinghamshire post the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 but returned to Zimbabwe colours last October, was at his brilliant best as he shred the Windies bowling to pieces. His drives were as elegant and crafty as his cuts, pulls and sweeps, while his reverse sweeps and sliced shots over the wicketkeeper were equally effective and attractive to watch.

With nearly 8,000 chanting and clapping spectators behind him, Taylor reached his half-century from 65 balls with eight fours, while he completed his 10th career century in his 181st match from 105 balls with 16 fours.

Taylor had walked onto the field at the score of 28 for two and was the sixth batsman out at 246. Taylor added 79 runs for the fifth wicket with Sikandar Raza (22) after he had put on 76 for the fourth wicket with Sean Williams (34).

Opener Solomon Mire, who retired on 22 and needed treatment for swelling and blurred vision with mild nerve compression in his right eye after Kemar Roach’s bouncer was stuck between the top of his helmet and grill, returned in the 42nd over at the score of 234 for five to hit a quick-fire 45 with three fours and two sixes as Zimbabwe collected 132 runs in the last 20 overs, including 63 off the last 10 overs.

Captain Jason Holder and Kemar Roach were the bowlers who ensured that Zimbabwe didn’t bat them out of the match by bowling exceptionally well in the last 10 overs. Holder, who also claimed the top two wickets, finished with four for 35 while Roach ended up with figures of three for 55. Keemo Paul bagged two for 55.

Scores in brief

Windies beat Zimbabwe by four wickets, Harare Sports Club

Basically this. How can the ICC expect the mighty Afghan team to qualify if they cant play in their 2nd home!

No justice for a team that will rule cricket come next 50 years with India.

171/5 .. Looks like Afg will stroll to an easy win in the end. Too bad they lost to Scotland. Otherwise Afg would have been favorites to make it to WC. better luck next time

Rashid Khan, the world’s number-one ranked bowler, took a big leap towards becoming the quickest bowler to 100 ODI wickets when he took his fourth five-wicket haul as Afghanistan overcame a top-order batting collapse to prevail over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a Super Six fixture of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 at the Old Hararians on Tuesday.

Rashid returned figures of 9-0-41-5 as the UAE, after electing to bat first, were bowled out for 177 in 43 overs. Afghanistan, in their run-chase, plunged to 54 for five before an unfinished 124-run sixth wicket partnership between player of the match Gulbadin Naib and Najibullah Zadran helped them reach the target for the loss of five wickets.

The victory in the 35th over also helped Afghanistan to narrow the gap with Ireland and the Windies on net run-rate, which will come into play if Scotland beat the Windies on Wednesday, the UAE beat Zimbabwe on Thursday and Afghanistan beat Ireland on Friday.

The winner of Wednesday’s match between the Windies and Scotland will qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2019 and if Zimbabwe beat UAE on Thursday, then they will claim the second qualifying spot.

Rashid handed over the captaincy to a returning Asghar Stanikzai and immediately produced his best bowling performance of the tournament when he finished with five for 41. This lifted him to 96 wickets from 42 ODIs and the 19-year-old now has Mitchell Starc firmly within his sights. The Australia left-arm fast bowler had reached the 100-wicket milestone in 52 ODIs.

Rashid, who is now the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 15, received good support from fast bowler Dawlat Zadran, who finished with three for 45 as only Shaiman Anwar (64, 87b, 4x4, 1x6) and Mohammad Naveed (45, 20b, 7x4, 2x6) batted with any confidence and authority for the UAE.

In turn, opener Gulbadin Naib and Najibullah Zadran saved Afghanistan’s blushes with good half-centuries after their side was in deep trouble at 54 for five. Gulbadin Naib returned unbeaten on 74 from 97 balls with four fours and two sixes, while Najibullah Zadran’s 64-ball 63 included five fours and two sixes.

This was the sixth encounter between the two sides and both are tied on three wins apiece.

Scores in brief

Afghanistan beat UAE by five wickets, Old Hararians

UAE 177 all out, 43 overs (Shaiman Anwar 64, Mohammad Naveed 45, Chirag Suri 22; Rashid Khan 5-41, Dawlat Zadran 3-45)

Afghanistan 178-5, 34.3 overs (Gulbadin Naib 74 not out, Najibullah Zadran 63 not out; Mohammad Naveed 2-37, Qadeer Ahmed 2-38)

If the scots win they qualify, and afg are virtually out due to bad nrr. An Ireland win and a Zimbabwe loss would send Ireland through ahead of WI on NRR. Exciting times :19:

Afghanistan will have a better NRR. If Scotland wins, Scotland goes through and which will derail WI NRR more. And if Afganistan wins their last game comfortably against Ireland then both Ireland and WI will have lesser NRR than Afgan. However to go through Afganistan must pray for rain in UAE vs ZIM game or pray for UAE win. Thats the only chance they have to qualify.

If WI loses today, they are almost certainly out.

SCT are in with 7 points
ZIM in with 7 points if they beat UAE

If ZIM loses to UAE, then they are out. It’s then between WI & winner of IRL-AFG by NRR.

At present WIN has a NRR of around +0.53, even a narrow loss means, it’ll come down to +0.50 level. IRL at present at +0.47 and AFG at +0.34.

For a WIN loss even on last ball today means IRL will need to win roughly by 10-15 runs (or inside 47/48 overs); for AFG, it’s probably around 50-55 runs (or inside 40/41 overs).

This guy Chris Gayle is a shame, must be enjoying his safari.

OK!
Scotland need 199 to seal a World Cup berth

This is very serious for West Indies, if they lose this and Zimbabwe beats UAE (which is very likely) it will be Zimbabwe and Scotland who qualify.

:stokes

Scotland can knock WI out here if they bat sensibly.

I hope WI can manage to qualify but also feel bad for teams like Scotland who have played so well. Would 2 more teams in the World Cup have diluted the quality of the tournament that much?

Absolute disgusting player with larger than life attitude - if WIN fails to advance, this guy will be the first criminal.

Yes he should be dropped. Lewis can play his role and I'm sure West Indies can find an opener who can can strike at 90 plus and average 30.

91 of 17, with 5 down; don't think SCT is making it. WIN needs a tie actually.
