What's new

"If a team of the best players from IPL faced one from PSL, the PSL side would win" : Abdul Razzaq

So just because something happened in the past, it means that IPL teams are still unbeatable. Ok if you say so.

It would be nice if it happens but let’s talk facts. BCCI will not be interested in this. Even if they are, they will make sure PSL teams are not competing. It is definitely possible for PSL teams or for that matter any BBL, BPL, or whatever teams to win against any IPL side, isn’t that what sport is all about?

It will be extremely one sided affair with IPL teams wiping the floor with rest of the teams and some flukes and upsets here and there. If I am not wrong exactly same happened in the last few additions of the clt20 where IPL teams competed with each other for the trophy while the other teams were severely outclassed and outmatched.

I agree with this. It would be dull and very one sided. IPL doesn't need to prove its superiority to anyone really.

Lol! So champions league in football is there because ManU, Barca, Liverpool, Real Madrid etc need to prove their superiority to someone.

Its a freaking sport and just because there is an assumption that one team is better and that doesnt need to prove its superiority to anyone is no reason for a sport or any proposed event should to be shelved.

It happens or not is another matter but what you are saying literally means that all the events or sports with one team being superior makes it dull and boring. If that would have been the case cricket, football and even individual sports like tennis should have been finished as there were many times when one team or an individual was far superior and that too for a number of years.

Cricket is different from football. Most of the foreign players would stick to their IPL teams.

Thats a different premise altogether. Yes some players would be common in certain teams and that is something that will require a mechanism as I mentioned in previous champions league related discussions and threads as well but that is a different discussion.

Never said they were/are unbeatables and upsets are parts and parcel of the game. Sometimes you can just tell the obvious by the general look and feel of things without microanalysing every bit. If there were a 4 nation tourney consisting of Ind, Eng, Pak and SL, you know who the finalists would be 8 out of 10 times without indulging in permutations and combinations. IPL is even more developed now and teams are more organized than ever, not even talking about how far ahead they are in terms of strength, class and talent compared to teams from other leagues, I honestly think another t20 tourney where a couple teams are vastly superior than the rest is not really a good idea. If people want to see CSK and MI fighting it out they can watch the tried and tested IPL, what is the point forcing another tournament upon them that doesn't offer anything new? Not sure what's more embarrassing :

Razzaq's comments or some posters saying "yeah he's got a point".

Razzler knows how to stay in news.

I think it was this bullish attitude of his that helped him being a top cricketer for so long.

Keep it going Razzler!

As minamino mentioned, UCL (in football) and cricket's version of the Champions League is a false analogy because foreign players will stick to their highest bidder i.e. their respective IPL sides.

I'll also add the fact that in the Champions League there will be four IPL sides, where even the most inferior of those teams is levels above the next best domestic T20 side.

It's the same reason why the World Club Cup is also one sided and as a result tedious. If we take a look at the winners since 2010, it has been won by the UCL winner every year, barring 2012, when Corinthians beat Chelsea. Just like in the cricket Champions League, this is another sporting tournament that needs to be scrapped.

Stay on topic which is related to cricket.

Only one or two teams will come from IPL how will they take away all the foreign players when some of them dont even play in IPL? Also not every winning team in different T20 league will have the with same foreign players. However if there is a common player the other team can always go for his replacement just like they do in the T20 leagues itself when a player is unavailable or injured.

Its not like 8 IPL teams will be playing the tournament and grabbing every foreign player, only the winner or max runner should play.

What about the dominance of Aussie in 2000s winning 3 consecutive WCs and Roger Federer in Tennis winning grand slam after grand slam, was the era dull and boring because it was one sided and should have scrapped the tournaments?

A league where one of the top performers is a player who thinks fitness tests are a problem, cannot be anywhere near the best

IPL teams would beat PSL teams black and blue. Most Pakistan fans on here don't even watch the IPL so they have no clue.

Dont worry we are told that his fitness should be overlooked as talent is what counts.

Based on how cricket is at the moment it would be something like 4 IPL teams and 2 each from BBL and Vitality Blast.

In one breath you say an upset can happen and in the next you say it can't.

Make up your mind.

In one breath you say an upset can happen and in the next you say it can't.

Of course if a league like that takes place once a year there will be upsets once in a blue Moon but mostly it will be IPL teams dominating the rest and competing with each other for the trophy. Not sure if general fans would be excited to see that, perhaps the first few sessions then the interest will die down like what happened with CLT20.

Saj how about a yearly 4 nation t20 tourney consisting of Ind, Pak and a couple of Sena teams? Like we used to have back in the 90s? Surely will be much more exciting than the one being discussed here. Nidahas trophy was more thrilling than all seasons of CLT20 combined.

Winning XI of IPL 2019:

QDK
Rohit Sharma
Surya Yadav
Ishan Kishan
Hardik
Pollard
Krunal
Rahul Chahar
McCleneghan
Bumrah

So is it really that strong that not other team will come close and we can call it vastly superior?

I personally dont think so but maybe I am missing something which others can point out.

Is it really that weak a team to loose every match against MI team mentioned in post #104?

Lol! Looks like it was again nothing more than biased and emotional outbursts from few without actually considering the teams, stats or facts.

Reading this thread a neutral person who didnt watch an IPL team to would imagine IPL final XI was Aussies of 2000s or WI of 80s because of the way some posters from both sides of the border were hyping IPL teams. :broad

This team has the second best loi bat of our generation and arguably the best loi bowler in the world lol. The top six are enough to dacimate any attack in the world. You seriously think your PSL team with bunch of nobodies bar Watson and Bravo will defeat this team? Really man? Shehzad, Umar Akmal and mighty Sarfi? This is just sad on so many levels

Tbh this is a joke of a comment and it’s got the intended reaction it needed. People are starting to buzz for the PSL

No way is an IPL XI weaker than a PSL XI

A Match between Quetta and MI would a pretty competitive game.

Mumbai would still be the favourites, but I don’t think it is a certainty at all.

Yeah, Razzaq was talking about IPL XI vs PSL XI.

In that scenario, I would imagine IPL XI would win at least 9/10 games with one being lost to a miracle performance (it can happen in T20s).

The Mumbai vs. Quetta argument is more interesting. Mumbai would likely win but the gap wouldn't be as big.

Do people realizing comparing stats of a lower league (PSL) vs a higher league (IPL) is stupid? It like saying those footballers in Championship have more goals/assists, so are better than those in EPL.

If Razzaq was playing alone against a team of 11 players he would win such is the power of the spinach master.

lol you can't just compare stats from two different leagues like that even if you are desperate. Only perhaps Roussow is marginally better than Ishan but Ishan is a wk bat so not an even comparison and Pollard over Bravo anyday. Rest are just so far above their PSL counterparts.

Let's not hide behind stats, tell me honestly who from that PSL team do you think are better than their IPL counterparts?

I have no idea about some of the players in the MI XI such as Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Chahar, Krunal Pandya, etc. so can't really say. Overall, the MI XI looks stronger but the gap isn't massive.

OK, found a couple of best XIs to compare as well.

PSL best XI is the commentators' choice for 2019. IPL best XI is the one I found on a couple of websites, Kumble also picked the same.

lol at AB and Pollard listed in PSL XI, they are considered local boys in Bangalore and Mumbai, would show big thenga to their PSL teams in a heartbeat to play in IPL if it ever comes to that. You can keep your Ingrams and Akmals, no issues.

In the last edition of the CT (in 2014), there were three IPL sides. This could easily become four given that BCCI is one of the administrators in this tournament.

In fact, it is effectively BCCI's tournament as we all know who's calling the shots. This is another reason why I wasn't so fond of the Cricketing Champions League.

The difference between the examples you've cited in respect of other sports, those events are set-up by a neutral entity and there is no overlap in players with multiple teams i.e. they all represent one team.

Sure, but they weren't in the IPL season XI so, in theory, they'd be free to represent PSL in this hypothetical match.

I have no idea about some of the players in the MI XI such as Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Chahar, Krunal Pandya, etc. so can't really say. Overall, the MI XI looks stronger but the gap isn't massive.

Surya is a domestic veteran, very reliable middle order bat, can go big when needed. Ishan is an excellent hitter, far better than Sarfi as a wk batsman, Chahar is a better bowler than Nawaz while Krunal is the better bat. This team also has the likes of Sharma, De kok, Bumrah, Malinga and Pollard, that's like two atgs, two potential atgs and a beastly hitter down the order. No PSL teams comes even close to such monstrosity, the gap is bigger than massive.

How can you compare strike rate averages, etc. From different leagues? That's like comparing the stats from Ranji trophy to county cricket. A million things like pitches, quality of players etc come into the picture

It’s a bit of a stupid thing to say. India does not necessarily need to pick its 4 overseas players and just select a full Indian XI to beat any Pakistani XI atm. But I guess if a PSL XI consists of 4 non Pakistanis then it may break the psychological edge India has over Pakistanis.

I’ve always thought that Pakistani cricketers are mentally weak, not untalented when it comes to playing India and Australia

Like I mentioned above, those are overall T20 career stats for those players, not league specific.

While you are right but when the discussion of cricket champions league started it was being mentioned how every IPL team is vastly superior so I have put forward the winners of IPL and PSL of 2019 to show for any neutral fan it can definitely not be termed vastly superior. When cricket champions league started IPL was probably the only modern style league and no other league had 4 overseas players so obviously IPL teams were gonna get extra edge back then.

Winning XI of IPL 2019:

QDK
Rohit Sharma
Surya Yadav
Ishan Kishan
Hardik
Pollard
Krunal
Rahul Chahar
McCleneghan
Bumrah

So is it really that strong that not other team will come close and we can call it vastly superior?

I personally dont think so but maybe I am missing something which others can point out.

Winning XI of PSL 2019:

Shane Watson
Shehzad
Ahsan Ali
Riley Russouw
Umer Akmal
Sarfaraz Ahmed
DJ Bravo
Mohammad Nawaz
Sohail Tanveer
Mohammad Hasnain
Fawad Ahmed

Is it really that weak a team to loose every match against MI team mentioned in post #104?

Lol! Looks like it was again nothing more than biased and emotional outbursts from few without actually considering the teams, stats or facts.

Reading this thread a neutral person who didnt watch an IPL team to would imagine IPL final XI was Aussies of 2000s or WI of 80s because of the way some posters from both sides of the border were hyping IPL teams. :broad

Lets compare them man to man.

Openers - IPL Duo: QDK + Rohit Vs PSL Duo: Watson + Shehzad

Both IPL openers wipe the floor with the PSL openers.

QDK v Watson may seem close at first but in last year's IPL, the former beats him comprehensively as he was the third highest run scorer. He scored 529 runs at an average of 35.26 at a SR of 132.91, whereas Watson was averaging 23.41 at a SR of 127.56.

Winner: IPL openers - QDK + Rohit

IPL v PSL Number 3 Batsman: Surya Yadav v Ahsan Ali

Surya Yadav IPL 2019 - Average: 32.61 at a SR of 130.86
Ahsan Ali PSL 2019 - Average: 22.25 at a SR of 130.88

Ahsan Ali has fared worse in an inferior league, so it's obvious who comes out on top here.

Winner: IPL number 3 - Surya Yadav

IPL v PSL Number 4 Batsman: Ishan Kishan v Rilee Rossouw

Ishan Kishan IPL 2019 - Average: 16.83 at a SR of 101.00
Rilee Rossouw PSL 2019 - Average: 32.77 at a SR of 135.94

Obvious who wins here.

Winner: PSL number 4 - Rilee Rossouw

IPL v PSL Number 5 Batsman: Hardik Pandya v Umer Akmal

Hardik Pandya IPL 2019 - Average: 44.66 at a SR of 191.42 (WOW)
Umer Akmal PSL 2019 - Average: 34.62 at a SR of 137.12

Winner: IPL number 5 - Hardik Pandya

IPL v PSL Number 6 Batsman: Kieron Pollard v Sarfraz Ahmed

What a mismatch lol.

Kieron Pollard IPL 2019 - Average: 34.87 at a SR of 156.74
Sarfraz Ahmed PSL 2019: Average: 29.20 at a SR of 119.67

Winner: IPL number 6 - Kieron Pollard

IPL v PSL Number 7 Batsman: Krunal Pandya v Dwayne Bravo

Batting:

Krunal Pandya IPL 2019 - Average: 16.63 at a SR of 122.00
Dwayne Bravo PSL 2019 - Average: 11.50 at a SR of 79.31

Bowling:

Krunal Pandya IPL 2019 - Average: 27.91 at an Eco of 7.28
Dwayne Bravo PSL 2019 - Average: 28.42 at an Eco of 8.29

Winner in Batting and Bowling: Krunal Pandya

IPL v PSL Number 8 Batsman: Rahul Chahar v Muhammad Nawaz

Rahul Chahar IPL 2019 - Average: 6.00 at a SR of 109.09
Muhammad Nawaz PSL 2019 - Average: 24.50 at a SR of 108.88

Winner in Batting: Muhammad Nawaz

Bowling:

Rahul Chahar IPL 2019 - Average: 23.69 at an Eco of 6.55
Muhammad Nawaz PSL 2019 - Average: 26.92 at an Eco of 7.60

As Bowling is their speciality and given that they wouldn't have many opportunities to come to the crease anyway (since they both bat beneath number 7), I don't think too much weight should be given on their batting stats. Nawaz's figures with the bat aren't exactly ground breaking anyway.

Winner in Bowling and Overall Winner: Rahul Chahar

Specialist Bowlers

IPL v PSL 1st Bowler: Rahul Chahar v Muhammad Nawaz

Mitchell McClenaghan IPL 2019 - Average: 47.33 at an Eco of 7.88
Sohail Tanvir PSL 2019 - Average: 21.73 at an Eco of 6.93

I don't rate Tanvir at all but given the gulf in their bowling stats, it's only fair he gets the nod here.

Winner: Sohail Tanvir

IPL v PSL Round 2: Jasprit Bumrah v Muhammad Hasnain

Jasprit Bumrah IPL 2019 - Average: 21.52 at an Eco of 6.63 (Outstanding)
Muhammad Hasnain PSL 2019 - Average: 17.58 at an Eco of 7.53

Winner: Bumrah

IPL v PSL Round 3: Lasith Malinga v Fawad Ahmed

Not a fair comparison but due to the different make up of the two sides, there is always a chance of having to compare a pacer with a spinner.

Lasith Malinga IPL 2019 - Average: 27.37 at an Eco of 9.76
Fawad Ahmed PSL 2019 - Average: 27.09 at an Eco of 6.57

Winner: Fawad Ahmed

Not only does the the IPL side win in 8 of the 11 head-to-head comparisons, but they clearly more star players.

The fact that nearly every Mumbai player accomplished better figures compared to their Quetta counterparts in the world's premier T20 tournament shows how far ahead they really are. The gap between these two teams is actually greater than the gap between Pakistan and India.

Yes thats a valid point regarding BCCI and that is why I suggested even in the first page of the thread that if cricket champions league will ever be really inched again it should have proper planning, structure and marketing which to be successful. Playing 3-4 teams of IPL would simply be like making Indian fans watch again what they already do in IPL time so that would make it redundant once again.

Regarding overseas players overlapping, yes it can happen on occasions but replacements can be allowed.

Why are you only comparing players credentials for their respective leagues? In champions league they wont be facing the same oppositions.

Gap between Pak and India? The way you have compared these two sides it might turn out Pak is a better team in ODIs with Imam averaging more than Rohit, Fakhar averaging more than Dhawan, Babar averaging more than Kohli and Haris averaging more than other Indian middle order. While Shaheen averages better than every Indian bowler in ODIs.

Lol! But we all know India is a better team at the moment so firstly going for stats and going specifically for the respective league when champions league opposition is going to be different is wrong in my opinion.

Well the only other way I could compare them was using their international or combined domestic + international stats but for Pakistan's players, the numbers are inflated after having padded up their stats against second string and minnow opposition. This also explains why some of our ODI players have better stats than their Indian counterparts. Imam in particular has had his fair share of minnow bashing. Also, Babar does not average higher than Kohli in ODIs.

Secondly, it was to illustrate how far ahead Mumbai Indians are off Quetta Gladiators in T20 cricket. If one team has better numbers in the premier T20 league in the world, then they are undoubtedly superior because they have achieved more in a league which holds a much higher calibre of players. Lets say for example, a striker in the Premier League finishes the season with 30 goals and there is a striker in the Dutch league who also finishes his season with 30 goals. Let me ask you, who has achieved more in the eyes of the footballing world?

I understand your point. I havent said that IPL winner is worse than PSL winner but definitely had to point out that difference isnt as much as some are trying to portray. Saying MI will win 10/10 times like hyperion said is just biased view especially when one considers how Lahore Lions it its day was able to beat them. 10/10 times, vastly superior etc are emotions and nothing else.

Anyways good discussion but its all an imaginary scenario and we have already stretched imagination quite a bot.

Please don't mention my user name while describing your own imaginations or make-believe scenarios. Yes Lahore Lions defeated MI in one match which was a fluke just like your CT final win. How many matches have we faced Pak after that and how many times have you won? Point is upsets happen but you don't create your arguments based on them.

It’s not possible to have a direct comparison because of pitch conditions ground sizes and other things.

IPL although I’m not sure will most likely have more high scoring matches where batsmen will have higher averages and strike rates.

It would be interesting to name the great bowlers in this premier league on flat pitches bowlers like Steyn Malinga etc get hit around regularly.

Imagination? You said MI will win 10/10 times.

Upset was done by a local domestic team with no overseas players and if that can do an upset against a team with 4 overseas players surely when the other team will have 4 overseas players on their side they can definitely compete.

De Villiers had a better average in the IPL than the PSL this tells you the difference isn’t big as some might think in a weaker league wasn’t as good whereas he should be a lot better.
