Ghafari six-for steals the show to stun SA U19s in World Cup opener

Friday, 17 January 2020

Shafiqullah Ghafari claimed career-best figures of six for 15 for Afghanistan under-19s as they sealed a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the opening match of the ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup in Kimberley on Friday.

The spinner shone to help dismiss the host nation for 129 before Imran Mir (57) and Ibrahim Zadran (52) struck impressive half-centuries to make light work of the chase.

After winning the toss and batting at the Diamond Oval, the Junior Proteas were rocked by two early wickets from Fazal Farooq (2/43). It was then up to the South African captain, Bryce Parsons (40), and Luke Beaufort (25), who teamed up for a 55-run stand for the third wicket.

The home side was then pegged back once again, as the spinners came into the attack to pick up the remaining eight wickets.

Noor Ahmed (2/44) and Ghafari combined to lethal effect, as the former picked up the crucial scalps of Parsons and Beaufort before Ghafari cleaned up the middle-order and tail-enders for just 67 runs.

In reply and despite losing the early wicket of captain, Farhan Zakhail (11), Afghanistan never looked troubled in pursuit of the low score, with the experienced Zadran and Mir putting on a match-winning 80-run partnership.

South Africa’s Achille Cloete (2/20) and Tiaan van Vuuren (1/14) made inroads but it was not enough as the subcontinent outfit cantered to victory with 25 overs remaining.

South Africa under-19 - 129 all out after 29.1 overs

Bryce Parsons 40 (42), Gerald Coetzee 38 (23); Shafiqullah Ghafari 6-15

Afghanistan under-19 - 130-3 after 25 overs

Imran Mir 57 (48), Ibrahim Zadran 52 (72); Achille Cloete 2-20

Afghan under 25 is a very good team, with a new Rashid Khan in Shafiq took 6-15 today, has a very good googlie and very good left arm pacer, Fazal.

We keep on blaming Afghanistan of overage but what about Pakistan?

Age fudging is a serious issue but on topic, southafrica is in serious trouble tbh.. Seems like they dont have any decent talent coming through the ranks..

Tino is right here. These Afghans are atleast 25 years old. It looks men vs boys.

Tuned in for a couple of overs and this Seales kid looks impressive. Very good seam position and looks to be able to clock 135-140 kph from the naked eye.

Many Indians here claim that Indian players are genuinely U19 but that myth has been debunked as well. Last WC win of India should be stripped since the MOTM of the final was overage and also one fast bowler too.

Age fudging is a serious issue but on topic, southafrica is in serious trouble tbh.. Seems like they dont have any decent talent coming through the ranks..

The big fast bowler is a real talent. He will also become a decent 8 at the higher level and Bird is also a potential Saffer in the next 3 years.

He has been playing SA domestic for a while now. Bird I heard had offers from England and I won't be surprised if he actually moves to England.

Bird has got a good chance to play as both the openers are in their 30s and he will open with Markram.

Most of the team is white, most of the batsman are white, so who will keep him out?

Only 5 white players can play in a side so most of the players are not white. There has to be at least 2 Africans as well and SA in this Test series is missing the target.

Revised target for ZIM's 137/6 (28), is 130 in 22 overs!!!!!

I know, it's based on a mathematical model based on past samples, but I am sure the iteration is skewed here because of sampling error. Boys are at 124/1 (11) now, therefore they are well and truly rampaging towards the revised target, but if this equation is applied in International game at similar stage ......

Bengladesh is the team that will win the WC

Was watching the hightlights of some their batsmen, their academy/system is doing an amazing job. Muhammad Naim is another great example.

Nah

They're the 6th favourites after eng, aus, pak, ind, and WI according to the odds.

Leave out discussion of odds - they are for betting companies. This is a cricket forum.

If you wish to compare sides and want to discuss chances of winning etc, use stats etc.

I know but they always play their best teams in the main series and play the quotas in the BD series. It's an average, not every match does it have to be met.

I am not sure how & who sets these odds but ENG U19 team has lost like 10 of the last 12 games against BD boys, one wash out & one tie with 4-5 of these games played in UK itself. English team can win the tournament, but they were struggling against SRL as well and definitely shouldn’t be among favourites.

This BD U19 team is quite good actually, but you ask me - not even India, I would like to avoid those Afghan men in KO games. Some of their kids must be happy that Dad is playing U19 WC!!!!

Who do YOU think are the top 5 favourites (in order)?

I do think it’s a very good unit - should make the SF. But in this format from 1-8 on their day can win or lose off game.

West Indies beat Australia for the first time at the ICC U19 World Cup

Nyeem Young starred with the bat as West Indies sealed a maiden win over Australia at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup at the eighth attempt.

Jayden Seales did the damage with the ball to hustle Australia out for 179 and Young’s measured innings in reply saw West Indies to victory with 24 balls to spare of their Group B opener.

Bangladesh and UAE were emphatic winners on the second day of action in South Africa, while Japan’s ICC event debut against New Zealand was abandoned due to rain.

West Indies claim famous win

West Indies outlasted Australia by three wickets to lay down a marker at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley.

Young was the matchwinner for the Windies with a priceless 61 from 69 balls just as Australia were bearing down on his side’s tail.

"It's good to get a win," Young said. “It doesn’t matter the opponent, but it is good to get it against Australia. I am happy to get it across the line, and I think it shows how we fight with the ball and the bat.”

Australia batted first and were bowled out for just 179. Jake Fraser-McGurk fought a lone battle, with a defiant 84 from 97 balls at the top of the order.

Wickets tumbled around him though as Seales (four for 49) and Matthew Forde (three for 24) ran riot. Patrick Rowe struck 40 to give the young Aussies a sniff, but 179 was well below par.

Windies slipped to 92 for five in the chase, thanks chiefly to a fine spell of leg-spin bowling by Tanveer Sangha whose promise has already seen him feature in the Big Bash League.

His four for 30 ran the Windies desperately close, and they breathed a sigh of relief when his allocation came to an end.

Beyond the mystery of Sangha, West Indies found comfort through Young's mature knock and got home with three overs and as many wickets to spare.

Tigers defy Zimbabwe in opener

Bangladesh had to withstand bad weather, loss of overs and a determined Zimbabwe but still managed to start their Group C campaign with a towering nine-wicket win at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

Zimbabwe put up 137 for six in 28.1 overs before rain had its say.

It proved tough to pace an innings, but contributions from Milton Shumba (28), Emmanuel Bawa (27) and Dane Schadendorf (22 not out) were supplemented by Tadiwanashe Marumani's 31 from 33 balls.

With their innings halted, Zimbabwe looked to restrict the Tigers with ball in hand.

But Bangladesh came out all guns blazing, with Tanzid Hasan smacking 32 off just ten balls with three sixes and as many fours.

Parvez Hossain's 58 not out from 33 balls was just as brutal, and the game was over in a hurry.

"It was exactly what we wanted. We wanted the two points from the first match," Bangladesh captain Akbar Ali said.

"It was a brilliant start from both the openers. There is some room for improvement on our bowling, and we need to get our lengths right.”

Mahmadul Hasan notched 38 not out to finish things off, with the young Tigers reaching the revised target of 130 in just 11.2 overs.

UAE off to perfect start

Jonathon Figy struck a perfectly-paced century to guide UAE to a confident victory over Canada in their Group D opener in Bloemfontein.

Figy notched 102 not out to see his side home with 68 balls to spare in pursuit of a target of 232.

"The mindset today was getting through 50 overs. We knew if we batted 50 overs we would get the target, so we played with a positive mindset,” he said.

"I’ve played a couple of one-day internationals coming in and I was using some of that experience and form coming into this game. A century in the first match is a good feeling.”

Canada posted 231 for eight in their 50 overs with some stout contributions from Mihir Patel and Randhir Sandhu (35), who combined for 82 for the first wicket.

Patel was then joined by Akhil Kumar (30), and they looked to be building towards a testing target but Patel was run out for 90 after sharp work from Ossam Hassan and the innings stuttered.

Muhammad Kamal lifted the tempo with 31 from 17 balls at the end, but Canada felt they’d fallen short.

In response, Figy was exceptional. His 101-ball stay was studded by 13 boundaries and a six, underlying his class at this level.

Skipper Aryan Lakra was a perfect foil with a steady 66 and the chase was unhurried, with the UAE getting home before the 40th over.

Kiwis frustrated by rain

New Zealand and Japan shared a point each after their Group A opener was abandoned because of rain in Potchefstroom.

Having been sent in to bat first, the Kiwis were 195 for two from 28.5 overs when persistent rain forced the match to be called off in the afternoon by umpires Sam Nogajski and Iknow Chabi.

They had made a good start – anchored by Rhys Mariu (51) and Oli White (80) – before both batsmen fell in quick succession after having piled up a century opening stand.

Fergus Lellman (37 not out) and Beckham Wheeler-Greenall were still at the crease when the players were forced off the field.

The Japanese, who are playing in the tournament for the first time, will next face India in their next round-robin group fixture at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Japan captain Ashley Thurgate said: "It's good that we got to play against New Zealand. We won't forget this day for the rest of our lives.

“Unfortunately, we could not finish the game but standing on the field for a World Cup match was just amazing."

The New Zealanders will take on Sri Lanka at the same venue on Sunday, with White pleased that his team showed fluent batting form in their opening match.

"We started off alright,” said White. “Rhys and myself got a pretty good start. Hopefully that continue to the next match and for the rest of the tournament.”

What a top bloke. I wish this guy all the success

Speed gun error most likely but was he bowling around at these speeds consistently or just a one bowl glitch? Also were others bowling at unusually high speed as well?

I will do the same, its useless channel now. I have been watching under 19 WC live matches since 2004 and here in 2020, no live stream by Willow. No competition they don;t care, easy money for them.

Pak, Eng and probably WI teams are better than this Indian team. Afg will give it a tough fight. Unless Dravid has something kept for the death matches, India is not going beyond semi this year.

Indian team is very good, I watched their match Vs SL today. Solid batting and backed by very good bowling. Tyagi will play for India in 2-3 years, he was bowling at mid 140s today, very good runup and action. He is better than Mavi and Nagarkoti.

The bowling was subpar.

They kept on bowling full tosses but the sri lankans kept on missing them.

Don't forget that this Indian bowling attack conceded 270 against Zim in the warm ups.

India u19 have a very good batting unit that can score 300 every match and a decent bowling attack!! Bangladesh look so good along with Pakistan!! Anyone of these three will win the title!!

What a dream match for SIddhesh veer. He wasn't even part of the original squad. HE went in as a replacement after an injury to a player. Man of the match first match

Definitely such a stylish batting unit. They play on both sides. They all pull the ball. Siddhesh veer is outrageous he reverse sweeps a seamer. Then that dinky lap shot over keeper.

Dissapointed with the preformance of the Canadian team, I saw a couple of their players play before the WC and they looked quite good, Muhammad Kamal in particular looked very threatening. I'm suprised they weren't able to give UAE a good fight.

Summary of the day's play (19th January)

Reigning champions India start with victory at ICC U19 World Cup
Defending champions India got their ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title defence off to a perfect start with an impressive 90-run win over Sri Lanka in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Siddhesh Veer of India bats with Kamil Mishara of Sri Lanka looking on during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Group A match between India and Sri Lanka at Mangaung Oval on January 19, 2020 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Siddhesh Veer was the standout as his unbeaten 44 off 27 balls helped set a challenging target of 297 for four, before he was one of three Indian bowlers to take two wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 207.

Victory sends India straight to the top of Group A in what they will hope is the start of a successful quest to claim a record-extending fifth ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title.

In Sunday’s other game, two-time champions Pakistan made short work of Scotland as their fast bowlers skittled the opposition for 75 – a target they then chased down inside 12 overs.

India seal big win in style

An impressive all-round display meant India were comfortable victors in their opening Group A match on Sunday, securing a 90-run triumph against Sri Lanka in Bloemfontein.

Half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Priyam Garg and Dhruv Jurel helped India post a commanding 297 for four, before two wickets apiece from Akash Singh, Siddhesh Veer and Ravi Bishnoi proved crucial in dismissing their sub-continent compatriots for 207.

India lost the toss and were asked to bat first at the Mangaung Oval, with their openers setting the ideal platform as Jaiswal and Divyansh Saxena (23) combined for a 66-run partnership.

The highly-rated Jaiswal went onto record an impressive 59 off 74 balls, including eight fours, after finding another partner in Tilak Varma (46).

After Jaiswal was caught behind, Varma then teamed up with Garg, to put on 59 runs for the third wicket.

The latter raised his bat for a measured 56 off 72 balls to continue the defending champions’ impressive outing.

India then had Jurel’s undefeated 56 off 48 balls and Veer’s thrilling cameo of 44 off 27 deliveries (six fours, one six) to thank as they ended with a dominant total of 297 following the pair’s 63-run stand.

In the second innings, Sri Lanka needed a good start from their top order and Kamil Mishara (39) and Ravindu Rasantha (49) obliged with an 87-run, second-wicket partnership before Jaiswal (one for 18) made the breakthrough to leave them 106 for two.

Sensing a momentum shift in the game, India pressed on with the ball to take wickets at regular intervals, despite a battling 50 off 59 balls from young Lions captain, Nipun Perera.

Veer (two for 34) along with Kartik Tyagi (one for 27), Singh (two for 29) and Bishnoi (two for 44) picked up six middle and lower-order scalps, along with a run out, for just 94 runs to bowl out their opponents with 4.4 overs to spare.

Player of the match, India’s Veer, said: “I was really happy with my performance, the shots I played came off which helped me with my innings. It was a good start for the team and we are happy.”

Pakistan quicks dismantle Scotland in Group C opener

Pakistan's menacing pace attack proved too strong for Scotland, paving the way for a convincing seven-wicket victory in Group C.

Scotland won the toss and elected to bat but were bowled out for just 75 in 23.5 overs, as Pakistan seamers Muhammad Waseem (five for 12), Tahir Hussain (three for 23) and Abbas Afridi (two for 32) tore through their batting order.

After an early scare, Pakistan then reached the required target off just 11.4 overs for the loss of three wickets.

The 2004 and 2006 champions proved that their bowling attack – which also includes highly-rated spinner Aamir Ali – could be their strongest weapon in this year’s tournament.

Uzzair Shah (20) and Tomas Mackintosh (17) top scored for Scotland and were the only batsmen to reach double figures in the innings, as the Scots failed to build any meaningful partnerships.

In chasing the total, Pakistan lost two early wickets but captain Rohail Nazir (27 from 23 balls) steadied the chase and Irfan Khan (38 not out) then picked up the mantle once Rohail was clean bowled by Kess Sajjad to record a comprehensive win.

After the match, Pakistan captain Rohail said: "We are happy that our bowlers did a great job. Hopefully, we can continue with this same intensity heading to the next match."

And player of the match Waseem added: "Tahir and Abbas gave us a good start with the ball. I came in and tried to bowl yorkers and bouncers; which is what brought me success."

Pakistan next face Zimbabwe on Wednesday with Scotland playing Bangladesh on Tuesday – both fixtures in Potchefstroom.

Tyagi doesn’t look u19 tbh

Yes he does look like under 19, please stop this age related non-sense with every discussion of young players. I suggest we talk more about their skill and performance rather than age. So far whatever I have seen in this world cup, Tyagi is best fast bowler, I'm yet to see Pakistani Tahir and Wasim though. Tyagi is fast, bowled around 142-145 km/h today , has a beautiful action and follow through and moves the ball both ways.

It is a genuine issue and should be discussed

You are free to disagree to me he looks at least 20-21

paks fast bowlers don't look up to that much. pretty slow
imagine the reaction and saltiness if aghanistan won this tournament. would be pretty entertaining. kind of hoping they do

With serious punishment lying ahead nobody is going to cheat their way out. For the record he did come through different age groups like under-14, under-15 now under-19. He made debut a couple of years back for first class which is right about the time they make debut.

Are these players actually U19?

They are unless they are forged when they were very young while getting admitted to school. There are hospital records, school records. They will track your birth history down in a matter of couple of days. There is a verification system in place as well.

Are 17 year olds supposed to look 12 and have tiny bodies? I had plenty of classmates in 10th grade who, in today's standards, would be considered look like 24 year Olds. Many Pakistani teen boys have beards by 10th grade.
And they did not all fake their age.

These guys are mostly teenagers. Or hormones injected into today's food have sped up the aging process

Nyeem Young from WI is impressive. Already 2 explosive fifties. 3 wickets at an ER of 4.55. Future Holder?

Its a shame Jack Haynes failed for England, really nice lad. At the age group levels he was just as good as Tom Banton

League cricket has really boosted WI cricket, youngsters now see a lot of money in cricket whereas it wasn't possible 20 years ago.

Money makes a huge difference
