India down to Number 3!

First the Kiwis knock them out of the World Cup, then they overtake them in the Test rankings. Ouch!
 
Congrats Australia

With Smith and Warner back, they are overall the best side in Test cricket just about right now.

But India had a reign and I don’t see this becoming a reign. Probably going to be musical chairs for a bit.

streaks r meant to be broken ! Australia's streak of 16 continuous test wins was broken in kolkota 2001, india by india.

India stayed at number 1 position for almost 3.5 years since october 2016 , a feat (no.1 position for 3.5 years) impossible for other asian countries like pakistan , sri lanka , bangladesh & afghanistan.
 
Australia will have to win something in Asia to prove their no.1 credentials. They attained the no.1 spot thanks to the bashing given to Kiwis and Pakistan at home.

India clearly were no.1 team from 2016 to 2020 first quarter. Now only we have started getting competition from Australia, New Zealand and to an extent England. Let's see if they can compete better than India and maintain the no.1 spot.

It’s because of annual rounding up. India’s great home series went one year further back (or excluded from consideration) while recent results took comparatively higher weightage- after the AUS tour, it might go further down.
 
Now that we are not number 1, I will say who cares about these rankings?

If Afganistan and Bangladesh comes in the sentence then it means the level. Anyways India was great at home and average away. Well done boys for the lo h streak. Hope more teams like Pakistan Srilanka also come close.

If we beat full strength Aus in their backyard even the harshest Indian team critic on PP will call India the world's best team no matter what the table shows. A very big if, I am talking about once in a generation upset if Kohli and his boys can pull it off.

Stop crying. India were number 1 without playing a single Test against Pakistan home or away since 2007. The biggest joke number 1 ranking in the history of ICC. Thank God it’s over and it remains as a reminder of the delusion BCCI propaganda had spread post 2010

I know man we wont win and I also know the only reason we won last time bcoz Australia was playing without its main players. I am a big critic of our test team and always knew we are not that good as the rankings suggest.

I was joking on my previous post just to rile a few posters and extract some reaction :inti
 
A great reign at the top. Unfortunately this team is now ageing and players look slightly past their prime. Australia genuinely look a top side. Congrats to the Aussies. Rankings look correct imo.
 
Rankings look correct but a 4 year time period to consider rankings is far too large. Would have been better suited if it was limited to the last 2 year range so that dominance is more accurately reflected. Nevertheless, a good run at the top by India and congratulations to Kohli

Pakistan are at no 7 in test ranking and Sri Lanka are 5th with what I can see in the OP.

You are lucky that we are not playing Pakistan otherwise if we would have played, then you would probably be lying at bottom alongside BD and Afghanistan. India are massive Asian track bullies, kya hi jeet paate humse, matches to sub continent me hi hota..

Unlucky we didn't play Pakistan otherwise we would have continued to remain no.1 by just winning in Asia and West Indies.

Accept your shortcomings instead of coming up with pathetic excuses about Australia having to prove their credentials as No.1 by playing well in Asia. The reason why you will be 5th after the Aussies will be done 4-0 this winter!

I don't need to accept the shortcomings of Indian team, everyone is well aware of that and even I have highlighted it time and again.
You do know that attaining a no.1 status in test cricket is not a huge achievement but maintaining it for a longer period is. The fact that you still moan about Pakistan achieving no.1 rank for 2 months tells us all about who need to accept the shortcomings of their team.

Pakistan played their home test matches in UAE which suited their game as Younis Khan is a brilliant player of slow UAE wickets. Facing any non Asian team in UAE is always a huge advantage to your side, so this not playing at home wickets cry makes really no sense.

India are unbelievably strong in the subcontinent, they made Kagiso Rabada look like an average bowler when he toured India. Pretty much every single time when India played SL, Ashwin outbowled Herath in his own backyard. I have all reasons to claim that if India would have played Pakistan, we would have done much better because currently it's a far superior team to the Pakistan side who are down at no.7 in ranking.

It's not something to be decided by us or in our hands. Winning against Pakistan is not the benchmark for attaining no.1 spot today, if Indian team is a great one, then they have to win outside Asia, simple as that.

Otherwise, for attaining no 1 spot, you just have to be better than others from your era and India were. Now, Australia looks good and NZ are playing their best but again, they have to do it consistently and across different conditions to be considered a great team.

I think Australia deserves the top spot for now. They were brilliant in the Ashes and beat Pak and NZ ruthlessly at home while India were awful in NZ.
 
Those who diss India for being hollow number 1, how do they digest Australia being no.1 when they are even more abject in difficult terrains, like subcon?

All they have done is to bully two mental midgets at home. And yes, they drew with a Jimmy less England!

Just because India is your arch rival doesn't mean you should throw all logic out of window!
 
As for us, we had it coming considering we lost a full year when we had an enviable record of 12/1 in '16.

It is between 3 and 4 years. May 2017 onwards till present for current rankings. May 2018 onwards in May 2021. And the last 12-24 months is given more weighting at 100%. Results before that are 50%.
 
Aus was struggling at the middle of the table year or two ago, but a good comeback. However, teams were very closely placed in the middle not too long ago.

People might be surprised with the fact that Pak could have been a contender for no 1 spot again or atleast top 3 if they wouldnt have faltered in their home series against Srl and NZ. I guess its the consistency which makes the difference but one would have expected Pak to do well as before those two series Pak was unbeaten in UAE for 7-8 years.

Nevertheless, its shows decent consistency (Winning at home and competing in some countries away) for couple of years can give good rewards.
 
Aus go to the top of the Test rankings having only won 4 of their last 9 Test series:
Won 3-0 vs NZ 019-20.
Won 2-0 vs Pak 019.
Drew 2-2 in Eng 019.
Won 2-0 vs SL 019.
Lost 2-1 vs Ind 018-19.
Lost 1-0 in UAE vs PK 018.
Lost 3-1 in SA 018.
Won 4-0 vs Eng 017-18.
Drew 1-1 in BD 017.

They still have to beat Pakistan away to prove a point - Rankings just mean which team is consistently better etc It doesnt mean they cant lose to a team ranked 7. Last time Pakistan played India at home they drew an away series where India was massive favorites.
 
Rankings is just about form guide, results and performance. Not about where it happened. It is not about home and away performance. Wasn't designed to account for that. But over the course of 3-4 years you'd have had to have some decent results away from home to be a highly ranked side or the top ranked side as you can't play all of your cricket at home. No can one fluke getting there. Anyone who gets there deserves it.

They are secondary to World Test Championship now.
Even ODI rankings won't matter anymore once the ICC ODI Super League starts. Was due to start this month.

It is hugely unfair to countries like Pakistan who don't get home advantage.
Just imagine where Australia and India would stand without home advantage.
I always feel that away wins should always account for more ranking points than home wins.

I am talking about the one before as these are so long ago I have forgotten quit a bit. The GAP has been big on paper since 2003 WC even that WC only on paper teams were closer as Pakistan was an aged side all their star bowlers apart from shoaib over 35 (well over).

Record has shown even with weaker sides Pakistan have done well in india so yes they still have to prove a point but now that they are no longer No.1 it matters less anyway.

This issue will be even bigger in cup style competition like Test Championship for instant if Pakistan were to qualify and win without playing India it cant be called Test Championship how can one be called winner without facing one of the major test playing nation participating in it.
 
If Pakistan start playing their home series regularly at their real home in front of their supporters they can also be in Top 4 too. :inti

Australia and Tim Paine should be very proud. It seemed like they had hit rock bottom after Cape Town and things only got worse in UAE and at home against India. But I guess it speaks to the naturally fighting and competitive Australian spirit. They always manage to come back. Paine has led them really well through thick and thin and deserves alot of credit imo.

Meanwhile Bangladesh has slipped below Afghanistan in the Test Rankings, a team that literally got test status two years ago.

Only once did Pakistan have "done well" against India with a weaker side and that was the 2005 series where Pak team had a middle order of Inzi , YK and MoYo. And the first two had first innings scores of 184 and 267 respectively in the game they won. Agree India were a better side , but the gap wasn't as wide as it is now. India now are a vastly improved test side especially in the bowling department and Pak's batting against spin bowling has regressed dramatically. A series between the two teams anywhere in the SC would be a one-sided affair.

Well said. Absolutely agree with the aging of the Australia team but I believe they won't have trouble replacing them.
 
Pakistan at No.7 says a lot tbh. Azhar Ali, Shan Masood and Asad Shafiq still find themselves in the team. Pakistan are No.7 and from the looks of it, it could be worse.

Talk about nitpicky filtering. :))

India have won thrice the number of series' Pakistan won in SENA since that tour I mentioned. And besides, I don't get why we're talking about SENA stats here. If India and Pakistan play a test series, it would always be in Asia. Now I suggest you to check both teams' record in Tests in Asia since the mentioned tour. I'm afraid you are in for a big disappointment. :)

I think Pakistan, given a year of developing their batsmen and young bowlers, would probably beat India in England...whereas India probably beats them in Australia.
 
Glad Misbahs is here. He will make our team strong at home and at least competitive in England and New Zealand.
 
India had a memorable reign and I think well deserved considering how consistent they were at home and decently competitive away as well. Their last NZ tour was a horror show which played a big role in this, it was probably the worst tour after some time they have had after their last Eng's tour.
 
Pakistan shuffling along in 7th place.

What a mediocre Test team we have become in recent times.

We keep using the excuse that we are in a rebuilding phase, but how long can that excuse keep being used.

Difference of Pak being in top 3 or 4 vs being no 7 is loosing home series to Srl and NZ in UAE. Just recently Pak was able to beat Srl in Pak 1-0 which could have been 2-0 if it wasnt for rain. If Pak starts to get as many home series at actual home as some other, I only see improvement in rankings from there.

Poor part of last 2-3 years for Pak in tests was faltering in home series which isnt gonna happen in every season. Pak has won last home series against Aus, Eng, Srl, WI while with SA the series was drawn, so Pak can be as dangerous at home as any other team especially with Babar, Shaheen and other young players in the picture gaining experience and finding their feet at test level. If teams start touring regularly in Pak then that would be a different ball game altogether with much better curators and setup than before along with players playing where they have been brought up which makes a much bigger difference than many realize.

Last time India played a series in Pakistan they lost too.

Until India and Pakistan play each other you can only speculate. Fact is Pakistan is comfortably ahead in this rivalry. Pakistan has won more head-to-head. Pakistan has won more series in India than India has in Pakistan. And it didn't take Pakistan 50 years to win a series in India which is as long as it took India to win one in Pakistan.

Pakistan's record in England is much better than India's whereas India's record against Australia in Australia is slightly better. Pakistan have played a total of 136 matches in SENA where as has played 155 matches in SENA. India tour these countries regularly, players get the experience of playing in those conditions still our record there is not that impressive.

If a series is played in England/NZ, Pakistan will be favorite. In Aus/ SA it will be 50-50. :inti

Agreed 100% Aus is not no 1 right know they should do something in Asia to be taken seriously cause India was not dominant in Sena but there was something atleast but with aus there is nothing

I mean we are not idiots we can tell in test cricket if these teams ever meet who will win

But in 2016 and 2017 it was close test cricket tbh and it would have been a fun series to watch
 
win in india first australia. That's not going to happen anyway so they are place holders. won't be long. Won't be long at all mate.
