Ice-cold Neeraj Chopra turns Olympic legend with India's first athletics gold

Lausanne Diamond League 2022 :

Neeraj Chopra finished first at the Lausanne Diamond League after registering a best throw of 89.08m throw. He couldn't better his throw in the second attempt, registering a distance of 85.18m. The Olympic gold medallist skipped his 3rd and 5th attempts, before registering throws of 80.04 in his final attempt. Notably, Neeraj had made a foul throw in his 4th attempt.

He had earlier pulled out of the Commonwealth Games due to a groin injury. This would be the second time this year that Neeraj would be featuring in a Diamond League event. In the Stockholm Diamond League, Neeraj had thrown a personal best of 89.94m but this was not enough as he finished at the second spot, behind Anderson Peters of Grenada who had registered a throw of 90.31m.

The Lausanne Diamong League will be the last chance for all men's javelin throwers to qualify for the final slated to be played on September 7-8 in Zurich, Switzerland. As things stand right now, Neeraj is at the fourth spot in the Diamond League points table with seven points. It is important to note that only the top six with most points at the end of Diamond League qualify for the final.

Usain Bolt has failed to top the list of the most written about athletes for the first time in years in a sign that track and field is emerging from the hold the retired Jamaican sprint legend had over the sport.

World Athletics said that in 2022, Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra displaced the charismatic Bolt, who is still the world record holder in the 100m and 200m despite retiring in 2017.

Chopra had a terrific year, finishing runner-up in the world championships in Eugene, Oregon -- only the second Indian to win a global medal after Anju Bobby George's bronze in the women's long jump in 2003 -- and became the first athlete from his country to win the Diamond League final in the javelin.

That followed up his Olympic gold medal in Tokyo last year.

Chopra leads the way with 812 articles ahead of a troika of Jamaican women sprint stars, Elaine Thompson-Herah, with 751 articles, world 100m champion Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce (698) and world 200m champion Shericka Jackson (679), with Bolt still featuring in 574 articles.

World Athletics quoted figures from media analysis company Unicepta.

The federation's president Sebastian Coe said 2022 "looks and feels very different to me".

"It is an interesting one. For the first time this year Usain Bolt has not led the list of the most written about athletes of the year," Coe said in a briefing with international news agencies.

He said the discussion had moved on from 2021 and talk of Caster Semenya and Christine Mboma, two athletes who have had to change events because they have elevated testosterone levels.

"The year before it was pretty self-evident why some of those athletes were on the list: Caster Semenya, Christine Mboma," he said.

"This year looks and feels very different to me."

Coe said Bolt, the winner of the sprint double for three Olympics in a row, still played a valuable role promoting the sport but his time was curtailed by a host of sponsorship and publicity deals he has netted since retiring from the track.

"He did a lot of work around Tokyo (the Olympics last year) and he has been there and thereabouts for Diamond League events," said Coe.

"We recognise any time Usain Bolt can give to the sport but he does have a pretty full dance card.

"I know the guys who work alongside him and he is pretty busy commercially, and contracted across extensive areas.

"The more time with Usain the better but there are constraints across that."

- 'Resilience and fortitude' -

Coe said the increased exposure for other athletes was due reward for a "really challenging year" and one "we did not plan for," as the world championships had been moved a year later to accommodate the pandemic-delayed Olympics.

"We should not also forget the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships and they also competed in a full Diamond League season plus a lot of Continental Tour events and national selections," he said.

"For me it is a fabulous example of resilience and fortitude and simple determination to stay at the top of their game and they have done that.

"It is primarily through their efforts that athletics has really started to grow again in popularity and gained more broadcast hours."

Coe -- who said he was looking forward to the world championships in Budapest in 2023, which is the 40th anniversary of the inaugural event held in Helsinki -- said it had been a year to treasure given the disruption caused by Covid in the two years previously.

"I am very, very proud of what we have achieved to set aside the 2020-2021 travails," said the two-time Olympic champion.

"To be able to get as much off the starting blocks was a real testimony that we bounced back stronger than many other sports."

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 with a 88.77 metre throw, which was his season's best, in his first attempt during the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.

He also qualified for the final of the World Athletics Championship, which will be held on Sunday, after topping Group A in the qualification round.

A World Athletics Championships gold medal is no more a dream for India's javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. The star athlete fouled in his first attempt in the final at Budapest, Hungary on Sunday night, but made a solid comeback and threw the javelin to a distance of 88.17m in his second attempt. It eventually helped Neeraj secure the top honour in the final as the second-best was 87.82m from his Pakistan opponent Arshad Nadeem. The latter won the silver medal at the event, while Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic ended the tournament with a bronze, thanks to his throw of 86.67m.

Neeraj Chopra's father was happy with the fact that two of the top three spots belonged to the Asian players.

"I was confident, he was confident too," Neeraj's father told India Today after his son became the first Indian player to claim a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships.

The proud father also talked about the bond Neeraj and Arshad share with each other.

"Both of them (Neeraj and Arshad) came up with a superb effort. If you look at it, all the javelin throwers share a very good rapport. They don't think about their nationalities, they support each other. They always look to improve their performances," he said

"Even in the past, both of them (Arshad and Neeraj), this is a very proud moment for Asia," he added.

Arshad had earlier insisted that he has no rivalry with India's star javelin thrower Neeraj. He said there is always scope for learning from top athletes like the Indian. Both Chopra and Nadeem have qualified for next year's Paris Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra said "I felt good that Arshad Nadeem threw well. We spoke and discussed how both our countries are growing now. Earlier there were European athletes but now we have reached their level. There is no Pakistan-India rivalry in a bad way." (Indian Express)

I was just quietly watching the silence from my Indian brothers here. Not one of them posted this amazing news but were quick to flock to the Chandrayaan thread.

Any idea why?

Chopra has stood with the farmers, the wrestlers and generally has displayed a basic human moral conscience. Something these pathetic bhakts don't dare to acknowledge as existing in them.

:poop:

“How big of an achievement it was for Neeraj to defeat the Pakistani?” the reporter asked, to which she replied: “There is no division of countries on the field all players are equal.”

“In the field, everyone is an athlete, and someone has to win; it doesn’t matter if they are from Pakistan or from Haryana,” Neeraj Chopra’s mother said.

She further said: “It is a matter [Neeraj’s victory] of joy for me and I am happy for the Pakistani athlete as well.”

Sir..Rahul Gandhi is not back as PM..it is a fact though all magazine before elections say "He has finally come of age"..I have no desire to live in India under a central government when I will not feel safe to even travel in a bus thinking some bomb might explode

Quite interesting
People do not follow athletic events much in India. Some may follow it. But most don't know who Neeraj Chopra is. Even in my case, I read about it and thought "Ohh Nice!". That's where it ended from me.

Regarding Farmers protest, it is a great disservice to all future farmers of India. Middle men will continue to loot the poor farmer.

Seems like a nice guy who respects his competitors.

He's spoken very highly about Arshad Nadeem and the rivalry seems to be a friendly one.

A lot of respect for this guy.

Neeraj Chopra secured the second position in the men's javelin throw event with the best throw of 85.71 m at Zurich Diamond League.

Neeraj Chopra completed a brilliant recovery to finish second at the Zurich Diamond League men's javelin throw event on Friday. The reigning world champion started with a 80.79m throw before two false throws in his next two attempts put him in fifth position. However, in his fourth attempt, Neeraj came back strong with a 85.22m throw. Another false throw followed but with a 85.77m throw in his sixth and final attempt, he came agonisingly close to grabbing the top spot but he ended up narrowly missing out.

Until and unless brown parents in South Asia start taking their kids to various sporting events and actually getting them enrolled in various sports/athletics and actively supporting and cheering their kids participating in those sports, this mindset and non-existence of various sports in the region is not going to change. Majority of parents still have a problem with their kids playing the only sport that brown people know of "cricket" so forget about it changing for other sports anytime soon.

Saw highlights of Neeraj, seems like a nice guy with excellent javelin skills. Should motivate young ones to take on such games in India

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra wins gold in Federation Cup with 82.27m effort in his first domestic event in three years.

2 months to go for Olympics, Neeraj Chopra faces a scare — after fatigue of back-to-back events in Doha and Bhubaneshwar

Exactly two months before the Paris Olympics, India’s biggest medal hope Neeraj Chopra has pulled out of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event at Ostrava in the Czech Republic because of adductor muscle stiffness. The health scare comes towards the end of a hectic month where the Tokyo Olympics javelin gold medalist had participated in two competitions — Doha Diamond League and Bhubaneswar Federation Cup — that were just four days apart.

Neeraj in a statement on social media said that he “felt something” in his adductor after a recent throwing session and wasn’t taking the risk of competing because of his past problems with the muscle. “…I am not injured but I don’t want to take any risk during the Olympic year so I had to take this decision. Once I feel it’s fully recovered, I will get back to competitions,” he said.

Manisha Malhotra, the head of Sports Excellence and Scouting at JSW Sports, the firm that manages Chopra, mentioned “back-to-back competitions” as a reason for the pull out. “Neeraj has pulled out because of adductor tightness and the fatigue of competing in back-to-back events in Doha and Bhubaneshwar. The day after the Federation Cup in Bhubaneshwar he travelled back to Poland, where he has been training. Neeraj skipping the meet is a precautionary step. He is scheduled to participate in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku next month,” Malhotra told The Indian Express.

Can’t wait for another chapter of the Neeraj Chopra and Nadeem bhai rivalry.

Neeraj Chopra's Coach Gives Big Update On Athlete's Injury Ahead Of Paris Olympics

The adductor niggle that has troubled Neeraj Chopra in the past couple of months "is fine" now and the reigning Olympic champion has entered the high intensity phase of his Paris preparations, his German coach Klaus Bartonietz told PTI, dismissing concerns surrounding the Indian star's fitness. The 26-year-old Chopra, who scripted history by winning the javelin throw gold at the Tokyo Olympics, is once again the country's best bet for a top podium finish in the Paris Games beginning on July 26.

But his season has been far from perfect in terms of fitness. Bartonietz, however, insisted that things are back on track.

"Everything is according to plan. At the moment, no issue with that (adductor niggle), it's fine, it looks good, hoping to remain like that till the Olympics," the coach, who has been with Chopra for close to five years, told PTI in an exclusive interview from Antalya, Turkiye where they are currently based for training.

"It's just over two weeks left in the Olympics, so the intensity of training is high. He is having full throwing sessions." Chopra withdrew from Ostrava Golden Spike on May 28 as a precautionary measure after he felt "something" in his adductor (group of muscles located on inner thighs). He made a strong comeback by winning gold at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on June 18 with a throw of 85.97m.

He opted out of the Paris Diamond League on July 7, insisting that the event was never a part of his competition calendar this year.

Chopra's competition day is just two weeks away with the qualification round scheduled on August 6.

Asked about the training routine of Chopra, Bartonietz said, "We have sessions of sprinting, jumping or throwing or weightlifting alternately for activation in the morning. Two sessions, one in morning and one in evening, two to two-and-a-half-hour long each.

Bartonietz said the approach is nearly the same as the one adopted before the Tokyo Olympics.

Chopra has maintained that he is focusing more on training than competitions this time. He is working on strengthening his blocking leg to mitigate pressure on his groin.

"Yes. Generally, javelin throw is all about it (having fast runway and blocking well). It's very hard to throw far with a poor runway. More the energy you bring with that, the better it is," said the German bio-mechanics expert.

"Three events before Olympics not disadvantage"

Chopra competed in five events before Tokyo but in only three ahead of the Paris Games. His coach does not see anything wrong in cutting down competitions.

"You can compete in many events or not, it's tough to say what is enough (number of events). It depends on the situation. Jan Zelezny (Czech legend and world record holder) says he does not compete in too many events (just two before 1992 Olympics where he won gold).

"Competitions sometimes disrupt preparation and you start all over again. Competing in high class events can become risky also. Travelling too much with logistics, with javelins around the world, is also not good.

"So, it's fine, he has prepared and trained well." Asked about Chopra opting out of the Paris Diamond League on July 7, Bartonietz said, "There were some minor issues, not worth risking by going there.

"The venue (of Paris Diamond League) was also not the Olympic stadium (where Chopra will compete on August 6 and 8) anyway, so we decided not to take chances."

Not safe to predict medal

None of the top javelin throwers have performed exceptionally well this season and Bartonietz suggested that the competition could be wide open in the Olympics. As usual, he would not even predict Chopra's chances.

"Olympics is a high-stakes and high-pressure situation and anything can happen. Guessing a medal on the basis of statistics is difficult.

"All the top throwers are training their best, they want to give their best in Paris and win a medal. Just like them, we can also claim that Neeraj can win. These claims (of medal chances) can be biased and can bungle up also," he pointed out.

German teenager Mex Dehning is the only one to have thrown more than 90m this year, and Bartonietz said it all boils down to momentum.

"An 88m throw may not be enough in the Olympics for a medal but it can happen with an 85m also, you never know. It is like a game of poker and on some days you can throw far if you have momentum." Apart from Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch (silver medal winner in Tokyo Olympics), Julian Weber of Germany and two-time former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, Bartonietz also picked Oliver Helander of Finland as a medal contender.

The Olympic Stadium in Paris will have purple-coloured Mondo tracks, which experts believe give faster timings in races.

He has 2 Olympic individual medals. What are you on about?

Neeraj Chopra has raised the bar so high that a silver medal, India’s best of Paris 2024, feels like a disappointment.

What a champion

Lol he got a gold last time and 4 years later got Silver what kind of post is this? How can you call that falling short?

Man's a humble and respectful dude too.

Are you for real. Guy won silver medal in olympic and won previous gold medal in olympic.

So proud of Neeraj, gold and silver in 2 back to back Olympics. Goat of the game. Won pretty much every other medal out there too.

What a sore lose you're .

He already won the gold.

Ek gold kya jite ki hawa m udne lag gye .saram karo .

Neeraj made the choice of not going for surgery on his injury and focussed on reducing events to manage it.

Nadeem underwent surgery. Focussed on competition.

What logic is that? Neeraj has consistently scored a top medal in every contest including here where he won a silver.

If Nadeem has won a gold medal eating Nihari and Biryani and training in a cave and still won a medal, it’s credit to him and it’s your establishment fault for not taking care of him.

Every other athlete competing here has got more or less similar facilities to Neeraj.

I generally mock my fellow Indians who wake up every 4 years, but comments by Pakistani posters here are taking the cake . 90% of you guys didn't even know the sequence and rules of Javelin. Have a little class in victory, don't demean what Arshad has achieve.
"Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan"

Neeraj Chopra himself will feel like he bottled it today against Arshad Nadeem on the big stage. No matter how much accolades he gets for the Silver, deep down he knew he failed big time today.

Modern day Nicki Lauda vs Hunt rivalry.

Once is enough for Arshad. And we'll take the olympics record with that too, thanks.

I admire Neeraj for his consistency though. The 89+m throw was a potentially gold medal one.

Neeraj is a good athlete, Arshad always had the greater potential but have seen this one trend whoever strikes first seals the deal

Not an expert but just a casual watcher here, I thought he could not get his rhythm right (somehow kept on making fouls).

I wanted him to cross the 90-meter barrier for the first time (alas, not to be).

Still, a mighty fine athlete to represent our country on the world stage.

Congrats to fellow Indian PPers for yet another podium finish from our player! :thumbsup

Most Pakistanis despite not knowing the intricacies of javelin respect Chopra.

Just because Chopra is backed more by Indian government than Nadeem was by Pakistan isn't some source of pride. It should be a source of shame not something to cheat thump about.

We are proud of your guy too. He broke the glass ceiling first.

Lol he looked so angry and wanted to throw 95 plus metres after arshad's record throw.

He was crying from inside and was chanting india india before one of his throw. Hahahah

True, There has been genuine respect in this rivalry. That's what I am saying a healthy and actually world beating champs representing South Asia. Let's maintain that :)
Nadeem is a beast, the actual natural talent (I hate this term though), Pakistan admin has truly nurtured and handled his injuries over the last 3 years and Pakistan admin needs to be appreciated for that.

Can’t bottle it if someone just broke an Olympic record, unless you were expecting Neeraj Chopra to spear him before he threw the javelin lol

This ain't no bottling man. It is genius of Arshad today. When you see such an excellence, you just appreciate.

In my college athletics meet up it was so hard to reach even 50 meter and here we are with an athlete reaching 90+ twice. Everything has to be perfect to reach such a distance. Celebrate the excellence!

Exactly, cricket always brings out toxicity in apnas, all sides included. Neeraj is respected by many Pakistanis regardless of what some say because he did it first. Arshad was always in Neeraj’s shadow. Today i felt Arshad’s emotions, the really resonated. you can tell he was really overwhelmed. The sajda and dua at the end, apologies if it sounds cliche but it really was a heavy and heartfelt moment for him and for Pakistanis. You need to understand what Arshad has accomplished and what he had at his disposal, compared to others and not to take away what others included Neeraj have accomplished. This is Pakistans Tendulkar moment i hope. For now though, its brings some happiness for Pakistanis in the midst of what’s happening back home.
Ya Allah! thera lak lak Shukr, Ameen.

Probably the most logical post I have heard on this debate.

Pathetic stuff from Indian Journalist. Bhai there is a Gold Medalist and a Bronze medalist sitting there, ask them questions. ALl the questions were being asked by Neeraj, and were just repeated same questions.

The Grenada athelete just sat there, not a single question was asked from him. Meanwhile I think even Arshad turned back to the journalist wondering whats the point of this press conference and than he was also asked a question.

Stupid stuff.

Neeraj is a champion athlete but Nadeem did the unthinkable to over power this guy. Congrats to Neeraj for his silver but My Man, Arshad stole the show.

I watched some of his interviews and this guy is still crying and said he has beat arshad in so competitions and he is not accepting the reality. LOL.

He was very emotional and was crying when arshad made that throw.

He should accept that arshad is better than him and I don't think he is ever gonna cross 90 metres mark and certainly won't throw as as far as 93.

India vs Pakistan rivalry in javelin can eclipse cricket: Neeraj Chopra

The bromance and the fierce rivalry between Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem was for the whole world to see. They strike a perfect balance between being there and supporting each other and giving a tough competition on the track. The men's javelin throw final on August 8, Thursday witnessed a new chapter unfolding with Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra securing podium finish at the Paris Olympics 2024. Neeraj agreed that the India vs Pakistan rivalry in javelin can eclipse the cricket rivalry between the two nations.

The broadcaster asked Neeraj if he felt that the no. 1 rivalry between India and Pakistan would be witnessed in javelin because of these two over cricket. To which Neeraj replied: "Yes, this is possible if javelin tournaments happen more often, like cricket. The Olympics come in 4 years and the world championship in 2 years. So we have very less competitions in javelin. If we play more competitions, then people will watch us more, just like in the Diamond League. If we play those competitions together, then people will follow more."

The fans from both nations eagerly await the clash between India and Pakistan as the two teams face each other only in ICC tournaments or Asia Cups. The countries being cricket-obsessed have always hyped the rivalry between the two teams. However, the buzz and hype around the rivalry has lowered because of many one-sided contests with India dominating their neighbouring country at the cricket field.

Arshad Nadeem vs Neeraj Chopra: Head-to-head

However, in the javelin final, Arshad Nadeem's Olympic-record breaking throw of 92.97m was crucial in changing the country's fate in the mega-sporting event. Arshad ended Pakistan's 32-year-old wait for an Olympic medal as he became the country's first athlete to win a gold medal. He dethroned Neeraj Chopra to become the Olympic champion as India's star ended with a silver medal. Overall, Neeraj has a better head-to-head record than Arshad with 9-1. But Arshad has the best personal throw of 92.97 in comparison to Neeraj's throw of 89.94.

Despite being fierce competitors, Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem's camaraderie off the field also exemplifies the true Olympic sporting spirit.

The question you should be asking is - where were the pakistani journalists ?

Yeah Indian journalists will always report news from an India centric view, they have to cater to their domestic audience. Europeans dont care that much about individual events because they have so many medal winners.

It's Pakistani media orgs responsibility to get their journos to the olympics and ask questions from the athletes.

I agree with this too, pakistan journalist are idiots and couldnt show up or ask questions.

But at the same time, indian journalist were bit pathetic. Like there is a gold winner sitting, chalo if u dont wana ask him, maybe ask the bronze medalist some questions.

Both countries have despicable journalists

Dont say europeans dont care.
The english media was soooo much interested to know what these guys were saying.

Problem was theyvknew if they asked a question in english, arshad was not gonna understand as the wannabe translator was doing a poor job.

India’s Javelin Throw Star Neeraj Chopra confirmed his participation in the Lausanne Diamond League after winning a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. Notably, Chopra reportedly flew to Germany after the Olympics to consult a doctor over his long-standing groin injury.

The 26-year-old has been struggling with Hernia which has been causing pain in his groin over the last 12 months. He’s currently training in Magglingen, Switzerland, with his coach Klaus Bartonietz and physio Ishaan Marwaha.

Recently, Chopra gave an update on his fitness and said that fortunately he didn’t have much difficulty with the injury in Paris. He also confirmed his participation in the Lusanne Diamond League which is set to begin from August 22.

“I have finally decided to participate in the Lausanne Diamond League, which begins August 22. Luckily, the Paris Olympics went well, and I didn’t have much difficulty with my injury. So I thought of completing the season and taking the doctor’s advice regarding treatment afterwards. At the end of September, I’ll be back in India after the season ends. I will meet the doctor for my groin issues,” Neeraj was quoted as saying by ANI.

Further speaking ahead, Chopra said that his focus these days is a lot on his injuries and hence he isn’t able to give his 100%.

“I have a lot on my mind. When I am throwing, 60-70 per cent focus of my is on the injury. I don’t want to get injured. Whenever I go for a throw, you will see that my speed is low. I am pushing myself,” he added.

Neeraj Chopra reveals he competed in Diamond League Final with broken hand

Indian javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra has revealed that he competed in the Diamond League Final with a broken hand where he finished as runner-up for the second consecutive year. In his latest post on X (formerly Twitter), Chopra shared his struggles from the final in Brussels where he finished second with an 87.86m throw, only behind Grenada's Anderson Peters. Neeraj had fallen short by just one centimetre behind Peters, who's winning throw was 87.87m. Peters, a two-time world champion, set the winning mark with his opening throw. Julian Weber of Germany secured third place with a throw of 85.97m.

Neeraj took to social media and shared the X-ray image of his left hand which showed a fracture on his ring finger. Neeraj had looked concerned after completing most of his throws in the final and seemed to be not pushing himself too hard. The Paris Olympic silver medallist explained that despite his injury, he was determined to compete in the season's last competition. Though he couldn't meet his personal expectations, he felt the experience had taught him valuable lessons.

"As the 2024 season ends, I look back on everything I’ve learned through the year—about improvement, setbacks, mentality, and more. On Monday, I injured myself in practice, and X-rays showed that I had fractured the fourth metacarpal in my left hand. It was another painful challenge for me. But with the help of my team, I was able to participate in Brussels," Chopra wrote.

"This was the last competition of the year, and I wanted to end my season on the track. While I couldn’t meet my own expectations, I feel this was a season in which I learned a lot. I am now determined to return, fully fit and ready to go. I want to thank all of you for your encouragement. 2024 has made me a better athlete and person. See you in 2025," he added.

Neeraj Chopra finished second in the Diamond League Final on Saturday, September 14, behind Grenadian javelin thrower Anderson Peters. Competing at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Neeraj's best attempt of 87.86 meters was just one centimetre short of Peters’ winning throw of 87.87 meters.

Chopra started the competition strong, launching his first throw at 86.82 meters, placing him behind Peters. The competition intensified as Peters hit 87.87 meters in his first attempt. Neeraj, trailing by just over one meter, was unable to improve on his second attempt, managing 83.49 meters. However, he bounced back with a massive throw of 87.86 meters on his third attempt, narrowly missing the top spot by a centimetre.

This marks the second year in a row that Neeraj Chopra has finished as runner-up in the prestigious Diamond League Final. In 2023, the Indian javelin star fell short of defending his Diamond Trophy, losing to Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch. In that event, Neeraj threw 83.80 meters, while Vadlejch secured the title with a throw of 84.24 meters.

While Chopra had won the Diamond League title in 2022, this year's runner-up finish added to a remarkable season where he also clinched a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. Despite the injury and challenges, Chopra concluded his season on a high and expressed his determination to return stronger next year.

Neeraj Chopra Set To Part Ways With Coach Klaus Bartonietz

The 26-year-old Neeraj Chopra has been working with Bartonietz, who is a biomechanics expert but doubled up as Chopras coach, since 2019.

The hugely successful partnership between star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and his long-time coach Klaus Bartonietz of Germany is set to end after five years of working together. The 75-year-old Bartonietz has cited his age and family commitments to part ways with Chopra. "He (Bartonietz) is 75 and he now wants to be with his family and does not want too much travel also," an official of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) told PTI.

"It is not that Neeraj wants to end the association, it is Bartonietz who has expressed his inability to continue as his (Neeraj's) coach," he added.

The 26-year-old Chopra has been working with Bartonietz, who is a biomechanics expert but doubled up as Chopra's coach, since 2019.

The German first came on board as a biomechanical expert and took over as Chopra's coach after Uwe Hohn fell out with the AFI and the Sports Authority of India.

Under Bartonietz, Chopra won Tokyo Olympics gold, Paris Games silver, became world champion and Diamond League champion, besides becoming Asian Games gold medallist.

Neeraj Chopra gets married in dreamy ceremony, shares first photos: Bound by love

Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra tied the knot with his partner, Himani, in a dreamy private ceremony. The javelin superstar shared photos from the wedding on social media on Sunday, January 19.

"Started new chapter of life with my family," Neeraj wrote in his social media post.

"Grateful for every blessing that brought us to this moment together. Bound by love, happily ever after," he added.

Neeraj had kept the details about his wedding under wraps as the first photos from his marriage took his fans on social media by surprise. Neeraj shared a heatwarming photo of his mother blessing him from at the ceremony.

Wishes started pouring in after Neeraj made the news about his marriage public. Olympic medal-winning boxer Vijender Singh and actor Gajraj Rao were among the first ones to congratulate the former Olympic champion on his wedding.

Neeraj Chopra hopes eponymous event will bring Diamond League to India
Neeraj Chopra will tick off an item in his bucket list with an eponymous javelin competition in Bengaluru next month but the poster boy of Indian athletics has also added a new one to it — watching a Diamond League event in the country.

The Neeraj Chopra Classic on May 24 will be a World Athletics Gold category event featuring former world champions Anderson Peters and Julius Yego, 2016 Olympic winner Thomas Roehler and American Curtis Thompson among others.

Chopra, who won the gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but settled for silver behind Arshad Nadeem in Paris last year, could not confirm the participation of his Pakistani frenemy though.

“He is consulting his coach but has not confirmed his participation yet,” Chopra told a virtual press conference on Monday.

“Like other top throwers, Arshad has also been invited. It will involve government (permission). Once everything is confirmed, we will know the final list.”

India and Pakistan have suspended bilateral cricket over their soured political relations, though the bitter neighbours continue to engage in Olympic sports.

Chopra is the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win an Olympic gold, world championship and the Diamond League and has single-handedly raised the profile of Olympic sports in an otherwise cricket-mad country.

Having an event bearing his name, like pole vaulter Armand Duplantis has one in Sweden, is another dream Chopra wanted to fulfil.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to see India host a world-class athletic event. To have such an event, that too named after me, feels surreal,” the 27-year-old said.

“This is going to be an annual event, and we're going to expand it to include more disciplines.

“People will get to see top throwers competing right in front of their eyes. It would be a major boost for local talent, who will get to perform against the best athletes.

“Our next effort should be to bring a Diamond League event to India. It is not impossible.

“We have the stadiums, and World Athletics is aware of the growing popularity of these events in India. They also want more crowd-following athletics.”

'We were never really close friends or...': Neeraj Chopra on his equation with Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem

India's two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra on May 15 said that he is not close friends with Pakistan's javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem. Neeraj said that he reciprocates the respect he gets from fellow athletes but his relationship won't be the same with Nadeem following the military conflict between India and Pakistan following the dastardly terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam.

India's star javelin thrower was recently subjected to online abuse as he had invited Pakistan's Nadeem to NC Classic in Bengaluru which was postponed due to the escalation on the India-Pakistan border.

"First I would like to clarify that I don't have very strong relationship (with Nadeem), we were never really close friends or something. But, because of this (tensions on the Indo-Pak border), it will not be like before. But if someone talks to me respectfully I reciprocate the respect," Chopra told reporters during a press conference on the eve of Diamond League event in Doha.

"Yes, as an athlete we have to talk, I have some good friends from the athlete community from all round the world, not only in javelin throw, but also other events. If somebody talks to me respectfully, I will also talk to him with full respect.

"Javelin is a very small community and everyone is competing for their country and everyone wants to give their best."

Earlier this month, Chopra had to clarify that the invitation for NC Classic were sent a day before the Pahalgam terror attack. He lashed out at social media trolls who targetted her mother Saroj for her statement about Nadeem after Paris Olympics where Nadeem won the gold medal.

The 27-year-old has been conferred with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. The Ministry of Defence's Department of Military Affairs issued a notification on May 13 about Neeraj's promotion.

Neeraj's performance in Diamond League 2024 final

Last year, Neeraj finished second in the Diamond League final. He fell short of the trophy by just one centimetre. Chopra's third javelin throw was 87.86 metre, agonisingly short of Granada's Anderson Peters who registered a 87.87 metre throw in his first attempt.
