Saturday Night Showdown - Mumbai is all decked up and ready as the reigning champions, India, kickstart their title defence against the USA at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. For several Indian origin players in the USA squad, this will be nothing short of a dream come true in the 'City of Dreams'. Growing up, many of them would have imagined playing an international game at Wankhede. While they now wear different colours, the emotion of walking out at this venue will be just as special. India eye history - India are undoubtedly heavy favourites to defend their title. No team has ever successfully defended the trophy, no host nation has lifted the title at home, and no side has won the tournament three times. As they begin their campaign, Suryakumar Yadav's side has the chance to break all three barriers and script a historic chapter of their own. Since the previous edition of the World Cup in 2024 in the USA and West Indies, the Men in Blue have not lost a single bilateral series, and they also emerged victorious in the Asia Cup. Be it batting depth or the sheer variety in their bowling options, India appear to have all bases covered. Even at the top of the order, where there were earlier concerns, things seem settled now. Sanju Samson's form was under scrutiny, but Ishan Kishan, with an explosive return to the T20I setup, has sealed a spot for himself. The return of Tilak Varma is another boost. Having recovered from his abdominal issue, he featured in warm-up games for India and India A, and will slot in at number three. They do bat deep as deep as number 8, which we saw in their last T20I against New Zealand. That combination is likely to continue, with Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav among the specialist spin options. In a blow to their fast bowling resources, Harshit Rana was ruled out after sustaining a knee injury during the warm-up match against South Africa in Navi Mumbai, with Mohammed Siraj drafted into the squad as his replacement. Rana also added depth with the bat, and while Siraj brings experience, India will miss the all-round balance Rana provided.

Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah remain the usual suspects leading the pace attack, with Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube also contributing. Captain Suryakumar Yadav has plenty of part-time bowling options at his disposal as well, with Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma capable of rolling their arm over. USA bring belief - Monank Patel and his men arrive with confidence. In their maiden T20 World Cup in 2024, they proved they are no pushovers by stunning Pakistan in the group stage and qualifying for the Super 8 stage. They last played a competitive T20I in April 2025, but many of their players have stayed in rhythm through franchise leagues. Their narrow loss to New Zealand in a warm-up game will also boost belief, as they lost by just 7 runs while chasing 209. Runs from Saiteja Mukkamalla, Milind Kumar, Shubham Ranjane, and captain Monank Patel were encouraging signs. However, the absence of Aaron Jones, who has been suspended by the ICC over corruption charges, leaves a significant void in the middle order. Andries Gous brings valuable experience after featuring in the ILT20, while Shayan Jahangir is another key batter. However, with the top order looking settled and the middle order already featuring the likes of Sanjay Krishnamurthi and Shubham Ranjane, Jahangir could find himself missing out

India Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Axar Patel (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakravarthy.

USA squad: Captain Monank Patel, includes Jessy Singh, Andries Gous, Shehan Jayasuriya, Milind Kumar, Shayan Jahangir, Saiteja Mukkamala, Sanjay Krishnamurthi, Harmeet Singh, Nosthush Kenjige, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Saurabh Netravalkar, Ali Khan, Mohammad Mohsin, and Shubham Ranjane.

Rana out of WC is a blow [ Siraj replacing him ] .
Should be a high scoring game at Wankhede , wonder if IND can restrict USA to under 150 .

Not in T20s, Rana has better variations and can score useful runs. But now Arshdeep will play most of the matches alongside Bumrah. :kp
Arshdeep is the best option after bumrah

I know Rana might have variations but for tournaments clutch guys like siraj are always better

USA team is effectively India B team. Almost all players are Indians. :inti

I hope USA will spoil the party for India by upsetting them. It is unlikely but I can always hope. :dav

USA my second team after Pakistan 🇺🇸

it’s a unique indo-Pak-sa-carribean team

I believe USA have lot of potential to be a decent team in future given the number of indo Pak expats here

India to win.. I don't see any chance of upset... Zero, nada, shoonay chance of USA winning this one.

Will be a homecoming for many players from both teams.

Shubham Ranjane, Netravalkar, Monank Patel, Hermeet Singh are all from Mumbai and started playing their cricket there. Monank and Rohit Sharma went to the same school. Ranjane was SKY's room-mate. I think half the players on the field might be from Mumbai.

It's a very weird US team that's been chosen, as a minimum expected a few of Pakistani and Caribbean lads being chosen, representing the demographics along with a token Anglo Saxon face.

If US crickets anything like UK scene then there should be Pakistani and Carribbean descent lads playing at the top level.

They have a few Pakistanis - Shayan Jahangir, Mohammad Mohsin and Ali Khan. I suppose Aaron Jones was the designated Caribbean lad before he got busted for match-fixing. Shehan Jayasuria is there, who has represented Sri Lanka at the international level. But yes, predominantly this side has a very Indian flavor.

Why are the two lads you mentioned not been selected? Local politics with the official US cricketing body disbanded/ struck off?
Honestly a very eye brow raising team

No they are regular fixtures in the side, and all of them are in the squad. Ali Khan for years was their premier fast-bowler and probably still is along with Netravalkar. Shayan Jahangir is in the squad and probably just outside their first choice group of batters. Besides these two, Mohammad Mohsin is another Pakistani. He's a leg-spinner who was representing Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL until very recently and he has a high chance of playing today. Despite being a predominantly Indian/Indian-origin team from what I understand there is good camaraderie between the lads and not any politics that I've heard of.

Once upon a time world cups use to start with heavyweights Aus v Sa etc.. now it’s Italy v Uganda these days.

Even during Stuart law incident, it was mentioned there was a good camaraderie between both sets.Bolwers from ind and pak were helping each other .it somehow triggered law and he said something awful.

It's good to be back here after a little while! Haven't logged in for a while and it's good to be back seeing USA at the world cup! Am excited to see my team here..fun times.. sorry Ind team supporters, am supporting USA and hoping they create one of the biggest upsets in T20 world cup history! Very difficult but thats the stuff of dreams right! Will be expecting your full support when we take on Pak as beating Pak is more realistic and if Pak abandons the game against Ind then USA if they beat pak have a very good chance to go ti the next stage.

USA though is mainly dependent on 3 players - saiteja jahangir and netravalkar. Our captain Monank though gives klrahul vibes lol , chokes in crunch situations and is an anchor lol ! Let's go team USA ! 👍

USA's batting is very good. Andries gous is the best batsman in the team and others are decent too as well.
Pakistan will have tough time against them.

ICC tv showing the match with Hindi commentary, commies saying that the wicket was due to bad luck and not the bowlers plan. Abhishek was brave hitting it to that area despite knowing that the fielder was there they just got a buri nazar. Gonna mute the commentary now....

Ali Khan on fire! What an over.. not easy to keep Ind batting quiet. First 6 power play very crucial as Ind can bat you outta the game. Need 1 or 2 more wickets.

And clearly you guys haven't seen the cinematic tour de force, the veritable auteur's masterpiece that was 1998's Gunda

Shubham- what have you done!! Cant drop kishan. Hope it doesn't hurr tge US too much.. what a miss damn..

Being around Indians in the team has helped Ali Khan develop his bowling IQ.

Used to be a Temu version of Rauf :inti
