MSK Prasad, the former India wicket-keeper and former chief national selector, was a very proud man on Thursday for two reasons. First, Shaikh Rashid, a native of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, played a crucial 94-run knock against Australia to help India reach the Under-19 World Cup final. Second, Rashed is a product of Andhra’s strong academy structure, which Prasad himself created as the Director of Cricket Operations of the State Association.
The three academies with accommodation facilities were there to tap talent in the heart of the state. Rashed is the face of the success of the structure, which aims to showcase cricketing talents among the less privileged children.
“A lot of credit should go to his father Balisha. Rashed comes from a very humble background. I was told her father worked in a small pesticide store. But she did not stop her son from dreaming big. The best thing about people like Balisha is that they have a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude towards life, “Prasad told TOI on Thursday.
Balisha struggles to communicate in any language other than Telugu. “My son is very young and he plays well. Hyderabad May Thoda Khel. Financially, it was difficult for him to manage. “My son has been good at cricket since he was very young. He played in Hyderabad. We just finished. Now I work in the SBI loan department,” said Balisha in a broken voice. Hindi on the phone. But the excitement in his speech could not be missed.
“Andhra Academy in Mangalgiri was a huge help and relief for us. Coach Krishna Rao Sir was very helpful, ”said Balisha. Balisha went to Hyderabad in search of livelihood. Rashed is not yet 10 years old but is doing well in inter-district tournaments. It was here that he was selected for the Andhra Cricket Association Academy when he was nine years old. He was given accommodation, clothes, food and education in the hostel. The academy also paid for the school.
“The association has adopted him. The academies have adopted 30-35 cricketers like Rashed. The academy costs Rs 15,000 per student per month. His appetite for runs and his commitment to the game are evident. He will blindly follow what he was told, “said Prasad.
“He’s doing so well at the state level that you can make a difference.
“The lessons of his life have taught him to understand what the situation demands. We chose him based on his cricketing potential. He was a good student, ”said Rao.
The academy also arranged for Rashed to travel to the UK at the age of 14. The academy contracted Dr. Sameer Pathak and arranged exposure trips for two or three children each year under a program called ‘Cricket Beyond Boundaries’.
“Rashed went for exposure. He traveled alone, went to school in the UK for two months and learned cricket. It was a life exposure for him. He has overcome language barriers. This has made a difference in him. Circumstances make you a leader and Rashed becomes one through his journey. He played very well, ”Rao added.
Rashed is seen as one of the biggest stars to emerge from Andhra cricket. He is on a mission to fulfill his father’s dream. But he is also an example of what can be achieved if the authorities invest heavily in the system.
