Rishabh Pant has attained new highs for an India wicket-keeper batsman in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after his superb century in the drawn final Test in Sydney.

• The former ICC U19 Cricket World Cup star attains joint-highest ranking among batsmen by a wicketkeeper from India and highest rating points by a gloveman from his country

• Pujara, Harris, Markram and Asad among other batsmen to move up; Yadav, Lyon, Olivier and Shaheen also advance

The 21-year-old left-hander has gained 21 slots and reached 17th place, the joint-highest by a specialist India wicketkeeper along with Farokh Engineer, who did so in January 1973. Further, Pant’s aggregate of 673 rating points are the highest by an India wicketkeeper, with Dhoni having the next highest aggregate of 662 points and Engineer 619 points. Dhoni’s highest Test ranking was 19th.

Pant, a star at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2016 when he scored an 18-ball half-century against Nepal, has moved into the top-20 after only his ninth Test match with an unbeaten 159. Pant had started the Australia tour in 59th place and made rapid progress, scoring 350 runs in a series that also saw him take 20 catches.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 521 runs to help beat Australia 2-1 and claim the Player of the Series award, is another batsman to gain in the latest rankings update, which also takes into account performances in the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan in Cape Town.

Pujara has gained one slot to reach third position while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (up six places to 57th) and rookie opener Mayank Agarwal (up five places to 62nd) are the others from his team to advance at the end of a historic series win.

Spinner Kuldeep Yadav has gained seven slots to reach a career-best 45th position after his figures of 5 for 99 in Australia’s first innings even as Jasprit Bumrah has held on to 16th position and Mohammed Shami has gained one place to take the 22nd slot. Jadeja has gained one place to reach fifth among bowlers and has also leapfrogged Windies captain Jason Holder into second place among all-rounders.

For Australia, opener Marcus Harris has advanced 21 places to take a career-best 69th position after a fine 79 in the first innings while off-spinner Nathan Lyon has inched up from 14th to 13th position.

South Africa’s Aiden Markram has moved back into the top 10 after his knock of 78 at Cape Town, gaining seven slots to reach 10th position. Temba Bavuma has moved into the top 30 for the first time (up five places to 26th) after his score of 75 while captain Faf du Plessis’s first-innings century has lifted him six places to 16th position.

Among their bowlers, Vernon Philander has gained one slot to reach third position while Duanne Olivier has continued his surge to move up to 32nd place from 36th.

For Pakistan, Asad Shafiq has benefitted by five places to reach 24th position after scores of 20 and 88 while Babar Azam is only one slot behind after gaining two places. Shan Masood has moved up 22 places to a career-best 65th while captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has moved up from 42nd to 37th place.

Among their bowlers, Shaheen Afridi has gained 13 slots to reach 60th place after taking four wickets in the match, which Pakistan lost by nine wickets to concede a decisive 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

There has been no change in position or points for India in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings, while Australia have lost one point but remain in fifth position.

Why are the Indian pacers ranked so low?

Interesting that Shakib al Hasan as an all rounder is ranked higher than all of them except Bumrah, but according to brother Canford Cliffs he would be struggling to compete with Axar Patel and and some guy named Washington in IND B squad lol.

Kudos to Pant for already becoming the highest rated Indian wicket keeper batsman ever in tests. Thats some achievement for a 21 year old lad barely in his 1st year of international cricket. :14:

Wish list :-

Babar 'The Bobby' Azam to be among top 3 test batsmen by 2020 end.

All believers to give me an Amen for that.

Think we have argued this before. Rankings are one thing but we also need to access impact of the player. Do you really think Jadeja/Holder are better test all rounders than Ben stokes as per the rankings? So we need to take these with pinch of salt. Shakib is not even top 5 all rounder in the world in any format.

Holder is one of the most underrated allrounder .you should check his 2018 stats before disrespecting him

Yeah I think Jadeja is a better test all rounder than Stokes, and I dont know much about Holder.

I am just puzzled as to why Indian pacers were ranked so low when in reality they seemed better.

Whom do you think are top 5 test all rounders then?

The Indian pacers have just had one phenomenal year yet. They will rise up the rankings within another year (they aren't playing many tests soon because of the WC).

Whom do you think are top 5 test all rounders then?
They just haven't played test yet. Once they start to play they will shoot through the list all the way to top 5.

Axer Patel
Washington Sundar
Krunal Pandya
Hanuma Vihari
Krishnappa Gowtham
Shreyas Gopal
Varun Chakravarthy (Watch out now)
Shivam Dube
Gurkeerat Singh
Pawan Negi

You wanted 5, I gave you 10. :)

And such is where we belong.

Alas, years of watching Pakistan batting and having wonderful batsmen, from Haneef, to Zaheer, to Miandat, to Saeed, to Inzi/MoYo to YK and here we are, desolate.

We are at the bottom of the barrel and have little really going for us. It seemed that the batting seemlessly left off from the last Pakistani great to the next, because they watched and learned from their predecessors and used what they learned to be the backbone moving forward.

Of course, bowling has taken a hit as well, but we always still seem to find test bowlers who do the job well. Abbas has been a great find, as has Afridi, and though this series has been poor (was not a spinning wicket) Shah has been world class overall.

YK and Misbah leave and you think that Azhar and Asad will come in and fill in that role. Shafiq might be the best 6 batsmen in the world, and Azhar had some fantastic innings, 302* is no small feat. But alas, move them up the order, put them pressure on them, and the fold like a cheep stack of cards.

Shafiq I am less surprised with, as he always seemed to put on runs in as low a pressure situation as possible so as to keep his spot on the team, but Azhar, well, that one has been one of the biggest disappointments I can remember. There is no mental fortitude at all. Simply nothing going between the wickets. Azhar lacking in true talent, made up for it with grit, Asad for all the pretty shots, always looks like his innings are over before it even starts.

I do like Babar, but there is just something missing with him. He doesn't seem like he will be anything more than a decent batsmen, obviously test is the focus here but holistically he just seems to play for himself. You would think in tests this would be more of an area where it would bode better, but even still, something is lacking. I hope I am wrong with him, I mean, to be fair to him he is only 24 and two fifties is encouraging in SA, but fifties don't cut it for me. A century is required to really show you're a big time player. He has 1 in 38 innings (let's call it 2 for the 99 against the Aussies to give him some credit). A 58 average last year is promising but 1/2 centuries in his career is still not that impressive. Obviously he has a long career left given how dry the batting talent is, so he will have plenty of time to show in the next ten years if he is a big time player, but I won't hold my breath.

Thus leaves the big fish, our captain. Let's leave batting out of the conversation (a high 20s/low thirties average since 2016), let's just discuss a captain whose job is only to be captain. Left right and centre it was a question mark as to why the field is to constrict runs and not get wickets, and then of course the decision to go with Shah when it is a very poor pitch for spinners to succeed. The blame can go on management, but you can obviously bet that your captain had a big say.

Okay, let's give him some leeway, rarely do teams ever win on the road in test cricket, but then our home ground, yes, Dubai is our home ground because that is where we have played cricket for the last almost 20 years, we keep getting embarrassed and that too by teams below us in the standings. One win against England shouldn't erase the memory of the loss to Sri Lanka and that win too having to do again, with excellent bowling, which is far too often the saving grace.

Batting for Pakistan in tests in almost done and dusted. The organization must be appalled that they put so much time and effort into certain players and gave them so much backing and yet they are now looking like tailenders out there. It's not all on PCB, to be fair, you have to invest and tell players you trust in them and that they just go out and play ask not be worried about their spot on the squad, but the players need to put some responsibility on themselves.

Though this is test focused, this extends to
ODI's too. The CT was a flash in the pan. Our players in all facets when it comes to the bat especially and to a lesser degree with the ball either get figured out, don't adjust, or have so much hubris that they refuse to change and go into that rockstar mentality.

It's been a year and a half, you can't live off of false glory forever. For some reasons our players can't be humble, keep their head down, and focus on being the best, it's far too often that they make some money, get a couple wickets, and hit some boundaries and get caught up in the lifestyle, versus remembering their humble beginnings.

They just haven't played test yet. Once they start to play they will shoot through the list all the way to top 5.

Varun Chakravarthy (Watch out now)

Pawan Negi

You wanted 5, I gave you 10. :)

Vihari is a part time bowler. :)

Isn't Pawan Negi the guy who strugles to get a game for his state side but goes to Dhaka Premier league and hits double centuries for fun?
