ICC Teams and Player Rankings watch for 2023

Babar Azam's reign as the No.1 ODI batter in the world is over, with India young gun Shubman Gill claiming top spot from the Pakistan captain on the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men's Batting Rankings.
Gill rises to the top to displace Babar on the back of his solid start to India's campaign at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and in the process becomes just the fourth player from his country behind Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to hold the No.1 ODI batter ranking.

The right-hander has contributed scores of 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa over the last week, and amassed a total of 219 runs from six innings at the tournament.

Babar has totalled 282 runs from eight knocks at the World Cup and drops six rating points below Gill into second place as his reign of more than two years as the No.1 ranked ODI batter in the world comes to an end.

The rise of Gill to the top and the big jump of former captain Kohli to fourth on the latest ODI batter rankings comes on a massive day for India, who also had fast bowler Mohammed Siraj climb to the top of the list for ODI bowlers on the back of his 10 wickets at the World Cup.

There is a major shake-up inside the top 10 of both batting and bowling ODI lists due to good performances at the World Cup and it comes as no surprise that it is India's bevy of stars that have made the biggest impression.

Gill rises to the top for the first time in his short but impressive career, while Kohli jumps three places to fourth - and within one rating point of third-placed South African Quinton de Kock - courtesy of his 543 runs at the World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer also jumps an impressive 17 places to 18th overall on the list for ODI batters, with Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman (up three spots to 11th) and Afghanistan counterpart Ibrahim Zadran (up six spots to 12th) making good ground.

The top of the ODI bowler rankings appears completely different to what it looked like at the start of the World Cup, with four players from India inside the top 10 on the back of their sensational unbeaten start to the 50-over showcase event.

Siraj improves two spots to regain his crown as the No.1 ranked ODI bowler, while teammates Kuldeep Yadav (up three places to fourth), Jasprit Bumrah (up three spots to eighth) and Mohammed Shami (up seven places to 10th) are all nestled within the top 10.

South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj (up two spots to second) and Australia counterpart Adam Zampa (up six places to third) are other big movers inside the top 10, while last week's No.1 ranked ODI bowler Shaheen Afridi drops four places to equal fifth alongside fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood.

The leading wicket-taker at the World Cup - Sri Lanka pacer Dilshan Madushanka - jumps 31 places to 45th on the list for ODI bowlers, while India spinner Ravindra Jadeja (up eight places to 19th) and South Africa left-armer Marco Jansen (up nine spots to equal 24th) are other big movers.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan remains the No.1 ranked all-rounder despite an early exit at the World Cup due to injury, with Australia veteran Glenn Maxwell improving two spots to sixth after his match-winning heroics against Afghanistan in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Babar Azam with 0 impact is no. 1. No wonder these ranking is useless. Even Ibrahim Zardan or Maxwell are far superior than him

Big blow to his "brand builders". That ranking was useful only for them. Even when he was not doing well they kept hyping no.1 ranking.

A new World No.1 bowler has been crowned on the eve of the World Cup 2023 semi-finals in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Bowlers Rankings.

The musical chairs for the No.1 bowler spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Payer Rankings continue with a new No.1 crowned for the third time in as many weeks.

The competitiveness of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 has made it difficult for bowlers to hold on to their top spot. On 1 November, Shaheen Afridi claimed the top spot in the rankings but his reign lasted all of one week after Mohammed Siraj toppled him on 8 November.

Less than a week later, a new No.1 emerged with South Africa's Keshav Maharaj climbing the charts to the summit, with the Proteas spinner rising from No.2 while Siraj moved down a spot from the top.

Since the last update last Wednesday, Maharaj picked up seven wickets in three matches, which included a four-for against New Zealand in Pune. He was one of the very few bowlers who troubled India, returning figures of 1/30 when the hosts scored 326. In the final group stage game, the left-arm spinner scalped two wickets against Afghanistan.

Siraj, who scalped six wickets in India's last three matches, isn't too far behind Maharaj with only three rating points separating the two. His compatriots Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav occupy two of the three remaining spots in the Top 5.

In the last week of the group stage action, Glenn Maxwell produced one of the greatest ODI innings of all time. His 201* off 128 balls while chasing against Afghanistan came against all odds when Australia were struggling at 91/7 while chasing 293.

During the innings, Maxwell battled cramps and spasms of his own but remained unbeaten and pulled off one of the greatest heists in World Cup history.

His stupendous innings has helped him climb a whopping 17 spots in the batting charts and one spot on the all-rounders' rankings.

Mitchell Marsh was among other significant gainers as he racked up 177* in Australia's last league stage game against Bangladesh. He too recorded a massive rise in the batting rankings to No.38 (up 11 places).

Shubman Gill continues to lead the way in the batting rankings after dethroning Babar Azam last week. India's batting lynchpins Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma occupy 4th and 5th spots respectively, with the India skipper rising one spot in the latest update.

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul too have made ground after brilliant performances that were capped off with centuries apiece against Netherlands in the final league stage game. Iyer climbed five spots to equal No.13 along with Fakhar Zaman while KL Rahul jumped to 17th from 24th.

The World Cup now heads into the knockout stages and the rankings could see even more changes come next week with seven of the top 10 in batters and bowlers rankings featuring in the semi-finals.

India are set to face New Zealand at the Wankhede on Wednesday while South Africa take on Australia at the Eden Gardens the day after. The grand finale will take place on 19 November at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Kohli closes in: Top ODI ranking within sight for India star

Virat Kohli's push to regain the mantle as the No.1 ranked ODI player in the world has gained further momentum after the India star made good ground on the latest update to the MRF Tyres ODI Player Rankings.
Kohli scored a tournament best 765 runs during the recent ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and that helped the in-form right-hander jump one place to third on the latest rankings and within just 35 rating points of teammate Shubman Gill.

Gill (826 rating points) holds on to a narrow lead at the top of the batter rankings and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (824) remains second, but Kohli (791) and India skipper Rohit Sharma (up one spot to fourth with 769 rating points) are now within striking distance after some strong performances during the World Cup.

Kohli reached triple figures on three occasions at the World Cup to break the record of former teammate Sachin Tendulkar for most ODI centuries, while Rohit smashed 597 runs as the India duo finished the tournament as the two leading run scorers.

With Gill managing a reasonable output of 354 runs during the event and Babar just 320 runs as Pakistan failed to reach the knockout stages of the tournament, it paved the way for Kohli and Rohit to make their run on the top ranking.

Kohli famously held the No.1 ranking for a total of 1258 consecutive days during a reign of almost four years between 2017 and 2021, with Babar spending the majority of time in the premier position in recent years until Gill claimed top billing during the World Cup.

The rise of the India duo means South Africa opener Quinton de Kock drops two spots to fifth on the ODI batter rankings, with New Zealand right-hander Daryl Mitchell rising five spots to sixth on the back of his 552 runs at the World Cup.

The biggest eye-catcher on the updated ODI batter rankings is Travis Head, with the Australia opener jumping a massive 28 places to 15th overall after his brilliant century and Player of the Match performance in the World Cup final.

South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj remains on top on the updated ODI bowler rankings, with a host of Australia players making some good ground after their successful World Cup campaign.

Experienced seamer Josh Hazlewood rises four places to second overall, fellow quick Mitchell Starc jumps eight spots to 12th, while skipper Pat Cummins improves seven rungs to 27th.

India pair Mohammed Siraj (third) and Jasprit Bumrah (fourth) remain firmly nestled within the top 10 for ODI bowlers, while teammate Kuldeep Yadav drops one spot to equal sixth.

There isn't much change inside the top 10 of the ODI rankings for all-rounders at the completion of the World Cup, with Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan maintaining a healthy lead at the head of proceedings.

New Zealand's Mitchell Santner drops two spots to seventh and Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan Miraz rises two places to ninth.

This ICC ODI World Cup 2023 has proved rankings don't matter. What have Babar and Shubman Gill achieved in this World Cup? What have Shaheen and Siraj done in this World Cup? So, certainly, as David Warner said, it is a matter of who does well when it matters.

SKY leaves rivals in his wake with further T20I rankings push

India dynamo Suryakumar Yadav has been rewarded for his quickfire half-century in the second match of his side's T20I series against South Africa by further extending his lead at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Batter Rankings.

Suryakumar smashed 56 from just 36 deliveries as India fell short in the exciting clash in Gqeberha and the attacking right-hander gained a total of 10 rating points as a result to further increase his lead as the No.1 ranked batter in the shortest format of the game.

The India star now has a total of 865 rating points, which is well clear of his nearest rivals in Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan (787 rating points) and South Africa's Aiden Markram (758) less than six months out from the start of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar famously claimed the premier ranking during the most recent edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia towards the end of last year and on current form it appears the India batter is likely to hold that position into next year's tournament in the West Indies and USA.

South Africa opener Reeza Hendricks is one player to make ground on Suryakumar after he moved up one place to eighth following his innings of 49 against India, while Tilak Varma (up 10 spots to 55th) and Rinku Singh (up 46 places to equal 59th) also catch the eye alongside their more seasoned teammate.

With newly-crowned No.1 T20I bowler Ravi Bishnoi missing selection on the tour of South Africa so far it has paved the way for Afghanistan ace Rashid Khan to join the India young gun at the top of the rankings for T20I bowlers, with Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi also making some eye-catching ground in rising two places to 10th following an economical spell of 1/18 in their most recent contest.

India left-armer Kuldeep Yadav rises five places to 32nd on the same list, while Markram improves two places to second behind only India's Ravindra Jadeja on the latest T20I rankings for all-rounders.

There was also some movement on the latest Test rankings this week following the completion of the exciting series between Bangladesh and New Zealand that finished tied at 1-1 after a tight second Test in Mirpur.

Glenn Phillips was adjudged Player of the Match in that Test and the 27-year-old was rewarded by climbing from outside the top 100 to 55th on the updated rankings for batters and improved 42 places to 24th on the list for all-rounders.

Teammate Ajaz Patel jumped seven places to 33rd on the list for Test bowlers, while Bangladesh duo Mehidy Hasan (up two spots to 21st) and Nayeem Hasan (up five places to 44th) also made good ground behind top-ranked bowler Ravichandran Ashwin.

New No.1 ranked T20I bowler crowned, Babar takes top spot from Gill

A spinner from England has become the newest player to hold top spot for T20I bowlers, while Pakistan's Babar Azam has re-claimed the No.1 position for ODI batters from India's Shubman Gill following a major shake-up on the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men's Player Rankings.

Adil Rashid has been rewarded for his good consistent form in the Caribbean as he moves up two places and takes the top spot from Afghanistan's Rashid Khan (second) and India's Ravi Bishnoi (third) on the T20I rankings for bowlers as a host of England and West Indies players make their move less than six months out from the start of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Rashid becomes just the second player from England to hold the No.1 ranking for T20I bowlers after off-spinner Graeme Swann held the top spot back more than a decade ago.

It means three different players have held the premier position on the list for T20I bowlers over the last three weeks, with West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein (up three spots to sixth) and South Africa counterpart Tabraiz Shamsi (up three places to ninth) also making eye-catching moves inside the top 10 on a busy day for the rankings.

West Indies quartet Brandon King (up six places to sixth), Nicholas Pooran (up two spots to 12th), Rovman Powell (Up 14 places to 23rd) and Kyle Mayers (up nine spots to 33rd) made some ground on top-ranked T20I India batter Suryakumar Yadav, while Phil Salt jumps to 20th following his superb run for England in the Caribbean.

Suryakumar's lead at the top is now out to a total of 100 rating points after his quickfire century in the final game of India's series against South Africa, with Pakistan veteran Mohammad Rizwan (second) and South Africa dasher Aiden Markram (third) his closest rivals.

Markram moves up one place to third behind Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan on the latest T20I rankings for all-rounders, with England spinner Moeen Ali (up two spots to equal eighth) and West Indies seamer Jason Holder (up one rung to 24th) also making the ground.

Things are even tighter in 50-over cricket, with Babar re-claiming his place as the No.1 ranked ODI batter in the world from Gill after the India opener was rested for the ongoing series against South Africa.

Ireland's Harry Tector moves up one place on the ODI batter rankings to seventh on the back of his 33 against Zimbabwe, while South Africa duo Rassie van der Dussen (down one spot to eighth) and Heinrich Klaasen (drops one rung to 10th) lose some ground inside the top 10 following small scores in the opening match of their series with India.

There is also some change within the latest Test rankings following Australia's emphatic victory over Pakistan in Perth, with a host of players from the reigning ICC World Test Championship side making some eye-catching progress.

Opener Usman Khawaja (up three places to fourth) moves in front of Babar and within striking distance of top-ranked Kiwi Kane Williamson on the updated rankings for Test batters, while teammates David Warner (up nine spots to 27th) and Mitchell Marsh (improves 12 places to equal 68th) also make some ground after good knocks against Pakistan.

It's a similar story on the bowler side of things, with Australia quartet Pat Cummins (up one place to third), Nathan Lyon (up three spots to fifth), Mitchell Starc (up two places to eighth) and Josh Hazlewood (up two spots to 10th) all making ground inside the top 10 as India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin continues to hold sway at the top.

Phil Salt's incredible form has propelled the opener to second on the MRF Tyres T20I batting rankings, and a career high rating of 802.

Salt was one of a number of players from the high-scoring West Indies v England T20I series in the Caribbean to enjoy a jump after the latest update on Wednesday.

The England opener's scores of 119 and 38 in Trinidad moved him up 18 places, with a career-high rating of 802, 15 rating points clear of Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan in third (787).

Despite Salt's jump, it’s daylight between the rest of the field and Suryakumar Yadav in top spot, with the India batter still well clear on 887.

Fellow English batter Liam Livingstone also enjoyed a batting rankings jump, moving 27 places to 38th after knocks of 54* and 28 across the same matches. Livingstone's work also helped in the all-rounder category, moving four spots up to eighth (175). His move meant compatriot Moeen Ali and Shadab Khan of Pakistan share equal-ninth spot (173).

West Indies claimed the five-match T20I series 3-2, claiming victory in the final match, largely on the back of their bowling, keeping England to just 132 before completing a chase in the final over six wickets down.

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein took 2/20 from four overs in the victory, and moved two spots up to fourth (683), overtaking the Sri Lankan pair of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana (679 and 677 respectively). Gudakesh Motie jumped 75 spots after claiming 3/24 (4) in the same outing, while Reece Topley on the England side has moved into the top 10 bowlers with a 13-spot jump thanks to five wickets across the two matches across the week.

Meanwhile the ODI series between New Zealand and Bangladesh, as well as India's trip to South Africa, has led to a number of minor shuffles.

Shoriful Islam's fine performance with ball in hand saw him clime 24 spots to 35th, while young India left-armer Arshdeep Singh moved up 41 spots, though still outside the top 100.

On the batting side, Najmul Hossain Shanto (up nine spots to equal-49th) made a move, while South Africa's Tony de Zorzi jumped into the top 100 with a move of 39 spots.

Soumya Sarkar's electric innings of 169 (151) against the Black Caps helped him climb 52 spots, while Sanju Samson also jumped up 54 spots to a rating of 405.

Sarkar broke Sachin Tendulkar's 13-year record for the highest ODI score by a sub-continent player in New Zealand, beating The Little Master's 163* in Christchurch.

Samson made 108 (114) batting at No.3 in Paarl, as India defended 296 in the third ODI against the Proteas.

ICC

South Africa veteran Dean Elgar, Australia all-rounder Mitch Marsh also rise in the latest ICC Men's Player Rankings update.
India's Virat Kohli has brought in the new year by moving back into the top ten of the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings, climbing to ninth after the latest update on Wednesday.

Kohli's 38 and 76 in India's defeat to South Africa was enough for the 35-year-old to move four places (761), positioned as the top India batter in the list.

On the other side, Proteas stalwart Dean Elgar will likely bow out as a top-20 batter after his exploits in the first Test in Centurion, climbing 19 places to 17th (680) ahead of his final appearance.

Elgar stuck an imperious 185 against the tourists to set up an innings victory, helping the Proteas to 12 World Test Championship points in the process.

Over in Australia, their Boxing Day Test meeting with Pakistan saw minor movements on the batting front, with Mitchell Marsh's flurry leading to the most noteworthy change, moving 16 place up to 52nd (504). Mohammad Rizwan enjoyed a four-place leap after his aggressive knock, while Travis Head kept his top 10 spot despite a quiet Boxing Day Test and a four-spot dip, with a rating of 754.

New Zealand Kane Williamson still holds a marginal lead (864) from Joe Root (859), with Australia's Steve Smith (820) in third looking to climb during the Sydney Test beginning on Wednesday.

India batter Virat Kohli has been a fan favourite throughout his illustrious career and reveals the impact crowds can have on all players during the ICC World Test Championship Final

On the Test bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah re-entered the rankings following his return to Test cricket, positioned in fifth (767), marginally behind compatriot Ravindra Jadeja (774). Marco Jansen's efforts led to a three-place jump to 22nd (618), though saw an five-place jump in the all-rounder rankings to 8th, moving to a career best rating of 268.

Over in the Australia/Pakistan series, new face Aamer Jamal continues to make a strong first-series impression, moving up another 17 spots on the bowling rankings to 57th.

The quick claimed 3/64 and 2/74, also scoring crucial runs and moving up 34 rungs to 68th on the all-rounder rankings.

Movements also were made in the T20I Player Rankings, with Bangladesh taking on New Zealand and the UAE hosting Bangladesh.

Mitch Santner's four-wicket haul in Mount Maunganui provided the biggest headline in movements across the shortest format, moving up eight places to eighth (657). Shoriful Islam's excellent week led to a 32 spot jump, with Mustafizur Rahman also moving five spots to 22nd (605).

There was action aplenty in Sharjah with Afghanistan edging the Emiratis 2-1 in the three-match series, with players from both sides enjoying jumps.

Afghan batter Ibrahim Zadran led the moves with the bat, enjoying a 14-spot leap to 33rd following a half-century among his week. On the bowling side, UAE's Ali Naseer (up 29 places) and Muhammad Jawadullah (up 22 spots) were the biggest movers.

The ICC World Test Championship 2023 winners Australia have now regained their position at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Test Team Rankings following India's 1-1 series draw in South Africa.
