Australia v India, 2001
India win three-match series 2-1

An iconic moment from an iconic duo.An iconic moment from an iconic duo.
Australia arrived in India with captain Steve Waugh determined to conquer what he had labelled the ‘final frontier’. Firmly cemented as the world’s best Test team, Australia were on course to do just that after winning the first Test handsomely, thanks to centuries from Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist.

That was their record-extending 16th straight Test victory and they were on track for a 17th when they enforced the follow-on at Eden Gardens. For the better part of two days, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid conjured a miracle, and captains have feared the follow-on ever since. The pair put on 376 runs together, with Laxman scoring a double-century. India would go on to win that Test with stumps closing in quickly on day five, cementing the match’s status as one of the greatest in cricket history.

In the series decider, Hayden stepped up for Australia again, scoring a brilliant 203 in a total of 391. It turned out to be an effort in vain, as India replied with 501 in their first innings, thanks to a century from Sachin Tendulkar and fifties from SS Das, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Laxman and Dravid. The Australians did well to push India all the way from there, with the hosts scraping to victory by two wickets in the end.

England vs Sri Lanka, 2014
Sri Lanka win 0-1

Despair at one end. Elation at the other.Despair at one end. Elation at the other.
Sri Lanka won a multi-match Test series in England for the first time in 2014 but only by the barest of margins.

In the first Test, the Sri Lankans came as close as they possibly could to defeat without actually losing. Going into the final over, England still needed two wickets to secure victory. With his first delivery, Stuart Broad struck, removing Rangana Herath with a short ball. Four balls later, Broad was wheeling away in celebration after Nuwan Pradeep was given out lbw. But his and England’s joy was short-lived as a review quickly confirmed an inside edge. Pradeep went on to survive the final ball, but only just, edging just short of a packed slip cordon.

A Test later and England found themselves fighting for a draw. For 19 overs Anderson and Moeen Ali had denied the Sri Lankans, with Anderson getting through 50 deliveries without a run going into the final over. Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews turned to fast bowler Shaminda Eranga for his last roll of the dice.

The first four balls were met by loud cheers from the local crowd as Anderson stood tall. The fifth had his number – a short delivery that he could only fend into the hands of backward square leg. With that Sri Lanka sealed the most memorable of series wins.

Test cricket's first ever tie in 1960 or Anil Kumble's 10-for and a heroic Pakistan comeback in 1999? One of the 1960s' greatest ever series takes on a '90s classic.

1960/61 – Australia vs West Indies
Australia win five-match series 2-1

The first tied Test. The first tied Test.
A contest between two sides led by two captains – Richie Benaud and Frank Worrell – who were staunch advocates of playing aggressive and attacking cricket. And the series lived up to the billing.

The tone was set early, as the opening Test ended in the first-ever tie in the history of the game. Chasing a target of 233, Australia required six runs off the final over with three wickets in hand. The man tasked with stopping this feat for the Windies – Wes Hall. The Windies managed to dismiss three batsmen in the final over, but not before the Australians had dramatically levelled up the score.

There would be comfortable victories for Australia and West Indies in Melbourne and Sydney respectively followed by a draw in Adelaide, setting things up perfectly for the decider at the MCG. The finale was a riveting contest, as the hosts had to fight tooth and nail to seal a narrow two-wicket victory while chasing down a score of 258.

Despite losing the series, the West Indian outfit won the hearts and the respect of the Australian public, and were paraded through Melbourne in open-top cars and cheered on by the large crowds that had gathered on the streets before departing back home.

1999 – India vs Pakistan
1-1 across two Tests

An enthralling contest was expected between the two arch-rivals during their clash in 1999, and the series well and truly delivered its fair share of drama.

Sachin Tendulkar’s memorable knock of 136 was in vain as India fell short by a mere 12 runs in the opening Test match in Chennai while chasing down a target of 271. The close encounter was a treat for the fans witnessing it as it pitted Sachin’s mastery against the skills and wizardry of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq. The Pakistanis pulled off an incredible comeback to win the Test, with India collapsing from 254/6 to 258 all out following the dismissal of Tendulkar.

The second Test in Delhi would turn out to be another unforgettable encounter, with Anil Kumble etching his name in the history books. With Pakistan chasing down a total of 420, Kumble would scalp all 10 Pakistan wickets as he bowled them out for 207. He would become only the second bowler in history after Jim Laker to accomplish this feat.

Pakistan went on to win a third Test between the two teams a fortnight later, but that match was a part of the Asian Championship.

I remember all 4* of these series, although the cricket played during the England-Sri Lanka series in 2014 wasn't quite as high quality as in the rest. However, it's probably there due to the dramatic nature of the climax.

The other three will certainly remain iconic for as long as test cricket is played around the world.

*The Australia-West Indies series in 60/61 more so out of folklore.

Some on top of my head :-

Australia Vs India 2020/21
England Vs Australia 2019
Australia Vs South Africa 2008
England Vs Australia 2005
Australia Vs India 2003
India Vs Australia 2001
India Vs Pakistan 1998/99
Windies Vs Australia 1998/99
Australia Vs Windies 1994/95
Windies Vs Pakistan 1987/88

That would be my top 10 in reverse chronological timeline.

Best Test Series in no particular order :
1. Ashes 2005
2. Border Gavaskar Trophy 2001
3. India vs Pakistan 1999
4. Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020/21
5. England vs Sri Lanka 2014
6. Ashes 2019
7. West Indies vs Australia 1999
8. West Indies vs Pakistan 1988
9. India vs South Africa 2010
10. Border Gavaskar Trophy 2017

These are some that stand out for me, not saying they are the greatest in history. These are series I enjoyed and have memories of.

India vs Pakistan 2005
India vs Australia 2017
Australia vs India 2020/2021
South Africa vs Australia 2018
England vs Pakistan 2016
England vs Pakistan 2012
England vs Australia 2005
England vs Australia 2019
West Indies vs Pakistan 2017

India vs Pakistan 2005 is criminally underrated. Pakistan had no right drawing that series with such a weak bowling attack, but it was the first signs that Bob Woolmer was introducing some grit and fight into a mercurial and flaky team.

The Mohali escape was followed by a demoralising Kolkata hammering, so levelling the series in Bangalore in Inzy's 100th Test was magical. Younis Khan came of age in that series.

However no list is complete without West Indies vs Australia in 1999. Brian Lara was under huge pressure after the 5-0 hammering in South Africa the previous series. The very first Test - WI are bowled out for 51 and lose heavily so the pressure ratchets up even more on Lara.

Cue some of the greatest individual knocks in Test history - a double hundred in Jamaica to level the series, the ATG Test innings in Barbados IMO to go 2-1 up before a belligerent hundred in Antigua in a losing cause.

It had everything you wanted in a Test series - great players going head to head in a frenzied atmosphere, tension and narratives. Unfortunately it was the last time these two teams would enjoy a competitive series as Australia decisively tilted the scales their way afterwards.

Some memorable series I have seen and I remember (might not be in order)

1. India vs Australia 2001 in India (Nothing beats this)
2. Australia vs India 2020/21 in Australia (Gabba test will be greatest test match of all time)
3. Australia vs India 2003/04 in Australia (1-1 draw when India was written off completely)
4. India vs Australia 2013 in India (Beating Australia 4-0 in a 4 test series is memorable considering Australia had been beating teams 3-0, 4-0 regularly in last 15 years before that)
5. Ashes 2005 in England
6. India vs Pakistan 1999 in India
7. England vs Sri Lanka 2014 in England
8. West Indies vs Australia 1999 in West Indies
9. Bangladesh vs England 2016 in Bangladesh (Both tests were thrilling and also it involved Bangladesh's 1st win over a top 7 team)

I love test cricket and I've watched a lot of test series but honestly the Border Gavaskar series 2020/21 is the best series I've ever watched, and probably the best series I will ever watch in my life time, just for the sheer implausibility of the events over the entire span of the series. It was not just one test that was memorable but starting from the 36 all out in Adelaide to the Melbourne fight back to the improbable Sydney rear guard and the final incredible heist at the Gabba. It is very rare that you see so many out of the box events happening in the course of a single series.

A bunch of rookie cricketers hastily assembled to form a makeshift test side had no right to demolish Australia's 3 decade old record at the Gabba. That happening was as implausible as Aguero scoring an injury time goal in the last minute in the last match of the season to secure the Premier League for Manchester city after a 44 year wait, when they were losing 0-1 at the start of stoppage time. Yet that happened and that match is etched in the memory of football fans all over the world. And so did the Gabba heist, and when you add that to the Sydney rearguard and boxing day test bounce back after 36 all out, I doubt I'll ever watch a more eventful and dramatic test series once again. And I say this as someone who watched the 2001 series.

From an Australian perspective:
1. 2005 Ashes
2. 1961 Frank
3. Border-Gavaskar 2001
4. 1992/3 Frank
5. Border Gavaskar 2021 - slightly lower quality cricket overall than the 2001 edition

a clear top 5

Then some combination of
1997 series vs SA in SA --> underrated gem this one was
1999 in WI
2019 Ashes
2017 B-G
1976 vs WI

hmm 5 losses, 3 wins and 2 draws

My favorite test series involving India since 1996 :-

1. Australia in India - 2001
2. India in Australia 2021
3. India in England 2002
4. India in Australia 2003
5. India in West Indies 2002

All victories or moral victories of course :yk
