ICC World Cup 2023: Heartbreak for Pakistan (270) as South Africa (271/9) win Match 26 by 1 wicket

Good cricket all over. If pak had somehow contained those extras and stopped some runs like RSA's fielders did. This would ve been a easy one for pak

Indian posters freely troll on this site but nothing happens. Waah re PP :salute
Don't really see it as trolling, the chasm between Pak and India in cricketing terms is vast, and this loss is another bad loss in a string of poor defeats.

I'm unaffected by the trolling TBH - it's more like cheap frills for Indian fans trying to stick it to Pak fans, when in reality there's nothing to stick to us. Realistic Pak fans know that we have been poor for a long time.

Wow what a game of cricket. PCT were 10-15 runs short today. Fantastic effort today and good over South Africa to cross over the line, it will do great for their confidence

Proud of my team. Even with all the unnecessary below the belt criticism directed at them, they showed up and played really well

I am in literal tears, cant even imagine what Babar and the team must be going through

True.. fought well, was expecting a roll over but they fought till the end and were really hungry for a win, which was good to see. Not having spinners in this world cup really hampered Pakistan.

It's all good, need to make a few necessary shifts before Australia tour. That will be much tougher.

Babar’s trust in Nawaz comes to fruition again.

Even if we had more runs and Nawaz got hit for 6 sixes, Babar would still play him for the next 10 years. He never learns this stubborn buffoon.

Could’ve brought Imad but ofc, he needs his ego untouched.

But I don’t think SA are taking this WC. If minnow level Pakistan did this, NZ and India are sending them back .
Yes their mandatory choke is still pending and got Pakistan postponed it.

Its nots just cricket, other sports as well the divide is massive between the two countries.

Also not even sports, every other field India is doing much better. Economy, education, space, foreign influence etc etc. I guess that comes with the territory of 70+ years of democratic rule vs 70+ years of army rule. India was also floundering till like the 90s early 2000s but that's the beautify of democracy eventually it gets its act together and makes the country prosper. We are yet to start our journey.

Gutting to lose like that but that shouldn't gloss over this failure. From the position Pakistan got into, they should have won the game.

The batting of the tailenders has been truly abysmal too.

Nawaz is one of the worst bowlers we've ever seen.

Agree, which is why I don't see it as trolling.

You can't really be offended by something if you basically recognise that it's the truth.

Getting cheap frills is lame, but meh... not a big deal.

Well the problem is NRR is bad so even if we catch up on points somehow, we'll lose out because of NRR. Unless the teams that we want to lose get absolutely thrashed.

most of us are not trolling man. Certainly not me. I personally want Pak in Semis as I believe they are easier to beat than Aus and NZ. Both have a number on India. But now that they have lost maybe we will have some fun later if BD beats Pak. But that will just be lighthearted fun..

South Africa won a nail-biting game against Pakistan, winning by one wicket in the crunch ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture in Chennai.

It was Keshav Maharaj who held his nerve to hit the winning runs for the Proteas, who had looked well on course before losing four wickets for 25 runs with the finishing line in sight.

Pakistan pushed with all their might for the final wicket, but were unable to secure what would have been a famous victory under the Chidambaram lights.

Babar Azam (50) and Saud Shakeel (52) were the top scorers as Pakistan hit 270 in their first innings, with seven of the top eight reaching double figures.

But Tabraiz Shamsi’s four-wicket haul helped restrict the scoring rate, with Pakistan bowled out in the 47th over.

South Africa’s effort with the ball was all the more impressive given they’d been asked to bowl in sizzling temperatures and without the services of the injured Kagiso Rabada.

In the chase, Aiden Markram looked set to be steering South Africa to victory with an excellent knock, but fell to concussion substitute Usama Mir just nine runs short of his century, setting up a nervous finish to the game at the Chidambaram Stadium.

But South Africa clung on, and Maharaj’s flick to the backward square boundary got his team over the line and sparked huge celebrations.

Match 26: South Africa beat Pakistan by one wicket

South Africa’s big-hitting top order got away to a flier in search of their target of 271.

But Shaheen Shah Afridi ended an early flurry from Quinton de Kock (24) before Mohammad Wasim removed Temba Bavuma for 28.

And a strong third-wicket partnership came to an end when concussion substitute Usama Mir had Rassie van der Dussen out lbw for 21 to give Pakistan a chance with the score at 121/3.

The dangerous Heinrich Klaasen was next to go, removed by Wasim for just 12.

But as long as Aiden Markram was out in the middle South Africa looked in control, and the classy number four forged a handy partnership with David Miller to move the Proteas to a dominant position.

Miller’s 33-ball 29 featured two sixes and two fours before Afridi returned to keep the game alive, having the big-hitter caught behind.

Yet Marco Jansen kept the foot to the floor for South Africa as he slammed 20 from just 14 deliveries to leave South Africa needing just 36 to win when he was caught by Babar off Haris Rauf.

South Africa survived a brilliant spell from Shaheen Shah Afridi as the game came down to the wire, with only Gerald Coetzee dismissed in a period that could have sealed it.

And Afridi's fast-bowling companion Haris Rauf almost won it at the death for Pakistan.

First the pacer pulled off a stunning caught and bowled to remove Lungi Ngidi.

And then he thought he had Tabraiz Shamsi trapped lbw for the final match-winning wicket, only for the number 11 to survive thanks to umpire’s call.

But South Africa defied the description that has followed them for so long, holding their nerve to win it thanks to Maharaj.

A seeming shift in mindset saw Pakistan maintain an attacking approach for much of their innings, but they struggled to get a South Africa attack away at times. And the returning South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi put paid to a strong start, taking some key middle-order wickets to limit the innings.

Babar Azam elected to bat after winning the toss in hot and sultry conditions in Chennai, and they made two changes to the side. Hasan Ali was unwell with Mohammad Wasim Jr. coming into the team in his place, while Usama Mir was replaced by Mohammad Nawaz.

As expected, South Africa's regular skipper Temba Bavuma returned to lead the side, and he confirmed that South Africa would've also preferred to bat first in the hot conditions. Tabraiz Shamsi and Lungi Ngidi came into the team along with Bavuma, while Kagiso Rabada wasn't a part of the playing XI due to a lower back spasm.

The Proteas pacers showed early discipline and didn't bowl too many loose balls. Marco Jansen, in particular, troubled the batters with his height and left-arm angle, and he got the prized breakthrough of opener Abdullah Shafique (9) in the fifth over. The batter tried to lift a rising Jansen delivery above the square leg region but ended up finding Lungi Ngidi at backward square leg.

Babar arrived at the crease and freed his arms early on, assisted by a no-ball early on in his innings, duly dispatching the free-hit opportunity for four. Pakistan went for a number of attacking strokes thereafter and lifted the scoring rate. However, this came at the cost of Imam-ul-Haq's wicket in the seventh over. He went for a wide delivery from Jansen, and ended up giving a catch to slip.

Pakistan continued to live by the sword, with Mohammad Rizwan supplementing Babar with his aggressive strokeplay, and was given a life off his very first ball when Jansen dropped a tough return catch.

The Men in Green were sneaking in towards a scoring rate closer to six when Rizwan went for a pull against Gerald Coetzee and ended up edging one behind the wicket.
At three down, captain Babar was joined by Iftikhar Ahmed. The duo helped stabilise the innings over the next few overs. Despite some big shots from the two batters, disciplined work in the inner circle meant that they couldn't rotate the strike as often on a pitch that proved hard to score on.

The impressive Shamsi turned the screws on Pakistan with two big wickets after the 25-over mark. The spinner got rid of Iftikhar (21) in the 26th over, when the batter tried to go for a big hit and was taken brilliantly at long-on by Heinrich Klaasen.

And, a couple of overs later, a sharp review from Quinton de Kock accounted for Babar's wicket. Babar (50) tried to paddle Shamsi, but ended up gloving the ball to the keeper.

Pakistan's sixth-wicket stand between Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan overcame these middle-over tremors, to resurrect Pakistan. And their free-flowing play allowed the run-rate to pick up.

Shakeel’s run-a-ball 52 was the top score in the innings, and injected life into a team effort that was threatening to fizzle out.

And, at the other end, returning all-rounder Shabad stroked 43 from just 36 balls.

Mohammad Nawaz chipped in with his own run-a-ball 24, but South Africa stopped things getting out of control, taking frequent wickets to bowl Pakistan out for 270.

Shamsi’s 4/60 figures were game-changing, while Marco Jansen also impressed with his 3/43 from nine. And their combined efforts under the scorching Chennai sun proved just enough on the day.

Lol Gautam Gambhir is really jealous of Virat Kohli but he is praising that Aiden markram's shot which is the best shot of tournament.

Hard Luck Pak Fans. Your team tried. But they have to blame themselves. This was a 300 pitch and Pakistan did not even bat their 50 overs.

What are Pakistan's chances of qualification now? Are they still in contention??
Australia vs New Zealand game tomorrow will give a better idea

We have to win all 3
And hope
Australia loses 3 out of 4
They play New Zealand, England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh

OR

Win all 3 and hope New Zealand loses all 4 remaining games
They play Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and us

This was the playing XI of Pakistan. Very clear that Usama Mir is a substitute. So why was Mir allowed to bowl in the match in the 2nd innings?

Guys please have respect for sobbing supporters like myself and our team. Please do not start bashing them left, right and center

They put up a good fight. Even after all the unnecessary below the belt criticism directed at them

Lo g this was the last nail our coffin AFAIK Mir came on as a substitute due to Shadab injury

Mir coming in to replace concussed Shadab was fair

But I don’t recall Shadab complaining about his head when he was injured, he clearly had a shoulder injury

This for me is questionable

Hope aus loses to NZ, and England and hope we beat all 3 teams with a better rr then Australia?

Good luck. Sa game was good but guarantee life has now been sniffed out for Pakistan.

Boys are going to go in other games demotivated

Babar Azam: "I thought we were 10 to 15 runs short in our batting as we didn't finish well despite a good start. But our bowlers fought back really well"

Babar Azam: "we were very close and fought very well. But it was disappointing for everyone as we had an opportunity to win this match and stay in the tournament but we missed it"

They should make him speak in Urdu. He can't express himself well or speak in great depth in English.

I shall support south Africa from now on in this world cup. But the way they chased and almost lost it is hard to believe that they can beat India chasing

Very tight game finally! Congratulations to South Africa!
Hard luck, proud Pakistani fans. I understand your pain, I really do. Let us hope Pakistan plays positive cricket in the next three games in this WC and also hope they win them.

What a difference umpire's call can make but sometimes it comes down to fine margins like that when you don't give yourself breathing room.

Top order continues to be a failure and it was case yet again. Babar continues to only score pointless slow 50's that aren't meaningful in any way and getting out when the team needs. Ifti was sent up the order for god knows what reason and predictably got out against a spinner. He was sent up over Saud and I don't get it but sure, what's another mistake to Babar giant pile of mountain of mistakes.

Ifti opening the bowling? lolz ok. Shaheen got thrashed in his first over too. At least he brought Rauf in after the PP but the same pattern with Pakistan's bowling continues. It's an endless flow of runs in the first 20 overs and they try to recover at the end but its already too late.

Nice to see Wasim Jr. looking great. Another heart-break and the end of WC hopes for Pakistan. Worst case scenario for Pakistan during WC in terms of performance - even when them being out of form, hopes were they could still be OK but for the most part, they've been a very below average team with mediocre batting, horrific fielding and one of the worst bowling attacks in the WC. It has unfortunately culminated in this disaster.

In last match….when Pak desperately needed fast bowlers to bowl, Babar kept on giving over to Usama..

i agree both Usama and Nawaz are pathetic bowlers, but atleast Usama bowled well his last two overs and had gotten 2 wickets also..while Nawaz is a serious bottler and choker..has always choked under pressure, plus he never looked like taking a wicket..today bowled pathetic as usual.. we just clearly needed a wicket to win.. Usama also is pathetic but he does some times take wickets too.. WHY did Babar go to Nawaz?? Plzzz anyone explain..

Didn't see a single ball today due to work. Therefore cannot comment much.

However I can probably say that's our tournament done.

Babar captaincy I.Q. is worse than any other captain. He's more of a reactivate than pro active captain, and that Nawaz over at the end summed him up, when clearly Mir was the better wicket taking option.

Usama bowls full tosses and with 5 runs to defend, its a tough choice

I think Nawaz was expected to bowl wicket to wicket for lbw but he bowled a half tracker on the leg side with a tight off side field

Tough choice but can you really trust Usama to pick wicket?

I don't know why Nawaz was given that final over.

Should've given to Usama who is a leggie. Leggie could've been more threatening against Shamsi and Maharaj (both are right-handed).

Atleast he picked two wickets in this match.. Nawaz has been wicketless entire worldcup and even, most of Asia cup…although both Usama Nawaz are pathetic, I agree..but atleast go for the option who has atleast some chance of taking a wicket

Shaheen bowling between 134-136k's. Not quick enough to get wickets. He needs a long break after WC and fully recover from any niggles he has.

This makes no sense. 130 is more than enough to take wickets and in general is better than bowling 145.

Bowling Nawaz seemed to be a collective decision by the captain and a few other players - Rizwan, Afridi, etc. Perhaps the thought was to have a wicket to wicket bowling and Nawaz could do that. But he bowled the wrong line if not the wrong length too.

Well fought Pakistan. Congrats South Africa.

Babar was poor tactically, sending Saud after Ifti, giving Ifti the new ball, bowling Nawaz in the end instead of Usama. Didn't like the field placings as well, slip was too in front against quicks, third man not fine enough despite the opponent batsmen being late against Rauf,Wasim.I watched the match from the stadium and really enjoyed my day. Thanks to both teams for giving us the game of the tournament.

One thing is for sure. Pitches with par score of 270 provides most entertaining ODI match between two competitive teams. Flat tracks and slow rank turners both are boring.
