Cook and Kohli named captains respectively

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced its Test and ODI Teams of the Year. Former Test stalwarts Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten and Kumar Sangakkara selected the sides based on players’ performances in the period from 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016.

England’s Alastair Cook has been named as captain of the ICC Test Team of the Year, which includes four Englishmen, three Australians, and a player each from New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

This is the third time Cook has been appointed captain of the Test side, while it the eighth time in nine years that Dale Steyn has been selected. Joe Root, David Warner and Kane Williamson have been chosen for the third successive year.

ICC Test Team of the Year 2016 (in batting order) is:
1. David Warner (Australia)
2. Alastair Cook (England) (captain)
3. Kane Williamson (New Zealand)
4. Joe Root (England)
5. Adam Voges (Australia)
6. Jonny Bairstow (England) (wicketkeeper)
7. Ben Stokes (England)
8. R. Ashwin (India)
9. Rangana Herath (Sri Lanka)
10. Mitchell Starc (Australia)
11. Dale Steyn (South Africa)
12. Steve Smith (Australia)

It has been a case of third time lucky for Virat Kohli who has been named as captain of the ICC ODI Team of the Year, which includes three Australians, Indians, South Africans each, and one each from England and West Indies. De Villiers has been selected for the sixth time since 2010, while Starc has been picked up for the third time in four years.

Starc and his team-mate Warner are the only two players to have been selected in both the Test and ODI sides in 2016.

ICC ODI Team of the Year 2016 (in batting order) is:
1. David Warner (Australia)
2. Quinton de Kock (South Africa) (wicketkeeper)
3. Rohit Sharma (India)
4. Virat Kohli (India) (captain)
5. AB de Villiers (South Africa)
6. Jos Buttler (England)
7. Mitchell Marsh (Australia)
8. Ravindra Jadeja (India)
9. Mitchell Starc (Australia)
10. Kagiso Rabada (South Africa)
11. Sunil Narine (West Indies)
12. Imran Tahir (South Africa)

Does ICC do anything right at all?

Selecting an opener as no.3

Selecting a captain who hasn't captained in the format

Selecting an A/R who has played 4-5 games and wasn't even a first choice for the team throughout the cut off period (Jadeja)

Yeah. Makes no sense. They should have made their mind over Warner or Sharma as an opener. de Villiers should have been captain. And Jadeja's selection is absolutely mind-boggling since he played a total of 5 ODIs in 2016 and during this period, in which he picked up 3 wickets in total, with a best of 2/49. How does that land him in the best team of the year?

And though Ashwin has been superb in Tests, he has played even fewer ODIs than Jadeja during this period -- a total of 3 -- in which he picked up a total of 3 wickets.

Decent line-up besides the bizarre inclusion of Jadeja. Hales deserved to be picked, though.

Poor Adam Zampa took 22 wickets at 23 each yet he didn't find a place. :))

Joe Root, Alex Hales and Jason Roy are at 1, 2 and 4 in terms of leading run scorers of the period with former 2 having 55+ average and all having 90+ SR. Yet we see none in the team. What on Earth? :))

Alistair cook captain.. lol What a time to announce that. They played more matches. scored more runs. Other teams didn't have that benefit.

I honestly think they made up the squads in 10 mins each

A better team as per me:

1) Alex Hales
2) Q D Kock (WK)
3) Virat Kohli
4) Joe Root
5) Steve Smith (C)
6) Mitchel Marsh
7) C R Woakes
8) Matt Henry
9) Mitchel Starc
10) K Rabada
11) Imran Tahir

ENG are such a dynamic ODI team .. Feeling terrified of what could happen if we dish up flat tracks for the ODI series in Jan. :ashwin

Kohli & Rohit alone wont pull us through this series....

Isn't Rohit injured for the series?

Isn't Rohit injured for the series?

Yes he is !. So that leaves just Kohli as a guaranteed performer. KL Rahul could play I guess. Dhawan wont play . Still injured . Turner or no-turner Eng are gonna smash it everywhere . Wont be like the Nz-IND ODI series.

I do feel that a major thrashing (possible if the pitches are super-flat) will lead to some wholesale changes in the squad. The MSD captiancy 'process' has gone for a bit too long .

The "Indian Batting Forumla" which was our BACKBONE since 2010's has been surpassed by the more dynamic playing style of sides like ENG. This was made pretty apparent in the 2016 T20WC. We progressed pretty much on Kohli's heroics in the batting aspect.

We no longer have the same personnel to execute the tried and tested formula. It needs some serious tweaking . We don't have a Sehwag or a Yuvraj anymore. MSD is not what he was & Raina is in decline.

To make up a good team for the next WC in Eng , which Dhoni MUST NOT CAPTIAN , we need to try giving reigns to Kohli soon.

LOL. Voges over Smith and Kohli. Warner over Azhar. Herath over Yasir. Narine over Tahir and Zampa. This is a joke. :amla

Well Voges got dropped from his own team so not sure how he makes it into the World 11. I was talking about 2016 stats only. Not Sep 15- Sep 16. They need to rename these awards if they're gonna take stats from those periods. Also for Warner vs Azhar, I was talking about Test matches. Lol. Herath bowled against Zimbabwe and on square turners vs Aus. Obviously he will have better stats than Yasir who bowled on green mambas in Eng/NZ and roads in UAE.

Apart from what HitWicket mentioned, Tahir is there.
